    Goths pop increase

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 08:21 AM PST

I read somewhere that the game was originally designed for 75 pop. Goth +10 pop bonus in imp translates to 13,3% max pop increase in that case. Would it be good idea to change this bonus to a pop-dependant bonus, say 10-15%? Would be cool to have +20 or +30 pop in a standard game, which would fit well with their infantry spam theme.

    Free advice for new(er) players

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 07:06 PM PST

I originally posted the below as a reply in another thread, but I thought I would make a new thread in the hope that this can help others struggling to improve their game.

Love the game, but tired of losing? I've been in your exact position before so I know the frustration of losing over and over. But what helped me progress to a new level of gameplay is really simple pretty straightforward.

(1.) Watch your replays. Figure out at least one thing you could have done better.

-- Could you improve scouting? (seeing they were on a resource you could have raided, knowing what units they were making so you could counter, etc)

-- Did you have idles for a long time?

-- Did you miss an important upgrade?

-- Once you identify an issue, make a cheat sheet for future games. I have one that just says, "Keep scouting. Identify bad resources and protect. Keep raiding."

    (2.) Unit selection, resources, etc.

-- Do a better balancing resources. Maybe you were floating 1500 wood while struggling for gold. Also, make a market early so you can "cheat" and sell extra resources and buy what you are lacking.

-- Wrong units. Most newer people will make whatever units they prefer, best for civ., regardless of opponents units then get rolled by counter. Better players scout their opponents then make counters. (EX: Notice your opponent getting cav upgrades or building stables, then make pikemen.)

-- Dont make enough villagers. Each game is different but in late castle you should have upwards of 90+ villagers and long games you should have 120+

(3.) Simcity then fight is not how to win longterm.

-- Many lower elo players will build their city, then make 50 units and go look for a fight.

-- Spending resources on a unit that just sits in your base until you mass 50 of them is a waste of resources. That's resources invested into something that is doing nothing in return.

-- Make 5 units and immediately attack. Look for incremental damage. 5 units on your opponents gold when he isnt prepared can throw them off their game, limit their ability to mass poweful gold units, prevent them from going up in Age, and potentially force them into making a mistake.

(4.) Too much dependance on gold units. I love paladins, too, but you cant make all Paladins and onagers and trebs.

-- Ideally, you want to have 1 gold unit that you put all your upgrades into and then a food/wood unit that counters what your opponent makes. Pike for cav, skirms for archers, etc.

-- Also, if you are in a position where you know the game is gonna go late game, protect your gold units and mass cheap counters in front. Focus on relics. Collect every one on the map/ attack his monasteries. Make more production buildings to try and out produce opponent.

(5.) Late(er) game villagers are practically free, but they may be the single most important unit.

-- Once you have your economy pumping, you likely have at least 40+ on farms, so 50 food is nothing. So dont be afraid to take an unsafe resource like a neutral gold. You may lose them all to a raid at some point but that's gold you've collected that your opponent can never take.

-- However, if you lose 10 villagers to a raid, remake 10 villagers ASAP. Many mid-level players dont replace lost villagers late game and so their opponent is taking a bigger and bigger lead with every raid.

-- Dont be afraid to throw wood/food units away for villagers. Dont be afraid to send 10 hussars into TC fire to snipe 5-10 villagers. Most people will forget/neglect to remake those lost villagers, giving you a nice economy lead.

    (6.) Finally.. RAID!

-- Too many lower elo games are treb wars in the middle with massed units. Both armies in the exact same spot fighting over a wasteland. Over. And over.

-- Obviously you need to defend the main push. But sending 10 hussars into his base or into his woodline, extra gold, etc. will get you into a much better position then throwing 10 more units to die in the main fight. Keep doing this. Over and over.

    **Arena specific advice:

25 villagers, castle asap, boom **while scouting. After that, it's all dependent on opponent.

By castle you should have entire map scouted. I'd recommend placing a scout on patrol on EACH opponent gate. This will spot villagers moving out to take another resource or build a forward castle.

Will also catch him moving out with attack units, giving you maximum time to produce counter units.

If other players have other advice or tips for specific maps/other game modes, please feel free to comment below and I will update this post.

    Additionally tips submitted by others:

-- Learn and practice a few build orders (submitted by u/apli_diud). Great tip and this helped me greatly. Having 2-3 solid BOs in your pocket will help take your game to the next level. Interactive BO Mod by Cicero is a great place to start.

Ram's cannot attack gates. Bug or Feature?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 05:23 AM PST

I purchased definitive edition a couple of days ago. The last time I played Age of Empires was probably around 10 years ago, so I don't remember how it originally was, but I noticed recently that Rams seem to not be able to attack gates.

First encountered this in the campaign, but also in ranked multiplayer. If i target a gate with rams they just stop, don't do anything. Is it supposed to be like this?

    NAC3 Stats: Civilization Picking

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 08:17 AM PST

I'm just leaving here a banal counter of occurrences for each civilization during Nili's Apartment Cup 3. This special ranking sees the Mayans on top, whilst many didn't manage to get any play at all. I gotta say the exceptionally high amount of mirror games - 27 out of 106 played maps - was quite disappointing. Overall, though, this event has still left on me a positive impression and I just can't wait for the next ones to follow.

    Mayans: 26 (12,3%) Aztecs: 23 (10,8%) Persians: 20 (9,4%) Chinese: 17 (8%) Mongols: 16 (7,5%) Italians: 15 (7,1%) Vikings: 14 (6,6%) Britons: 13 (6,1%) Huns: 10 (4,7%) Malians: 8 (3,8%) Cumans: 6 (2,8%) Japanese: 6 (2,8%) Byzantines: 5 (2,4%) Incas: 5 (2,4%) Celts: 4 (1,9%) Malay: 4 (1,9%) Saracens: 4 (1,9%) Slavs: 4 (1,9%) Bulgarians: 2 (0,9%) Koreans: 2 (0,9%) Lithuanians: 2 (0,9%) Spanish: 2 (0,9%) Burmese: 1 (0,5%) Ethiopians: 1 (0,5%) Turks: 1 (0,5%) Vietnamese: 1 (0,5%) Berbers: 0 (0%) Franks: 0 (0%) Goths: 0 (0%) Indians: 0 (0%) Khmer: 0 (0%) Magyars: 0 (0%) Portuguese: 0 (0%) Tatars: 0 (0%) Teutons: 0 (0%)

Question regarding last match of yesterday's NAC 3 finals (Spoilers)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 03:32 AM PST

There is a moment in the last map, that casters said "game is over already" in the very early game, when Hera scouts Viper's north base. A few seconds later, we could see Hera smiling and laughing and T90 saying "normally, players in this level would have already resigned" speaking of Hera. What happened? I didn't understand anything of why the game was already over when none of the players have tried almost anything. What was the hint that all 3 (t90, nili and Hera) saw to make such conclusion?

    New Meta After NAC3

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:56 PM PST

This is, (correct me if im wrong), the first big tournament with tourney-balanced DE... Viper won as usual yes, but for plebs like me its also about the changing civ meta. I didnt follow the group stage but watched from quarter finals onwards.

    The four new civs,

No real impact on meta, barely used in the finals and cumans were only used for a kingsnipe that wouldnt have worked.

    Saracens

Holy shit, they are new Franks (an old civ that suddenly git gudded) - even tho by now pros know what is coming, they still arent able to fully counter the market abuse archers, it is amazing what 25 less wood and +1 building per age can do.

Saracens are basically impossible to wall against and will snowball out of control with the godly micro pros got, this is the best fast imp arb civ in the whole game now.

    Franks

Melee units derp out now, so Franks no longer get first picked on their top maps like golden pit and gold rush. They are still strong but probably no longer #1 rated civ.

    Persians

While the trash bow adds a nice dimension it seems the only player able to make it work was viper, and arguably viper is so good he can make nearly anything work. Many players seem to get in a trap of researching paladin and then running out of gold and dying. Also, trash bows arent that game changing.

    Incas

Nothing has changed for incas whatsoever, but pros have invented a new way to play them, establishing a new inca meta. The only known counter to the "noboru rush" at present is to go incas yourself as Hera did to counter Viper.

    Usual suspects

Aztecs and huns are still as good as ever (on land open maps), italians are still top water civ, and chinese are still the most versatile civ. Mayans and britons are still around whenever you need that range, and vikings when you need that economy.

Japs still know how to dish the fish. Mongols are still fast.

    The elephant civs

Worse in the new meta i dont recall seeing elephants in any major game. Khmer and vietnamese are still horrible. Malay see some play but are average at best, burmese didnt seem to show up at all even tho i dont think they got nerfed.

    Spanish

Everyone has known about conqs for a long time so they seem goth-ic on the pro level: pros know and can counter them while noobs will still panic and lose all their vils to a few conqs. They are strong enough to be picked but not that strong to be reliable civwins.

    Slavs

After the farming nerfs slavs are no longer picked so they join teutons in Team "GoodEco ButNotMeta".

    Indians

    Where are the indians?

    African civs

Seem very lacklustre but at least got some play.

    Turks, Magyars, Byzantines, Celts

    Nothing new.

    Summary

The actual meta hasnt changed much, except for saracens, which go from S tier to S tier (shit to super). The new inca meta is interesting but is only used in one type of map (super-Arabia). Hybrid maps seem to more emphasized with new tournament formats which in turn gives the hybrid civs more chance to shine. Its no longer about "arabia dominance", but now about civs that can fight both land and water. It is harder than ever to civ draft because of the map variety.

Will there be any more balance patches regarding currennt underwhelming civs?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:09 AM PST

Feel free to correct me. Im by no means a professional, just wondering what community thinks.

I dont get why some civs even got buffed and some sit in a corner and wait for their time. There are a couple of them doesnt even makes sense. Now i get it not every civs have to be A tier, but cmon thats ridiculous.

There are some civs like this but im gonna go with obvious one; ( i dont even know what to say about vietnam lol)

Turks. No bonuses first two ages, its still decent but even when they reach to Imp Age, they require shit ton of gold and still isnt the best. A lot of other civs are still better for way less gold. The lack of trash is a problem but also some techs are excluded too.

    No Arb or pally

    No onager i dunno why

No siege engineers ( i mean you say BBC is good with +2 range, but they cant still snipe onagers in late)

They have also best BBT? but you know what is more limited than gold? Stone. The artillery already takes away 400 stones and you need to build some castles anyway, so thats another underwhelming option.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this isnt about some spesific civs but im tired of seeing trash units every phase of the game. Having counters and playing around them is good, otherwise some units would be unstoppable. But Halbs or E-Skirms feels like they should have been specific to some civs, not most of them should get it.

    Anyway my two cents.

Guide for upgrading unique units that dont fit into typical categories?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:52 PM PST

One thing I still struggle with is knowing which blacksmith upgrades affect unusual units that dont fall into the typical infantry, cav, archer categories.

And unless I'm missing something the tooltips/tech tree dont help.

Foe example: ballista elephants. Are they considered cav or archers? Or janissaries... are they archers or infantry?

The tooltips for units just state that you "can upgrade their defense and attack at the blacksmith."

Edit: Thanks to Vaxamillian for linking a chart by ZeroEmpires and this other chart, which uses the unit icons.
