What have been some of your favourite "what the fuck is happening?" moments?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 06:36 AM PST

This question brought to you by getting vil rushed after about 20 mins in a nomad game recently. The TCs were pretty close (which was my mistake as I actually scouted the oppo TC and didn't notice/had already started the foundation) and I got brutally towered, had to abandon the TC completely as both it and my woodline were ranged by about 4 towers. Managed to relocate eco behind this and click up with a couple of defensive towers and Viking eco, then I saw a swarm of red dots on the mini-map coming for my TC. My opponent had realised that I had no vils anywhere near the TC and thought, "I'm just going to go and batter it down for gg". And it would have been! But I managed to rush all my vils back, repair and garrison and fight with a couple of MAA, killed like 10 enemy vils and then hit Castle Age and they called the gg. Went from a near certain loss to a win because of a completely crazy minute. Just nomad things!

So what are some of your best stories of moments in games that have made you laugh out loud or wonder what the fuck is happening? The kind of stuff that would make a great "Legend Of..." T90 video, ya know?

    Punishing inconsistency

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 08:59 PM PST

There's something weird about my experience in AoE2's online play. I play team games mostly cause the 1v1 just doesn't entertain me. The experience has been wildly inconsistent.

The first 30 games I played I seemed to get paired with evenly matched opponents, learned a few good strategies, I know roughly the build orders I need. I won some, I lost some, I stuck around ELO 900-1000. Then I started winning some games more regularly. Got up to 1100 ELO. Then I don't know what happened.

I get paired pretty consistently with partners way below my ELO and put up against people way above my ELO. Recently got 4v4 match where the average ELO difference between the sides was about +300 in favor of my opponents. It's been like this for a bout 20 games where either I'm hilariously outmatched or underwhelmed by team performance. I dunno what it is either but I keep getting this bulleyes on my back cause I am rushed and focused down 60-70% of my games (where 25% would make more sense with a 1/4 odds). I've even begun anticipating 3-4 players ignoring my teammates and rushing me down no matter what. I can wall up, build lots of archers, skirms, you name it but it doesn't really matter if you have 3-4 economies up against you. The best i can hope for now days is to just hold on long enough to get help.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Did I fuck with the algorithm? Should I start a new profile or something? Git gud doesn't seem like a great answer here cause honestly I don't think I have it in me to get beyond intermediate beginner status with my work schedule. The initial run of games was fantastic, but now its just not worth it to try anymore. Is this just going to be an experience outside my grasp?

    Campaign Genocide episode #8 Genghis #1 #2

Genghis. Genocide run feels extremely fitting for this one.

Not much to be said about the first one. It's an old mission. I remember all the Khara-Khitai locations. So I will share a few tidbits not everyone might know. There are two relics. The one in the west most people get and one to the north behind Naiman base. That one is protected by a high ground Mangonel behind a palisade, so it's the most work.Naiman and Taychi'uds switched colours in DE for some reason.Speaking of that. You obviously annihilate those back into stone age. Nice little score of 30/30 at the end of the mission for them. I chose them mostly because it makes more sense since they are initially your enemy in the next mission. The only thing that makes me wonder is where the hell did I lost one unit. I don't play deathless, but I try to preserve units when I can especially in baseless missions.

Way too many colours visible at the end of the game, but I don't condone treachery.

    Kushluk

Now this was interesting. By the nature of the mission objective, Kushluk must die last. The initial game plan is clear. Get Taychui'd base, lose no units. Build up base. Defend two or three Khara-Khitai attacks. Drop a Castle on them while they are still in Feudal wreck their base with Knights because they kill anything they build. Seach for stragglers.

Kushluk's initial army kinda threw me off. I will admit that. It broke once it met my Castle, because the only Siege he makes are Scorpions. So I build up an army of Mangudai and Steppe Lancers (less collision) and got on with his base. He is fairly active rebuilder which was annoying. Plus there was the matter of losing quite a few units to Castle (which he also tries to rebuild... with one villager... but he can be sneaky about it). Eventually he was drawn out and I accindetally killed him, so that required reload. I watched for that more carefully the next time and then killed him... while there were still two Villagers alive. So I reloaded again. Initially I was running around with army on Neutral Stance and destroying buildings while letting him hit my units, but eventually he switched targets and ran into Castle fire. I reloaded again. And at a cost of 7 out of 8 Villagers I created a cage for him.

    Yeah that green little shade

Then I looked for the rest of his production and Villagers. Score was a big helper here. Eventually I was certain enough even without resigning (to show the map) that Kushluk is the last man standing. In the end I decided to torture him in his box by killing him with a single Steppe Lancer standing behind the wall.

Finally that sweet little block of orange at the end.

    Are you an Aoe2 ‘Sleeper’

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 08:27 PM PST

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but perhaps 'The Sleeper' is a legitimate player type.

I play lots of TG and the Elo in the community I play with ranges from 850-2k2.

There is this one dude that (ELO 1v1 1100 & TG 1500) - On his good day will destroy a 1900 - Normal day around 1100 - Bad day 900

This only came up because recently we were playing (I was Spec) a 3v3, and he matched up on the flank opposite a 1900.

The game proceeded with those two being left to it. The 1100 destroyed his opposite and pressured the pocket and GG.

We are all on voice and reviewed the rec as we always do with CA - and he literally had 0 idle TC up until IMP (finished with 1min). Full production perfectly executed BO, crazy micro, and never floating excess res. He just said sometimes he gets in the zone.

We were all waiting for the 1900 to make excuses, but he admitted that he was simply outclassed. He didn't go easy (known for being cutthroat). No bad day, no lame, no TC boar kill, no 2v1 or "rainbows". In fact, he said that he kept checking the player colours to his disbelief. This was funny.

Anyway, someone called him the sleeper, and I thought it was a good way to describe someone that on their day can perform out of their skin, way above their ELO.

Sure I think we've all seen people that have good games and potentially plays above their average +100-200 ELO. But we're talking about a special few that can go to another level - but rarely do because of inconsistency or whatever.

I just thought to post here and see if anyone else had seen this before or even if you are a sleeper?

    More challenging after recent updates/patches?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 12:51 PM PST

I started playing against Extreme AI in the last month or so, and my win rate was about 50-60%. I play with Lithuanians mostly, and I've been playing a lot on Black Forest (which I feel is a bit easier than some of the more open maps because you can wall off more easily). A couple questions for anyone who might know:

    1. Did the Black Forest map become more open recently? It feels almost more like Arabia. I liked Black Forest before because it felt a bit easier to start challenging myself against Extreme AI.
    2. From what I've seen on SOTL posts, infantry got decent upgrades with this recent patch. Did Incas receive any new bonuses? I have been playing against them the last week and I am getting absolutely merked now lol. Haven't won a game. I used to be able to do Scout rushes pretty successfully even against Extreme AI, but against the Incas now it feels pointless. They seem to accumulate infantry incredibly fast. I also notice they will drush every 2nd or 2rd game, which surprised me.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!

    Team Empire Wars Meta

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 11:36 AM PST

I have too many questions, but I would like to know how you think empire wars should be played as a team.

At my level (~1250 in RM 1v1, ~1100 Team EW) the best I've found is the scout opening (make two stables as fast as possible), due to their mobility, and then transition to knights or crossbowmen depending on whether you are pocket or flank (like the RM arabia meta). But openings with archers in feudal seem to me less effective than in classic RM.

To choose civilizations, since almost everything is defined in feudal, I think Goths are bad (although I love them), and full cav civs are good (Berbers, Franks, etc), even Bulgarians for the armour bonus (although my stats don't say the same xD).

What are your experiences? Thank you!

Different way of thinking when playing archers?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 03:41 PM PST

Lately i'm playing more archers civs in 1v1's and now i start to believe playing 1v1 with archers/crossbows is far more difficult than playing knights. Belowe are some examples what makes me belive this:

To give you guys some idea of my skill level: My 1v1 elo reached 1300 at its peak when i played skirm into knights. Pretty agressive in castle and mostly 1 tc. And my tg elo is somewhere 1850-1950. My current 1v1 elo is 1100 now by playing m@a into archer with s tier archer civs.

    • the lack of mobilty makes attacking more risky because you can not always chose when to fight or not. If you dont know exactly what your opponent is doing, you might fight onagers and +2 knights.
    • you have to be walled al the time because 3 or 4 knights in your eco gives you a lot of trouble. At least it will makes me panic and overreact most of times. You can not send army quickly to clean it.
    • it feels like you play way more blind and without map controll. Resulting some times in a forward castle in your face, making it even harder to move out and attack. Even expanding your eco to the sides of the map is difficult now because than your base is not walled anymore.
    • when you attack, you either get in and kill some vills and idle eco sometime before knights or mangonel comes to clean. Making the trade not so effective. Or even worse, you dont get kills and get cleaned right away. If your lucky you safe some units by microing it back home. Using a lot of apm and resulting in idle tc and floating res.
    • what hapens to me is: i make archers/crossbow, they make scout/knights. I make more archers they make more knights, than i make pikes, than they make skirms, countering both of my units. In the meantime my vills get killed by knights and my army by skirms...

I experienced this by droping 200 elo back to 1100. And makes me think: what am i doing wrong? Or what is my misconseption here? Am i playing archers like i'm would play cav civs while there are big differences in strategy i forget about?

I'm looking forward to see if anyone can point out the biggest changes in strategy / desicion making maybee even power spikes, between archer and knight gameplay.

    Campaign Genocide episode #9 Genghis #3 #4 #5 #6

    We are going to China!

And it's pretty much standard way of playing the mission. Take Engineers' base, boom, defend from Tanguts and Hsi Hsia (mostly Tanguts because they have Rams), prepare a landing party to get a foothold North of Jin, Treb down Jin defenses, protect Trebs with Mangudais and then take your sweet time to slowly rinse and repeat with Hsi Hsia, then Tanguts and Song last. Make Spies in the process to be sure there are no stragglers. Once Song gave up, so did Engineers who were without a unit or even a building for some time.

You can see my favorite thing - little orange monolith at the end.

Persia - this time the mission objective Scouts are incredibly helpful. We know that Persians surrender once all Castles and their Wonder are destroyed. This means we can leave Wonder up and murderlize the entire map in the meantime.

Most notable moment of the mission was me forgetting that Russians are actually pretty damn agressive early on so I had to defend their first attack by Subotai running around while TC shoots up the army. Ram had to be dealt with Villager knives. Thankfully Russian Cav was seeing red and focused on Subotai. Once I built my favorite structure in the game (yes, Castle) things got a lot smoother. Persians were mostly dealth with just Castles, Monks and Converted Elephants.
I mostly pushed from Russian side because I had a standing army there. Mangudai wreck anything Russians make and while their early attacks are strong, their defenses and eco are totally not. Generally speaking in this mission your enemies don't produce too many villagers, which is helpful for researching Spies. I kept up Russian Market (almost destroyed it accidentally) for trade income. Then it was just about destroying production buildings and catching every Villager on the map. Then just Treb the Wonder.

Yeah, I didn't exactly hurry here. I think I went to feed the dog and cats once I killed all units.

    Central Europe
The nature of the objective in this mission helped me a lot. You can kill everything while avoiding the flags. I walled in the base while booming, made a small army of Mangudai and Trebs and destroyed Poles, while avoiding the flag. Then I cleared the centre of the map to build 4 Castles against Bohemian onslaught. Lost one, two were really cracked. Siege Onagers are an insane unit en masse (unless you have Houfnice).
Then I went on to clear the Germans (who actually seem to be Austrians given their location in the south btw). Killed some of their Villagers to drop the gold cost of Spies and cleared them out. Once a lonely Halberdier died to Castle fire.
I picked up the Leiciai to the east just for fun and proceeded to Treb down static defenses of Bohemians. This is where my knowledge of the old missions (and Spies) helped. Bohemians don't send their entire army. There are Monks and Siege Onagers stuck on high ground or behind a wall. These needed to be cleared. Which was done with Trebs from a safe distance (Monks with Mangudai).
I picked the Polish and German flag. Those two didn't surrender even after that happened.

But... they all surrendered once I killed the remianing Bohemian units.

You can see that the flag has not been picked up. Yet they all surrendered. Still you have to get it to win.

    https://preview.redd.it/t10llezqc6781.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=481d85b6ba835bfd93c1557fac21f36c555d3de3

Just a tidbit. I didn't even actively attempted that, but Germans didn't kill a single unit.

    Hungary

This was... actually far more climactic than I expected. Mostly because I forgot something.

I didn't rush the mission, because unless it allows me to take out an enemy early in this run, there is rarely a big advantage in that. So once again - boom, defensive Castles, Mangudai and Trebs. I moved out with 50 Mangudai and 5 Khans supported by 6 Trebs.

And I completely forgot that Hungarians blow up the damn bridge. Last time I played this mission I went for the achievement. And this time I didn't build anything on the other side. And I didn't have a Monk there. (AI could have had Heresy for all I care, but healing would have been nice). So I eventually found out that this army has to destroy it all. The army was badly banged up mostly because of Heavy Scorpions but they did it. Even without Spies. Took out the production and left a TC up.
Score was a big helper here, because it eventually started to imply that there are no resources beign gathered. Hungary ran out of food so I was free to destroy the TC.

    \"Masters of the Universe\"

This mission didn't require as much thought process as Joan #5 or Genghis #2, as much scum saving as Saladin #5, but it ended up being very exciting.

    Genocide complete.

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 13 Week 13: Lithuanians vs Magyars

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 09:19 PM PST

Hussar UU vs Huszar UU!! (ALSO: Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it! <3)

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Aztecs vs Slavs, and next up is the Lithuanians vs Magyars!

    Lithuanians: Cavalry and Monk civilization

    • Start with +150f
    • Spearmen and Skirmishers move +10% faster
    • Each garrisoned Relic gives Knights and Leiciai an additional +1 attack (max. +4)
    • TEAM BONUS: Monasteries work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Leitis (Powerful medium cavalry whose attacks ignore unit armor)
    • Unique Unit: Winged Hussar (Replaces regular Hussars; stronger and gain small bonus damage vs gunpowder)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Hill Forts (Town Centers gain +3 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Tower Shields (Spearmen and Skirmishers gain +0/+2 armor)

    Magyars: Cavalry civilization

    • Villagers kill wolves in one strike (still can't attack Ornlu ;D)
    • Forging, Iron Casting, and Blast Furnace are free
    • Scout-line costs -15%
    • TEAM BONUS: Foot Archers +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Magyar Huszar (Powerful light cavalry with bonus damage vs siege weapons)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Corvinian Army (Magyar Huszars no longer cost gold)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Recurve Bow (Cavalry Archers gain +1 attack, +1 range)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Two new favorites when it comes to cav civs here! For 1v1 Arabia and other open maps, Lithuanians are a far more popular pick among high level players. The civilization can just be so frustrating to play against with their super fast start due to their +150 food, that they can go for the early drush builds better than most civs. From there, they possess just about every tool they could need militarily. However, Magyars are certainly no slouches on open and aggressive maps. What they lack in Dark Age is made up by their early Feudal Age scouts (or even M@A) openings. Neither civ has a long-term eco bonus, so how do you see these early military advantages play out during the course of a game?
    • On closed maps, Lithuanians are certainly more popular as well. Unlike Magyars, their early game boost is not dependent on going for a specific strategy, so the Lithuanian FC monks play is quite deadly. Beyond that, they can open standard just fine, and possess plenty of solid late game tools to boot. That said, Magyars may be slower at the start, but they do possess one of the most cost-efficient armies in the entire game. How do you see these civs fighting it out on Arena, Hideout, Fortress, and BF?
    • In team games, I'd say both civs are fairly similar in popularity when it comes to playing the pocket position (keeping in mind that Magyars are a fair bit better on flank). Lithuanians have the strong start and late game cavalry as always - but remember that they can only get +6 attack now on their Knights and Leiciai in Imperial Age. Magyars, meanwhile, have a more powerful extended Feudal Age play compared to Lithuanians, but they will start to fall off in post-Imp, where their Paladins are totally generic. Which civ would you rather have as your cavalry-spammer?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Khmer vs Saracens. Hope to see you there! :)

Ranked multiplayer etiquette, strategies and roles of the team members

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 07:03 AM PST

I am attracted to the idea of playing ranked team multiplayer games. I'm not worried about winning/losing, I know that in the long/mid run my ELO will normalize and I'll find good matchups. But I have never played serious multiplayer games and I have 0 idea of what will be expected of me. Can anyone point out a guide or kindly explain the basics of such games? Thank you!

Just for reference, I am probably below 1000 ELO in 1v1. I have played two ranked games, won one and lost the other. Probably would go down a bit if I played more frequently, but probably won't plummet down too hard. While I'm in no means an expert, I know the basics of the game. I just don't know how to play multiplayer team games :)

New Campaign proposals for civs without one

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 06:26 AM PST

New Campaign proposals for civs without one

Hi all! I'm pretty sure this has already been done, but I'd like to recap the existing official Campagins/Scenarios, and propose one Campaign for each of the civs that still doesn't have one. To be honest, all of them deserve their own 4-6 scenario tribute. I've written on the Table below all the Scenarios and which is the player's civ:

    https://preview.redd.it/fd1iqhscnw681.png?width=347&format=png&auto=webp&s=3792da69758e1bec90b51417270767b869b7364f

Note that I've written a C next to numbers below 5, and also next to Celts. Civs with a C are the ones without an official Campaign. I have included Celts because, let's face it, we will always remember William Wallace, but we also deserve a more challenging Celt Campaign. In the Table below I've listed the Heroes/Theme proposed for the civs without Campaign:

    https://preview.redd.it/kd8tt3einw681.png?width=777&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c308d658f6a9e0eed62f865ffc009586dc10786

I've tried to propose timelines where civs would fight against other civs. For example, Chinese, Japanese and Mayans were immersed on civil wars or wars between clans and dynasties that would mean that all scenarios would be "Player: Chinese. Allies: Chinese. Enemies: Chinese". That's why the scenarios I included have at least a couple of interactions with other civs.

The Celt Campaign is an obvious sequel to the Battle of Falkirk, which ended a bit more like what Edward Longshanks Campaign says, not as we learnt 20 years ago.

The Chinese Campaign is an interesting Chinese vs Turks pre-gunpowder matchup, with interesting landscapes and struggles for land.

The Japanese Campaign would include Kyoto, as Toyotomi Hideyoshi was one of Oda Nobunaga's most trusted warriors, and his ambition lead to the invasion of Korea and China, thus starting war against both civs.

The Korean Campaign is an interesting defensive playstyle matchup, since Goryeo dynasty faced attacks/sieges from the Khitan during three wars, before having to face "fellow" Jurchens.

The Magyar Campaign features conquests of the first King of Hungary, who faced all type of European enemies.

The Mayan Campaign includes the first real power of Mayans after the old Mayan civ decline, and how they had to face the Spanish, who had already defeated the Aztecs.

The Persian Campaign would include Elephants, since it depicts Mahmud's rise and later invasion of North India.

The Slav Campaign would be a challenge for Moscow gaining power among the Rus' and later wars against Tatars and Mongols.

I couldn't decide who of these Seljuk/Ottoman heroes could be the best for a Campaign. I really feel the three of them would make three amazing Campaigns. The Seljuk Campaign (before gunpowder) would be challenging, with Turks not being able to create their strongest bonus units. Mehmed's Campaign would feature lots of land wars to conquer southeastern Europe. Suleiman's Campaign could have a more naval background, with their battles against Portuguese for the control of the Indian Ocean. In case you're wondering, Lepanto happened 5 years after Suleiman died.

Last but not least, the Viking Campaign can include scenarios spread among centuries, in which an old man tells kids the story of most notable Viking battles/raids/sieges, with different enemies all over the European coastline and even rivers.

I'd really like to have the time to work with the Scenario Editor, but I can only play from time to time. So I'd let more experienced designers and Devs to be convinced with any of these proposals. Do you like the idea of these "new" Campaigns (and forgive me if any of them has already been proposed)? Have a nice day!

Was there any relevance in using Goths to represent Russians in Genghis Khan campaigns ?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 09:10 AM PST

In the current version of the game, Slavs are obviously used to represent Russians in the 4th scenario from Genghis Khan campaign. But things haven't always been that way.

Back in Age of Kings or The Conquerors, there was no Slavs civilization. So they obviously had to pick another existing civilization instead. And they picked Goths.

My question is: does that have any kind of historical relevance, even a remote one ? Is there any link between Goths and Slavs ? Or is this just a historical nonsense, and they just pick Goths because they were, geographically, the closest civilization, and somehow Goths felt as the least bad choice ?

As a side note, I could ask the same question about Teutons being used to represent Magyars, since there was no Magyar civilization as well back then. As far as I know, this doesn't make any sense to me, they are two completely different civilizations.
