How does elo work in Aoe2?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2019 07:15 AM PDT

I am just really confused the ranking system works in this game.

Also, how does one get their ranking or elo number?

On Black Forest, how many villagers to send out to wall up in the start of the game?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2019 12:37 AM PDT

I always send two out and my scout. But I feel like that makes me fall behind on food. What is the right move?

How many people have been whined at for walling their base in a 1v1 arabia? Happened twice in the last 5 games for me.

UserPatch 1.5 new flags for custom mod installers

    Posted: 14 Sep 2019 07:25 PM PDT

Hi, Pulkit from the ToME mod here. I have just updated the mod to use UP 1.5 from the previous 1.4. We use the silent command line installer to create a custom exe for the ToME mod. Previously in 1.4, we could use the feature flags with SetupAoC.exe -i -g:tome -f:11111001000000000000 and these binary 0/1 flags would line up perfectly with the list of features in the UP gui installer.

Now, UP 1.5 does not have any clear alignment between the flags listed in the UP website and what's visible in the gui installer. The example given on the UP website is -f:22211000110000. What is the meaning of 2 here? And with the UP installer being split into pages, how do the feature flags line up in this string?

Hoping to reach out to the authors of the UP installer or anyone with experience here.

When do you research eco upgrades?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2019 08:51 PM PDT

I've got my Dark Age build order down pretty well, but one thing I still sometimes struggle with is knowing when research the economic upgrades, especially Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart.

Do you upgrade as they become available in each Age, or is it better to advance first and upgrade later? Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart are especially tricky because you can't research them while advancing (well, you can with Hand Cart if you build another TC, but still).

I can usually come into the Feudal Age with a good amount of resources, but I often wonder if I should just try to skip right to the Castle Age or upgrade and create some villagers to boost my economy while I'm advancing. Thoughts?

Which Pro-Player has the Best Archer Micro?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2019 01:03 PM PDT

I know the popular opinion was Liereyy for a long time. However since he hasn't been playing AoE2 outside of tournaments recently, do you still consider him the best?

Hera is usually known for his scout play, but I've seen him do well with his archer micro in the last 2 weeks. Here are the clips I'm thinking of: https://youtu.be/IRQBAUXt3c4?t=107 https://youtu.be/5m7v0-Jpg5M?t=65 I'd definitely put TheViper and MBL up there as well. Thoughts?

"Conquest" should be renamed to "Standard"

If Conquest is the standard victory condition, why is the name not "Standard". On the other hand "Standard" should be renamed to "Miscellaneous".

Do they Huns get a proper tent style?

...or am I being deceived? If you look at these screenshots it looks like the huns have a tent style which makes more sense for them. https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/06/09/e3-2019-age-of-empires-ii-definitive-edition-launching-fall-2019-beta-coming-soon/

Split the predators in two categories, have one of each per map at least

    Posted: 14 Sep 2019 09:09 AM PDT

As you know, wild land carnivores are just alternate sprites and names of the original, the Wolf. This is regardless of some of them being noticeably larger. I thought about splitting them in two:

    Weak Predators

These are what carnivores are now in the game. Smaller, more common animals hunted mostly because they are a threat to flocks and people working on the country. Killing them has no value bar removing the annoyance. 25 HP, no food, they attack human units on sight.

    1. Crocodile: Present in America, Africa, India, and SE Asia maps, but only near water
    2. Komodo Dragon: SE Asia
    3. Cougar: America
    4. Wolf: Elsewhere, including Desert and Africa maps.

    Strong Predators

These are larger, more powerful, less common animals. They also attack units on sight but have about 50 HP. Villagers can kill and skin them for 100 Gold, but the gold spoils over time if it is not taken immediately. They represent animals actively hunted for sport, prestige, furs, or to have in games and menageries. Early on you will kill them to protect your Villagers but by the late game you will be tracking them as a wealth resource, competing with your enemies for it, and giving your Villagers something else to do besides cutting trees and tilling farms.

    1. Jaguar: America
    2. Lion: Africa, Desert, India
    3. Tiger: India, SE Asia
    4. Bear: Elsewhere

Hunting Dogs may be brought back as a Castle Age tech rather than a Dark Age tech, but used to help with that later game hunting instead of early on.
