Complete results of Farming Rates (and other experiments) for AoE2:DE - v.34793 Posted: 02 Feb 2020 08:50 PM PST Hi. I decided to take up Farming testing again after the wake of the new Khmer farm bonus. I'm not really in the best of mood right now, so I won't go into too much. All of this testing took roughly just over a week of dedicated testing and like my previous testing that I have submitted here on Reddit, I've attempted to be as thorough as possible and present this to hopefully be the definitive results for farming gather rates as in the current state of the game. Test 1 - Regular Farming Results Test 1 is basically the standard testing. The testing for the first 3 tests (No Upgrades, Wheelbarrow, Hand Cart & Heavy Plow) is done with a standard optimized 8 Farms around the Town Center, running for 10 Minutes, 12 times per Civ / Upgrade, omitting the best and worst result due the nature of RNG (Testing sometimes produces abnormal gather rates, so this minimizes this and gives a more ideal average.) The "2nd Layer", or Double Layer testing is done with 12 Villagers and Farms one "layer" away from the Town Center. Same deal, 10 Minutes, 12 Times omitting the best and worst result. All testing is done at 1.7x Speed, which is the most common competitive speed and in case there is significant differences in game speed.
Percentages:
If there is one general take in this for every civilization (except the Khmer), is that you should not Double Layer farms until you have Hand Cart. There is just so much efficiency being lost. Also Heavy Plow does have a slight effect due to the +1 carry capacity, which is why it's included in the testing with Hand Cart. Khmer's new farming bonus, obviously it's biggest strength is the fact they can basically build them anywhere. In general, it's still a great passive bonus compared to standard civilizations who have farms right beside drop off sites. Slavs is more or less farming on par to 10% and outside of Aztecs pre-wheelbarrow, are the best farmers in the game in terms of pure optimized gather rates. Aztecs have a great farming rate due to carry capacity having an indirect effect on the villager gathering mechanics. Because of this, the Aztecs are actually the best farmers in the game in the Dark Age / Pre-Wheelbarrow. However, this drops off rather quickly due to the Aztecs being affected by the 24 FpM cap. Even though they do not have a difference in gather rates compared to most civilizations after Hand Cart (The tests resulted in a slightly slower gather rate, but that is likely due to bad RNG), the extra carry capacity gives the Aztecs the best Double Layer farming in the game actually. The Berbers I'm actually rather surprised. While the extra movement is just a nice, minor passive bonus as it always has been, I was thinking that the extra speed would make the Berbers great as doing double layer farms. This isn't the case. The Berbers are not that much efficient in doing double layer farms than most other civilizations. Mayans have a slower gather rate on purpose since the resource bonuses that they have also increases the workrate of villagers, so their tech tree has a negative workrate multiplier to the villagers to compensate. This is as close as they can get to generic civilizations without having a faster workrate. However, an interesting side effect for the Mayans in Definitive Edition is that Resource 190, the effect that grants Mayans extra food on food resources, now affects the workrate of Farms just like the Slavs. Because of this, the Mayans are no longer affected by the 24 Food per Minute cap that Farms have (Except for the Slavs) and can now farm slightly faster than average after Hand Cart. This is clearly a bug and should be fixed soon. With it fixed, the Mayans with Hand Cart would farm at just above 24 Food per Minute just like mostly everyone else. That being said, the one thing you should never do with the Mayans is double layer farms, it's very inefficient for them due to the naturally lower workrates. Test 2: Game Speed Differences
I decided to also test gamespeeds in Definitive Edition since that hasn't really been tested yet. The test is the same as the previous result\While gamespeed before had somewhat of a noticeable effect in HD and even the original 1.0c release, the Farming rates between gamespeeds in Definitive Edition are, at best, very minor. Even though it still follows the usual trend of slower gamespeeds = higher gather rates, due to the randomness of Farming in general, there could actually be no difference and the progressive rate could just be a coincidence. I also do not think 1.5x speed is the "fastest", I just think they had better RNG luck and at best, it's the same as 1.0x speed, if there is a gatherrate difference. Test 3: True Khmer Farming Rate Testing The testing method in this test is simply a single villager and a farm in the Dark Age getting 10 food as fast as they can in multiple games each. The Khmer uses the new "trickle" mechanic while the Generic Civilization uses a custom Dataset that sets the villager drop off to the Farm. This is different from the Khmer since this method, the villager automatically drops off the food when at 10 food and does not trickle in. The point of this test is to make sure that the new bonus isn't directly contributing to a faster gathering rate besides the lack of drop off sites. As in, the Khmer are not actually farming faster than regular civilizations Generic Civ: (Average = 27 seconds) 29, 29, 28, 28, 28, 28, 28, 28, 28, 27, 26, 26, 26, 25, 25, 25, 25 Khmer: (Average = 28.667 seconds) 33, 32, 32, 31, 30, 29, 29, 29, 29, 28, 28, 27, 27, 27, 26, 26, 25 Result: Khmer farm roughly 6.17% slower than generic civilizations in terms of gathering food, but the lack of drop off sites more than makes up for it. Off topic and probably unnecessary, but as of this, I'm taking a break from Age of Empires. I just have way too much going on and internal issues with the community is not helping with things. Beginner question about hotkeys + unit queueing Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:36 AM PST Hi guys, Noob here. Quick question about this situation: endgame, lots of different military buildings. I queue a ton of units in all buildings, more than the 200 pop limit. No problem here, because units are dying, and then the new units will be produced. But lets assume I realize: oh sh*t I need more from this type of unit right now. But because all production queues are full, I don´t even know how long it takes for this unit to come out. So what I want to do is: clear all unit production queues, and basically "start over" with what I want to produce. How do I do that? Is there a hotkey for this? I can´t be the only one who runs into this situation, any other hints/ best practices for me? Or any good article / video out there? Basically a "how-to handle engame chaos with unit production under high stress without getting totally confused, noob edition"? Crash that causes game window to turn pitch black Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:42 AM PST Every now and then my game has a few hiccups that completely freezes the PC for a few moment. If I'm lucky, it stops and I can still play. If not, the entire video output crashes (I assume GPU driver is the problem here), turning every window I'm opening black. All recover, except for the game. I can still type, move my mouse, but the game window is completely black. I can't see anything. What can I do to fix this? How to properly build a defensive base? Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:30 AM PST So I'm completely new to the game, I'm playing Standard vs AI, started at Easiest -> Standard, and now I'm on Moderate with 5x AI, no one is teamed up
Now in the third game, I didn't feel like my Towers did ANY damage at all to the horsemen, they didn't kill a single one for like a minute, and there were at least 3 towers constantly shooting them You have to branch out quite a lot to get Gold/Stone, do I build a massive wall that surround everything I'm gathering from, or how do I properly seal myself in? None of the game I've played I've had a choke point that I could take advantage off, there's no cliffs or anything (so far).. playing on "Full Random" location So basically, it feels way too expensive to build a massive wall since I have to build towers around it all too, my Towers seems to deal zero damage to Armored horsemen, how do I counter that? I've watched a few youtube videos but I don't really wanna straight up copy a playstyle or anything like that. Would just love some tips I do really prefer the defensive playstyle, which civilization would be ideal for that? Thanks! Are Franks as strong as they were before DE? Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:24 AM PST The only change they got is that they don't get the extra hp on scouts until feudal age, but was it enough to make the civilization that had the best win rates in +2000 rated games on voobly fall behind Chinese, Aztecs and Mayans? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:42 PM PST Yesterday I made a thread wondering if we had a FFA Reddit clan and yo my surprise not only do we not have a FFA, but appearently we dont have any reddit clans in AoE2. I'm new to steam (opened an account last week to buy this game) but thought that perhaps they would have a community for the game and that i could find FFA Sub community. After all my searching and asking, i have found that its very difficult to find clans, and especially difficult for finding FFA battle clans. The best i could do is find a small twitch streamer with a discord that supposedly focuses on FFA battles. So here I am, trying hard to find a FFA Community and clan so i can join FFA battles. I would make a clan, but i would start it with 1 member (me) and probably use the streamers discord (he said i would be more then welcomed). Before i make the clan, I'd like to see if there is a way to find a FFA community. If all else fails, i will try to make a FFA clan. I would really prefer if someone else did it, as i am incredibly noobish in AoE2 DE. Here is the discord of the twitch streamer if you would like to join it. I'm really grateful how Microsoft handled the DE Version Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:05 AM PST Well i guess it's obvious what made me think about this right? WC3R is the fucking desaster i and many others expected it to be and just look at AOE2DE. It's simply amazing despite it's flaws. Don't get me even started with the support Microsoft is throwing towards the competetive community. Yeah Blizzard made a even bigger $$ injection and came up with a whole new format but hey, that's maybe on the horizon and yeah i also know that like 50k $ isn't really something worth mentioning for microsoft. Still, i'm grateful that one of the best rts games of all time got the overhaul it deserved and WC3R just reminded me of how much worse it could have gotten. Is it normal for AOE2 tournaments to have such long sets? Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:58 AM PST I mean, finals is best out of 11 ??? Compared to starcraft 2, the finals is at most best out of 5. And I think the game length is the same for both game. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:29 PM PST Whilst waiting for a match, it would be cool if there were mini games you could play. For example: quick walling a villager(s), microing military units (conversions, attacks, etc). Thoughts? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:28 PM PST Anyone else experiencing a bug where units killed/lost is not calculated properly? It either reads 0 or a random number less than 5, even when hundreds of units have died. Effects all players, not just me either [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:55 PM PST I've played other RTSs (AOE3, SC2 and SC:BW) and I'm looking to try AOE2, but I don't know if I would like it. So I'd like to ask how it compares to those games: - How difficult is it in comparison? - How fast-paced is it? - What does it focus on (macro, micro, multi-tasking, strategy, etc) - Any significant differences in game mechanics (like XP and shipments in AOE3) All in all, coming from those games, would you recommend AOE2? (I'm guessing you will considering this is the AOE2 subreddit :D) [link] [comments] |
