    Ooh boy this is a juicy one!

    Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Burmese vs Ethiopians, and next up is the Mayans vs Persians!

    Mayans: Archer civilization

    • Start with +1 Villager, but -50f
    • Resources last +15% longer
    • Archers cost -10/20/30% per Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Stone Walls and Gates cost -50%
    • Unique Unit: Plumed Archer ("Trash unit" -Hera, 2020) [the unit is actually still very good]
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Obsidian Arrows (Archer-line +6 attack vs buildings)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: El Dorado (Eagle Warriors +40 hp)

    Persians: Cavalryand Trashbow civilization

    • Start with +50w, +50f
    • TCs and Docks 2x hp; work +5/10/15/20% faster per Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 attack vs archers
    • Unique Unit: War Elephant (Essentially a Mumakil)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kamandaran (Archer-line now costs 60w)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Mahouts (War Elephants +30% faster)

    Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty everyone, so a certain smart and handsome content creator recently placed these two civs as 3rd and 4th best when it comes to 1v1 Arabia, so obviously I think both of these guys are absolutely top tier in that setting. Mayans have that consistent power level throughout the game, and between archers, plumes, and eagle warriors, are usually able to out-tempo most other civs. However, Mayans will have a hard time unseating the implacable Persians, whose cavalry, super-TCs and strong eco can do an incredibly good job of buying time for a powerful post-Imp. Whom do you favor here?
    • On Nomad, back on WK/HD, I would have said these two civs are pretty even - as in, both are incredibly good. However, Mayans have received a couple small nerfs and Persians a couple strong buffs, so is this match up now lopsided on Nomad?
    • On Arena, Mayans are a historically strong civ, what with the FC plumes and eagle warriors and all, but now Persians, with their incredible boom, are now a popular pick on the map. With space being something of an issue, and map control/relics being even more important here, would you say that Mayans should have the edge when it comes to pressuring down a Persian player?

    I only had a few small lakes. After building two mills, I realised none of the fish could be reached from the shore. After the game finished, I could see the other team had plenty of empty lakes and mills. It took me 35 pop to get to feudal age with farms.

    TheViper and automatic farm renewal

    Custom unit models in campaign

    I know this is a long shot, but I'm gonna try it anyway.

    So somehow I have managed to change the unit models in the indian campaign, i.e. the long swordsmen changed into eastern swordsmen (with cool scimitar and turbans and stuff) but on the next mission they turned back into regular long swordsmen. The problem is - I have no idea what I did, I tried to subscribe to the same mod - I think it was something called unique civs or something liked that.

    Anyway, I tried to raise it's priority, re-subscribed etc. and it is working perfectly fine in a Standard game but it doesn't work any longer in campaigns and I am going mad of the thought that it was working before and now I don't know how to use it again (I know I know... but it was so much more immersive and I don't want to go back to vanilla units).

    This is AoE 2: DE by the way, thank you for any suggestions in advance!

    Go to Civ or Random civ?

    What is better? Chosing a civ and always playing with it or use random and learn several strategies?

    Im used to play 100% of my ranked games with the Franks, but i play non ranked games with pretty much any civ, should i also go for random civ in ranked?

    How do you feel about malians and the gbeto.

    I've heard a lot about this civ and have recently been looking into playing them more. How to you guys feel about how the play and what their best army composition is from feudal to imp. Also what do you think about a scout to light cav transition with farimba?

    Does the Microsoft Store version connect you to the same servers as the Steam version?

    I just played a 2v2 were my ally got castle rushed by the mayans, then franks knights came in the hole made by petards

    I was watching with the feeling of culpability as vikings.. But what would have been ok for me to do?

    Hotkey question: Multiple keys, 1 function

    Hi,

    I was wondering if it is possible to bind multiple keys to 1 function.

    I know the reverse is possible (fe. DE allows you to bind the E key to both aggressive and defensive stance)

    So basically i would like to bind "Patrol" to the keys [E, R, Y].

    I know this is not possible within the options menu of DE, but maybe it is possible using custom hotkey files (like in sc2).

    Old campaign voice-overs

    Hey all,

    Just bought the Definitive Edition, and it seems they re-voiced the old campaigns. The new voice acting is pretty jarring when replaying the old campaigns; it's not bad, but my brain expects "Cuauthemoc, jaguar warrior of Tenochtitlan" to sound quite a bit different. Are there any mods to replace the new intros with the old ones?

    DPI Mouse: Voobly x DE

    At Voobly, I used 1250 DPI of the mouse. Now in DE, I use 2300 DPI. That's right? The movement of the mouse and camera in DE is much slower, you need to increase the sensitivity of the mouse a lot. And I use the game's sensitivity to the maximum, and I also put the mouse inertia to zero. With this DPI on Voobly, it is very fast, even bad to play. Did someone also increase their mouse's DPI when they migrated to DE?

    I would like to start an epic screen shot thread, comprised of the community's most epic pictures of their own glorious battles. Each one may have a back story leading up to or describing it. Make it epic! Here are a bunch to start off with. Ever since I started watching S.O.T.L and Hera, I've been winning nearly all my games online. It also helps that I'm a top DM player that is just starting to learn RM.
    So, with that being said, please share the most epic pics you have or can take. Just press f-12 to save to your steam library or do it the old fashion way, it matters not. Let's see em! Single or multiplayer... just make them glorious and use the default resolution (dont zoom in or out with scroll wheel for max. crispness).

    Bulgarian Seige on Meso Americans

    Light cav charging elephant archers down slope

    fully upgraded bulgarian two handed swords and dismounted konniks battle halbs

    swordsmen charging trebs and eagles

    the last stand of the konniks. they were surrounded by gothic legionaries streaming out of the barracks yet they fought like demons. each konnik had atleast 3 kills each.

    I just started to do my 10 placements match in ranked 1vs1 and i gain a lot of points, like +50, and still gaining 30+ after the 10 placements match, is it because im new to the ladder or because i beat people with more elo ?

    Skirmishers vs archers

    What is the fastest way to go Feudal, regardless of the rest of the game.

    Lets say i want to go feudal as fast as possible. Without caring for wood, and the rest of the game.

    What would be the best course of action?

    Send all vils to sheep, boar and deer, and build a mill. No lumber?

    [Map Editor] Any way to get AI to be "turned off" initially?

    I made a map, and I have the AI player guarding specific spots. I don't want the AI to move the units off of those spots, but when the AI builds itself up (i.e. makes villagers and advances through the ages) the new units it makes will be allowed to rush and attack the player.

    Is there any way to make the AI "defensive" for the initial units that it spawns with, but allow it to attack with the units it makes itself?

    Looking for a (relatively) easy way to do this, I don't know how to do this other than forcing the AI to be defensive through triggers and assigning every single one of the AI's units to a specific area. Which would be tedious, but if there's any other way..?
