    I face off against Frank's 13.4% of the time (according to AOE companion) , by far the most picked civ (around my 950 elo). I thought I was getting pretty good at dealing with them, but just lost the last 3 matchups in a row and still only a 43% won rate against them.

    I thought maybe if we openly discuss facing them, we might take away some of their power.

    Feels like their FC into 6 knights is so predictable, it should be easily countered with early, heavy feudal aggression. But even at 19pop scouts they are sometimes walled, just make a few spears and still get to castle age quicker. And while trying to defend against the first 6 knights, more and more arrive from 2 stables.

    Connection Problems

    Friends and I wanna play atm but we cannot even connect to multiplayer because the server is not responding at all. I guess we aren't alone?

    Edit: Managed to connect, any other might try to connect now?

    Just a quick question. Our current map pool is almost two weeks old, but we still haven't gotten the chance to vote for a new one. Will there not be a new map pool or did the devs just forget?

    Mouse lagging in game. Any ideas?

    I've noticed my mouse is lagging/stuttering loads during gameplay and it seems to have worsened. I've lowered the graphics in the in-game options but the issue is still there (the game is like 100 years old though so wouldn't think this would be an issue). I've also tried a different mouse and new batteries - no joy. The game is running from Steam via an external USB hard drive.

    Does anyone know how I can fix this? Please ELI5 cos I'm not a techy person. Thanks :)

    Any difficult cheese builds out there?

    1200 player, I've been trying to improve my play by adding things to the mix. First it was scouting with sheep, then It was finding boars fast enough to take on 7th and 11th vil. After that it was pushing my deer. I've noticed I'm getting a lot better eco early and I want to know how to capitalize on it. I've been doing Huang rush and it seems to work well. Any suggestions for other difficult all in cheese strats?

    Can't unlock civilization victory achievements (multiplayer)

    Hi. My friend and I have been having trouble unlocking civilization victory achievements (the "Win a game as the *insert civ*" type of achievement), and can't seem to figure out what is causing it :(

    We play regular games, just the two of us with bots, no mods, only settings we change are victory type (set to Conquest), and max pop (250), bot difficulty is set to Moderate, and map type is set random from a pool with land, water and mixed maps. Besides that we just leave everything else at default.

    It's been happening for a while, but before it started we were able to unlock achievements without any problems. We used to think it was because of the bot commands we sent through chat but even if we didn't we still wouldn't get any achievement at the end of the game.

    Also, other achievements seem to be working just fine, we just got the Sheep Hoarder achievement last night.

    Any idea how we can fix this?

    New Arabia finally brings back the joy of Arabia!

    Some people liked the diversity of old arabia, others liked the aggression etc. But what I really loved and felt that the new DE arabias lacked, was the minute 1 panic to see if you can get your sheep under the tc without idle time. You know that feeling has really been lacking with the new arabias, you always has the livestock in range. Well recently I've been pleasantly suprised to find that the new arabia reintroduces that same sense of blind panic! There I was doing the usual scout in an arc around the tc, have sheep scouting when I realised that despite scouting a ring around my tc and decent vision - there was no woodline visible in distance! Man the adrenaline wondering "where tf are the woodlines?", i really missed that.

    If I had to criticize the devs tho, and this is a small thing - I eventually did find a woodline. I hope in the future the devs can make that aspect more up to chance as well. From looking at the previous arabia version, it seems like that the devs are working on that as well, which is great news!

    I always die to Maa/scouts, archers in my base.

    Im 1250 but my highest elo is 1420. im supposed to be around 1300 generally, but im loosing games non stop.

    When units get into my base, my enemy micros like a god with groups of units all over my base. Meanwhile, i do not quickwall (bacause its an ability i do not possess), or i try to fight back with vils and all my vils die and its gg, or i garrison all the vils and like 5 of them still die and all my eco is idle and its gg.

    I pretty much need to fully wall or i die.

    How do i deal with units running around my base killing all my vils?

    Yes, i do make army, but it's always out of position, and if i try to attack my enemy he has all resources quickwallled and is able to defend everything without loosing a single vil.

    Drush vs. Pre-mill Drush

    So I'm currently sitting at 12xx elo for a while and thought it would be a good time now to mix in some drush strategies into my play-style instead of the always same MAA->archers or scouts. I tried a pre-mill drush BO with Britons I found online and with the first games I had "mixing" success, but it was very much fun still.

    While I have general knowledge about the game (I guess) I recognised that I am not really aware of the strategic difference between Drush and Pre-mill Drush...which one is better in which situation and what are the main differences between these both two? Thx!

    [OPEN DISCUSSION] How to Civ Design Properly

    A fundamental component of every strategy game is diversity, having multiple tactical routes to maneuver into, not being forced to play repetitively. In theory a match you've just played can be polarly different from your upcoming match (within the limits of the game), that's the best indication we have for a prosper strategy game, a sandbox for ideas that allows maximum freedom and viablity.

    Regarding AOE II, there are many contributors to this ideal situation, the type of map you're playing, the actual generation of that map, your ability to choose different units and win conditions, the playstyle of your opponent, and the most major contributor to diversity- Civilization.

    Now when to comes to Civilizations, we want them to be unique enough to make the playing experience diverse and refreshing and of course strategically triggering, but also being commited to the overall frame and aesthetic boundaries of the game.

    In AOE II some Civs have identity crisis, where you're stuck in a generic enviornment with no stimulants for inovation, you're forced to rely on boom/post-imp composition/techs to fully utilize the uniqueness of your Civ. That's a structural failure within the Civ design, a great example for that is Portuguese.

    The cruical component that's resposible for the classification of each Civ is the basic 4 to 6 passive bonuses, the characterizers, those traits are not a luxurious Unique Techs nor unachievable Unique Units, they're right there by default, not requiring any economical approach or a certain playstyle to be felt for the most part.

    Examples of Civ's attributes that increase diversity and functionality with high relevancy:

    • Britons: Foot Archers have +1/+2 range
    • Byzantine: Camels, Skirmishers and the Spearman lines are 25% cheaper
    • Celts: Infantry units move 15% faster starting in the Feudal Age
    • Chinese: Start game with three extra vills, but with -200f and -50w
    • Mongols: Hunters work 40% faster
    • Saracens: Foot Archers have +3 attack against buildings
    • Saracens: Market is 100w cheaper, and commodity trading fee is 5%
    • Teutons: Towers garrison 10pop
    • Aztecs: Monks gain 5 HP for every researched Monastery technology
    • Koreans: Tower upgrades are free
    • Berbers: Genitours are available at the Archery Range
    • Khmer: Villagers can garrison in Houses and drop off food from farms without needing drop site
    • Khmer: Scorpions have +1 range
    • Bulgarians: Can build Krepost.
    • Cumans: Can build a Siege Workshop and a Town Center in Feudal Age
    • Lithuanians: Each garrisoned Relics gives +1 attack to Knights and Leitis
    • Burgundians: Economic upgrades are available oneage earlier and cost -50% food
    • Bohemians: Chemistry and Hand Cannoneer available in Castle Age
    • Poles: Stone Miners generate gold in addition to stone
    • Huns: Start the game with -100w but maximum pop cap

    These bonuses make the playing experience so diverse and unique, they encourage us to go for unique tacticas, different units, they create a short term power spike that we can use for our benefit rather than a plain generic trait that is either barely felt or belong to the post imp territories where identity is much easier to achieve anyway.

    Here are some of my ideas of Civ bonuses that can change the gameplay yet not fully ruining the AOE II status quo. hopefully they can turn a Civ (any Civ, no balance included) into a noticable one with a playful identity:

    • Battle Elephants have +2 pierce armor at Castle Age (no Plate Barding Armor, no Bloodlines)
    • Skirmishers have +1/+2 bonus damage vs. Vills at Feudal/Castle Age
    • Spearman available at the Dark Age (1 damage and 20 HP)
    • Outposts cost no stone (no Town Patrol)
    • Siege Units move 5%/10% faster
    • Get 5 free Villager per every Castle built
    • Each Outpost can be upgraded to a Tower with the cost of 150 Stone
    • Archers move 5% faster
    • Lumberjacks no need a drop site (no wood upgrades at all)
    • Deer Hunters can carry up to 100 Food
    • Textile: An upgrade that is available at Feudal after Loom is being teched. gives 10 HP and +1 pierce armor at the cost of 75 Gold (50 seconds)
    • Two Villagers can work the same Farm
    • Slave: An additional Town Center Unit to Villager, cost of 85 Gold however 15s training time (instead of 25s) same work rate
    • Every building you destory gives you 75 Wood

    Let me know what's YOUR very unique ideas for a potential Civ bonuses, be wild, be radical, would be nice if you'd attach a balance suggestion to moderate the bonus. Remember bonuses must be noticable and highly relevant, don't be shy, be bold, and try not to rely on post-imp indentity components. Consider it an orphan bonus - not commited to any current Civ we got.

    Any good arena "flank" build order for arena TGs?

    I have seen many build orders for arena defining "boom into some unit ". Or fastest 3)4 TC booms. But they usually don't work as flank in arena TGs. Couldn't find a comprehensive BO for flanks in TGs. Please share if you know of any.

    What in the world is this new monstrosity 11. Don't even play lobbies tbh. And in game chat is always clean lol. Funny part is, there is no suspension duration shown. And sam I supposed to call some tech support to check on this? xD. Sad thing is, won't be able to communicate with fellow players for now :(

    Cannot set resolution to 1280:1024

    I have just installed AoE2:Conquerors and I cannot change resolution to 1280x1024.

    The option is there in the game menu, but it cannot be selected (I can switch only between 1024x768 and 800x600).

    I found some old discussions with links to some wide-screen fix, but those links are working no more.

    Does anyone have solution for this? Thank you.

    Game not saving map bans?

    Currently I only have arena banned, lets say I ban another map Gold Rush. After a restart of the game still only arena is banned and gold rush is not banned. Any ideas why the game is not saving map bans?

    Is there anyone that provides such a service? I am low elo (~775) and just looking for some general critiques of my play. Its much harder for me recognize when I make mistakes. I've read a whole bunch and played a whole bunch but feel like I'm stagnating.
