Change the number below population to show all economic units

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:41 PM PST

    Hi,
Currently in the top menu, I can see villagers/units per resource as well as my total number of villagers and finally total population.

Is there a way (options or mods), to change the villager count display to total economic units instead?

As an example: if I have 10 units on food, gold, stone and wood (for food I have fishing ships, and for gold I have trade carts), and say I have 50 halbs, my total population is 90. I will see 10 below each of my resources. However, below the two people icon I will see 20 (since I have 20 villagers, and fishing ships and trade carts don't count). Is there a way for me to change this to count fishing ships and trade carts/cogs, and display the economic units?

    Scenario Editor

    Hello all,

I am trying to use the scenario editor to add bonus damage against infantry to a unit.

    https://preview.redd.it/z18yg74c5yj81.png?width=710&format=png&auto=webp&s=6cac73da39028d22f3ba7b8f87bfddb8427c8a77

This is the trigger I am using, which works fine for adding bonus damage to Infantry for a hand-cannon, but for the archer it doesn't have any effect. The archer is effected by Attack Type 3 for pierce damage.
So I assume that there needs to be a bonus damage there already before applying a new bonus damage. Is there a workaround or something I am missing?

Can we have an option to remove chat filter and enable Copy and Paste from AoE chat and Click Links from chat (like in LoL)? We aren't 12-year-olds, and if so, you can enable chat filter

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 12:56 PM PST

Basically title. I don't get it why Microsoft is so hardened about internet hostility. Sure censor the most swears like fu** or sh** or a** or a lot of other major stuff. But stop having such restricted chat filters, I can't even say "Nice Dock" without getting '*'-ed out. At least at an option for it, it would also increase performance because less words need to be checked.

Furthermore, I want to be able to share some links with some friends that I don't want to add manually. Just plaster a warning (with a checkbox "Don't warn me again") saying that you are now led to outside websites and a disclaimer that MS is not responsible for any harm.

I don't get why such a new game still has these medieval (i mean it would fit the theme) internet precautions as if my 78-old granny sits in front of the monitor.

Is there some sort of automatic preference to match people for EW rather than RM?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:30 AM PST

So the past few days, I've started to queue up for both RM and EW, in 1v1s and 2v2s. Enabling both options and just playing what I get. I thought, from all stats that the EW queue was pretty dead compared to the RM queue so I did not expect much from it. Yet from my past 9 games, there was only one which was played on RM. Is it possible the system preferentially matches you for EW, or do there just happen to be more players around my rating in EW than in RM?

Admittedly, for the team games I was unranked so that would not suprise me, for the 1v1s I'm around 1100 EW vs 1500 RM

Spectating players slightly better than you

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 09:48 AM PST

As title says, watching slightly better players play will definitely improve your gameplay than watching a 2k4.

I was watching one guy continuously, who was 1700- 1800. I noticed how he plays, what strategy goes. ( Some games were wholesome as he and his opponent were discussing about their baby crying 11)

The main thing that I noticed is GATHER POINTS and making FARMS in feudal age. This was regularly his habit, in all games he did that properly.

I was very lazy almost always and put 20 vills on gold because I never changed my gather point.

I noticed this and started making FARMS and gather points a habit. I really improved 100 points.

Randomly, I matched against him. I was very happy and I told I learn from your games, he said "are you improving, then good". And finally, I beat him to get to 1700. My highest rating ever. I was very happy after that.

Tl dr : Spectate slightly higher players to learn from your mistakes, it helps you a lot.

Looking for advice on improving my gameplay. Low eAPM legend trying to move up the ladder

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 10:02 PM PST

    Hello People of Reddit,

Last month I started a controversy in this sub about the importance of eAPM and it blew up in another post. Just a disclaimer that it's an amazing metric that I couldn't improve. Instead looking to improve my game inspite of my low eAPM

I am looking to break the 1200 Elo ceiling which seems impossible to break considering that I have just 18-20eAPM. Funny part is I tried an APM destok app that shows about an average 120 APM during the game play. I guess I am not playing the game efficiently since the eAPM is so low.

Coming to my progress, after taking advice from this sub I started trying out Archer civs like Ethiopians and Britons and was winning from 1075-1150 Elo. I could mass archers/xbow mix in skirms, focus micro . I still find it hard to impossible to split or save my in archers from mangos. Last weekend my Archer game play was so bad I fell into losimg streak and Elo dropped back to 1050. Considering this I wanted to switch back to a cav civ expecting Franks

Started playing Huns and am loving it. Sc into it and ca are amazing. Late game is hard but most of my games didn't go late game. I ended up winning 6 out of my last 8 games. The main factor is that I don't have to micro with full on focus like archers.

I would be grateful if can pick apart the following Game and provide your feedback. Taking strategic fights gave me chance to win against my opponent in who has 3times my eAPM. Not sure if u can get such wins after 1200 Elo.

Are you curious to know how defensive buildings fare against Elite Huskarls?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 05:27 AM PST

Are you curious to know how defensive buildings fare against Elite Huskarls?

Hi all! I'd like to share with you a short story before I show you results. About a couple of weeks ago I won Saladin 6 co-op Campaign. I went for Paladins against Richard the Lionheart. You know that there are a few Keeps on elevations protecting his base. I was amazed at the huge amount of damage my Palas received from garrisoned Towers and I clicked on them to see if they had been edited for the Scenario. When I saw "8+9 attack", I realized the 2nd and commonly unnoticed effect of Yeomen (Towers +2 attack), with FU upgraded, fully vill garrisoned and with elevation advantage Keeps meant a huge damage output against my 7 pierce armor Paladins. I decided to try the performance of 5 FU Towers (250 wood + 625 stone) vs a Castle for many civs, looking at those civs with bonuses towards these buildings. And I tried them against a "Goth Huskarl spam". 40 Elite Huskarls seemed a good number (2080 Food 1040 Gold).

First of all, I want to say that this thread is very simplified. Of course, the Goth player, if he sees that there's a good static defense, he will either pass by or choose another point with no defense. The Goth spam will comprise Halbs against mounted units, Champions if their enemy switched to FU Champions, Hand Cannoneers against Jaguars/Samurai/TKs/Serjeants, BBC to snipe massed Onagers and BBC/Trebs to destroy buildings from far away, for example. But there's a chance (especially at lower levels) that he will send non-stop Huskarls, confiding that the enemy (for example a Briton, Vietnamese or Mayan, who should end it before Goths boom) will have nothing but a couple of Castles and useless Archers to deal with them. If the Goth player thinks like this, he will be mostly right, as we can see on the next table, where it shows how Attack move 40 Huskarls decimate a Castle with very few losses:

    https://preview.redd.it/jcghw7c58sj81.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=c290a1126e59fc35243a2007547def07a23e0d68

A fully upgraded Castle can only deal 18% damage to Huskarls before being destroyed. We can see that the BYZ Castle makes up for its lack of armor with more HP to perform the same as a FU Castle. UTs that improve them (Crenellations/Stronghold) are useless in this case.

Castles are usually placed on top of hills to gain a strategic site, increase damage output and reduce damage dealt to them. We can see, for a FU Castle, that Elevation has a very minor effect. Garrisoning units that increase the number of arrows improves much more than elevation, but it will come at a high price of losing even more resources than the killed Goth units.

So, would it be better to spend approx 650 Stone on 5 Towers instead? I've run that test with many civs, so that we see the important effect of 3 common techs (Keep upgrade, Bracer and Arrowslits) and some UTs. Here's the Table:

    https://preview.redd.it/r4lgkdm98sj81.png?width=539&format=png&auto=webp&s=35fdd33e856b798f8102622a1fcfd4907a911fad

We can see that generally Towers perform worse than Castles if they lack any of the aforementioned Techs (Keep upgrade, Bracer and Arrowslits). Even multiple arrow firing Donjons (4 instead of 5 due to resource cost) performed badly. But, at best there's not a great improvement for Towers above a Castle. You could make a point for waiting for Huskarls on a hill with Great Wall Keeps and a shower of Chukonu arrows, but I'm not sure if that would last for too long, especially with Chukonu taking 23 damage from each Huskarl hit.

In conclusion, Civs should defend a Goth flood mainly with units' power and not with buildings' power. But I want to analyze 2 Civs that could become the exception to this rule. Japanese Yasama Towers are like Castles when taking map control. A huge damage output thanks to their multiple arrows leave Huskarl army at half of its numbers. If we include Samurai or Champions, the result is a clear advantage for Japanese over Goths.

    Could Britons resist that army?

There's always been a meme about a young girl crying while running away from a Orangutan. The girl represents Britons or Mayans and the Orangutan represents Goths hitting Imperial Age. The Table states that 5 Yeomen Keeps' performance is way above the average Keeps (2nd only to Japanese). I did the very same tweaks I tried with the Castle test, and results are shown on next Table:

    https://preview.redd.it/q9rfgagd8sj81.png?width=413&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8e5bcdc746e2370d590eb6a41ef7e7c2d587d28

When the damage is higher, any improvement on the performance (cliff/elevation) snowballs. Elevation with Castles had a minor effect, but now it increases by a 30% both for Japanese and Briton Keeps. If you fully garrison the Keeps with vills, you get one more arrow, with full power, and only a quarter of the Huskarls would survive. If you garrison them with 25 Arbs (it wouldn't be strange for Britons to have >25 Arbs on the field by the time Goths get to Imperial), actually Huskarls lose the battle, and that without counting on the elevation effect. Arbs increase to 3 arrows, which deal 7 damage to each Huskarl (10 arrows to kill), and Huskarls also lose a bit of time killing Arbs that ungarrison from damaged Keeps. Longbows' +1 attack over Arbs means that Keeps fire 4 arrows each, and, if we get to the best case Scenario, you could even keep your 5 Keeps alive! This would certainly be surprising for a the Goth player!

Looking at the matchup insights, a stand like this would give time to Britons to tech into and amass Champions (the only "fine" answer for Britons to the Goth flood), and establishing a defense point like that may force Goths to go for Siege and Champions (But careful, Champions would receive a ton of damage from these Keeps). The only chance for Britons is to manage to raid the Goth eco faster than his own eco gets decimated by Goths. This proposed "5 Keep Scenario with garrisoned units on an elevation" is way above "situational" but I thought it'd be fun to share with you, as an example of a mythbuster on the Britons vs Goths matchup. Don't take this thread as "this guy is telling us that Britons counter Goths in Imperial Age".

I hope you enjoyed the read, and have a nice day!

Countering massive armies of the same unit in multiplayer

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:33 PM PST

I'm a multiplayer noob who just started playing online 1v1 matches. I keep getting absolutely creamed, mostly by people who send a huge amount of mounted units or archers my way.

Counters go out the window, because the armies are so large I can't keep up with unit production. Sometimes they come at me before I've even located the enemy via scouting. One player dropped four stables near my base before I'd even located him and kept churning out knights until he had like 30 of them chasing me around the map.

How do they do it? I can sometimes fight back for awhile but eventually run out of resources, whereas they never seem to lack gold, food, wood, etc.

What could I do better? The only thing I can think of to improve is to manage my vills better by not letting my TC idle or moving them from resource to resource. My opponents often have enough units to divide them on the map to cut me off from my wood or gold sources.

Tech upgrades that AoE2 is currently missing:

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:47 AM PST

Law Enforcement: your military units attack your idle vills.

Homeopathy: healing units by garrisoning slows down by 75%.

Home Insurance: if you lose houses to enemy military, you get gold.

    Bureaucracy: buildings build 75% slower.

Draft Resistance: every other queued military unit turns out a vill.

Veganism: vills can no longer hunt, collect meat or fish, get -10 health points but +1 attack.

Joe Rogan: your monks convert your own units to enemy units.

Obviously these are just jokes, hope stuff like this hasn't been posted too often so it wasn't super boring. I also thought of a tech where all your vills turn into Petards but I'm scared the name for the tech would be tos. Aight, one love, peace out!

    Great Stirrup Controversy

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 08:12 AM PST

AOE makes me curious about history. Reading about cavalry charges I came across the "Great Stirrup Controversy" and in the criticism it had a different take on infantry vs cavalry:

Military historian Stephen Morillo, of Wabash College, offered a different explanation for the rise of cavalry in Medieval warfare: that of a lack of centralized government. Morillo contends that cavalry-dependent militaries are common in societies that do not have strong central governments, and cites Medieval Japan and China as analogous examples to 8th century Europe. A central government, he explains, is crucial to the development of a highly trained infantry, but cavalry can be maintained, however loosely, by an already horse-owning noble class. He writes: "Rural warrior elites were in fact a common feature of many traditional civilizations. Sons of such classes were raised to the military lifestyle, trained in small groups built from the social connections among the class, and exercised military force in the interest of maintaining their own position in the hierarchy of power." Furthermore, Morillo examines cases of Frankish warriors fighting on foot—and defeating mounted knights in the process. Even White quoted Brunner as admitting that a good infantry could break a cavalry charge if its soldiers held their ranks. Morillo used the example of the familia regis, an elite Anglo-Norman infantry unit, as further evidence that a strong central government was the key to developing a strong infantry. Therefore, Morillo considers feudalism a political construct rather than a military one.

Also cataphract is Greek for "completely encased" and refers to the rider and horse both being armored :)

    Tech Concept - Salvage

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:37 PM PST

    Cost: 450 food, 250 wood

Effect: Returns 50% resources when a building is destroyed by an enemy. (Note: you will also get the resources back if you delete it yourself).

    Available in: Castle Age

    Strategy:

Once we reach Imperial Age and got all Blacksmith and University upgrades, there won't be any more purpose for said buildings, so we can delete them and get the wood back, which in turn can be used to train more units.

As for situations with stone defenses. A wrongly-placed castle that needs to be deleted, or a castle crumbled by enemies means the loss of precious stone (gold also affected, because the price for each 100 stone in the market increases after purchase). But with this tech, it will help one secure the stone needed to rebuild their defenses. The stone treasury will not be disrupted if one's defenses is breached.
