    Best counter to archers+skirmishers?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:36 AM PDT

What's the best way to counter a group of archers+skirmishers? Do I mix in my own skirms with archers or add scouts? Or maybe I should try to defend with archers and go upto castle faster than him and add knights?

Having 0 luck with text modding

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 07:05 PM PDT

So, I made a data mod, and as I learned from this subreddit, I have created a separate mod specifically for the text. The problem however, is that even though AGE loads it up just fine and recognizes the text for the custom tech I've added to the game mode, but the game itself just says "Turn Statistics Off", this doesn't seem to matter what number I set it to, and I'm not sure why it's doing that.

I'm using icon 56, but I don't believe that's the issue, if it is though, how would I make a custom icon? I have the lang file saves in ansi, and everything is formatted correctly, so there's no reason it shouldn't be working.

Edit: nope, definitely not the icon

Edit 2: I can get it working just fine if I modify the main key value strings file directly, but obviously that's not ideal

Edit 3: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1898734385 I gave up, the solution is jank but it works. If anyone would like to come in and explain to me how in the HELL a text mod is supposed to work, I'll gladly add you as a contributor, but I give up for right now.

Edit 4: for better clarification, everything works, the description, the name, everything, the problem is I have to have the user modify the main language file in order for the game to actually pick up my modified descriptors, which isn't ideal, as the "correct" way of doing it refuses to work.

As a team game player, I detest 1v1s.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 01:09 PM PDT

And yes, naturally, I'm writing this post after losing at a 1v1.

But I'm not bad at Aoe... I'm certainly not good, but I can pull my weight in 15XX-16XX elo HD team games, and comparable elos on Voobly. I can castle in 15-18 minutes consistently. I understand my civs, build orders, counters, and hidden bonuses. I'm an occasional team MVP, and will usually wrap up black forest games with 120-180 vils. I can even pull off passable castle age aggression, with some encouragement. Win-or-lose, there's generally some fun to be had, provided your teammates are at least talking to you.

But ... No matter how many times I try to enjoy 1v1s, I just find them either boring or incredibly frustrating. It almost always devolves into one player attacking a totally-unprepared opponent. Perhaps it's just a defect of the elo system at the low-mid range, which results in players being routinely-mismatched. Oftentimes, whoever gets struck first simply can't recover in these lower-tier 1v1s. (And yes, it's usually me. :D )

My strong suspicion, however, is that I can't find satisfying 1v1s because there's a multi-hundred point gap in my skill level as a team player in semi-closed and closed maps (1650-1550), versus my abilities in 1v1s (1350-1150). I find myself hovering with a 1450 elo which, in 1v1s, either leads to me being stomped by 14XX 1v1 players, or utterly-annihilating some poor newbie on their way down. I don't learn anything, I don't enjoy it. It sucks.

Should I just make a second account if I want to play 1v1s at my proper skill level, and actually have some fun?

What are your thoughts on criticizing a player while in game?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:50 AM PDT

I've found myself complaining to my team mates a lot lately and always feel somewhat bad because the ELO range I play in is weird in that there's many noobs but also many players that have a firm grasp on the game.

I don't mind poor decision making, wrong units, etc, but when a team-mate decides to full wall while allowing other team mates to have to defend against 2 I can't help but talk a little bit of crap.

For those interested I've attached a game recording where I (Player 1: Blue) complain to my team mate (Player 2: Teal). If you view the recording from my perspective you can see me saying "That's what happens when you make no army" early castle age when Arambai hit his base, and "You're useless" before I resign.

    Wishlist for AOE2:DE

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 12:06 PM PDT

Very excited for AOE 2 Definitive Edition to release next month.

The thing I'm hoping for the most is remastered map-making tools. In the current Age of Empires 2 (2013), it's a hassle to make cool scenarios. I hope in the Definitive Edition, there's more triggers and conditions and effects.

Biggest one I hope to see is the ability to rename units that are spawned in after the map starts. Another is making enemy AI stand completely still until they see an enemy. Or to have modifiers for units (right now you can modify unit health and armor and damage, but how great would it be if you could also modify attack speed, visibility range, etc.?). It would also be cool to have proximity-triggers. Imagine following a friendly AI king down a road, only to encounter a large set-piece battle in front of you! And when you're on the road, and you fall too far behind, the king will stop and wait for you to catch up.

Imagine being able to edit the range, and the attack speed! Some ideas include making Chu-Ko-Nu have a lot of attack speed and very little range, and you could pretend he was a "machine gunner". Imagine all the fun things that could entail. Watch map-makers come out with WWII or Vietnam themed maps!

Or having an effect that forces you to learn a technology! I know something like this is already in the game, but it doesn't always work out well, with intended effects. Like say you are playing on a role-play map, and you encounter a gold vein. Once you hit the trigger of approaching the ore, the game forces you to "research" Paper Money, so you effectively get gold for finding a vein. So many ideas!

These things are hard or next to impossible to do on the current map editor. Being an avid map maker, I'd love to get more tools, more than just new trees and new tents.

Overall, very excited! Can't contain myself.

How do you make a regicide game in scenario builder?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 01:03 PM PDT

I can't figure out how to make the user lose when the king dies. I've googled but haven't found the right answer. Maybe I just suck at googling lol
