I want to play multiplayer but I'm deathly afraid Posted: 30 Jul 2021 03:36 AM PDT I used to play Aoe2 long, long ago and it was one of my favorite games. I just got the DE edition and I love the new graphics and all the new civs and quality of life changes. I would also really love to play multiplayer BUT I'm really bad at the game. I can beat the moderate AI but the hard AI kicks my ass. So I thought I'd try to get better before playing online but then I watched a few T90 Low ELO legends videos and some of those guys were making massive mistakes that even I didn't make. So I thought hey, maybe I can play online. I queued up, got matched as Berbers against a Goths player and got my ass kicked in like 10 minutes. I had barely gotten to Feudal Age when swarm after swarm of man-at-arms began to overwhelm my base. My plan was to rush to Castle Age and get knights but couldn't even make it there. Needless to say, I resigned almost immediately. I checked my opponent's player profile and he was a beginner like me. And he kicked my ass effortlessly. Now it's like I have PTSD. I want to play online but I get anxious whenever I see the multiplayer menu. To make a long story short, as someone who can't beat the hard AI, should I just stop trying to play online? What skill level do I need to play online? I don't want to climb high on the leaderboards or anything, just have fun and play casually against others. But I also realize that if I'm an extreme noob and everyone else is at least competent, it's not going to be very fun for me. I guess my question is, when exactly should I start playing online? EDIT: Thanks for all the encouragement guys! I did not realize that it takes a few games to figure out your ELO. I'm going to give it another shot and hopefully won't get stomped this time around. Thanks for being such a great supportive community! [link] [comments]

TIL: Theodoric the Goth who fought against Atilla was the son of Alaric who wrecked Rome Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:46 PM PDT One of the things I love about the campaigns and history in general is that the more you learn, the more you can make connections. In the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (Atilla 5) you fight against the Romans with some barbaric allies. The cutscene informs you that an enemy king is killed there, Theodoric the Goth. Well apparently this guy who helps save Rome's ass in this battle is the son of Alaric. The guy who has an entire campaign dedicated to him kicking some Roman ass. In the intervening years, the Goths had made a deal with the Romans: kick some barbarian ass in exchange for land to settle in (Aquitania, in what is now southwest France). Thought that was a cool tidbit. [link] [comments]
What’s the biggest mistake you have ever made in AOE2 that you recovered from? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:34 AM PDT I made double mills at the start instead of two houses and ended up winning that game [link] [comments]

Tutorial: How to move your your screen when the game is paused Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:38 AM PDT Step 1: Join ranked queue Step 2: Have opponent pause the game Step 3: Press the delete hotkey (ie Backspace by default) Step 4: Your screen has moved! One downside of this is that your unit is now deleted [link] [comments]
How do you deal with Castle age Franks with a crossbow civ? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:12 AM PDT 1500+ player here. This is something that always happens to me when playing as an archer civ vs a cavalry civ - Franks are not the only one, but they're the most common, and the smoothest to play. What always ends up happening is that after an even-ish feudal age we get to castle at at most the same time, because you can't really match the food economy of Franks going scouts+walls. And when we reach castle age, I never have enough crossbows to comfortably move out into the map, since the meta nowadays is to go only one range at first - if I do two ranges, my castle time will be delayed even more. And crossbows caught out in the open can be very easily killed by knights unless you have a good mass. So what happens is that I have to do monks and ballistics to feel like I have a chance, while Franks are massing knights and booming at the same time. And by the time I feel like I can try to engage, they already have a forward siege plus 20+ knights, and it's all downhill from there. So what can I do? I can try to be very aggressive in feudal in the hopes of delaying castle age for both of us so that I can have more numbers, but there's no guarantee of getting through walls, and the other player can always do skirms. I can go extreme stone wall defense and 1 TC fast imp, but that seems risky at best. And if I just sit back and boom, I will die to the knights+siege. What are my options? [link] [comments]

Why are these civs missing Blast Furnace? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:22 AM PDT Why do the Vietnamese, Koreans, Malians, and Byzantines lack Blast Furnace? How does that balance the civs? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:00 AM PDT I ask because I kinda want to preorder AoE4 and get DotD for free; but I'm still holding out for the announcement of a physical boxed release for AoE4. But if there isn't going to be one, I may as well preorder it on Steam :/ [link] [comments]
Is AoE2 DE's scenario editor not yet really up to snuff? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:24 AM PDT I recently decided to play around a bit with the editor, and I stumbled over a couple of things that seem to make it clear, that it was certainly not the focus of DE's QA team. -Apparently the Cinematics tab is completely useless, as it is currently not possible to play any cinematics before or after a scenario. The selections you make here are simply ignored by the game. If you're making a custom campaign it is also not possible to display the scenario instructions on a so called 'card' beforehand like in the actual campaigns. The corresponding dropdown menu is completely empty! And I know for a fact you could easily choose any existing campaign backdrops for your own campaign scenario in the original game. -Slightly related to that: the "map" for custom campaigns where you select your scenarios is completely white and empty. It seems like both this, and the flags representing the individual scenarios were at some point supposed to be customizable as well, but apparently that's not the case yet. -Another thing that jumped out to me is how stupidly complicated it is to paly a sound. There is no dropdown menu, or any other kind of UI solution to pick out the sound you want. You have to manually type the sound event's name into the box. I don't know how one is supposed to figure out these names. Right now the only option seems to be a google spreadsheet that some kind soul provides in this Steam guide for the editor. I know it was probably like this in the originnal game as well, but there you could simply use the name of the individual sound file in the game forders. This is not possible now in DE, because the sound is stored differently. This just seems like a huge oversight, to not simplify the sound selection process. -The third and final eyebrow raiser for me personally was the horrible german translation of the editor's interface, to the point where I had to google some options to figure out what they mean. I won't bore you with specific examples but it's the typical, technically correct 1:1 translation that makes absolutely no sense in the context. Reeks of Google translate, which is weird, because I haven't encountered such blunders in the rest of the game. I wouldn't be surprised, if other languages are facing the same problem in the editor. But even knowing the original english wording doesn't really help sometimes, so it's up to trial and error, to figure out what does what. Tooltips would help a lot here. Right now it seems to me like the Editor in AoE2 DE was pretty much an afterthought. I don't really know how much they expanded its features compared to HD or even the original game, but there seems to be so much quality of life potential for DE that was just ignored and seems to be still missing today. The most recent list of bugs and other problems I could find was this post on AoK Heaven from december 2020. Since I could barely find any information about this topic I wanted to ask you guys: Did you have similar expierences with the editor? Is the lackluster state of the editor generally known? Does anyone know if there are still improvements to be expected? [link] [comments]
How to get past the 13XX ELO mark? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:17 AM PDT Been bouncing in this range forever now, win one, lose one, win one, lose one. I don't wanna be the best I would just like to reach my goal of 1400. Anyone know what key elements 13XX players lack? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:05 AM PDT Hey guys so i've tried to put unique units such as elite tarkan etc in a feitoria to train there, to represent mercenaries you can hire as the byzantines. It works but as soon as I want to train them, it takes forever to produce just 1 unit. Does anyone know how this could be because i'm clueless. When i was modding in AGE, I copied the unit I wanted (f.e elite tarkan) and made a second elite tarkan unit but with the feitoria location and only gold cost (this was only for byzantines and gaia). I then went to effects and clicked on 'byzantine tech tree' where i then enabled all the recently added units with the feitoria location. This got me to see and produce the units in my game but as I said, the amount of time it takes to produce 1 unit is very very long. It would be awesome if someone could point out what I did wrong or what I should add to make this work. [link] [comments]

Need help with the scenario editor Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:50 AM PDT Hello guys, I am currently creating some maps on the scenario editor and would need some help with triggers specifically. If you know someone that is good at triggers or maybe there is a discord group for this let me know. The problem I am currently facing is making an infinite loop for fish, as when it's depleted the trigger should replace it instantly. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jul 2021 04:30 PM PDT Is there a way to play with the AoK ruleset only on the definitive edition? I think it would be fun to see how the game has evoked over the years with the benefit of modern graphics. [link] [comments] |
