I got flamed by a toxic player 11

For context, the guy goes double range forward every single game. I played 5 times against that guy and each time it was the exact same strat.

I found that going scouts early and killing a few vills and walling works well against him because you cant keep his archer flood outside your base while dealing damage. And then you can start massing skirms to defend. It turns out that he does not like my strategy 11.

At some point he started to flame me wrote this. It made me laugh so hard.

After faving Nomad for a while, I gotta say that most games on that map are great. What would you say, what percentage of games on certain maps were really good games?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:12 AM PDT

I think Nomad has almost 100% good games with Random Civ. When there is one of the meta-civs (Spanish, Malians, Persians, Lithuanians) against a non-meta-civ it is way lower, so overall I'd say something like 80%.

I think Four Lakes is my favorite map in that regard. Majority of games is great. It basically only feels not good when I fuck up by myself. 90%+ good games I think. (Just that they tend to be kinda stressful.)

I think both share that you can switch focus when losing on one front so that there are more swings and more options to make something happen, Arabia is more linear.

With Arabia I'd say it's something like 50%. Many games are just standard-Feudal-Meta, one executes better and wins early Castle Age. Other than those, there are many good games and some great.

Arena has many bullshit games I think. Trebs and BBC dominate too hard, getting pushed by a 2-farm-eco isn't particularly fun in my opinion, some Castle Age strats feel a bit too strong and kinda unfair too defend against. I dislike relic wars and treb wars, but I like booming and strong Imperial army comps. I think I like maybe 30% of the games on that map. Without clown strats probably over 50%.

Black Forest is a bit like 0% great games, 100% good games, you know what you get.

That said, it probably makes sense to distinguish by "I didn't enjoy that game" - "I enjoyed that game" - "that game was amazing". Amazing games would be probably like Arabia 15-25%, Nomad 30%, Four Lakes 40%, Arena 10%.

I think Acropolis ranks quite high for me too, always fast paced with multiple attacking angles and very effective tech switches pretty often. Might hit my Nomad-30%-great-games-standard.

Golden Pit and Gold Rush tend to feel like civ-win, if not they are pretty good too. Probably both over 20% great games as well and over 70% good games. (I'd say they are my favorite team game maps btw.)

A map which I do like on paper but which tends to play out a bit meh is Valley. I presume that might be because I don't have a good intuition for that one yet. Quite different things can be strong there. Should make for many good games once I understand it better, but so far 40% good games or less, can't really recall games that felt amazing.

Serengeti feels similar for me with the addition that it feels too much speed based, when I lost there I usually feel like I just played too slow which sucks. Not sure if I even had a game on that map that I really liked at all, maximum is basically "it was okayish" if I manage to get a lead.

If current version of sicilian cavalier can be in the game, why isnt Byzantine Cataphract somehow changed ?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:11 AM PDT

To give some context, outside of the classical rant-fan-post -> While numerous cavalry unique units, or unique technologies have been added into the game, cataphract has stayed almost all the same ever since AoK changes came to be.

Just imagine that somebody told you about cavalry unit, that has high pierce armor, and also negates bonus damage dealt to it with decent melee armor, suddenly you have a tank that has no clear counterchoices except brute strenght that not alot of civs have at their disposal.. With this said.. ->

-> Currently Cataphract sits at some mediocre tier of a cavalry hierarchy. Getting beaten down by sometimes cheap, relatively weak, cavalry among some civs.

    Most notable killers are:

    1. Steppe Lancers -> Mostly thanks to being a cost effective choice
    2. Knight lines -> Up until you reach FU cata, you lose against these -> Later losing against prominent cavalier civs + paladins (celtic paladin is exception)
    3. Unique Cavalry Units -> All of them except Tarkan and Magyar Huszar
    4. Honorable mention -> Farimba Light Cavalry

Although i understand (and also like) that byzantines are not supposed to always go for one unit solely to win games, i feel like the absence of a power-housed unit inside their tech tree leaves them really weak in later stages of the game (unless you just pour trash units all the game to steamroll enemy later with gold composition).

Thus i would make these changes to cataphract itself.

    - Current statistic (Elite) New statistic (Elite)
    Hit Points 110 (150) 120 (160)
    Attack 9 (12) 9 (12)
    Attack Bonuses +9 (+12) +8 (+10)
    RoF 1.8 (1.7) 1.8 (1.7)
    Melee Armor 2 (2) 4 (5)
    Pierce Armor 1 (1) 2 (2)
    Armor Classes Cavalry +12 (+16) Cavalry +6(+10)
    Speed 1.35 1.25
    LoS 4 (5) 4 (5)

With the aim towards beefy cataphract, i tuned down its major cards (Infantry bonus damage + anti-cav bonus damage)

With the updated stats, Generic FU Halb, kills Cataphract in 7 hits instead of 8, leaving them a bit more vulnerable to bonus damage. Looking at other units though, Cataphract will hold up much better against pretty much all other units.

However, despite looking beefy with the updated stats, they're not as intimidating as they used to be, since they're even slower than boyar (-0,05 speed), leaving them vulnerable to hit&run tactics, and it can hurt in large scale fights where bumping plays a major role.

But those are just my thoughts, what i wanted to achieve with these changes was to give cataphract a tankier role among byzantine army, with the first idea of increasing melee armor only by +1 for basic, and +2 for elite version. It looks probably kinda wild but let me give your thoughts, what do you think about it and or any of you personal preference or change that you might like to see on cataphracts.

P.S: Inb4 i had the idea of moving logistica to castle age, and give them new imperial UT while applying greek-fire into tech tree bonus -> that would exclude all the changes ive written above.

Why make multiple markets in 1v1?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 04:13 AM PDT

A player I went up against in 1v1 made multiple markets in the middle of the map. When I asked why he did that, he wouldn't tell.

Is there any benefit to doing this? Is there an exploit I'm unaware of?
