My noob AoE2 story. Also, a request to ELI5 the online multiplayer scene.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

I first played AoE2 about 15 years back. Ultra defensive - played mostly by myself and occasionally on LAN with my brother. AI always on Easy. Map, mostly Black Forest or Fortress. 'All Tech' enabled. Population 100. Civilization almost always Britons in 2v2 games (One AI ally, 2 AI enemies). Walled up well with Bombard towers, boomed economy and launched one mighty assault with Paladins, Elite Longbowmen, Scorpions, Monks and Trebuchets that was usually successful. An unappetizing approach but it was engaging to me then...

On to the present. Rediscovered AoE2 a couple of weeks back. Bought AoE2 HD off Steam (DE was deemed incompatible with my old laptop) and have been slightly more adventurous than before. AI on Moderate, 'All Tech' disabled, experimenting with different civilizations with a fair bit of homework on strengths, weaknesses and strategy. Playing 2v2 or 3v3 games locally and generally winning. Reading up on strategies on Reddit and elsewhere. I now want to try my hand at multiplayer games, initially pairing up with humans for 2H v 2AI or 3H v 3AI. The Lobby Browser on the game is pretty confusing. And I see terms like 'ELO', ranked/unranked' and different places/sites like Voobly/Steam, etc thrown about in this sub. How do I get started, by picking games with players of similar experience and do I have a choice of map (no water-based ones for now)?

TL;DR Noob who last played in the 2000s is starting out again and wants to explore the multiplayer scene.

Is right click buggy for anyone else?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 06:23 AM PST

Lately when I right click, to attack and kill a single unit, my units will attack as if it was a patrol command and just attack the first unit they see....... It's really frustrating

    Small Showmatches vs Big Events

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 03:16 AM PST

I'm a really passionate guy who wants to see this game played at much higher scenes as an esport. I believe the most important issue is small price pools. Being a 20 year old game or slow pace or old graphics don't matter at all. Professionals always follow the money. People always follow professionals.

Lately from what I observe, there are a lot of showmatches happening every other day. Couple of hundred dolars are scatered every other day among the same 10 players. I would personally love to see those small pricepools add up to much bigger events. I believe 200 dolar showmatches are not taken seriously by the players or spectators. Even the group stages of big event make me feel like I'm watching a very high quality showmatch because of the preperation. Also, microsoft currently contributing to the big events, I see this as a very good opportunity to elevate this game.

    What are your opinions?

Help request: Running DE on an old MacBook

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 03:46 AM PST

Hi guys, I was hoping you could help me and my friend out to get DE running on his MacBook Pro 15inch, mid '14. His hardware stats:

    • 2.8GHz i7
    • 16GB RAM
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048MB & Intel Iris Pro 1536MB

So far we've been trying to get it done using Parallels, but Steam won't start the game claiming that his system doesn't fulfil the requirements. I suppose that's because some of the hardware is needed to keep the Mac OS running and therefore Parallels/Steam can't access all of the power.

My question's basically: Do you think it would work with BootCamp or do you have any other idea for how to get this running? PlayOnMac is super buggy, unfortunately – we can't even navigate the Steam interface that way.

    Cheers!

If there is a bonus for petards...

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 01:15 AM PST

What would it be? Which one(s) do you prefer? Such bonus can be a civ bonus/team bonus/unique tech. (I'd prefer the last one tho, and make it team bonus)

    • +HP
    • +Armor
    • +Speed
    • -Cost
    • +Attack (and/or AoE damage)
    • Ability to garrison in rams or siege towers

    My Thoughts On AoE2:DE (HarvestBuildDestroy)

What do you think of the Move v/s Attack Move default preference order being optionally reversed?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 01:39 AM PST

So currently right-clicking units issues a simple Move/Attack command. Experienced players know that for combat it's much better to issue a Patrol or at least Attack Move command instead, which is doable with a hotkey (or UI button). But this also leads to a lot of unnecessary losses for newer players, plus a lot of people just don't like that Patrol is useful in AoE 2 in a way that has nothing to do with what a patrol command is meant to be about.

So what if there was an option added to the game that allowed you to switch the default such that right-clicking now issued an Attack Move (which also now works much better in DE), and the usual Attack Move hotkey is now used to issue a standard Move/Attack command? That would simplify things so much for everyone, and for those who're used to pressing that hotkey all the time they can simply play with this option unchecked.

Another idea (which could be implemented either instead of or even with the above change) could be for the switch to be based on the number of right-clicks issued on the same spot/unit. So with the normal behaviour, a single right-click would issue a Move/Attack command, while a double (or triple, if you want to prevent misclicks better) right-click would issue an Attack Move order. And with the reversed order option ticked, a single right-click would issue an Attack Move, while a double (/triple) would issue a standard Move/Attack order. This could also be implemented as an option to enable.

The purpose of all this is of course to ease the reliance on hotkeys, and especially unintuitive ones Patrol (and yes, I know Patrol and Attack Move have clickable buttons on the UI, but that's hardly convenient most of the time). This should help ease access to the game and reduce the muscle memory required for micromanagement, allowing players to focus on more strategic skills like unit composition, eco balance, scouting, etc. You'll still benefit immensely from micro btw, but for more intuitive reasons like focus firing units down, utilizing hill bonuses or picking on weak units, rather than trying to manipulate which AI behavior your units are operating under. Let people pick which of those AI behaviors they'd like as their default so they can manage other stuff.

Btw, this idea came to because of disputes about appropriate unit behavior under bug reports like this - https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/right-click-is-broken-in-melee-combat/61073/17 It seemed like a good way to satisfy both sides by letting the people who want to play the game with the simple right-click, without losing out in combat, to do so if they want (with one check in the Options menu).

    AOE2 DE high ping

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 07:48 AM PST

Is it normal to get from 100 to 200 ping in ranked DE 1v1 games? I usually get from 100 to 200 ping in all games i play, while in other multiplayer games i get consistent 40 ping. Does this happen to everybody else and they just play through it or is it just me? Is there any way to fix this?

    Auto attacking?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 12:39 PM PST

Does anyone know what the deal is with that annoying auto attacking crap? I mean where you are in a fight, and you order some of your units to move somewhere or attack a specific target, and then less then a second later, they turn around again and attack another enemy when they aren't supposed to. It's so infuriating and has ruined so many plans for me.

And this can even happen on No Attack Stance if I choose to attack a specific target.
