    The Boyar rush

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:07 AM PST

Do you wish your knight somehow had more attack and more armor? fear not there is a build.

You can do anything you want to survive feudal, i usually go for the scout rush into skirms (if needed).

Then when its time to click up you might be able to get away with 4 on wood, if you don't need any more skirms, about 12 on food and about 7 on gold, you want about 10-11 vills to go and collect stone.

Before you hit castle you can get blacksmith upgrades bloodlines, and gold mining tech, after you hit castle age you want to drop a castle ASAP, make knights and get bowsaw, after that you need to make a choice, do you want boyar + knights or boyar and a 2nd TC?

For Boyar + knights you want 19 on gold 19 on food and 6 on wood, you basically can't afford to do anything for a while but make a deathball and hope you win

For pure boyar you can get a 2nd TC quite fast, leave 3 on stone and your TC rally point on wood, 13 on gold, and slap down that 2nd TC.

    Pro's:
    You get a castle
    Stronger knights
Boyar produce in 15 sec, so its like having 2 stables (The best power to stone ratio for Cav unless you count konniks from kreposts)

    Con's:
you need to suddenly switch a lot of vills
    Can be quite tight
Building the castle is not that fast
    Notting special vs normal Crossbow

On giving advice to 800 elo players.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 07:15 AM PST

Hello everyone, wall of text incoming.

I'd like to start out with a disclaimer, as I worry I might otherwise come across as toxic in this post. There is absolutely nothing wrong about being low elo, and if you're just playing some casual games without tryharding then god bless you and I hope you have fun. I'm not here to tell you that you're playing the game 'wrong'. But there are people at lower elos that want to be competitive and want to 'get out' of the lower elos. I'm talking about how we as a community can best help these players. Or, perhaps, why helping them might be difficult for us.

A second disclaimer; I'm not here to tell people to play meta. While the meta is the way it is for a reason, there is plenty of space in this game to play not meta. Even at elos above 2k streamers and players find distinct play styles and win with off-meta strats, and do so not only against players ranked lower than themselves, but also against players with an elo similar to their own. Some examples would be Survivalist or Rubenstock's streams. And at lower elos there is infinitely more space to experiment.

    Introduction:

I like to ask questions about the game and seek advice, and I also like to try and give advice to people that ask for it, and help them how I can, as I have been helped by others. In a twitch chat some days ago someone said they were 800 elo and asked what age was best to focus on. I told them that at that elo, they would be best of simply focusing on dark age, and confidently told them that a clean dark age with an aggressive feudal opening would get them above 1k. He told me that everyone at his elo "had a BO".

So ok. I've never been at 800 elo. I decided I would go watch some arabia 800 elo games, and see if maybe I was wrong about how games were at lower elos. I watched a dozen or so games, with the players between 790 and 830 elo, and I then watched a couple of games between players at right around 900 elo, to see if they were very different. I was not impressed.

    The games:

There were a couple of wacky strategies that would fit right into T90 Low Elo Legends series, like a Cuman player that built his lumbercamp in a corner quite far from his tc, and upon reaching feudal sent some 20 vils over behind his opponent's base and built a 2nd tc on his opponent's gold, and in general seemed to have a strategy based on hoping the opponent doesn't find him. It worked, until it didn't.

But the vast majority of players seemed to have pretty straightforward strats, with men-at-arms being quite popular in the games I saw. Did they all have BOs? Well, if by BO you mean they built 2 houses at the start, put the first 6 vils on food, the next 3 or 4 to wood, and then take boar after that, then yes. They all had BOs. But beyond that, often they would get to feudal and do nothing. Sometimes they would make an archery range or a stable but make nothing out of it. None walled anywhere close to in time to stop or delay clean feudal aggression. But some did have 'proper' BOs; with the exception of my next point.

What was common for every single player in all the games I saw, both the ones at 800 elo and at 900 elo, was lots of tc idle time (which you can see on captureage). The least amount of tc idle time I saw someone had by the time they clicked up to feudal was 40 seconds, and most had well over a minute. I was impressed that one player had a 20 pop feudal, since that's not an easy build with a civ without eco bonuses, until I realized that the player had 2 minutes worth of tc idle time. A 20 pop build with 2 minutes worth of idle time gets to feudal at the same time as a 25 pop build, which is either a drush build or a fast castle.

None of the games I saw were close. They may have felt so to the players, but inevitably one player would get 6 or 7 (or more) vils ahead by mid feudal, either due to raids or more often idle tc time, and the games would continue until late castle or early imp with the villager discrepancy only growing, giving the player ahead vastly more resources. Invariably, I would feel the need to check that the players were actually at the same elo, which they were. As a rule, games were not won due to tactical or strategic decision making, but due to 'macro', ie making vils and spending one's resources.

Was there a difference between the games at 800elo and at 900elo? Yes, in fact there was a very distinct difference, albeit the sample size was very small. While some of the players at 800 elo did have in theory aggressive builds like men-at-arms, their play with these units was often very passive. They might move out on the map with the units, but were slow to actually send them into the enemy base to get damage done. At 900 elo the builds I saw were terrible; like a 21 pop fast castle eagle 'rush' with 4 minutes of idle time, but once the players got the units out and upgrades in, their play was very active and aggressive. At that elo players might not have a very good plan, but they stuck to it, which is way better than having a good plan but then hesitating and dawdling a bunch.

To illustrate, I'd like to discuss one game with the mindset of "what advice would I give the players in this game were they to ask for it".

In this game Red opened up with scouts into knights. The dark age and macro in general could have been cleaner, but overall red played fine. Blue had a similar feudal age timing to his opponent, made a barracks while on the way to feudal, but once he got to feudal did nothing. No stables, no range, no barracks units.

He did have a scout out on the map though, and managed to scout his opponents stable at a very nice time. However there was no reaction to scouting the stable, by which I mean he did not start making spearmen. Blue did eventually start making some walls, but they were much too late. I can't tell if the walls were a reaction to seeing the stable, but given that blue wasn't making any units I assume they weren't. In any case, four scouts ran in and killed the walling vils, and the first speaman only popped out after several vils were down and blue had been pushed off his berries. Red got to castle, made kngihts, and ran in and killed blue. Well played red.

So what advice can we give blue, were he to ask for it?

Well, saying that you should make spearmen if you scout the opponents stables seems so obvious that you would be toxic for saying it. Surely Blue simply didn't notice the stables? So do we tell Blue to pay attention to what he's scouting? Seems equally toxic.

The only advice I would give is to practice dark age (I repeat, every player in every game had lots of tc idle time in dark age) and to have a BO. Have some idea of what you want to do when you get to feudal, whether it be walling, maa, scouts, archers, or something else. For Red, the only advice would be macro and dark age.

In other words, I stand by the advice I've been giving all along. Players often don't feel like they lose to having a messy dark age because when they lose it's castle age. They might then reasonably come to the conclusion that they should focus on approving their castle age. But this would be a waste of their time. In general I'm a huge believer in practicing dark age.

So I'll just leave you with 3 pieces of advice, that you've probably already heard.

On macro: use hotkeys. You should not have to use the mouse at all for making vils. I have no way to tell whether the people in the games I saw used hotkeys or not, but I will dwell on this for a bit. The important hotkeys are "go-to tc/stable/range/etc" and "select-all tcs/stables/ranges" hotkeys. The select-all hotkeys allow you to make vils and units without moving your camera. This allows you to keep your camera on your army when making vils. Only use select-all tcs for making vils and units. "go-to tc" is the hotkey you use for making farms. Making farms and spending wood is extremely important for getting a good castle age (except when FC'ing). The weakness of this hotkey is that it takes you away from your army, which makes it inferior for making vils, but since farms anyway have to be placed it is perfect for this. Placing farms quickly is important, so get used to only using the mouse for the farm location, use hotkeys for "build" and "farm". The go-to hotkey for military buildings is only useful in quite rare situations, so use select-all for making military units. I use d for select-all-tcs and space for go-to-tc, but there are lots of hotkey layouts out there.

The one hotkey we're missing in the game is the select-all mills or lumbercamps. This means you can't get the eco upgrades without moving the camera to a mill or lumbercamp, which is unfortunate.

As old habits die hard, I suggest that if you have been using the mouse to make vils, you make it your absolute focus to stop doing this and use hotkeys to make vils instead. This is fundamental to being competitive.

On dark age/ BOs: The best tool for learning BOs and having a clean dark age is Cicero's interactive Build order mod. It had a large update a while ago which has made it much better. I always praise this mod whenever I have the opportunity to because it has helped me immensely, I even donated a small sum to Cicero's paypal. Some have argued that there are more competitive builds out there than the ones on the cicero mod, but certainly no one below 1k should argue this. I almost exclusively use the BOs on this mod and am currently sitting at 1498 elo. The arena BOs in particular are great. Lastly, I might be completely alone in this, but I actually find playing the scenarios and getting A or A+ in them also fun to do for their own sake.

If you download the mod, the scenarios are a bit difficult to find; They're in single player - skirmish - game mode - custom scenario and then you will get a list.

When learning the BOs you should first use the mod. Then, after getting to a point where you're consistently getting A or A+ (which is entirely possible, unlike what some people apparently think), you can either test the BOs in multiplayer or, which is what I recommend, queue up a game v easiest AI and try and do the BO on a new arabia map. After each attempt at this you should spectate your game with captureage and pay attention to idle tc time. Then compare your results with the BO, which you can find here https://buildorderreference.com

Captureage locks some functions behind a subscription, but idle tc time is not one of these.

I personally like to incorporate some deer pushing into my arabia builds, but there are reasons for not doing so.

Some of you may think this is too much work. I won't try and convince you otherwise. We play the game to have fun, and if this isn't fun for you, I won't argue you should do it. But putting in the work will get you to a much higher elo.

Which of the BOs would I recommend? Personally I think maa into archers is probably the one that's the best at that elo, since it's more difficult to counter than scouts. But any of the BOs should be good enough. The biggest weakness with the cicero BOs is that they don't include walling, which is something you want to do in any game that goes long enough.

And as a very last thing, the biggest strategic mistake the players at 800 elo did was that they were too passive. Very often they would have the much superior army and the opponent would be open to attack, yet the army stayed at home. I also struggle with passivity so I don't have any specific advice to give here, but do your best to be aggressive with your army.

I think there is a sort of optical illusion; when you play aggresively and lose the army because of it you think "oh, I shouldn't be so aggressive" but when you play passively and let your opponent get away with far too much you don't realize that you lost due to not being aggressive enough. When looking back a loss, try and see if you had some opportunity to attack that you didn't take.

    Conclusion

I believe that the reason lower elo players don't benefit from advice isn't that the advice is wrong; it's that they don't want to hear it. They think their dark age and macro is just a little messy, they reason that surely 5 seconds of idle tc time isn't all that separates them from being the Viper. Oh! if only it was just 5 seconds. Alas.

Yes, the game is very complex. It is not complex at 800 elo. If you're losing games at 800 elo, it is not due to making the wrong decisions, at least not on Arabia. Am I being toxic? I don't think so.

I feel confident in guaranteeing that doing these 3 things will not only get you out of 800 elo, but well above 1k.

Of the about 15 games I spectated I do not believe any of them would have been able to survive a clean Cicero build, as you'd be in feudal and have army in their base long before they got to feudal. Practice the BOs, remember to use hotkeys to make units, make farms, and be aggressive.

Thank you for reading, please let me know if you disagree or think I missed something.

Unusual thing I noticed about AI

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:22 AM PST

So I beat Hardest AI 1v1, just for fun I decided to try 2 Hard v 1 me on Arabia cause I hadn't done that yet...

So hardest AI reached feudal at 11 min when I reached at 9.50 or something... But hard AI in this second game reached feudal way faster at 10 min which was quite strange for a weaker AI... But doesn't mean it was smarter or something... But still weird how it always reaches Feudal before hardest I observed...

Anyone know any reason or answer for this?

Fortified Friday- Arena Match-ups: Incas, Burmese & Goths.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:58 AM PST

I'm still learning how a lot of matchups play out on Arena and with the sheer amount of civs we now have there are 100's of matchups all with their own little intricacies. I feel like I have a general idea for most civs but every so often I get caught out making the wrong unit type, taking the wrong strategic approach, or just forgetting that cavalry archers exist! I'm hoping some shared knowledge might speed up the learning process.

Each week I will randomly generate 3 civilisations for us to talk about.

This week: Incas - Burmese - Goths

Below are some questions to get the discussion started:

Which civ would you pick out of the pool if your opponent was going to be able to choose from the two remaining civs?

What's your opening going to be? Scouts for map control/relics into boom, Trush, Smush, Castle Drop, Straight Boom, Fast Imp, TC Douche?

How will the 3 civs fair in a beautiful monk war?

If they make it to IMP which of the civs has the better unit composition/deathball?

Which civ has the best 1TC YOLO play?

How will these civs do against some of the best Arena opening strats? (Turks Jannie/Mango and Bohemian Smush)

General thoughts on the civs and how they play on Arena?

What if there is FFA mod with replishnable resources

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:05 AM PST

    For every 10 minutes.....

Trees in the forest grows back. Infinite gold mine but got to reserch gold shaft upgrade(same for stone as well). Fishes in pond gets reproduced and deers patches get reproduced.

The building can be built only within your walls(like arena). There should be a limiter for construction of each building like barracks, stables and archery ranges Can be constructed 4 times and castles 3 times.

    Would you guys try it.

    Best times to play?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:42 AM PST

Some days it seems like I get 4 games right in a row of well balanced, well participating players. Other days, like this morning:

2 games where players left early for no discernable reason

1 game where players experimented with a new strategy which failed miserable then quit out early.

2 games that froze on load up requiring a quit out

It feels like mornings where you get this kind of inconsistency? Or is it just a random deal?

Game freezes midgame and then fast forwards. Note: i don't have any malwarebyte installed on my pc

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:28 AM PST

Hi so I only player multiplayer on my pc whose specs are as follows: Intel core 2 quad, 6 gb ram and nvidia gt1030.

My game runs fine untill around late feudal or castle age when it suddenly freezes it takes few minutes for it to restores by fast forwarding to current time. I have found previous posts saying that u gotta disable malwarebyte but i dont have it installed.

I have also tried turning off windows defender as i suspected it could be a problem as i have seen windows antimalware service executable running in the background on task manager.

    Any suggestions please?

    Excluding civs for random

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:26 AM PST

I recently started playing again after 6 months of abstinence and decided to only play random civ. Some civs are more and some are less sucsessfull but what kills me all the time is getting chinese. Not only is start very hard for me so the 2 vill lead turns more into a 0.5 vill lead. Also my scouting always suffers because i have to find all my sheep and feel the need to push in some deer. And i always get lamed if i get chinese like people coming forward with scout and try to lame my boar.

Anyway. Would't it be good if we got an option to customize the random option? Would people use it? What do you guys think about that idea?

    Toxic/bm players top pick civ

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:52 AM PST

I don't know how to put it, but when I play against a certain civ, I'd find myself preparing for a troll, toxic player, or simply bm. And sometimes, they turn out to be just that. Is it just me? Which one do you think is their top pic?

Note: not saying everyone plays this or that civ is toxic, and people are generally nice at my elo, let alone it's aoe2 we're talking about. But I feel like there are something about some civs that just attract toxic people.
