Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 5: Bulgarians vs Indians

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:22 PM PDT

Match ups like these are why I do these discussions... I don't think I have ever seen or played it so far 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Italians vs Mongols, and next up is the Bulgarians vs Indians!

    Bulgarians: Infantry and Cavalry civilization

    • Swordsmen-line upgrades free
    • Town Centers cost -50% stone
    • Can build Krepost
    • TEAM BONUS: Blacksmiths work +50% faster
    • Unique Unit: Konnik (Heavy cavalry that becomes an infantry when unhorsed)
    • Unique Building: Krepost (Mini-castle that can only train Konniks)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Stirrups (Cavalry attack +25% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Bagains (Swordsmen gain +5 armor)

    Indians: Camel and Gunpowder civilization

    • Villagers cost -10/15/20/25% per Age
    • Fishermen work +10% faster
    • Camels +0/+1 armor
    • TEAM BONUS: Camel units +5 attack vs buildings
    • Unique Unit: Elephant Archer (Super tanky, slow, expensive cav archer)
    • Unique Unit: Imperial Camel (Additional Imperial Age upgrade to camel-line)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Sultans (All gold income +10% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Shatagni (Hand Cannoneers +1 range)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • As I said earlier, I have literally never encountered this match up before that I can remember... so theorycrafting time! For 1v1 land maps, Indians save a bit of food in Dark Age, but it should definitely be Bulgarians who set the pace of the game with some M@A play. Midgame, Indian eco will be stronger, and camels will do well vs knights, okay vs konniks, and poorly vs swordsmen/pikemen. Cav archers would also be an option here for Indians. Late game, Konniks are pretty darn strong if you can get the upgrades, and mega-armor 2HS are great vs the low attack camel units. I would give Bulgarians the edge here in late game and early game, but Indians having a sizeable window in midgame where they will have a stronger eco and better ranged options. Thoughts?
    • In team games, both of these civs jump out as excellent pockets. Indians have always been top 3 pocket imo, as they serve an excellent anti-meta role with camels wrecking havoc on pure cavalry civs like Huns or Franks. They also have an excellent eco to boot. Bulgarians, however, have the awesome power of the Konnik in late game, alongside excellent infantry and siege. Which is overall stronger as pocket in your opinion?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Lithuanians vs Malay. Hope to see you there! :)

(Shitpost) Why haven't the [insert obscure civilization ] been introduced? They have a rich history, and could work as a [insert land/water] type civ. There's also a lot of potential regarding their unique [insert obscure technology that would be impossible for the devs to implement]. Thoughts?

Announcing a New Platform for AoE2 Tournaments: Quiver.gg

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:08 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/Fq9amw8.png

Over the past few years I've been working with robo and various other people on a myriad of tournament admin tasks. There are lots of repetitive tasks that we've been wanting to automate, such as pulling player ratings from ladders, generating brackets and updating them based on game results, creating scheduling threads, integrating tournament rules with civ drafts and map packs, etc. We've now started working with Chrazini and the CaptureAge Team on replacing robo with an actual robot. We'll be launching a new website at quiver.gg where we'll be rolling out these tools for the community to use.

    Features include:

    • Linking player profiles with ladders to ease tournament signups.
    • Templates for common sets of rules, and translations of these templates in multiple languages.
    • Integration between brackets, Twitch bots, CaptureAge, and other tools.
    • Various anti-cheat measures.
    • And more.

We'll be rolling out these features in an alpha starting soon.

Matching with ex-cheaters since the latest patch

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:02 AM PDT

Hear me out. I have a suspicion that I have been matching with lots of people who are on their way back down the matchmaking later since the cheating/exploit has been fixed in last patch. Here's why:

I have pretty consistently been a 1300 ELO player, and have had difficulty getting past the point. Then last month I was getting super frustrated because I just couldn't seem to win games and went down to ~1200 ELO.

However, since the last patch, I've been running in to players that I seem to be straight up murdering, AND STILL GETTING A TON OF POINTS FOR IT! I'm not almost to 1400, which has never happened to me, but I don't feel like I'm playing any different or gaining these points through exceptional performance.

The other thing is, a bunch of these players have made really weird, unsolicited excuses before the game even starts. Yesterday I played a guy that continuously complained about not having all of his starting sheep on Arena. He brought it up multiple times throughout the game, saying that it "just slowed it down so much." But when I looked at the rec, he clearly found all of his sheep immediately, he just played like a low-ELO legend.

Basically, I think I've been matching with a lot of people who's ELO was inflated by cheating during the last patch? Any thoughts? Anyone with similar experiences?

Best AOE-like game in a modern warfare setting?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:23 AM PDT

I'm interested in learning about games that are similar to AOE in their RTS mechanics, but with 20th century-ish setting (or even futuristic settings).

Command and Conquer is the only one I'm aware of

    Definitive AOE2 serious FPS issues.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 04:03 AM PDT

I have a 9900k. Rtx 2070 super and when i am playing the game my fps constantly drops to 29. And jumps to 90 for a second and drops down to 29. I would say it def averages at 29.

This happens even if i lower the resolution by half this happens even if i choose low quality setting. Nothing changes whether i have v sync on or off.

Meanwhile modern warfare warzone gets a steady 70 fps average on a 3840x1600. Ultrawide.

Disappointing i am having theses issues

Which civ(s) do you think is(are) best suited for the Scouts into Archers build?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:40 AM PDT

So far I think Magyars, and Ethiopians are the two I have enjoyed using. But I'm fairly new and curious what other think. Also, I'm unsure how much to tech into scouts if my typical plan is an archer switch in late fedual. Just bloodlines? Armor too? Curious your thoughts, and I know often... it depends!

Anyone still gets that fuzzy nostalgic feeling when playing AoE 2?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I sank so much time during my teen years in age of Empires 2, one of the few vived memories that I have is opening my dad's PC with bulky white CTR monitor, firing up the 56k dialup modem connection, launching age of Empires 2 and spending hours upon hours playing.

I am so glad they made the DE version, it has all the modern features of an RTS game but with the same soul of the original game (with some bugs here and there).

And the graphics, it's really weird but the DE enhanced graphics feel almost identical as the ones in my memory, but when I see the comparasion videos between original and DE, the difference is night and day. I guess the mind fills some gaps and makes good memories appear pretty.

Anyway, just wanted to share this nostalgia overload. Glhf.

    Build Order Website

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:33 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I could swear there was a post here a week or so ago showing off a build order website they'd made.
It was nice with icons and auto-scrolling and so on.

I've searched quite a bit now but can't for the life of me find it - did I imagine the whole thing?

    Incorrect Replay Columns

    Hi everyone,

Having an issue when I replay games and look at the overview tab. It appears that the columns are off by one. Anyone know of a fix? Thanks!

Jumping to army with control group hotkey

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:36 AM PDT

    Hey all,

So I usually hop around the screen with hotkeys, but when I attempt to center the screen on my main army it often messes up. This is due to me adding newly produced units to the group, which aren't present at the main army's location yet. When I then doubletap the control group the screen centers in the middle of all those units, which is useless, as half the time this is on an empty space in the middle of the map. Is there a way to jump to the bulk of the control group, ignoring those 2 outlying units?

    Thanks in advance!

What about an historically accurate representation of Italian City States inside AoE2?

What about an historically accurate representation of Italian City States inside AoE2?

    https://preview.redd.it/id00jwwxpp251.jpg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a9c8769e89bd8a27a927141b242cadc273f3e61

So... I'm Italian and there is something that always annoys me about this wonderful game... the "Italians" civilization. Now, it kind of annoys me because Italian Regions have their respective histories and traditions... and we had so much epic rivalries between city states. It is obvious that you cannot represent every single Italian City State as a different civ (and I think that the developers did a good job creating the Italians)... however I was wondering about a different scenario in which they would actually represent the strongest city states as their own civs, such as Venice, Genoa, Milan, Pisa, The Papal State, Florence, Naples ecc.

And I would say that this speculation would be really interesting, indeed. Because, you could really take the peculiar traits of every city state and take them to the extremes! For example, the Papal State would have Broken AF Monks and Strong Halbs or Venice would have very strong Galleons and very strong infantry (to reflect their reliance onto mercenaries) or, again, Milan would have incredibly strong paladins and siege weapons... you would have crazy strong and specialized civilations to play with.

What do you think about this? I think that anyone with a bit of experience onto Europa Universalis IV would be pretty happy to join this conversation

Positive experience with the new patch

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:16 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

Since the April patch there has been a huge increase in negative posts about the game experience.

However, for me, the game is more stable than ever, I have played 20+ multiplayer games and only once did someone disconnect right at the beginning. I spend about 2 mins in the queue until we have a game.

Because the last patch was pretty rough for me (9 drops in 25 games, so I stopped playing ranked) I can relate with you guys, but the issues I had seem to be fixed.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say: trust in the Devs that a fix is on the way! It sucks to wait, but I actually played through all the campaigns and toyed with the AI quite a bit. There are a lot of community games (arranged on discord) which are an option too...

Lastly, does anyone else notice better game experience like I do?
