2 years ago, I started to compile a list of the most entertaining aoe2 games I've seen for a discord I had with friends. Unexpected comebacks, crazy strats, incredible perf from a player with bad settings... they are all in there

Now this discord is almost dead so I thought I'd share this list more widely, in case people are interested.

    Here's the full list:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/746893643 Lyx vs Hoang, BO3 (first of the video) KOTD3, RO16

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk6YUGFRMwI&t=15690s MBL vs Capoch, wololo 2, first leg (last game absolutely epic, but the entire BO5 is great)

My wishful AoE2 roadmap for next years

My wishful AoE2 roadmap for next years

Hi all! This week has been my first Cake Day. When I entered Reddit (I only visit this subreddit and r/AskHistorians for obvious reasons), my main goals were three:

    - Having access to the community for help and doubts concerning the game

    - Helping with the best of my efforts and intentions, especially new players seeking for advice (community needs new players to keep itself healthy)

    - Presenting my civ concept series. As a History fan, sharing with you a thorough work (even I didn't know some of the mechanics would be a little OP) was an ambition, and I will always defend that both players and Devs releasing new content are needed for the game to continue alive.

So, for the Cake Day I wanted to gift myself a dream. I'd like to share it with you. This thread contains future DLC and new civ wishful thoughts, so this is a warning for those who reject all type of new civs. I have many times imagined how Devs' awesome work during all these years (and all people who are not Devs but played an important role on keeping this game alive) could be finalized. I have sketched what the AoE2 roadmap could be in the following years, and decided that all relevant civs in AoE2 timeline should be included. Let me show you how I would do it, by presenting my 5 DLC roadmap:

    https://preview.redd.it/ur043w1metx81.png?width=738&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c821ceb626d130fe604a555b7ab33ee53b85176

DLC 1: Merchants of Africa. The title doesn't seem very warlike, but for example Sundjata Campaign showed us how important it was to keep trade within a land to assure loyalties from your allies. Next stop should be Africa, which I feel a bit underrepresented. Not without reason, since the reliable historical sources are limited (we even cannot be sure of the accuracy of dates and facts that surrounded Yodit's life). That's the biggest problem I found when deciding which African civs could suit this DLC: There's a very limited information regarding Yoruba (Oyo Empire, whose zenith came later than the Aoe2 timeline), Kingdom of Zimbabwe, Ghana Empire or Kingdom of Kongo (the most infamous battles happened in 1622/3). "Bantu" is an umbrella that doesn't cover a certain civ, and the Swahili coast powers were founded by Persians and had more mercantile ambitions than expansionism. So, returning to the title of the DLC, new civs would include arguably the best merchants from Africa, of course excluding Saracens and Berbers from this top: the Kanembu and the Somalis. For the former, we'd need to look at as many bibliography sources as we could. The Kanembu (Kanem-Bornu Empire) would be a bridge civ between Ethiopians, Malians and Berbers. The Campaign Hero would be Idris Alooma, who protected his land so that trade could be safe, and it could be a really unique Campaign, establishing Trade routes and defending from raids with limited resources (this land was scarce). The Somalis have much more documented sources, with Ifat, Adal and Ajuran Sultanates being different powers of the horn of Africa, with an ever-lasting war against their Abyssinian (Ethiopian) neighbors. For the Campaign, the hero proposed would be Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, who fought a war in which, apart from Ethiopians, Ottomans and Portuguese played an important role. This DLC would also feat a third Campaign, from one of the existing civs without a proper Campaign. Due to geographical reasons, Turks would get it, and my choice would be Mehmed II the Conqueror. We all deserve to see how Constantinople fell.

DLC 2: Old New World. Not North America, whose people weren't advanced enough for a civ, even compared to Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. Keeping in mind my aim to improve existing monotone Campaigns and giving one to all civs, we would need to delve into the depths of half-mythical, half-historical legends and records that would surround the new 3 Campaigns I propose for this DLC. Both new civs would get Eagles, of course, but my take on them is that they shouldn't be as oppressive as Mayans and Aztecs are today in 1v1 (maybe a bit more mid-late game oriented). I propose Chimú as the Incas' foes in Pachacuti + their own Campaign with Naucepinco (one of the main expanders of the Chimor Empire) as a Hero. The same goes for Tarascans (which, although not historically accurate, can represent Tlaxcala in Montezuma Campaign) and a Campaign featuring "The last Cazonci", who warred against many Aztec and other surrounding lands (we can include a couple of Mayans for variety) before falling to the Spanish. Obviously, the third Campaign would be for the Mayans, featuring the best documented and maybe giving a leeway to imagination to depict the formation, expansion and fall of the K'iche' Kingdom of Q'umarkaj.

DLC 3: Imperial China. This is my take on how to address the only civ that imo could be split without anyone from China raising an eyebrow. If Indians (whose people I feel are now delighted with Dynasties of India) needed to be split to give love and relevance to a big and important historical area, by not splitting Chinese we are losing the chance for a great variety of scenarios and the opportunity to learn a ton about China's History. I'm going to avoid two words for this DLC: Tibet and Uyghur, ok? So this is how I'd make it:

Current Chinese would be renamed to Tangut, with Emperor Taizong of Tang being the theme for their Campaign. We'd include the Khitan for the Liao dynasty that ruled over the North of China, With Abaoji, the founder of the Empire, being the Hero for the Campaign. Jurchens would be the third civ, with a Campaign about Jin Emperors. Last, but not least, the Han would represent both Song and Ming dynasties, and this time, they would get good access to gunpowder, unlike the other 3 civs. Zhu Di and Zheng He, who were Emperor and fleet Admiral respectively, would make an awesome Campaign. Want to make them unique? Let's give them the Fire Lancer instead of the Archer line as a regional unit. This will make Chinese civs unique and I hope for Chinese people being proud of their History when playing this DLC.

DLC 4: Restorers of Asia. Not a catchy name, but if I tell you that David the Builder and Trailok (who brought many reforms that have lasted until today in Thailand) could be the Campaigns for the new "forgotten" Asian civs, Georgians and Thai, it'd make much more sense. I feel, looking at a ton of sources, that Armenia was too much occupied by larger Empires during the Aoe2 timeline to get a civ. Since we need to get one Campaign for each of the civs, 3 new more should be added: Khosrow I (Persians), who invaded the Northeast of the Byzantine Empire among many other conquests, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Japanese), who unified most of Japan and sailed to the mainland (Chinese civs and Koreans as enemies) and the Wang Dynasty of Goryeo (Koreans), who had Jurchens and the Liao dynasty (Khitan) as enemies trying to conquer their borders.

DLC 5: End of an Age. This would be the last DLC, and we'd return to Europe for a couple of "forgotten" and relevant civs. First, we'd introduce the Vlachs and use them for Vlad Dracula Campaign. Then, the Swiss would be included, with a Campaign about the rise of the Swiss Confederation and use of Reisläufer as mercenaries. Last (and I feel that, if Huns and Goths are here, they should get their place), Vandals and Gaiseric's migration, conquests, establishment of the Kingdom of Vandals and Alans and later water conquests of Sicily and sack of Rome should be included. Of course, we need to include Campaigns for the missing civs: Harald Haardrada (Vikings), whose Campaign could include like 14 civs at least, until Stamford Bridge; The Rurikids (Slavs), among whom Sviatoslav I of Kiev stood out as a mighty strategist and conqueror; Nagy Lajos (Magyars), one of the biggest Kings of Hungary, with different types of scenarios, since he also conquered part of the Italian Peninsula (Kingdom of Naples). Finally, we would come back to Celts (who deserve a proper Campaign) with Robert the Bruce.

And so the circle would be closed and the end of the saga would be achieved.

What do you think about it? Is this a good-looking roadmap for the future of AoE2? Let me read your comments! Have a nice weekend!

Balance idea for Burmese: Free Siege Engineers

    Posted: 06 May 2022 05:08 AM PDT

Unfortunately, Burmese are still an underwhelming civ which has a hard time against archer civs and especially the Arb + Halb combo.

Burmese do have bottom tier skirmishers due to their lack of leather archer armor. In castle age Burmese should try to counter range units with mangonels. They have the same range as the crossbowman with full upgrades. So everything is fine here.

It gets tricky in early imperial age: The arbalest is now outranging the mangonel. To match the range of the arbalest, the Burmese player has to research Onager or Siege Engineers. Both options are expensive and not something you get immediately after hitting imp.

What if Burmese get Free Siege Engineers as a civ bonus? Burmese would be competitive in that crucial early imp time window against archer civs.

New Advanced Query Feature for AoEPulse.com

    Posted: 05 May 2022 11:10 PM PDT

    https://www.aoepulse.com/advanced

Have you ever wondered how Briton Scouts perform against Bulgarians? Wonder no longer! Arbitrary matchup support is now available through the Advanced tab of the AoEPulse dashboard!

Spoiler, they are about as bad as you would expect: https://www.aoepulse.com/advanced?id=62a8e227-6d36-486e-bc28-c6f8f4a123b6

Moreover, you can now add your own aoe2.net profile id to see how you perform in these arbitrary matchups. Vinchester, for example, premill drushes over 70% of his games! https://www.aoepulse.com/advanced?id=fa1a0b2d-f0cb-42c2-b131-53d2e1b0589f

This has been a many month process and I am so excited to finally have it available for the public. I can't wait to see what kind of insights you all will get from this new data vector!

    Instant resign against smurfs??

When playing team games when I face against smurfs, is it ok to instant resign? I dont want to feed the smurfs? I know we have to ask the team mates and such. But I dont like playing and giving them satisfaction. There is no learning or enjoyment in these games and dont want to waste my time.

BTW I check aoe2.net when i click upto fuedal (especially if chinese names)

At this point get rid of account sharing to somehow contain smurfing

    Posted: 06 May 2022 05:10 AM PDT

I am around 1600 and it is really becoming frustrating. Every second or third game atleast, I encounter smurfs with minimal games played, an insane win rate and some losses to stay in that range. It really destroys the fun and purpose of a ranked ladder. Since this is a problem across all elos, pls for the love of god, do something against this. I am really tired of it now.

    Finally won in ranked 1v1

    Posted: 05 May 2022 07:33 PM PDT

After starting out 0-4 in 1v1 I thought I would never win.. I took a break from ranked and after a few days of playing the Sundjata campaign I said screw it, I'll try to play with the Malians. Well today I got my first win on Hill Fort playing against the Incas. I was able to imp faster and treb his castles. Time to go get win #2 :D

Hooray, I finally found a way to memorize the optimal farm-setup

    Posted: 05 May 2022 11:35 AM PDT

Hooray, I finally found a way to memorize the optimal farm-setup

This post will probably look very dumb for whoever knows that by heart anyway, but I figure that I can't be the only idiot who struggles to figure that out in the heat of the moment.

    So, that's the optimal farm-setup:

    https://preview.redd.it/6g75j1ik9px81.png?width=1260&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c5e910452d5e75475b6c19ab5ce381f1a2a60fb

In the game I never exactly know how to set it up and just spammed the farm randomly where's space.

Easy way to remember it: Always start at the corners of the TC into the same direction.

    https://preview.redd.it/6bf583m3bpx81.png?width=466&format=png&auto=webp&s=591ce5cea9624e9c3d3ccd13dfa5e27cf04f7d65

So, either from each corner clockwise

    https://preview.redd.it/65guffbkapx81.png?width=895&format=png&auto=webp&s=0efd377cecb9b676b81312cd6acc52bb1e436b11

    Or from each corner counter-clockwise:

    https://preview.redd.it/7o1arcpmapx81.png?width=853&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9c99a6f6921c40498f17a74ccc225429afffee8

And then it becomes intuitive by just filling in the gaps/continue the lines in the same direction:

    https://preview.redd.it/72lczsmnbpx81.png?width=1201&format=png&auto=webp&s=619aa99d636dafc1414b1e6c25e2cbcf51cc2c32

Congratulations, your farming efficiency just went up like 2% or so, I don't know, anyway, the farms are going to look gorgeous

I don't know silence anymore, only aoe2 melee clang. Does anyone else share my plight or know if this will ever go away

Hot Take: Cuman Mercenaries should buff Kipchaks and Cav archers instead of being a one(ish) time bonus

    Posted: 05 May 2022 03:00 PM PDT

Even with the change that Cuman Mercenaries allows the player and their teammates to create 5 free Elite Kipchaks from all of their castles (including any castles created after researching the tech) The tech just feels sup par, and remains kind of gimmiky. Kipchaks in imp are still pretty bad, having really low HP and not great over DPS. And in team games 99% of the time your ally isnt even going to make them, or they are but not have upgrades for them since they are rushing for cav armor/melee attack.

Instead, make cuman cav archers usable while maintaining their identity of not having bracer. Change Cuman Mercenaries to give +4 attack to Kipchaks/cav archers. They still don't get bracer, kipchaks are still very fragile, but now they pack a real punch and Cumans finally have a reason to create CA with their steppe husbandry UT.

No Wonder You Won (Rajendra Mission4) has been the toughest campaign achievement in a while [spoiler]

    Posted: 06 May 2022 04:56 AM PDT

It took me several hours to nail this achievement down on Hard difficulty and it was really close. Abusing the healing mechanic with the worn down trebs was the only reason this is even possible I think. I don't see how you can destroy the castles in time otherwise. I think having to deal with the naval side of things (you need the supply ships) makes this so frustrating, as well as Cyan retaking Kalinga and attacking you from behind if you don't instantly retake it.

    civ bans

    Posted: 06 May 2022 02:40 AM PDT

i just wanna start a little discussion, mabe this has been proposed before:
i have a friend ho plays LoL and he told me you can ban champions and maps there.
so i was thinking about this concept aplied to aoe 2 (civ bans in ranked).
+ it would actually sometimes be nice to ban spanish on arena (or whatever you want)
    - you might not always be able to play the civ you want (especially new players would pbl hate it)

i didnt make up my mind yet whether i would like it or not and if mabe even more than one ban would be best
seeing all the ppl here complainting about not being able to play the map they want, i guess most players would hate this idea.

what are your thoughts on that?
