TC war - my opponent can see my repairing villagers, but I can't see theirs. Why?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 03:10 AM PDT

I just played a game of team game African Clearing, and as often happens, my town center happened to be directly next to the town center of one of my opponents. In the TC war though, the line of sight of my opponent's town center allowed them to see my repairing villagers and target them, while the line of sight of my TC didn't allow me to see the repairing villagers of my opponents. This caused me to lose the game. A comparison picture is at https://imgur.com/a/ZlYscUi - top is my opponent's line of sight, bottom is mine.

Does anyone know why? Especially considering that the positions of the repairing villagers are symmetrical, I can't figure out why my opponent has line of sight on my villagers I but I don't have line of sight on theirs. The only guess I have is that it has something to do with the line of sight radius not being calculated with the middle of the building as its origin? My opponents allied civs were Indians, Poles and Japanese. We were both Berbers.

There are no outposts or other building off screen that would give my opponent additional line of sight to the position of my repairing villager.

What is your favorite campaign and why?

Personally I found Jadwiga's to be the one I'm hooked about. The story, maps and the art are all very good.

    Acropolis is an awesome map

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:43 PM PDT

This map is great. I am so bad at it (it has recently come to my attention that I basically got to 1600 by playing maps that allowed me to avoid playing feudal age, be it old arabia or arena, or hideout etc) but I am learning a lot about feudal age because of it (and have lost over 200 elo as a result of playing only open maps recently).

I love the fact that unlike new socotra it isn't just MaA + tower because all your resources are forward. The hill means that you can't just MaA trush them due to villagers being able to fight, and even if you do tower their berries if they get map control they can take the small patch of deer in the middle to catch up. I think this is how open maps should be, you can wall and turtle a little bit if you want, but you still have to expand because taking the safe resources is inefficient.

What do you guys think about it?

Are Longswords a bad counter unit?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 07:33 AM PDT

I feel like even though Longswords are supposed to counter Eagles, they kinda don't. Eagle warriors move a lot faster and only cost 20 food, which is great in Castle Age. Teching into MAA and LS costs 300f and 105g, whereas the EW upgrade costs 200f 200g.

The militia line is so food heavy that it seems to me you are suffering a set back just by trying to counter eagle play. If you are playing pikes vs knights that tech investment is not as taxing and pikes perform siginificantly better against cavalry than LS against eagles.

It also seems that pikes deny an area while LS don't provide that threat because they are a lot slower than eagles but don't have the super high bonus damage. Do they need a change?

    Am I missing something?

    Saracen appreciation post

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Saracens do need seem to be picked often from pro players. I guess due to missing obvious eco or army bonuses. Therefore they also seem to be picked less at lower ELOs.

But I started playing with them at mid ELO level (1100ish) and I love them!! They are so much fun to play and imo a totally underrated civ!

I play them right now opening maa into archers. Since I am new to this bo, I am challenged getting my eco set up right in Feudal. But fortunately, they have this amazing market bonus! I am still able to keep up with the opponents Castle times without a perfectly clean build order. And you don't have to worry about selling your stone in Feudal. You just by it back for your TCs in Castle. It is freaking amazing.

And at this ELO many players still struggle fighting off your maa. If I am not running my maa into their TC I feel like having a huge advantage.

In Castle Age I go to architect ranges and one stable Camels against knights. The Archer Camel combo just wrecks any knights play. So much fun to melt away their numbers. If they go Mangos you can just add redemption monks. If they go skirmish knights, you focus more on your Camels and counter both units. Especially with the assignable hp on your Camels (civ bonus).

And again with the market you can get up to imp very easy very quick.

They also have bombard cannons. And the rest of the siege workshop is also amazing (siege rams and siege onager with siege engineer).

And they have a full black smith.

They have all important options in Castle Age and an amazingly wide tech tree.

Sure, there UU is very situational. But who cares. I need the Castles to build trebs anyways.

I think many players shy away from them because they don't have an awesome army bonus e.g. for their archers like britons or Ethiopians. Or no (obvious) eco bonus. But man, I have so much fun playing them. And they are so hard to counter since they have an answer to everything.

So much for my opinion. What do you think of the Saracens? And what is a in your opinion underrated civ that is fun to play?
