    Steppe Lancer Appreciation Thread

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:08 AM PDT

I played a game with Cumans tonight to try out their cheaper stables. It was on Runestones vs Bulgarians. My opponent committed to heavy feudal infantry aggression, which was effective and made most of my vils flee to a spot near his base and setup shop. I was able to use the market to get to castle quicker than him, and amass a group of ~10 Lancers to quickly get into his main base and clean up villagers. That +1 range is really nice and they made short work of them.

Liking what I saw i amassed more, and even against his panic pikes they did fantastic. All I needed was some seige to take down his towers / krepost and that was gg.

Even after that, in a game against Indians vs camels and archers (with seige) they did great as well.

I know they aren't anywhere near where they may have been at launch, but they are totally a viable unit. Before anyone says "well pros don't play them in ranked", Viper did very recently with just as much success. There's always a time and a place, but I was pleasantly surprised by them. Definitely worth a second look.

    The Path this villager took

In your opinion, what is the most underrated civilization?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 06:55 AM PDT

    I'll start:

I think Vietnamese are a solid archer civ that doesn't quite fit into the meta strategy of archer civs, so they end up with a lower winrate and lower popularity. It's true they have flaws that need to be overcome, but I also feel like they're better than thought and that much of those flaws come from Vietnamese not quite fitting in with standard archer strats.

The thing is, the Vietnamese wood savings enables you to get all the early eco bonuses without disturbing your archer production/farm production rate at all. Since we tend to only get Horse Collar and Double-Bit Axe for Feudal, this is a modest bonus that helps your eco moreso than your actual archers. The health bonus is very humble in Feudal and does little to make a difference, admittedly. (tanks one additional shot from enemy archers for example, but this matters little when overkill is common due to micro'ing entire archer squads to attack one unit)

I think their real power spike is actually castle age, where they can still support their boom easily thanks to the lack of wood costs on eco upgrades. Their eco bonus is often superior to the wood savings Britons enjoy, just doesn't necessarily feel like it since Heavy Plow + Bow Saw is 225 wood saved once castle is hit whilst Britons save 275 wood on two TCs, but this doesn't count savings made already in Feudal or the greater potential to grab Gold mining early. What the savings on wood via eco upgrades instead of TCs does set you up for is an aggressive castle age backed by only 1-2 TCs, though.

What I like about Vietnamese is that they set you up to mass archers, then they have Battle Elephants available. The typical counter to Battle Elephants is Monks, but Monks don't do so hot against archers, so Vietnam in particular has a really solid mix of elephants - usually ignored due to their heavy weakness to monks - combined with a unit that can prevent that major weakness. I actually think Vietnamese played solely for archers is, understandably, a very underwhelming experience when you consider the advantages that civs like Ethiopians and Britons provide. What Vietnamese offer though, imo, is a better combined composition that works well together, though it is trickier to pull off. Where other civs would likely go into Mangonel micro wars, Vietnamese can likewise just actively tank shots with elephants that exhibit pressure on buildings, enemy mangonels and more. Even if the elephants are dying, they tank enough damage for Vietnamese to pull ahead on archer numbers in archer mirror fights. Battle elephants have the added benefit of killing buildings faster than Mangonels, being producable immediately upon hitting castle instead of needing a new building, and a smaller gold cost. The building damage in particular is nice since attacking buildings is usually the major weakness for archer raids.

I understand why this still has a flaw with speed though, and I think that's part of why Vietnamese underperform: I think their most potent gameplan relies on breaking the mold and going for an archer-cav mix, and likewise securing forward presence - but not necessarily forward aggression - in Feudal. Their Feudal is fine, but doesn't exploit their bonuses as well as an early castle push. You want to grab a forward position to push hard with in Castle Age and reduce the walking time for your T H I C C horses.

Finally, by the time they have a Castle, they're immediately far more threatening vs. archer civs, and their imp unit composition is actually one of the most flexible, only lacking Blast Furnace, Hussar (not as big of a deal as people think; it's basically 15 less HP, but when using a civ that can support it's Light Cav with good ranged damage, it's not as big a loss), the second siege upgrade for all respective siege weapons (they get BBC though) and Paladin.

Basically, it's a civ with the right bonuses to set you up with a healthy eco and a healthy archer mass by the time you hit Castle, and by then it only requires you to capitalize on their advantages via aggression. Once their desired army is created, it's an army that takes forever for the opponent to weed out, allowing you to create some serious idle time within the opponent's eco.

I think the points against them have more to do with demanding players break the mold of pure archer spam, or difficulty with getting just the right amount of aggression going around Feudal so that you can create forward stables for a solid push. It's admittedly a trickier civ to excel with than Britons going "HURRDURR RANGE" for that reason, but it's likewise a civ that I'm often surprised to see rated as low as they are.

Also they got really sweet hats.

How to end the game in Castle Age?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 04:26 AM PDT

Tired of games always ending in feudal from a rush or having to go to imp and whoever goes up first wins from trebs.

    Games like AOE2

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 06:49 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I love AOE2,it's my favourite game. However I only like campaigns and I have played them all and many custom scenarios. Does anyone know any game that is similar and has a good campaign? (Except Iron Harvest,AOE3,AOE 1 or AOM and COH,Command and Conquer or Starcraft-I've played all those and finished the campaigns) Thanks so much!

Scouts vs Archers in feudal age

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 02:36 AM PDT

1 FU feudal scout obviously beats 1 FU feudal archer.

I suspect 50 FU feudal archers beat 50 FU feudal scouts.

What is the minimum number of archers to defeat the same number of scouts? What is the minimum number of archers to defeat 7/8 times as many scouts (equal resources)?

I've seen some older/deleted posts which didn't seem conclusive. Is there a decent AI that works well in forest nothing? I saw something about promi, is this post DE or is it HD times? Thanks a lot.

Does everyone suddenly only scout rush in feudal?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 07:30 AM PDT

What is the easiest counter to a scout flush?

It's getting boring that every game in ranked goes the exact same way, fast feudal into scout rush. Lower elo don't do it so i'll win 5 or so games in a row then lose 5 or so games in a row. It's getting really boring seeing the same tactic every game.

How do I raise map awareness?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 04:00 AM PDT

Im getting into the ELO range where people start using some light cav or knights to raid my eco and I'm losing a lot of games because I just don't notice it. In my last game for example I had a TC outside of my main base with 30 vils getting food, wood and gold. My opponent sent 6 knights there and when I noticed it I already lost almost all my vils. I lost 30 vils to 6 knights! I don't know why, but during a game I just can't make myself to check the minimap regularly. I know I should do it but I don't remember doing it in a game. I focus on one spot and forget everything else. In another game I thought everything's going fine for me. I had lots of army in my opponents base, I killed a lot of his army, I thought I won and then I notice he killed pretty much all of my vils and two TCs. I lost pretty much my complete base without even noticing!

Do you guys have any tips how to get rid of that tunnel vision?

Did the update break Extreme AI?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 03:00 AM PDT

I used to struggle to beat Hardest, now I'm crushing Extreme with relative ease. I don't think I've become that much better.

I notice it does a lot of stupid things now like chase my scout raiders with its whole army, and if it does not keep its army in base, it rushes me only to focus on my buildings lol. I've won many games that I would have lost if it simply tasked its archers on my villagers instead of my mill. It also streams in villagers onto woodlines I'm using and covered with my TCs.

Lost my progress going Microsoft Store to Steam

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 06:16 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I played AOE II on Microsoft store for a month with the Xbox Pass for PC $1 deal and I enjoyed the game. I moved over to steam to get the game permanently but my progress is lost even though I connected my Xbox Live profile (which I played AOE II on, on MS Store).

Is there any way to bring my progress over? Or is it just lost?
