Who remembers playing the classic AoK balance?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 09:45 PM PDT

Teutons had their 6+5 range TCs.

Franks had their 192 hp paladins without enemy bloodlines, halberdiers, or monks with theocracy to deal with.

Chinese had their +3 villagers with only the -150 food.

Goths were garbage since you couldn't train huskarls at barracks, they didn't spawn instantaneously, and they even had worse stats. Also no +10 population.

Archery civs didn't have thumb ring, cav archers didn't have Parthian tactics. Hand cannons took forever to get because they required an extra research in addition to chemistry.

Villagers wouldn't automatically gather after building a camp. Scorpions benefited from blacksmith research. BBT smashed rams because they did melee damage. Trade was painfully slow without caravan.

Screen resolution was 1024x768 and unless you had a top end PC you played with a population limit well under 200.

    Good old childhood memories.

An idea to buff the Vietnamese: -75 Wood cost for building Archery Ranges

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 12:06 AM PDT

The Vietnamese have long had a poor winrate in both 1v1 and team games, mainly due to their lack of economic bonuses, predictable builds, and their bonuses not lending themselves well to early-game. The extra HP on their archers, for instance, doesn't help them against skirmishers, which will still take them out easily.

One idea I had to buff the Vietnamese would be to give them a discount on building Archery Ranges. -75 Wood per Archery Range would be a nice boost for their early-game archers and their late-game archers by letting them save a little Wood. It wouldn't be nearly as strong as, say, the Huns' "no houses" bonus or the Teuton's cheaper Farms, but it'd still be undoubtedly helpful without putting them over the top. It'd still be fairly predictable that the Vietnamese would be going for archers, but they would at least be able to save some wood when going for them.

Going to a LAN in a bit, trying to remember a map we used to play!

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 05:21 AM PDT

There was a custom scenario we played back in the day and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.

It was set up like a castle blood map, 8 players each with their own fortified spawn area and a big battle area between everyone.

The difference was that instead of multiple castles you had a relic/wonder/castle/tower or something like that and behind your spawn area there was an island with a unit on it. You moved that unit onto a flag and it began spawning that unit in your fortified spawn area very quickly.

After X amount of kills you would be given an additional slightly stronger unit on your island and now you could move the old unit off the flag and put the new one on the flag and it would start spawning.

After a while you would have many different units to choose to spawn to help counter what ever was coming at you.

Any idea if this still exists? I spent so much time in this game mode that I'm sad I cannot remember what it was called.

Comprehensive trash war strategy guide for Malay (only semi-joking)

    Opposing civ Strategy
Aztecs 2H spam; if buying Jags: buy Scorps
Berbers 2H spam (no effective counters)
Britons 2H spam (no effective counters)
    Burmese 2H+halb (no effective counters)
Byzantines 2H+halb; if buying cataphracts: curl up and die
Celts 2H spam (no effective counters)
Chinese 2H spam (no effective counters)
Ethiopians 2H spam (no effective counters)
Franks 2H spam; if buying Axe: buy BC or onager
Goths 2H spam (no effective counters)
Huns 2H spam (no effective counters)
Incas 2H spam; if buying slingers: add skirms (no effective counters)
    Indians 2H+halb (no effective counters)
Italians 2H spam (no effective counters)
Japanese 2H spam (no effective counters)
Khmer 2H spam (no effective counters)
Koreans 2H spam (no effective counters)

Malay queue up ~2 billion units and go for dinner
Malians if buying Gbetos: buy onagers/scorps
Mayans 2H spam (no effective counters)
    Mongols 2H+halb (no effective counters)
    Persians 2H+halb (no effective counters)
Portuguese if buying orjan guns: buy BC or onager. If feitoria: focus on destroying feitoria quickly
    Saracens 2H+halb (no effective counters)
Slavs 2H+2H+2H+2H+2H+2H+2H+2H+2H+2H; if Druzhina: add more 2H
    Spanish 2H+halb (no effective counters)
Teutons if buying TK: buy BC or onager
Turks laugh at enemy attempts to buy gold units... Oh and 2H spam
    Vietnamese 2H+halb (no effective counters)
    Vikings 2H (no effective counters)

Edit: Malay 2H is on equal footing with most civ's hussar so it kills literally every other thrash unit at a cheaper price. Thought it over a bit and it seems to me that there's only a handful of civs that stand a chance in the very late game. If anyone got other strategies that work against Malay infantry spam I'd love to hear them (besides the obligatory: don't let it get to trash wars).

Suggestions to change dark age start without changing the strats on opening like MAA -> Tower, MAA -> Archers, Scouts and so on.

Scouts don’t try to attack villager I clicked

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm sure this has been asked before, but I don't know how to find it. When I'm scout rushing is when I most notice this problem. I'll be running around his eco with my scouts, find a weak vill, right click that weak vill, and for some reason my scouts will often try to go for other nearby villagers instead while ignoring the vill I clicked. I'll keep on reclicking the vill I wanted them to attack but they still choose other ones 🤷‍♂️👎

Is it because of the poor pathing? Is it because of the stance I have them set on? I just want my military to attack the unit I asked them to attack, but it doesn't always work out. Thanks in advance!

    steal opponent's resources?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 08:37 PM PDT

What do you think about a tech or unit that would allow you to steal the opponent's harvested resources somehow? It could be unique to one civ or to all civs. I don't know what it would look like or how it would be done but I think it would make for an interesting strategy. I know you can take someone's potential resources from their "land" but this would immediately impact what they could buy. Both of these strategies (take land and harvested resources) were used in the Middle Ages so I don't see why it wouldn't fit in.
