Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 14 Week 15: Chinese vs Saracens

    Posted: 25 May 2022 12:07 AM PDT

The classic Battle of Talas match up!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Burmese vs Lithuanians, and next up is the Chinese vs Saracens!

    Chinese: (Economy and) Archer civilization

    • Start with +3 Villagers, but -50w, -200f
    • Techs cost -10/15/20% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Town Centers support 10 population; gain +5 LoS
    • Demolition Ships gain +50% hp
    • TEAM BONUS: Farms provide +10% food
    • Unique Unit: Chu Ko Nu (Powerful foot archer with rapid-fire attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Great Wall (Walls and Towers gain +30% hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Rocketry (Cho Ko Nu gain +2 attack; Scorpions gain +4 attack)

    Saracens: Camel and Naval civilization

    • Market trade only costs 5%; Markets cost -100w
    • Transport Ships have +5 garrison capacity; 2x hp
    • Galleys attack +25% faster
    • Camel units gain +10 hp
    • TEAM BONUS: Foot archers gain +2 attack vs buildings
    • Unique Unit: Mameluke (Powerful camel unit with short ranged melee attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Zealotry (Camel units gain +20 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Counterweights (Trebuchets and Mangonels gain +15% attack)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, some classic civs here! For 1v1 Arabia and similar maps, Chinese are still considered among the very best out there due to their strong economy and flexible tech tree. However, I would say they have slightly fallen out of favor in recent days due to the very aggressive nature of the meta at high levels. By comparison, Saracens are more popular than they used to be, as their siege archers and powerful Market really lend themselves to the sorts of deadly timings that we see win games so often. Both civs are also late game powerhouses, for what it's worth. Which civ do you favor on open maps?
    • On closed maps, things can get a bit awkward for both civs. Chinese can chill in the early game and get their economy going, but then become quite sad the second they run into powerful siege units. Still, if they can avoid those match ups or hit their opponent before they get their siege going, the Chinese can remain quite deadly. Also, they are easily the best civ on Regicide Fortress. Saracens, meanwhile, don't really have as much to offer when it comes to booming, but they are going to shine with their powerful Imperial Age. Top tier siege, camels, archery range, and monks are all viable on any sort of closed map, so if Saracens can get there, they can totally thrive. Which civ do you favor on your more closed maps?
    • In team games, both civs can function in both positions, although I would say that in general they prefer the flank. In that case, Chinese can leverage their strong economy and archer options, whereas Saracens can hit their timings with their Market, as well as provide a really scary team bonus on many maps. In the late game, Chinese have their Chu Ko Nu, Siege Rams, and BBTs, whereas Saracens can switch into Arbs, HCA, or Camels. Which civ do you think is more useful in a team game setting?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Byzantines vs Teutons. Hope to see you there! :)

I won my first online match!

    Posted: 24 May 2022 06:44 PM PDT

I've always been super intimidated by the online play. I've only managed gold medal on early economy challenge once lol. That should give you an idea of my skill level.

Had a very long first online match on arena as japanese. Soon as I had enough for a second castle I dropped it outside his base along with 3 towers. Immediately researched yasama for the extra arrows. Those alone took out at least 150 of his units which mostly consisted of archers. I kept rushing his inner gate area with samurais. Never did make it to imperial because of this but it was worth it. I think I squeezed him out of all of his resources since he was in imperial. Didn't have enough of an army to fight back and I was down to my last 6 samurais and he resigned.

That was very intense and I love it.

Edit: Jesus I killed 500 units and only lost 220.

    Micro lumber camp villagers

    Posted: 25 May 2022 05:56 AM PDT

I have noticed 2 issues when micro lumber camp vills.

    1. If I allocate vill to chop wood while building a lumber camp. It returns to tc even lumber camp is built.

    2. If I have 4 vills on wood, 2 on each side of the lumber camp. One vill suddenly chose to cut a tree from other side. Leaving one vill on one side. So enemy scout can snipe that vill.

Any tips to avoid above two ?

Login page to the official forums stays stuck

After having found a bug, I wanted to connect to my AoE account to report it, to which I connect myself from time to time. But I can't connect. It happened in the past that I had to refresh several times the page to get through, but today it's a definitive no. Restarted the pc, used different internet browsers and even a VPN connection, but it just won't do. At best I get a "HTTP error 500", but usually I simply get a white screen.

This page just refuses to load: https://auth.ageofempires.com/. The same applies btw if one chooses to connect through one's steam account: https://auth.ageofempires.com/home/loginsteam.

I own the game on Steam but always connect through my Microsoft account. I can connect no problem on microsoft.com, it's ageofempires.com (or forums.ageofempires.com) that's the problem.

    Anyone got any ideas? :-)

    Co-Op campaign Tariq 2 - help

    Posted: 25 May 2022 03:32 AM PDT

Hey guys, a friend if mine and i have recently tried some of the coop campaigns and were absolutely wrecked by that mission on hard difficulty. The enemies seem to attack from all directions right after we take Toledo and we have neither the defensive structures now the army to build any real economy to defend ourselves, also the enemies begin constructing their wonders after about 15 minutes or so. In the single player version the enemies start attacking way later and the first wonder construction doesn't begin until the 40 min mark

Is it supposed to get that way? And has anyone of you tips on how to beat this in coop ? Thanks in advanced

Introducing the AoE2 Tournament Points Rankings (ATP Rankings)

    Posted: 24 May 2022 03:41 AM PDT

Introducing the AoE2 Tournament Points Rankings (ATP Rankings)

I'd like to present a finalized version of the ATP (AoE2 Tournament Points) rankings, which are based on the ATP system used in professional Tennis and modified to try to suit Age of Empires 2.

Before I begin, huge thanks to u/Tarsiz for initially creating the spreadsheet and kickstarting the idea, Degaussed, TheCapybara, King_Boo, and the rest of the GB Discord for providing feedback and suggestions as new features were implemented, and /u/adicogames for allowing me to shamelessly steal borrow ideas from the AoE IV ATR sheet.

Simply put, the ATP rankings are intended to be a way to track player tournament performance and provide an alternate method for seeding them in tournaments as accurately as possible, taking into account a wide range of criteria.

Players earn points based on the end position in a tournament (more points for first, less for 33-64th) weighted by the 'modifier' of the tournament which is impacted by the size of the prize pool, number of players, number of invited players, and other restrictions.

Currently, players do not earn any points if they do not complete all of their matches, that is, they withdraw or are otherwise disqualified from an event regardless of where they actually ended up, and any matches/games that were played are not counted towards their win/loss results.

The Team game sheet has a small delay in adding features compared to the 1v1 Rankings, as I want to make sure any changes are functional and completed before spending the time duplicating them onto another sheet. There is also significantly less data (54 completed 1v1 tournaments vs 14 completed tgs) so any inference from the rankings is dubious at best. I mostly created it to see what the numbers would look like. Players only earn points if they actually participate and play in games, being on the roster is not enough.

If anyone has any feedback, ideas, or suggestions please do share them.

    Features Include:

    • Almost all S, A, & B-Tier 1v1 tournaments since the release of DE are included. Over 200 players & 1300 tournament results included and counting!
    • Tournaments are only counted for 1 year to represent their current form, but older data is still available.
    • Match and Game win rate for most events within that time period. (some qualifiers are yet to be included)
    • Various versions of the rankings (Regular, S-Tier only, all historical events, all historical S-Tier only, Country ranks)
    • Difference/Change in ranking in the last 30 days to show how recent results have affected players. (recently added)
    • Player search to see all of their results in the recorded tournaments. (You need to make a copy of the sheet to use this)
    • Visual Representation of top 20 players over time. Updated at the end of each month.

Ideas that are being thought about:

    • Adding a decay algorithm.
      • Instead of points being worth 100% all year round, then 0 after the year is up, they would decrease slowly, picking up speed as the year progresses, to better represent their current form.
    • Limited Rankings
      • Only include a limited number of results from A & B-Tiers to minimize players gaining lots of points in numerous smaller events vs weaker competition instead of performing against their peers.
      • The first attempt didn't have the desired effect and was almost identical to regular rankings, which may indicate that the idea isn't useful, or the implementation needs drastic improvement.
    • Increasing the prize split bonuses (and negative) and adding more breakpoints.
      • This is to make the largest tournaments even more impactful and reduce the impact of smaller events, possibly in combination with the above Limited Rankings.
      • Maybe something like $100k+ = 1.2, $75k+ = 1.0, $50k+ = 0.8, $25k+ = 0.6, $15k+ = 0.4, $5k+ = 0.2 $5k- = -0.1, $1k- = -0.4, $500- = -0.8

Top 20 Rankings (MbL has fallen out after not playing in a tournament for the last 5 months)

Top 20 Historical Rankings (Since the start of DE)

    Top 20 Country Ranks

Tips for a noob against AI team games?

    Posted: 25 May 2022 05:58 AM PDT

Me and my friends like to play against AI on weekends, generally 3v3 or 4v4. Due to jobs and being in different time zones, this is about the only time we get to play. We have gotten a bit better and can beat hard 3v4 or 3v5 on most maps but we still struggle against hardest. Even with scout and archer rush on one guy, we get smoked by the pocket going imp and crushing us. We know some build orders, standard counters and the usual stuff, but are there any general tips that will be helpful? Most of the standard tips are for 1v1s so looking for team game tips.

Player counts and Elo over time

    Posted: 24 May 2022 12:29 PM PDT

Player counts and Elo over time

I was curious to see how player counts and Elo ratings have been changing over time so I put the following plots together, figured that these might be interesting to some people here so thought I would share:

Rolling Average of the Total Number of Games Played per day

    https://preview.redd.it/sv65q0p96h191.png?width=1276&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d777aeeab5a38743258a5f22a6a01b6d50038d9

Rolling Average of the Total Number of Unique Active Players per day

    https://preview.redd.it/5nr2xk2c6h191.png?width=1256&format=png&auto=webp&s=f29fc458532c53a4429d27c68fa0ffd4d481c2a7

Rolling Average of the Mean Elo of Unique Active Players per day

    https://preview.redd.it/2mb7xi066h191.png?width=1256&format=png&auto=webp&s=d482a47f8f77b0d9c5975efe489b0c8c5fc7d1d4

Some things that stand out to me are:

    • Team Elo is slowly correcting itself back towards 1k. This might explain a few comments I've seen recently from players saying they are finding team games harder recently. Alternatively you could argue its a sign of higher Elo players leaving team games whilst new players join though I feel the former reasoning is more likely.
    • RM Solo games are played way more often and have far more unique players per day than RM Team games, I always thought it was the other way around. Read the graph wrong -.-
    • To no ones surprise EWs really is quite dead. Which is a massive shame to me as I genuinely prefer it as a game mode
    • Average Elo of the RM solo players is >1k I'm still scratching my head as to why this is the case as I would have thought the active player base would always tend towards 1k. This may well be a bug in my code or just a lack of understanding on my behalf of how the Elo system works.
    • There appears to be a slight downward trend to the player base (albeit the most recent patch seems to have picked things back up) but overall I would argue the player base is in a pretty healthy position

If there's interest in this sort of content I would be happy to add it as a feature to my stats site. But either way interested to see what other people make of this.

EDIT: Just realised I didn't use a consistent group colours between plots... my bad.

State of online team custom games

    Posted: 25 May 2022 03:41 AM PDT

I am a noob player, in online play i have no clue what i am doing, but single player got kinda stale for me so I decided to try it out. Over this past few weeks I tried joining Online Noob team games, as I find it more enjoyble than 1v1. EVERY F-ING TIME THE GAME WAS ONE SIDED. Most of the time there are like 2-3 better players on joining the lobby boosting their fragiles egos and trashing us noobs.

Most of the time they are enemy so all I see are scout rushes, or fast castle into knight rush and meanwhile I get the short end of the stick. My teammates have half the enemy score, or lower, including me, bad eco, no military and meanwhile enemy is booming on 3 TCs while producing army and steamrolling us. Like is it fun for you?

The few games that the script gets flipped and I get the good players the game is boring and finishes fast because my ally rushes some noobie player, he resigns, followed by a chain reaction and the games is over while I am still in early castle age doing nothing but pumping wills...
