Math Proof of Why Viper Met Hera in the Finals with Random Seeding

Math Proof of Why Viper Met Hera in the Finals with Random Seeding

There has been some people who claim that Viper meeting Hera in the finals is proof that the seeding was rigged. Conspiracy theorists say the random seeding was rigged to bring more viewers. Here's why the math proves them wrong.

For a Viper vs Hera final, they must win each of their other games. Well, this did happen in HC3. Secondly, Viper and Hera must be in different "halves". Now I understand math is a difficult topic, so I made this handy diagram:

    https://preview.redd.it/vubpu0xzylo41.png?width=322&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c36108d7148154bdf66beffb4d2331873dfa034

Viper being yellow and Hera being green. Once you have drawn Viper out of the pool of 16 contestants, the pool has shrunk to 15, which is why the odds in the bottom table are 15 instead of 16.

As you can see, the chances of Viper meeting Hera in the final are 6% higher than the chances of Viper not meeting Hera in the final. Therefore, it was always more likely to happen than not. Conspiracy DEBUNKED.

But now I've gotten started...lets answer even more questions that were never asked:

What is the probability that Viper meets Hera in the Semi Final?

For Viper to meet Hera in the Semi Final, Hera must not meet Viper in the Final. This sounds obvious, but it narrows the pie from 100% to just 47%. From this 47%, we get this second diagram:

    https://preview.redd.it/3lafzjuz0mo41.png?width=325&format=png&auto=webp&s=266525b90f7cdc6a287d87f865b150440ae62a4e

So the chances of Viper meeting Hera in the Semi Final have dropped to 25%. Our pie shrank to 47%, which is why we weren't able to give better odds than 25%.

What is the probability that Viper meets Hera in the Quarter Final?

For Viper to meet Hera in the Quarter Final, Hera must not meet Viper in either the Final or the Semi Final. This means our pie we can allocate is just 22%.

    https://preview.redd.it/bexjvszy1mo41.png?width=325&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d74d8c242a441b834efb000c711cf92c1edeff3

The odds of Viper meeting Hera in the Quarter Final are much higher than meeting him in the Round of 16.

    To summarize:

Viper vs Hera Final = 53%

Viper vs Hera Semi Final = 25%

Viper vs Hera Quarter Final = 15%

Viper vs Hera Round of 16 = 7%

If both players win their matches against other players, Hera was always destined to face Viper in the Finals, even with Random Seeding. There is no conspiracy.

Nicov on the other hand, yes, yes, T90 always wanted to knock him out early.

We are in 2020 God DAMN IT!

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 04:53 AM PDT

Since the release of Definitive Edition I am sure, many of you ask the same question.
Although the interface and graphics along with new QoL updates made our lives a lot easier, there are still a lot of features missing from the game released in 2020. For clarity, I will list some of the features that should be in the game yet, they are not present starting from easy ones.

    1. Displaying rank while queuing for ranked game in search menu (new Feature).
      - Nothing to add here, why wouldn't you want to see your rank while searching for the game does not make sense. I understand some streamers would want to hide their rank so at least make this feature to view your rank selecting profile tab WITHOUT leaving your party.
    2. Ability to browse Technology tree while queuing for a game (New Feature)
      - Another example of adding one button and then disappearing the screen after the game is found or at least send a only top notification to alert that the match has been found
    3. Being able to reconnect to the match you have lost connection to (New Feature)
      - This is a big one. A lot of us, including myself can have an unreliable connection. Occasional drops are happening. How the hell you cannot reconnect to the game in 2020 is making my brain pop out. It is just a simple feature every basic game has. Include pauses that could be resumed after 3 minutes or so and give the ability for disconnected player to get back in game. You do not wanna lose your 1.5 hour progress because of simple disconnect.
    4. In-game invites and (occasionally) steam invites are broken (FIX)
      - For the last three days I have been counting the missing in-game invites that are invisible to other players or steam invites that I had to spam continuously to finally send to my fellow friend. The number of them was countless. Also you cannot send in-game invite repeatedly, sometimes it says player is in the game but in reality, the game is just loading for him. You send him the invite, he does not get that and you can not send the invite anymore. Fix that please.
    5. Match History (New Feature)
      - Even Voobly had some basic features of match history. I would like to see the feature of being able to view your last matches as well as being able to click on them to display final score, map and more.
    6. Replays (New Feature)
      - A long one... Replays are one of the features that should be tweaked to perfection. There is a lot of missing potential. Like a timeline that you could go through, displaying important events in the game (advancing to the next age or important buildings built). We do not have any of that and watching the replay only by speed up buttons reminds me of going to gulag for a year.
    7. Better Scoreboard (New Feature)
      - From the AoE2 HD, scoreboard has not changed. How about adding some new columns like amount of healing done to units or more interesting ones. I am sure any of the fellow redditors could find a scoreboard stat that should be added to give better perspective of the game.
    8. Inability to see created lobby (FIX)
      - Many times, I have created a lobby game and people would not be able to see it. Neither my friends. This might be a server issue but still, this should not happen.

    Conclusion
These Most of these features are easily fixable if they have a good code structure. Let's not suffer because of their inability to improve the basics. Since the game does not have any in-game purchases I understand it would only cost them more to maintenance servers and data. I am more glad to pay some kind of online subscription upgrade that would add these features but also sure that added time to implement these features would widely benefit both new and current players. If you have any more suggestions that would improve the gameplay feel free to add them in the comments below.

    PS
This post is not an insult. This post is a reminder that, like mentioned in the comments, the game should evolve. I would gladly keep it as a copy of AoE2 HD with reworked graphics, but adding functionality and a lot of QoL updates that fixes problems that AoE2 HD had can, in my opinion, benefit new player base as well as the old one.

EDIT (features recommended by other users not mentioned above)

    1. Ability to browse through the game while queuing for ranked game
    2. Filters in unranked lobby should save their state.
    3. Fix or improve melee pathing

Archer civs are more comfortable to use than knight civs-the truth or me being pepega

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I feel like Archer civs are much easier to use and also have had a lot more success with them.

So when Playing archers, you probably will already have a mass of them going into castle and will get crossbow and bodkin. If the opponent is going for elite skirm defense,it is extremely easy to just put down a stable and create knights because you really don't need to get any upgrades except +1 defense and you wipe out skirms.

If you make knights and the opponent goes pike defense, you have to make many archery ranges and get either crossbow or eskirm apart from fletching and you have to mass them.

You could opt for a siege workshop but mangonels really don't do much when pikes create so quickly.

You could run around the opponents base avoiding the pikes but for that you have to break into the opponents base, which is hard with knights since they have to run away from pikes and vils can wall behind. Also invading the enemy base with archers is safe, while knights constantly take damage from tcs.

    Suggestion on civ balance changes

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 12:09 AM PDT

The following are only about civ-specific changes. General changes like Steppe Lancers are not included because that's too much for one post.

    Chinese

    • Lose Redemption
      • With the level of players gradually improving over the years, people finally realize how strong Chinese can be despite their bonus have very little changes throughout the years. And then developers decided to give them Block Printing when Chinese is at its all time peak.
      • I don't think the developers are going to revert their changes on "block printing", and, controversial opinion incoming, I actually support that after some thoughts. There is a lot of people play this game over other RTS game because of the historical aspect. And I'm not just talking about money for MS, but as a player, why do you want to call them Chinese if the civilization don't feel like it?
      • Of course game balance is important, don't get me wrong, but I believe we can achieve both side of arguments. So my suggestion here is to take away redemption to make them more vulnerable to bombard cannon and siege onagers. It can also be a nerf on Chinese in Castle age, although the effect will not be significant. They never struggled against a smush anyway.

    Goths

    • Infantry cost 35% less starting from feudal age
      • Infinite drush with Goths can get boring easily, but I think there is a bigger problem behind this. Not that it is broken or OP, but player should earn the Goth spam. In the past, you have to work hard for the spam, either defend your base well or give high pressure on your enemy, and if you play well and get to the late castle age with good eco, the infantry spam will be your reward. Right now, the whole thing just come too easily, which takes away a big part of the game where you build up your economy for a big push. It is not fun to play, and it also further decreases the skill cap for this civ, so I suggest it to revoke back to the original bonus.
    • Hunters carry +15 food no longer requires mill or Town Centre to drop off food
      • Just a very slight boost to their early game to make them stay afloat in the game. You still want to lure your boar to your TC for less idle time of villagers and for safety reason, so the bonus is more about the deer and extra boars in maps like Black Forest. Not needing a mill on deer can mean 100W saved, and can be very good on certain maps like Steppe, but their bad defence means the hunters are very vulnerable to be raided. As the Goth player, you should go aggressive and gain map control if you want to safely take the deer far away from your TC.

    Incas

    • Villagers are now only affected by infantry defence upgrade
      • The bonus are supposed to make your villagers harder to be raid, but it seems like Noboru rush have brought the Incan trush into the next level. One of the reason why it is so hard to deal with, is how the villagers break through walls quickly, so you have very little time to prepare for the trush. Removing the attack upgrade on villagers can retain their ability to fend off raiding while nerfing their trush.

    Khmer

    • Lose arbalest
      • I thought they are elephant and scorpions civ, but right now they are functionally an archer civ with elephants, which reminds me a lot when Indians had arbalest. I just feel sad that the developers didn't think of giving them T90 farms before giving them arbalest, and now they are just a bit too strong with that. I would like to see Khmer being a civ with strong eco but limited to expensive units, rather than just an overall strong civ. We want more scorpions.

    Persians

    • Kamandaran cost increases from 400F 300G to 600F 600G
      • For some context, here are the cost to upgrade trash units in imperial age (excluding blacksmith/university upgrade):
        • Pikeman + Halberdier + squires 615F 690G
        • Light cavs + Hussar + bloodlines + husbandry 850F 750G
        • E. Skirms + Imp. Skirms 500W 550G
        • Magyars: E. Magyars Huszars + Mercenaries + bloodlines + husbandry 1300F 1000G
        • Malay: TH-swordsman (from militia) + Forced Levy + supplies + squires 1850F 905G
      • Crossbowman + Thumb ring only cost 425F 325G, the total cost would be 1425F 925G, fits between Magyars Huszars and Malay TH-trashman and is, I think, where the unit strength lies in. Given how strong Persians economy is I think it is certainly justified.

    Tatars

    • Lose "Free Parthian Tactics" bonus
    • New bonus: "Archery range upgrades cost 50% less"
    • Silk Armour changes to "Cavalry units +1 pierce armour"
      • I don't have much to say for this one. Until we find a good place for Steppe Lancer, Tatars will just be another weaker/stronger Huns regardless of the civ bonus.

    Spanish

    • Elite Conquistador upgrade cost reduced from 1200F 600G to 800F 600G
      • Conqs in imperial are not that good in general. They always overkill and in late game there is little room for micro, and the expensive upgrade cost is just asking people to transition their gameplay into other units. While they are quite bad in current meta, I think Spanish is still a good choice in team game with that trade bonus and paladin. All they need is a cheaper upgrade on conqs for 1v1 game.

    HC3 balance: Quickwalling

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 12:45 AM PDT

Is quickwalling good or bad for this game?

In all games of HC3 there were plenty of amazing quick-walling successes (and fails), but there was one particular Ravines game that stood out to me:

One player strategically walled, while the other left his base entirely open, relying on his ability to quickwall, to some succes, negating a camel-raid.

This got me thinking, isn't Aoe2 a strategy game?

Should a bad strategic choice not be punished? Should aggression, when executed correctly and timely, not be rewarded? Should walling not be an inherently costly and slow strategic choice?

Quickwalling gives the benefit of economy & speed (no walls) with the benefit of safety (walls).

How do you think the game would look without quickwalling? (Fun of playing, balance, entertainment value, civ/map picks) For arguments' sake let's say:

    What if foundations were walkable?

In my opinion I think this would throw the game wide open in every direction, as build-orders would become less strict as leaving your eco unprotected can be punished more easily. While players might be more inclined to wall; it would also be a lot harder to pull off.

While a small cost to entertainment value for impressive quickwall micro, I would imagine a larger gain in strategic diversity, more villager kills and more unit-to-unit combat/micro.

I am not pro or con quickwalling, just want to hypothesise a bit... Thoughts?

    Nahuatl mod?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 07:49 AM PDT

    Pialli!

I've been on an Aztecs kick again, and it's annoying the heck outta me that for not one, but two major titles, Microsoft couldn't bother hiring one of over a million fluent Nahuatl speakers to voice act their units, and they instead speak a language that isn't even remotely related. I wonder if there's a mod out there for AoE2 (and even AoE3 would be nice) that's gotten a Nahuatl speaker on board to fix this problem for nerds like me.

Follow-up question: If not, if I could find a Nahuatl speaker with a decent mic and an interest, could someone else provide the modder?

How hard is it to make a graphic unit mod for AOE2DE?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 05:12 AM PDT

I want to have a mod for DE where the emblem(s) of the civilisations would replace the other marks on the Cavalier/Paladin shields, galley/galleon sails, pikemen, and more.

I would also like to use the heavy pikeman and Eastern swordsman skins for Cumans, Indians, Mongols, Persians, Saracens, Tatars, Turks. I will have to modify them a little for each civ, and find a way to make decent historical models for Chinese, Japanese, South-Eaat Asian, and American civs.

Do you guys have any ideas on how to do it, and where to start?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 11:03 PM PDT

War Elephants are stronger, but they require almost double the Food of a Battle Elephant to make, and they're only out of Castles. But the worst part is that Khmer Scorpions shred War Elephants, and Khmer have Siege Engineers while Persians don't. Makes the civ matchup more lopsided than one would think. I recently versed a Persian while playing as Khmer and there was nothing he could do.
