    Sad news - TheViper

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:28 PM PDT

Hi all! Well, what we were fearing has become true and Viper has been forced to withraw from a couple of tournaments due to wrist issues. Since he announced this health problems we hoped he could withstand the pain until he could be treated, but unfortunately it seems to be too painful for him to play for a long time.

Now health comes first. I wish TheViper the best of the recoveries and we hope he can return to competitive play. I also want to thank him for all he has done (and is still doing for AoE2 community) and the level and hours of entertainment he has brought to us.

u/Guanfranco, if you can give him all our force and cheers from Reddit community in today's interview, we will be thankful.

    Have a nice week

    Hera's 12h Luigi Cosplay Stream + Subathon

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:07 AM PDT

Hello everyone its Hera here, and I'm pleased to announce a MEGA stream happening Monday July 12th at 13gmt. I will start with the promised 12 hour luigi cosplay stream BUT I made you all wait far too long to simply show up with that. So I've decided to up the anti and will turn a measly 12 hours into an entire Subathon stream!

This is how it works: Viewers can support the stream to add time to the clock and keep the stream going. The 12:00:00 (12 hours) Timer will start on Monday July 12th at 13gmt with the Luigi stream. From that point on, any support I receive will add to the time of the stream and keep me in my basement spewing out content for you guys to consume.

One may ask, but Hera don't you need to sleep? To this I will reply: Yes indeed, but I have prepared 15+ hours of never before seen offline content, featuring a mixture of So You Want To Play episodes, build order guides, tierlists, and much much more to play on stream while I sleep to keep the subathon rolling!

    Monday July 12th At 13gmt

    Luigi Costume Schedule:

13gmt-16gmt Showmatch/tournament match Info TBD (will edit post once the details are sorted)
    -----Break + Giveaway-----

16gmt-21gmt Ranked Games Getting To 2k6

    -----Break + Giveaway-----

    21gmt-23gmt Guess The Elo

    23gmt-01gmt Community Games

-----Break + Giveaway + Remove Luigi Costume----

    Enter Into Subathon Stream Segment

Since I dont know how long the stream will last, the schedule Will be 100% spontaneous and I will continue to stream as long as theres time left in the queue!

How To add time to the Subathon:

Every Prime = +2 mins to stream

Every Tier 1 = +2 mins to stream

Every Tier 2 = +5 mins to stream

Every Tier 3 = +10 mins to stream

Every 100 bits = +30 seconds to the stream

Gifted subs also apply in the same fashion

To spice things up I will also throw in a list of incentives along the way:

At 3000 Subs -> Show up to a random low rated lobby and just play with them

    At 3500 Subs -> Keyboard Cam & I play a ranked game

At 4000 Subs -> Play A Ranked Game with an Exercise Ball instead of a chair

and if you guys are still persistent and crazy enough to have come this far, ive one final incentive...

At 5000 subs -> I will shave my Head

I'm very excited (and a bit scared ngl) to take on the biggest project of my Age of Empires 2 & Streaming career to date.

Hope to see you all there July 12th Starting 13gmt only on https://www.twitch.tv/hera

Spirit Of The Law, please analyse this

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 01:55 AM PDT

So I've been thinking about a topic for quite some time: how much extra resources does every civilization's bonuses provide, and when?

For example, take the Britons on a Arabia 1v1. Faster gathering shepherds allows you to put 5 on sheep instead of 6, freeing up one villager for as long as you're eating sheep. Additionally, you save wood on TC's, which in most games you would drop 2 or 3 of. This would lead to x amount of extra resources in dark age, plus some savings in early castle (plus a bit more going into imp usually, if you drop a 4th TC then).

How would it look like if you'd calculate this for every civ? How would you handle the more difficult bonuses? I can't think of a theoretical approach for Aztec carrying bonus for example, I feel like that should be measured experimentally. Or how does the celt wood chopping evolve over time, as your number of woodchoppers changes? Or what about the Cuman early second tc?

Plus, what about the military bonuses? Berber cheaper stable units only saves you resources if you're making those units, but has a considerable impact in that case. You'd have to make certain assumptions about 'an average amount of knights a berber player makes in castle age from x stables', but how many would that be?

I'd love to see a well thought-out analysis of this, slapped on a game timeline.

    How to beat archers

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:51 PM PDT

I am struggling to beat archers with Mangonels (or really anything other than a lot of FU knights). I find that if I send a mango at archers if they are Britons they can normally kill it before I get in range, can split once effectively or if I have let's say 3 or 4 then they can see them and back off. It feels really difficult to use siege to defend archers since they can easily just back out. Am I doing something wrong?

Even Skirms feel difficult as once again the archers can just run away anytime I have an advantage and hit some other eco.

I am 1100ish ELO I play random and struggle vs archers with non cav civs (even archer civs vs Britons).

    how do you play arena

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:00 PM PDT

arena just doesn't seem fun. I figure I must be doing something wrong, because everyone and their mother picks arena for team games...

It just seems like turtle until you mass unique units, or the first person to imp just wins with trebs. What should I be doing in arena?

    Help me understand idle TC

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:58 PM PDT

    Hey everybody!

I used to play a lot as a kid in the late 90's and only very recently realized the game was still around.

I play ranked team RM with a colleague and so far we're having an absolute blast. None of us ever played online before. Finding time to play isn't easy but so far we're five games down with zero losses (not that it makes us any less nervous to play, lots of whisky is involved for the nerves…)

So far we've played with compositions such as cav civ + siege civ. We played ethiopians/persians vs goths/khmer and had a lovely time with 50 SOs against hordes of barely microed infantry and elephants. In the next game, we faced the same players who had now swapped to double siege civs (ethiopians/celts) so we went all in with ethiopian xbows and byzantine trash in castle and won again.

We're beginners, but we're feeling (in our bracket, mind) relatively comfortable with military tactics and gameplan.

However our eco and age-up feels a lot less consistent. I suppose a lot will come with practice, but the concept of never idling the TC I haven't fully wrapped my head around yet.

Do I always want my TCs to produce? I understand you want to snowball the investment (50 food in turn generates X>50 resources over time) but in situations like post imp when there is no more gold, for example, should I still spam vills to put on wood/stone for market trade? At what point do I decide 'no more vills!' and put the rest into military?

Thanks for your help and thanks to the aoe2 community on general for keeping the game living and all the enjoyable matches on youtube et cetera!

    Civ Idea: The Papacy

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:08 PM PDT

yet another "civ idea" post, just for fun and for the small amount of people that enjoy to read this kind of posts, I wanted to design a civ centered around a "Theocracy" since lately even duchies have been added, I can't add much historically as other have with their civs ideas, but I thought "The Papacy" could make for an interesting choice as a Theocracy responsible for the Crusades.

The Papacy: Monk and Infantry Civilization.

    Civ Bonuses:

    - Starts with a monastery.
-Starts with a free extra generated relic (garrisoned).
-Every 2 collected relics, grants a 10% discount on technologies and units (up to 30%).

    Unique Units:

    Crusader / Elite Crusader (60f/40g):
    All purpose heavy infantry.
    - 60 HP / 80 HP.
    - 2/2 armor / 4/4 armor.
    - 10 attack / 14 attack.
    - 20s build time.

    Knight Templar (80f / 80g):
    All purpose heavy cavalry.
    - 180 HP.
    - 2/3 armor.
    -14 attack.
    -1 range.
    - 30s build time.

    Unique Techs:

    -Monastic Orders (200f / 300g):
Monasteries work 50% faster and grants a 20% discount on monks.

    -Holy Orders (600f / 600g):
Allows you to create "Knight Templars" at stables.

    Team Bonus:
    - Monasteries support +5 population.

    Missing Technologies / Units:

    Barracks:
    -missing Supplies.

    Archery Ranges:
    -missing thumb ring.
    -missing parthian tactics.
    -missing elite cavalry archers.
    -missing Crossbow/Arbalest.

    Stables:
    -missing bloodlines
    -missing paladins
    -missing camels
    -missing elephants
    -missing steppe lancers

    Siege Workshop:
    -missing Siege Onagers.
    -missing Heavy Scorpions.

    Blacksmith:
    Full tech available

    University:
    -missing bombard towers
    -missing arrow slits
    -missing fortified walls.

    Castle:
    -missing conscription

    Eco Upgrades:
    -missing Gold shaft minning.

The idea behind this civ is to center it's game plan around relics, so Castle Age uptime will be most important to contest the relics and gain the economic boost it needs to compete, since it lacks many options for a powerful army, like bloodlines or archer play (since historically, the vatican banned crossbows), its main options for castle age aggresion will be the upper hand economically with weaker units, centered around infantry, monks and siege and for late game, the "Knight Templar" is there as a more powerful but expensive version of the paladin.

Any way to cheat campaign with achievement?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:34 PM PDT

First, I'm not that kind of lazy player, I do try to play every campaign, and at hard difficulty.

The problem is, steam cloud corrupt my campaign progression, I just lose so many stages campaign, and I simply don't have time and effort want to repeat those stages again.

The "achievement" part is not accurate, because steam achievement probably not lost, I can still see at least some of them(those I remember).

It's mainly the "golden tick" thing on campaign roadmap (at least this one is most obvious).

So any solution to this? The title is maybe the easiest way I can image, or if I can restore save, or edit campaign progress, something like that.

    Thanks

    Edit:

So, I managed to solve this problem "somehow", after doing tons of google.

The key is the function from win10, the file/folder auto backup, I can just revert the files corrupted by steam cloud to earlier version, though I still lose some progress, but it's now much more acceptable result.

I guess the key file is "Player.nfp", and it's not the one under "C:\Users\..." most google result told you, at least in my case, steam seems read files from steam userdata folder.

However, if there's any way to "properly" skip campaign (at least with like gold tick), I would still like to know.

What are the most popular / competitive maps in pro aoe2 currently?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:26 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am trying to learn more about professional age of empires as I want to start looking at hosting some small tournaments but I am still trying to learn more about the professional scene in the game. What are seen as the most competitive maps as well as the most popular for both players as well as spectators?

I know obviously arabia is a staple but are there any other major "Must have" maps in the pool?

    Thank you!
