[story] Civil War in a 4v4

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:43 PM PST

This happened last night on DE online. It was a 4v4 black forest, and my team was given an AI player to even numbers. I was a flank so I was pretty busy and didn't notice much on my own team. "We" managed roll back two enemy players on my flank before one of them built a monument in the third enemy players base. I somehow ran out of gold and because I'm dumb I didn't check why, I just switched to trash and desperately tried to break through to the monument. I got angry that my team was too busy fighting on the other flank and not giving me any help for the last push, considering I was within about 15 tiles of the monument. We lost to wonder victory. I then checked the replay and oh boy, did I find out why.

One team member (Gray) decided our AI player was too strong, and walled him in to prevent a snowball (hence the lack of gold, trade carts blocked). My other team member (Teal) was annoyed by this and use catapults to free the AI. Gray then got catapults and started destroying our AI using attack ground. Teal used attack ground to destroy Gray's catapults. Gray then went full bore attack on teal and by game end was pouring catapults into Teals base. No fighting at all happened on the opposite flank to me. I had in fact been fighting all 4 of the enemy team on my flank, by myself. The lag and intensity of it just caused me to not even consider there were no allied units with me, or check on my team or our trade line.

    Such a bizarre match.

Pressuring Cumans | Is It Enough? (T90Official)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:01 PM PST

    Smoothness is OP

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:57 AM PST

I quickly came to the realization that some of the new units in the game feel way smoother than others in the game. Steppe Lancers being a prime example of how smooth and excellent they feel to use, you can run in, patrol, and just destroy an entire army in literal seconds because majority of my army is attacking. The fluid way that they approach and then attack without bumping into each other, freezing, and then getting confused on who to attack, is extremely strong in comparison to other units in the game.

I almost feel as if the previous units in the game just haven't been updated as far as pathing goes? In a Halb / Militia line war, you should be expecting 80% of your army to be freezing up and standing still, until your enemy actually gets close to them. It's like giving a cripple a pike and pointing to the enemy, they'll get there, just, you know, fucking slow and ineffective. (Sorry cripples, I'm sure you're nice people.)

I get the impression that, statistics don't matter as much as the smoothness and fluidity of movement that the unit has. While an extreme case of having an extreme advantage in a particular stat might exist; in a realistic scenario, even if I were down armor stats and Melee stats to a reasonable level, I would feel as if I could actually win most battles with this handicap. What are your thoughts on the matter, r/aoe2

PSA: If you resign in the first minute of a ranked game your ELO is unaffected.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:15 PM PST

Hera was the first person to come up with this but it should be broadcast as widely as possible. The reason that this is important is that if you are against Cumans, or to a lesser extent tatars, you should resign in that window. The Step Lancer is currently practically uncounterable and its not worth playing a game with such a disadvantage.

    Grouping Question

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:39 AM PST

In HD I was able to select multiple groups at the same time with the shift key. Now that seems to have been changed to appending, which I don't want to do. Is there a way in the base game to select multiple groups anymore? Is there a mod that allows for it?

    Another counter against Cumans found!

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:55 AM PST

This is the basic build order to follow:

    1. Make a lot of villagers, army not needed.
    2. Start gathering stone early.
    3. Research Fortified Wall.
    4. Spread your villagers out on the map.
    5. Wall them into small corners of forest, obstacles, etc. Make sure there is at least 1 tile between the wall and the villagers, because SL have 1 range.
    6. Stand up from the PC, go to the store and grab a beer.
    7. Profit.

I only ever played AOEII HD, and in DE I keep hearing about how Cumans are over powered. Wanted to try them out but I'm a noob and cant figure out which civ they are

The Bulgarians are NOT an Infantry Civilization

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:49 AM PST

Title. I feel like the developers labeling the Bulgarians as an Infantry Civilization is very misleading. When compared to other infantry civilizations, they are lacking. When you think of an infantry civilization, you think that they have a) above average infantry (average being a full infantry tech tree minus eagle warriors) and/or b) An infantry unique unit.

For example, the Slavs are classified as an "Infantry and Siege" Civilization. They have a full infantry tech tree and they have a powerful unique tech which makes their infantry, when massed, extremely effective in the imperial age. The Teutons are an "Infantry" Civilization because they have a full infantry tech tree and they have a unique unit that is arguably the best infantry, at least in melee combat, in the game.

The Bulgarians are classified as an "Infantry and Cavalry" Civilization. They have a full infantry tech tree minus champions, and they also get all of their militia line upgrades free. This means that they can quickly transition into men-at-arms as soon as they reach the Fuedal age for a early m@a rush. They also get Bagains, an imperial age tech which costs more than the champion upgrade and effectively replaces the +1 attack and +10 hp of the champion upgrade for +2 armor (as the champion also gains 1 armor in their upgrade). Bagains is more expensive than a champion upgrade, and is also arguably a worse upgrade. This means that you could argue that, at least in the late game, the Britons, a "Foot Archer" civilization, have better infantry than an "Infantry and Cavalry" Civilization.

Lets just role through some data quickly on how, for an infantry civilization, the Bulgarians infantry is inferior in most cases. The few cases where the Bulgarians two handed swordsman are better is against Halbadiers, Elite Eagle Warriors that are not Aztec and Hussars that are not Lithuanians with a +4 or higher relic bonus. Basically, if a melee unit has an attack of 15 or higher, there is no difference between the melee bulk of champions and 2h swordsman. So essentially, the Bulgarians are making their anti-trash unit better at being anti-trash but only if it's melee, at the cost of being weaker to ranged attack, due to lower hp, and lower attack. All of this, at a higher cost than the champion upgrade and replacing a unique tech that could be used in some other way. This all works together to make your militia-line in the Imperial Age less useful for anything that isn't trash killing.

This goes against the trend of other infantry civilizations, which make infantry a powerful option for late-game. See, Malian Gbeto, Goth infantry wave, faster attacking Japanese Infantry + Samurai, Teutonic Knights, Faster Celtic Infantry + Woad Raider, Slavic Druzhina Infantry, Aztec high attack infantry + Jaguar Warriors, Incan Kamayuks. All of these civilizations turn Infantry from what is basically a counter unit into powerful units that can hold their own against the cavalry and archers that usually dominate the Feudal, Castle and Imperial Age.

The militia line still get free upgrades, meaning you do save resources and time, also amplifying m@a rushes. Is this enough to make up for what is essentially having less flexible champions? IMO, no. Essentially less useful champions, which do technically cost less resources and time to upgrade if you factor in previous upgrades that you get for free, and standard Halbadiers. The Bulgarians Infantry do not stand out enough to justify being called an "Infantry" Civilization.

Recommendations? Why are you asking me? Honestly though, removing "Infantry" from "Infantry and Cavalry" would be the best choice. It misleads new players into thinking that the Bulgarian 2h swordsman are as good as Japanese faster attacking infantry or Slav Druhzina. The Bulgarian Konnik already beats Frankish Paladins and Slavic Boyars in 1v1, so their Cavalry is as good as it gets. All of this is just data though, and isn't always representative of actual game play. I just thought I would point out that Imperial Bulgarian Infantry is actually a lot worse than it looks, a nice change of pace from the usual "Cumans OP" post. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    Advice for newb

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:29 AM PST

My memory isn't great so memorizing the counters for every possible combination of units is difficult.

Last night I got destroyed despite having a better economy and 2k more points in Imp Age by someone with Britons spamming Elite Skirms, Crossbowmen and Longbowmen.

I tried champions but they got destroyed by the Longbowmen and the Crossbowmen wiped out my horses. He annihilated me with trebs.

Any good diagrams or something useful I can refer to to know how to counter?
