Age of Empires themed charity fundraiser ~

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:26 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

This August from the 1st to the 22nd I am again fundraising for the Starlight Children's Foundation Australia! Last year the AoE Community came together and raised a whopping A$20,202!!! This is an incredible amount and is still something I'm trying to process...

It's with much excitement that I'll be streaming across different time-zones and hosting a variety of events to drive donations towards this extremely worthy cause. I won't overload this post with too much info, but the basic plan is:

    - 14 streams planned including rigged showmatches with Nili, Vinch, Hera among others, AoE2 bingo, co-op campaigns, live music, William Wallace ultra-hardcore and more!

    - over 14 giveaways, at least one each day, including Dawn of the Dukes, official AoE merchandise, T90 casting, Age of Empires IV, and the major prize of a SecretLab chair!! (min donation required to enter)

    - a A$5,000 goal with eight milestone rewards planned along the way, including releasing a new AoE Parody Song and creating a Bulgarian Konnik cosplay!

For further details about what is planned for my fundraiser, titled "Reach for the Stars", please head to the aoezone link below, jump into my Discord for any updates, and tune in on Twitch to catch all the action live!

Last year we really achieved something very special, and I'm so keen to make some more memories and brighten the lives of more children in hospitals across Australia.

Got 3 sheep stolen and tower rushed but pulled out the win. Probably my proudest moment.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 05:34 PM PDT

I'm around a 900 ELO player and I am absolutely horrible at finding my sheep. It's 100% the most stressful part of my game. Well the opponent found his right away sent his scout to find mine and took them then tower rushed me. It was sloppy but I pulled out a win by pushing deer and my boars to a mill across from the tower microd my villagers away from his men at arms and instead of defending went after his eco so he couldn't age up. I eventually castle aged then dropped a castle that cleared up the towers then a second TC and it was all over from there. Opponent spent so many resources on men at arms and towers thinking he definitely had the win, especially at this ELO but I was able to stay calm and pull it through. Probably my proudest game.

Question about which game is the correct game.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:27 AM PDT

Hello, I have been watching AoE2 videos and have decided I can't hold out any longer and want to purchase the game. However, which is the correct one for on Steam? Is the one most people play the Definitive Edition, or the 2013 version? Thank-you guys and sorry for the dumb question, I looked for an FAQ before posting to no avail!

I want to be playing diplos on Age of Empires 2013 Steam version.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:34 PM PDT

So I left this game a couple years ago due to extreme toxcicity in my corner of the multiplayer base. However, when I was active I loved diplo games. Not west europe diplo or barbarians vs romans. Much more structured and unique scenarios, that had their own stories, worlds and civilizations. They were often fantasy themed, and in particular included games like Southern Sands, The Darkness, Mutant World, Age of Ice, Necromancer Wars, Wizards and Demons, Ardar, Calradia, Vuphonia, The Coming Winter, The Dark Portal, and quite a few more. These were games that often had one or more big overarching villains, players tasked with containing these villains, and a complex web of alliances that players had to balance to avoid anyone growing too powerful. Players had quests, advantages, weaknesses, lots of unique units, leaders and heroes, and special abilities. It was a set of scenarios that had epic last stands, heroic charges, hurried reinforcements, shifting alliances, defense pacts and promises, flat out lies in chat to gain advantage, power bartering, alliances that stayed together to the bitter end, monsters sweeping across the world, last minute changes, epic strategy with grand armies and huge fortress cities.

That period in my life has some of my fondest gaming moments ever, and while the toxicity and feuding between two of the creators of these maps eventually drove the community apart, including myself, I would love to try to rebuild this community. Nowadays the only special scenarios that ever seem to be played are variations of cba, and I wish more people were exposed to one of my favorite snapshots of gaming history. Here is where it gets difficult. Almost none of these scenarios remain in the workshop. I have no desire to petition the creators to repost them, especially because they had often bizarre and arrogant policies about only allowing certain people to experience them. However, on my old computer, I still possess most of these maps. As I understand it is possible to move editor maps to another computer, and if I took the time to bring them to this one, I could theoretically redistribute these maps, either in lobbies or via the workshop. What I want to know is should I bother?

I have one or two other friends to join me, but these scenarios nearly always asked for 8 players, and due to the toxicity previously mentioned that was hard to manage. Id love to help more people experience one of my favorite game modes ever, and Im willing to put in the work to bring these maps back to the public, perhaps even build some of my own, organise discord servers for people to coordinate games, set up events so people have an easier time finding them and we dont spend hours waiting for people to give it a try, but Id like to know if its worth it.

Basically, if any of my pitch sounded appealing, please comment that youd be interested, and Ill try to coordinate with people over the next couple weeks. If anyone has any advice for transporting editor maps between computers, please share it since I am technically mediocre at best. And of course, feel free to share any other thoughts, especially if you have any memories of this amazing period.

Thank you very much if you read to this point, and I really hope enough people in this amazing community think its a good idea to try to restart a really special moment in gaming, so that this amazing fanbase gets another go at experiencing it.

TL:DR Fantasy Diplo Games were IMO one of the coolest things this or any other gaming community had. I miss them. I have them. Most people cannot access them. Please tell me if you are interested in helping me bring them back.

A few days playing this game but need a good step to step tutorial...

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT

Right now I managed to start with decent resources. My problem is usually about army. Usually I got problem creating the army. Seems like it takes too much for me to create a army.

Also not 100% sure what army is better to create.

Any tutorial good for this? I've searched a few at google but they didn't help.

What army to focus (I mostly play Huns/Vikings), number of troops and number of villagers, how create army fast without zeroing your resources. Those stuff!

    Tatar strategy

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:55 AM PDT

    Hello,

What's the current strategy with the Tatars? Are they good? Do you use the height bonus? I find it difficult.

I've never heard of some of the maps in the current rotation, what's the deal with them?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 04:25 AM PDT

That market one, I assume you don't start trading with that until lategame like you would anyway? Unless your own market is denied. Maybe Spanish more viable for a change? Italians? Not much use until lategame mind. The crater one looks like it might be quite small so you kind of use Socotra strats - lots of aggression, maybe pre-Mill drush?

I'm quite inexperienced in a lot of ways so new maps can throw me a bit if there's a very obvious meta that I'm not aware of (I got whipped on Atacama because I completely lost control of the wooded area and then realised I didn't have any left and it turns out Indians destroy everything on African Clearing).

I am more familiar with Hideout but not actually what the meta is, I assume trushing is pretty strong, maybe Donjon rushing these days as well?

Valley I sort of know as well, I guess the meta there is Mongols or Mongols, and if you get bored then there's always Mongols. Or, joking aside, I guess good farming/berry/herdable civs if you don't want to risk going for the hunt?

I don't necessarily need to follow the meta but it's nice to know what it is so I know what to predict from other players.

    Cheers!

Dev request: ease up on the censoring?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 01:18 PM PDT

I lost a 1v1, turk fast imp -> GG. We were chatting afterwords and I said "I hate turks 11" and it bleeped it out. I understand that censoring out hateful comments and curse words has the effect of preserving the positive, welcoming nature of this community, but this player demographic skews older (I would imagine most players are in their 20's and 30s). We can handle some cursing.

Many times totally innocent sentences are bleeped out, and because this censoring tool is so smart, no matter how I try to re-word what I was trying to say, it still bleeps it out.

    Thanks for your consideration.

    Any good hotkey tutorials?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:16 AM PDT

I don't use that many hotkeys, but the ones I do help a lot so I would really like to improve that part of my game. However, it feels somewhat overwhelming with everything one needs to remember. Can you recommend a tutorial or a general strategy for improving hotkey use? Perhaps just with the essentials. Thanks.

    Huasa civ like AoE3DE?

Like the portuguese were featured first in AoE III and later in The African Kingdoms in AoE2 HD, the Hausa kingdom can be a good third african civ for DE.

Reset queue settings on game restart?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 03:29 AM PDT

I've had it happen two times in the last week that I played team games with friends in the evening and then the next day wanted to play some 1v1, but accidently queued for team games with randomly matched players. When you join a new queue (alone) it keeps your old settings (for example, queueing for 2v2 the day before) and just adds 1v1. I don't find this very intuitive. Either it should disselect everything besides 1v1 or, maybe the better solution, it should just have nothing selected so that you have to make a choice before queuing and don't accidently queue for the wrong game.

Obviously this should only be reset on game restart because often you play multiple team games or 1v1s in a row, so resetting it every time after a game does not make sense. However I think, when you play the next day or even days after again you don't necessarily remember or check the settings and just queue - leading to people ending up in team games (or 1v1) they didn't want to play or people dodging to requeue.

List of all techs that impact creation speed of units/buildings

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 12:37 AM PDT

    hey, everyone.

Is there a good resource for finding all of the techs in this game that would impact the speed at which a unit is created?

I want to be able to compare them to conscription and the crossbow upgrade, which I think are the two best techs for improving creation speed.

    Remove capture age

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:40 AM PDT

Is there a way to remove the capture age integration in the game? I don't use that tool, just more unnecessary buttons in the menu, i even ask me why they added it in the game, if so they should minimum include it completely as full version, but not just linking to the site where you need download it manually.
