    How to fix Cumans?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:52 AM PST

So at the moment the consensus is that the Cumans are the most OP civ ever. And it kinda boggles the mind how one civ ended up with all the OP units and bonuses in one? Yes the old saying goes that all new civs are OP at the beginning but that's clearly not true because so far the Bulgars, Tatars and Lithuanians are not OP...at least not enough to warrant a major outrcy.

So that begs the question, how did the Cumans end up with:

    1. the most OP UU? - this is helped by the faster movement speed bonus the Cumans have
    2. the most OP new unit (Steppe Lancer) - this is helped by the faster movement speed bonus the Cumans have
    3. TC in feudal for the most OP feudal eco bonus - the early boom is impossible to catch up to.

This civ can't lose. I don't want to give the devs too hard a time, I think they did a fantastic job with DE but I just want to know what was the thinking behind this? The logic. People are comparing the Kipchak to the Cobra car. Stupid fast with instant shooting. Massed with good micro, these units are unstoppable. Same with Steppe Lancer, these things tear through their natural counters including halbs and camels. That's not how the game works, you don't create cheat units that have no counters. That's not the principles that the game is based on.

And the problem isn't necessarily these issues by themselves but that ONE CIV has ALL OF THEM. If at least they moved some of these things around. Give Kipchak or the cav speed bonus to Tatars. Or the TC thing to Lithuanians. Why did one civ get all these incredibly powerful bonuses?

This leads us to my proposed solutions: I think that the speed bonus needs to be removed from the Cumans. It's too much. Makes 2 already OP units even more OP. Takes them into cheating territory. Maybe consider giving it to Tatars which would synergize well with their hill bonus.

And then I'd increase the cost of the feudal TC to 200 stone. So that would force them to make 1 TC in feudal but then have to mine stone to go for that 3rd one in castle...anyway some kind of set back has to be implemented. I don't think the characteristic of the civ would change much but it would bring them down to normal levels.

    Thoughts?

It seems that the Tarkans have forgot to light their torches

Title says it all - altough I have to admit that I'm having a blast and so much fun playing the original campaigns. Finally, I managed to honor the might emperor - Barbarossa - by taking his pickled coffin to the Dome of Jerusalem. Time to move on to the next campaign (Attila)!

People who knight rush noobs in unranked.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:41 PM PST

Can we at least give them a chance, I am seeing this every game. I join these noob games with fresh players to protect them and sort of talk to them when things happen as they generally ask or mention it in chat.

Obviously some will think it is good dropping the newbies in at the deep end. But I don't want to turn newbies off the game and scare them off.

So come on, you aren't proving anything knight rushing someone who is playing their second ever match in a lobby called noobs. Stop massaging your ego and help the newbies so we can have some fresh blood and bigger community which can only help us in the long run.

Is it worth buying the remastered edition ?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:01 AM PST

I used to play the 1999 edition when I was younger and still play it from time to time but I have moved to more modern games , and I was thinking if it is worth buying the remastered one?

After I won, i realized why i had such a naval supremacy - the AI built so many dock that he couldn't get his ships out

A new player and a bit worried, what would you advise?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:31 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

as the headline states, I am new to AOE2. I know the game to an extend. I used to play as a kid and now I bought the definitive edition, going to conquer the campaigns I was too little to understand many years ago.

But despite the fact that I used to be quite a good SC and SC2 player, this game seems insane to me!
Outside PvP, the AI seems crazy (good). It does not waste/hoard resources pointlessly and mercilessly spams unit.
In a skirmish, I usually got into so many scenarios which were just spamming 20 barracks against AI 20 barracks..
I have just been playing a campaign with Joan of Arc and jesus christ.... maybe it is just the longbowmen? (Which are more than capable of kiting, seriously, 9 of these spread into all corners and kite the army).

In addition to that, it seems very frustrating that you have to break through the walls, but they are insanely durable. What is the fastest way to get them down? A ram? Super slow and always blocked. Or are catapults good for that? I know trebuchets are the shit, but it seems weird thinking that you need to get to T4 just to take out some enemy, that you can't rush.

I like the game, I have been watching some educational videos on civs and it is super cool how small differences are there, making the civs different, but it seems like a very hard game.

    So my points in mind.

    1) Is the game really that hard and every campaign scenario is grind?

    2) Isn't multiplayer the same 20 barrack spam madness?

    3) What would you recommend to somebody who has RTS experience, but finds AOE2 overwhelming for some reason? (Outside "git gud", I am already invested in that, just was curious about how people feel).

Anyone else prefer these 2019 E3-tease AOE2DE icons this way? They look much better and clearer. They look more professional in my opinion.

I hate it when I have to protect useless allies and enemies are infinite spawn

Is AoE2: DE worth buying if I pretty much plan to play Skirmish's against the AI only?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:31 AM PST

One of my favourite things to do when I was younger was play against the AI as a way to chill out in RTS games. I find online multiplayer to require too much concentration and also have a kid it's almost impossible for me at this stage of my life to play something for 30+ mins without pausing.

The campaign also doesn't interest me either, I've watched a few streams and youtube and every map in the campaign is basically the same stuff with minor variations I find it way too repetitive.

That leaves Skirmish against the AI. Would you say this game is worth it for that reason alone? Does the AI put up a good enough fight at higher difficulties and is there enough variation in game play to keep me entertained for a decent amount of time (not looking for anything crazy, the game is extremely well-priced anyway)?

    Thanks for any advice!

Can we talk about Cumans mission 2?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:21 AM PST

Okay, so I've been playing AoE2 since it was released. I can just about win all the campaigns + AoC on Hard, haven't played much of the Forgotten ones and beyond yet.

So I jump right into it, enjoy the Cumans intro mission and then... oh boy.

I build a couple of TCs and a castle, raid the Tatars, and the Mongols show up with an army the size of a planet and pancake me. Next game I go all in on skirmishers, but they never seem to run out of units.

Where and when should I build my TCs, and is a castle even worth it? Should I just kamikaze and kill the Tatars as soon as possible, maybe placing down some palisades and decoys to distract the Mongols, and then run?

What is you favorite campaign/historic battle?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:54 AM PST

I've always prefered playing single player random map. But now that I got the DE version, I decided to revisit some campaigns. I think the last time I played them was some 15 years ago or something. Anyway, yesterday I played the Battle of York historic battle where you play as the Vikings. I had a blast! I thought the map was very well designed and I enjoyed raiding village after village until I built the wonder.

Any other campaigns/historic battles you're fond of?

Do Age of Empires 2 Glitches Still Work in AoE II Definitive Edition?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:51 PM PST

    Let's talk about AoE2DE graphics

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:04 PM PST

Multiplayer lobbies, performance and game balance aside, I would like to discuss what bothers me most: the graphics.

Let me start by saying that I don't have any post-processing effects turned on and I haven't downloaded the UHD pack.

The graphics look very blurry and staring at this game for more than 15 minutes gives me severe eye-strain, something I never had with AoC. The new player colors don't help at all, with some colors being too vibrant (ie: Blue, Green).

Pine trees and some units also look like they've been badly cropped and pasted on the screen (weird lighting contrast) and have jarring outlines, but other tree varieties look fine. https://i.imgur.com/CcjfwjF.png

The cast shadows are too soft and add to the blurriness as well https://i.imgur.com/OfS6reV.jpg (og shadows for comparison https://i.imgur.com/xWSu51Q.jpg)

Unit details are hard to see, as a result multiple units on the screen can easily turn into a messy blob of colors and makes them harder to differentiate. No it doesn't have anything to do with nostalgia or "trained eye" for the old sprites https://i.imgur.com/YdAUxx9.jpg Too many times have I mistaken a scout for light cavalry and vice-versa.

On the topic of distinguishing units, sometimes texture and model alone aren't the only thing contributing to a unit's distinguishing feature. The idle animation of the elite skirmisher for example, looks identical to the pikeman. They could and should've just used the one from the base skirmisher that already has that "spear resting on the shoulder" pose to avoid further confusion. Skirmisher projectiles also look like rockets for some reason, now poofing into a dust ball instead of sticking on the ground. But I digress, it's not that big of a deal...

About the UI, everything looks pixelated, including the font. To mitigate this I've scaled it to the max (125%) but it's not enough to get rid of the aliasing completely. Even worse, when scaling the UI it becomes dysfunctional as you can't select units in groups from the bottom anymore, definitely a bug. The icons are also mismatched with the player color (It's always blue).

Buildings look impeccable and terrain textures also look nice.

Part of why I felt the need to make this post is because while patches with balance changes and/or performance fixes will come along eventually, i kinda feel like the devs don't want to touch the visual part of the game ever again. And it's really frustrating to give up playing this game and having to return it because the graphics are uncomfortable to look at, as i really do enjoy many of the things that the definitive edition brought (QoL features, new civs, enhanced editor...)

I wanna know if you agree or not, and if not, let us know your opinion.
