Double hidden fix for Alf-F4 is been out for some time now!

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 12:49 PM PDT

The first part was included in the last major patch. They changed Arabia to make it less appealing for the general public, making people less likely to pick it, with some banning it altogether. This results in a more diverse and balanced map pool, and over time, people will get used to not getting their favorite map every time. No more no Arabia = Alt-F4. 200 IQ move by the devs.

And the second was rolled out just a couple of days ago. They downscaled the servers capacity so now it's harder to play a ranked game. Since you have been waiting for 10 minutes, after 5 failed attempts and 2 restarts you'll think twice about Alt-F4ing when you find a game!

I'm telling you guys, the devs are 4 parallel universes ahead of us.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Leave a fun comment or you will have to fight a flemish revolution in your next game!

[Suggestion] Berbers' Identity - The Genitour

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 01:46 AM PDT

As a result of a poor civ design despite being so unique and fun to use- we barely see any Genitour being made. Camel Archers and Elite Skirmishers just do it better each in their own way.

Genitour is naturally difficult unit to balance due to the fact all allies get to have this unit and the possibility of an abuse here is major. Therefore the approach should come from a different angle, buffing this unit exclusively for the Berbers while also eliminating the alternative.

Berbers lose access to Elite Skirmisher Tech.

Berbers now have also 15%/20% discount over Genitour as well as their Stable Units.

Genitour training time from 25 to 22 seconds (Skirmisher takes 22 seconds)

This will increase diversity and might turn Berbers into a more than just one trick pony (no pun intended) Cavalry civ. (That also has a doomsday Mangudai-like play)

    Stats wise:

    Skirmisher 25f 35w

    Genitour 50f 35w

    Berberian Genitour 42f 30w / 40f 28w

Would love to know your thoughts about this change. Thank you for reading!

Arabia, for the first time ever, doesn't contain any wolves

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 01:56 PM PDT

Arabia, for the first time ever, doesn't contain any wolves

In DE, for the first time in aoe2's history, wolves (and their different skinned varieties) have completely been removed from this map.

While this seems insignificant for the average player, it is worth noting that ever since DE, Arabia has become more and more wolf-less. As a quick analysis shows in the Wiki

An update released on 29th April 2020 decreased the number of wolves - this is the first and last time the amount of wolves has been changed being documented in the Patch Notes.

Update 36906 decreased the number of wolves significantly - presumably from 4 per player to 1 (Comparing HD Ara and current Arena)

Update 36906 decreased the number of wolves significantly - presumably from 4 per player to 1 (Comparing HD Ara and current Arena)

Lets look at one of each map version:

AoC, WK, DE Atacama - from left to right

I added the old Mapscripts to DE so they have higher quality

Note: Current Arabia is not included, as it has 0 wolves - also i couldnt get my hand on the first DE arabia, or the penultimate DE Arabia so i took Atacama instead

While the original AoC and the HD/WK spawn 4 wolves per player, the first "classic" DE maps (Attacama, Arena, Acropolis) currently only spawn 1 per player

    Why were they removed?

Well first of all it is noticeable that Cysion dislikes wolves

An old Aoezone Post back when Forgotten Empires was just at the beginning

I also recall that he once stated in an interview* that he included the Magyars Insta Wolf kill bonus because he disliked wolves a lot

    * (I think it was in this Talk of the Empire - But i don't have time currently to watch 2 hours - if you find the timestamp pls let me know in the comments)

Logically Cysion might have had a saying in this regard, but that is up for speculation and I don't want to make accusation.

    So.... what does this mean?

Well first of all I might drop the ball by saying that this completely influenced the meta and might be the cause of having to change Arabia in the first place.

    How?

Well, the absence of wolves generally strengthens a pre-mill drush or a drush in general, due to the militia having a 100% chance of arriving there full health. Furthermore, after this update, I have been told that the meta was indeed being driven by pre-mill drush and drush, but since i rarely watch Tournaments, someone in the comments might elaborate further (I think it was also the time when Celts "Hoanging" became a thing). Also I have noticed that drushes are now sent out more loosely (instead of the usual group of 3), with often single militia guarded by Scout being sent to the enemy.

So in response the Devs released an Arabia, which went down in history as "Green Arabia", which was very easily wallable (I couldn't find this change being mentioned in the wiki anywhere) - what followed were nerfs to Palisades, their pre-built melee and pierce armor, and an increase in build time.

    Timeline:

Soon Arabia was changed again to have fewer forests again

    Update 40874 - 22th September 2020

    Update 42848 - Anniversary patch on 22th November 2020

But the community seemed still unsatisfied with how closed Arabia was and how easy it could have been walled

    Current patch Update 51737 - 10th August 2021

As we have seen already on this reddit this version certainly does not always generate 3 starting forrest - but more importantly, it has 0 wolves (which wasn't mentioned in the patch notes)

My theory is that the decrease in wolves made drush meta, which in return caused a more closed arabia and then going in the complete opposite direction to keep this map's identity. Personally, I don't know what was wrong with the original HD/AoC Mapscript and why they didn't keep it, but I digress.

    Who cares?

To be honest, Wolves are not useless, let's talk about how they affect the game in more detail:

    Wolves makes Walling riskier

Wolves slightly nerfs booming (= Expanding), Outpost Scouting, Forward Hussar Spam

Wolves give one of Magyars Civ bonus a purpose

Wolves nerfs drushes, forwards and Maa (+ Towers)

Wolves also most noticeably delay villager laming (Walling in Resources, killing boar/deer)

Wolves force Loom on Black Forest (when Pocket walling)

Wolves rewarded better player that able to quick wall their villagers in time or who could construction site them away

Wolves fill up empty dead spots on the map and make up for great aesthetics

Wolves reward intensive scouting (by being able to mark by palisades and avoid them)

Back in AoC wolf corpses would be visible in Fog of War, helping you finding Villager Sneaks on BF, again rewarding map awareness, but this was removed in DE (because frankly it was possible to remove the corpse anyway with foundations)

    Conclusion:

I think the first DE Arabia map had fewer wolves already, which I assume was also one of the reasons they nerfed Towers from 1020 HP to 700 to begin with. If you have the oldest available DE Arabia Map saved somewhere, please share it with us. This is just the tip of the iceberg and there could be a lot said, but unfortunately I don't have the old Arabia scripts and I haven't joined DE since the beginning.

All in all, wolves did contribute quite a lot to general balance, the balance of certain rushes or turte strategies, they were also made into unforgettable content and essentially were part of the characteristics of this map.

While I know wolves are disliked, they should be readded by 3 per player, (which would still be less than the AoC map) to improve the balance of the game.

    P.S

I have uploaded all 3 map scripts for anyone to try and generate the older versions of Arabia (of AoC and HD, and current DE) for all that don't have those game versions.

Simply paste the .rms files into

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE\resources\_common\random-map-scripts

Reload Scenario Editor -> Map -> Random Map -> Select the Arabia Version you want with Size and hit "Generate"

Jack of all trades and One Trick Pony civs in numbers

Jack of all trades and One Trick Pony civs in numbers

Hi all! When we talk about "Jack of all trades" civs, we are often referring to versatile civs, with many late game army or counter-army compositions that make those civs a bit more unpredictable to defend against and more difficult to attack. This concept is the total opposite of "One Trick Pony" civs, which are strongly oriented towards mainly one army composition, which is usually very strong (OP!). While Jack of all trades civs give us more options, One Trick Ponies are more predictable. The biggest drawback for Jack of all trades civs comes when decision making, because a bad army comp can ruin us the game.

In order to quantify which civs are Jack of all trades and which ones are One Trick Ponies, I took all Tech trees and gave them 1 point for each of these categories:

Archers: Features Arbalester – Features Hand Cannoneer – Features a viable Heavy Cavalry Archer (only misses 1 tech at most but never Thumb Ring) – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option.

Infantry: Features a viable Champion/Two-Handed Swordsman (can't miss Supplies and/or last infantry armor, except Goths) – Features a viable Halberdier/Pikeman (can't miss last infantry armor and generic FU Pikemen are not counted, except Goths) – Features Eagles – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option.

Cavalry: Features a viable Hussar/Light Cav (can't miss last cavalry armor and Bloodlines) – Features a viable Paladin/Cavalier (can't miss last cavalry armor and Bloodlines, except Celts) – Features Heavy/Imperial Camel – Features Battle Elephant – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option.

Siege: Features Siege Ram (or Capped Ram with bonus) – Features Onager – Features Heavy Scorpion (or Scorpion with bonus) – Features Bombard Cannon – Features a bonus for Trebuchets – Features a Unique Unit.

Monks: Features a Monastery with less than 2 Monk technologies missing.

Extra: Features a bonus that makes different army production viable (Aztecs: Carry capacity + Faster unit production; Chinese: Tech discount; Vikings: Free Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart)

The results of all points given to each civ are shown in the image below:

EDIT: Vietnamese actually get 10 points! Credit goes to u/coolio9876

I know I applied my own personal criteria to do the rankings, but, do you agree with the results? What do you think? Let me know with your comments! Have a nice weekend!

    Wondering if this hotkey exists.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:37 AM PDT

I love making eagles in Feudal. Not for fighting but just for more vision, make them and send them around the map, until I have like 4-5 eagles just running everywhere. At some point I'll have my upgrades and will actually want to fight with them.

How would select all my eagles all over the map, and send them to one spot if I wanted?

Notes: Control grouping them as they spawn, way too much brain power.

Using, select all military, is fine until you have other military. Needless to say you want Eagles going to different places than your rams.

I'm hoping someone has a trick for me to instantly select all my eagles with one button!

    Server problems and the developers

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:01 AM PDT

I feel like every time someone complains about the server issues/lag/whatever the current ongoing issues afflicting this game are, there are just as many people who immediately come to the devs defense.

We shouldn't just default to turning a blind eye to problems with this game and defend the devs. Them supporting a game beyond its release is part of the price you pay upfront for the game, this comes down to customer service. When you buy a video game which has a major part of it being online multiplayer, supporting the game and keeping servers working is not a charity work they are doing for us out of the good of their hearts. We have paid for this service.

I'm not suggesting people who hassle the devs are right by any means, I'm saying we have every right to be disappointed and voice those opinions loudly.

Tl/dr: People don't need to side with the devs when people complain.

Why is ranked allowed to go on forever?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:06 AM PDT

If the goal is to determine which player has the upper skill then after some predetermined time we should be able to tell.

I guess I'm frustrated that I can't play a ranked game over a 1 hour break because the game might actually go longer than that.

For players that love endless trash wars and holding up pee for hours, then unranked would be a good place to play those games.

    Other benefits:

    • players are discouraged from playing hide the last vil

    • the gameplay might turn more aggressive since the players know the game will end after a set time

    Teammate multiplayer not working

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I have been trying 2 days to play with friend and event trying for more than 1 hour, there is no way.

Sometimes a friend does not recieve. other times, the game was disconnected when there was a match. we just distonnected by frustration.

Is incredible that something like that happens in a nearly 2 years old game. Always there is matching problems but this is another level.

    Some noob questions

    1. If you select all your villagers accidentally and task them to something else, is there any way of correcting it?

    2. Is there any way of switching the camera when you switch to a control group?
