Battle of the civs whose units talk the most 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Celts vs Franks, and next up is the Malay vs Vietnamese!

    Malay: (Infantry) and Naval civilization

    • Advance in Age +66% faster
    • Fish Traps cost -33%, provide unlimited food
    • Battle Elephants cost -30%
    • TEAM BONUS: Docks +100% LoS
    • Unique Unit: Karambit Warrior (Fast, weak infantry that only costs .5 pop per unit)
    • Unique Building: Harbor (Dock upgrade that adds modest defensive capabilities)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Thalassocracy (Upgrades Docks to Harbors)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Forced Levy (Swordsmen's gold cost replaced by food)

    Vietnamese; Archer civilization

    • Enemy positions are revealed at start
    • Economic upgrades do not cost wood
    • Archery Range units +20%
    • Conscription free
    • TEAM BONUS: Imperial Skirmishers available at Archery Range
    • Unique Unit: Rattan Archer (Foot archer with very high pierce armor)
    • Unique Unit: Imperial Skirmisher (Imperial Age upgrade to Skirmisher line)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chatras (Battle Elephants +50 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Paper Money (Each player on your team receives 500g)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • No that we have a buffed Vietnamese, this match up becomes a lot more interesting! For your 1v1 Arabia, Malay are still going to have the more powerful economy, but Vietnamese possess a stronger, more diverse army. In a super late game scenario, both civs are absolute beasts when gold runs low. Which civ do you favor?
    • In team games, both of these civs definitely shine much more on the flank than in the pocket. That said, both civs have Bombard Towers, Arbalests, Halbs, and Elephants. Again, it seems to be the Malay eco vs the Vietnamese army. Does a team game scenario change this dynamic compared to Arabia?
    • Speaking of grindy 1v1 games, when there is no gold left on the map, Malay have access to forced levy swordsmen, FU halbs and skirms, but awful cavalry. Meanwhile, Vietnamese possess the imperial skirmisher, almost FU halbs, and decent cavalry. To me, this is a battle of the forced levy cost-efficiency vs the rattan/imp skirm cost-efficiency. Who do you think has the edge?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Tatars vs Turks. Hope to see you there! :)

Suggestions for improving Teutons, the F-tier civ.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 12:50 AM PDT

Recently Hera ranked Teutons as an F-tier civ in his overall civ tier-list along with goths. I've always liked Teutons, but tend to agree that they're not a very capable civ. It's only in imperial age that they come into their own, so here are a few ideas I had to help improve Teutons.

    These are their current bonuses:

    • Monks have double healing range.
    • Towers garrison twice as many units.
    • Murder Holes are free.
    • Farms are 40% cheaper.
    • Town Centers can garrison +10 units.
    • Barracks units receive +1 melee armor in the Castle Age.

    And their unique techs:

    • Castle Age Unique-tech Ironclad: Gives siege weapons +4 armor.
    • Unique-tech Crenellations: Gives Castles +3 range and makes garrisoned infantry shoot arrows.

Instead of giving a definitive list of changes that I want to see, this will be a large list of interchangeable suggestions. I'm not advocating for all of these changes to be Teutons. Feel free to shoot any of them down.

    1. Suggestion: Combine the "Town Centers can garrison +10 units." and "Towers garrison twice as many units." bonuses, because they're the same bonus at heart.

    2. Bonus: Scout Cavalry get +1 pierce armor per age (Teutons are unique in that they're stuck with scouts. Buffing their scouts to make them slightly more viable in feudal and late imperial age may give them some situational uses. Even with their low hp, they could become a cheap and effective pin-cushion for protecting Teutonic knights.)

    3. Bonus: Infantry deal additional damage to walls. (Encouraging Teutons to go for men-at-arms in feudal by allowing them to quickly bash down palisade walls would help solidify them as an infantry civ. This would also dovetail nicely with their castle-age bonus that grants their infantry +1 melee armor, and help them transition into Teutonic knights later on. Teutonic knights are a slow, imposing unit, so seeing them tear through stone walls would make them feel unstoppable.)

    4. Suggestion: Significantly lower the price of the Elite Teutonic Knight upgrade from 1200f 600g to 700f 400g. Justifying the hefty upgrade price for ETK necessitates you make a lot of Teutonic knights, but given how easy it is to counter massed Teutonic knights, no one wants to make the investment in competitive games. Lowering the price of the upgrade makes sprinkling in a smaller number of Teutonic knights a viable strategy in a wider range of games.

    5. Bonus: Town centers have +1 range. (Teutons are meant to be a defensive civ, so making it more difficult for early aggressors to pick off villagers would help Teutons get to the imperial age where they excel.)

Is there any way to turn off the embers before and after the match starts ?

It's making my game lag. Significantly slows my loading time after readying up for a rated match. If I could turn it off it would help a lot.

Can you give some tips about chinese?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 03:36 AM PDT

Hello, guys. I'm just beginner, and I like play chineses because of their flexible unit selection , knights, archers, camels and infantries.

But I feel hard to play chineses because of their uncommon start.

I usually build house just one vil, and 5 vils take sheep and upgrade loom.

After upgrade loom, I get food by sheep and train vil for wood.

Well... after of these, are there any caustions or important things play chineses?

[Win7] Screen freezes, all of a sudden

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 11:37 PM PDT

I returned to AoE2 just recently, playing to HD edition for a while before switching to DE.

Yesterday I played DE in the morning and it was all fine. When I relaunched the game in the afternoon I found I could no longer play.

Notice: I KNOW it's supposed to run on Windows 10, but I was able to install and run on Windows 7 without issues. Finished the tutorial (for nostalgia), the Barbarossa campaign, half of Art of War and half of Genghis Khan before this occurred (found this on GK4), so it doesn't seem to be a platform compatibility issue.

Menu loads fine, I launch a campaign, as soon as a couple seconds pass in the scenario the screen stops refreshing (music plays and units seem to respond to selection and hotkeys). If I swap to another window and back to the game the screen refreshes to that frame and doesn't update. It seems the lower 3 cm (1 inch) of the screen do refresh, from that point upwards everything is still. If I swap windows enough times, the window goes black and I can't tell what's going on anymore. Restarting doesn't help, rebooting the system doesn't help. Turning on or off V-Sync gives different outcomes (it seems with V-Sync on the interface is slightly more responding) but no solution. Running as admin doesn't help.

When the issue happens, as I wrote music still plays and the mouse is styled and reactive. Under the still image the game is "responsive", as I could hear the AI reacting to moves. Happened during scenarios, but also freezes if I don't leave the main menu. Log files show nothing strange, no warning messages.

Playing on Win7, on the main monitor of 2.
    Platform: Steam
Graphic card: AMD RX480 (just installed the newest updates to no avail).
    Processor: Intel i5 6500
    AoE2 version: 101. 101.36202.0 4819260

Did anyone run into the same issues and can provide a workaround or some troubleshooting tips?

I have a potato pc and I really want to play aoe2 and I bought Aoe 2 DE yesterday becaus my pc was in the minimum requirements but it doesn't run very well, about 30 fps. I'm thinking of reimbursing the game on steam to buy the hd edition, wich would run good, but I don't know how is the multiplayer and if it has a good number of people playing. Wich should I choose, HD edition or Definitive edition?

How do you counter 1 tc aggression?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 07:57 AM PDT

    Specifically crossbows+ a few knights.

I had already killed 2 vils in feudal and lost only 1.Reached castle about 10s(in game) after the opponent.

I put down 3 tcsand started making cav archers as huns, and I had about 15 skirms from feudal. My opponent arrived with 30 crossbows and 5 +1 knights.

I tried producing skirms from 3 ranges and got eskirm+tried to make pikemen while raiding with cav archers, but despite being fully walled my eco just got rolled and a tc got denied.

    I kinda got ghetto hoanged.

Top candidates for additional African civilizations

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:19 PM PDT

I know the addition of more civilizations to AOE2 is extremely unlikely, but it never hurts to dream!

I feel the African setting is underdeveloped in AOE2, despite the African Kingdoms expansion. Here are what I believe to be the best candidates among African civilizations for inclusion in the game:

    1. The Somalis

The Somalis are the biggest no-brainer. They directly interacted with the Saracens, Turks, Portuguese, and Ethiopians. They are not well-represented by any of the existing civilizations. They do not require a new architecture style. They had multiple impressive states during the time-frame of AOE 2 (the Ajuuran Sultanate was the first black African country to have ambassadors in China; the Adal Sultanate was the first black African country to use cannons and also conquered Ethiopia). Furthermore, the Somalis have their own country in the present day!

The Somali unique unit should probably be a cavalry unit. The Somalis employed both heavy and light cavalry.

Regardless, I think an African version of the steppe lancer should be available to the Somalis as well as the Ethiopians, both of which employed lancers and have celebrated cavalry traditions.

    1. The Nubians

The Nubians directly interacted with the Saracens and Ethiopians. The Nubians are currently represented in-game as the Archers of the Eyes. They are not well-represented by any of the existing civilizations. They do not require a new architectural style. They had multiple impressive states during the time-frame of AOE 2 (Makuria was the only North African power to defeat the Arabs during the early Muslim conquests and remained unconquered and Christian from 652 to 1276).

The Nubian unique unit should obviously be the Archer of the Eyes (although the stats and sprite should be altered)! Nubian archers were famous for their accuracy and they were also called "pupil-smiters."

    1. The Kongolese

The Kongolese directly interacted with the Portuguese. They are not well-represented by any of the existing civilizations and they would require a Southern African architecture style. The Kongolese had an impressive state, the Kingdom of Kongo, during the time-frame of AOE 2. The Kongolese are notable for defeating a Portuguese invasion in 1623 (an event which could arguably be squeezed into the AOE 2 timeline). The Kingdom of Kongo endured into the 20th century. The Kongolese make for a good addition because they would be so different thematically from other existing civs in the game.

As a Southern African faction, the Kongolese should have no stable line (cavalry were not used in Southern Africa because of the climate) but they should have access to gunpowder, which they gained through trade with the Portuguese. They should have access to a Southern African equivalent to the Eagle Warrior line.

The Kongolese unique unit should be the Adarguiero! The elite infantry of the Kingdom of Kongo wielded massive shields and swords. I imagine they could function as a defensive rather than offensive version of the Huskarl (perhaps being slow with regeneration and not being easily spammable).

    1. The Zimbabweans

The Zimbabweans directly interacted with the Portuguese. They are not well-represented by any of the existing civilizations and they would require a Southern African architecture style. The Zimbabweans had multiple impressive states during the time-frame of AOE 2 (the most notable is the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which produced Great Zimbabwe, the largest stone structure in pre-colonial Southern Africa).

Like the Kongolese, the Zimbabweans should have no stable line (cavalry were not used in Southern Africa because of the climate) but they should have access to gunpowder, gained from the Portuguese. They should also have access to a Southern African equivalent to the Eagle Warrior line.

I'm not sure what the Zimbabwean unique unit should be. Perhaps an anti-infantry skirmisher (javelin thrower) with no minimum range to reflect the popularity of the spear and javelin in Southern Africa.

    Honorable mentions:

I think the four civilizations above would make great additions to AOE2 without overloading the game with African civilizations. It's hard to justify adding more than four more African civilizations to the game. That said, these are some other civilizations that could plausibly qualify for inclusion:

The Swahilis (controlled powerful city-states along the Swahili coast and have major cultural legacy).

The Ghanians (the Ghanian Empire is one of the most popularly-known historical African states and was a sort of predecessor to the Malian Empire).

The Songhai (the Songhai people created both the Gao Empire and the Songhai Empire, which was the large and influential successor of the Malian Empire).

The Kanembu (the Kanem-Bornu Empire existed in some form from 700 to 1893).

The Edo (the people of the Kingdom of Benin. Benin was small but extremely sophisticated).

If you have any suggestions for how to make this list better, let me know. Hope you all find this interesting. :)

Fun fact: Sandy Petersen, one of the original Ensemble Studios game designers of AOE 2, proposed the following four civilizations for an African expansion: the Songhai, the Ethiopians, the Ghanians, and the Kongolese, as he shares here: http://aok.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/aokcgi/display.cgi?action=st&fn=3&tn=38338&f=,,,&st=125

Can do well against the AI but not against real players

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:16 AM PDT

When DE was released, I trained a lot against the AI to get myself ready for ranked games. So once I could steadily beat the extreme AI with non-cheesy methods, I've decided to hope into ranked.

So I thought that I'll be breezing through maybe up to 1200s because I've seen player that can only beat hardest AI but in the 1300s. However, I've only reached 1100 before I started struggling. My winrate is only 50+ percent now and I'm only barely 1100.

So what should I practice to improve against real players? I've noted that I mainly begin to fall apart upon reaching castle. I've almost always have a better early game than the other player (I've practiced build orders a ton). But at castle age I just have no idea what to do since build order doesn't cover it.

TL:DR; how to practice for castle age onwards where build orders don't cover?
