How to proper defend weak units (e.g. siege, monks)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:40 AM PDT

How to proper defend weak units (e.g. siege, monks)

I'm looking for army formations that work better to defend weak/expensive units, especially in mass combats.

I know how to counter, but not how to make and use a formation+stance that guarantees (or minimizes) weaker/more-expensive units losses.

I'd like to point out two different situations, quite common in late stages of the game.

Typical situation 1 - stationary attack:

    - you are attacking with trebuchet the enemy castle (stationary unit then)
    - the enemy is sending you paladins
    - you have camels, alabardiers, champions, younameit, to be used as defense

    Then: what would you do?

Maybe you would carefully take your time, before the attack, to move to a "restricted" passage point in which you naturally minimize flank attacks, it this exists? But then...

Restricted point to minimize flank attacks

...if only open-ground options are available, or even if such restricted passages could be found,

how do you set your army then?

    a) Line Formation + Defensive Stance (+ Guard): unfortunately all the army moves towards the incoming target, leaving free space to enemy units to reach the defended weaker unit.
    Any suggestion here?

    b) Line Formation + Stand Ground? Horrible to see, Paladins can easily pass through the backdoor;

    Line Formation + Stand Ground

    c) Box Formation + Stand Ground? Leaves so much space in between defending units that paladins can easily sneak through lines, plus the one-by-one fight alabardier+paladin is easily lost;
fewer defensive units are the choice so to be closer to defended target?
Moreover, if not exactly in range, defensive units won't attack enemies, that means even if inside the box.

    Box Formation + Stand Ground

Typical situation 2 - moving the army:

    - you have to defend scorpions/monks from potential paladins attacks not yet in range
    - your units are moving

What would you do in order to be ready to fight in the shortest time possible?
Would you then try to switch your army configuration as for "Typical situation - stationary attack" as soon as you spot your enemy?
Or would you suggest to switch to a more "dynamic" configuration, maybe with no "Stand Ground" option to better adapt to dynamic targets?

    Formation:
    - Box, with weaker units in the middle?
    - Line, with weaker units at the bottom?

    Stance:
    - Defensive, and trying to manually avoid that units spread too much, thus leaving undefended the weaker units?
    - Stand Ground, with the risk of underuse your army attack potential?

    Grouping:
    - units are selected all together, movements commands are given to the whole group?
    - movements commands are given to the weaker units only; stronger/defensive units are set to "Guard" weaker ones? However, this might easily lead to this uneffective configuration:

    Guard option; not very \"guarding\"

I didn't find any tutorial, suggestion, regarding this very common practices.
I keep loosing expensive siege units and monks way too often in the game and this often leads me to underuse them and only when I clearly foresee a situation in which I am sure to be able to defend them, thus very rarely.

    Hope in your suggestions!

    Server availabillity and performance

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:55 AM PDT

So I´ve come to a point now not knowing if I want to continue the MP or not.

I love aoe, played it ever since, but the problems coming with it make me go insane.

The problems I encountered and often read about online since I wanted a fix for it:
    1) not beeing able to connect to a server (pretty rare, but if there stays for a while)
    2) starting a game, but not getting to hear the intro music -> crash
    3) having started the game, runs good for mostly < 1min, but then freezes for everybode (Async error code)
    4) also having started the game, after short amount of time serious input lag, for all/ some of the mates -> sometimes unplayable at this point
    5) played the game into late game -> input/ connection lag, unplayable.

I´ve too read how smooth it runs for many ppl out there, but I can´t count me to this group.

I am not looking for advice really, mayb someone has a hint maybe not, but I just wanna know if anybody is having the same issues...

    Advice needed: Byzantines VS Mayans

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:15 AM PDT

I am having trouble beating Mayan players as the Byzantines.

Against the combo of plumed archers + eagle warriors I can in theory answer with cataphracts + skirmishers.

The first problem is that while cataphracts absolutely tear through eagles, plumed archers kill them too quickly.

The second problem (which compounds on the first) is that it's a pain to micro the skirmishers to avoid wasting ammo on the eagles.

Suggestions? Any advice for me? Is this a case for the byzantine paladins? Siege rams? Something else entirely?

    Thanks in advance!

Battle of Africa 2 - Overview & Information

I will try to keep this post updated with all relevant information throughout the entire event.

There is under two days remaining until the registration deadline for Battle of Africa 2 has been reached. If you think you and your team have a chance of qualifying as one of the top sixteen teams, go over to the registration thread on AoEZone to register right away!
    https://www.aoezone.net/threads/boa2-registration.164418/

If you're just interested in checking out the teams that have already signed up, you can follow the link below. Here you'll find the current standings for the teams, updated hourly, until the registration deadline has been reached the 28th of April, 22.00 GMT.

And if this is the first time you've heard about Battle of Africa 2, then allow me to elaborate.
Battle of Africa 2 is hosted by MembTV and is the successor to the extremely popular team game tournament back in 2018. This event will help set the standard as the first significant team game tournament on Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. A tournament where the teams will be competing over multiple weeks to earn a portion of the fantastic 20.000$ prize pool thanks to the incredible sponsors that have helped make this happen - namely Microsoft, Oracle455, PkZ and MembTV himself.

Battle of Africa 2 will take place between the 16th of May and 7th of June. It will feature a qualification stage with sixteen teams - and the main stage, which will include the best eight teams in the world. In terms of maps, you will get to experience some great old classics from the original Battle of Africa, as well as some new exciting environments to shake things up.

All the games will be streamed live on https://www.twitch.tv/membtv as well as other interested streamers. If you are interested in becoming an official streamer for the tournament, make sure to read the handbook, join our Discord server and contact me directly (not on Reddit, read below) for more information.

    Rules & Settings

The extended details, as well as rules and settings, can be found in the official tournament handbook found below. However, to give a rough idea - all the games will be played as 3v3, fixed positions will be enabled, and slinging will be banned entirely until the slinging player reaches the Imperial Age. The teams will compete in three different stages, the qualification stage, the group stage and lastly the final stage, which consists of a quarterfinal, semifinal and an incredible best of nine grand final.

    Download the handbook here:
    https://www.aoezone.net/threads/boa2-handbook.164413/

    More Information & Contact

More information about the tournament can be found on AoEZone and our official Discord server. You're also more than welcome to contact me (Chrazini) directly if you have questions, suggestions or feedback. Contact information can be found on the first page in the handbook. You can also use the Discord server to get a hold of us more immediate. Thank you!

Is less than 30 fps a dealbreaker on AOE2DE?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:24 AM PDT

Hey guys, when I play ranked games, my fps is between 20-30. In the late game, it's more like 15-25 fps. Does it make it harder for me to improve and beat stronger opponents online?

If the answer is yes, what kind of laptops can run this game smoothly? FYI, I am using a Surface Pro 4 (the i5 2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, HD 520 graphics model, released late 2015).

One of the problems I face with my tablet laptop is that I think it thermal throttles. At first, I thought my laptop had lower fps in the late game because more things had to be rendered. But when I run the benchmark test after a game, my score is actually below 1000 (as opposed to above 1000 before I start playing. Then I touch my tablet and it's incredibly hot.\)

Is it just me or are low elo players really good?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:06 AM PDT

I lost a couple of 1v1's and am now sitting at 900 elo on DE. I know how to execute build orders, have a decent economy, rush, lure boars properly, quickwall, i know counters ect. but i don't manage to go back up to 1000 (yes, i've only played like 6 or 7 matches since but still). Now i don't mean to say i'm good but i really feel like i play quite properly for the casual that i am. Has the playerbase improved so much in DE or is it just me?

Hidden mode in custom games (don't display player names)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:20 AM PDT

Is there any option of an Hidden mode where you cannot see who's who? For example, If I'm playing with my friends, we all already know how others play and how well each one plays. This affects the game since the beginning and I have no problem with it, just that sometimes it would be nice to start a game from a blank state.

I was wondering if there is a mode where you appear anonymous to others and vice-versa.

    Impossible to beat Hard AI

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Does anyone else experience this? I can win comfortably on Moderate, but with Hard I just cannot do it. I reach Feudal Age around 10-11 mins, then Castle before 20. I send Knight rush and pick off villagers around a woodline/good area. I kill a good number of villagers, and keep pushing with more knights. But the AI just keeps producing skirmishers/pikemen and magically seems to catch up so next time I reach their base they have an army of 40+ and it just snowballs from there. It's so frustrating how the AI produces villagers like clockwork even when they are garrisonning and I'm picking them off yet somehow they manage to be undefeatable and rebound with even more spam. Does anybody experience this or have a good way to actually win? It's really really frustrating how big the difference is between moderate and Hard. I start find but somehow even though I'm the one attacking, I can simply not finish them off...

After more than 10 years of playing this game, I now realize why I love it so much

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:56 PM PDT

Most of the time, I'm just as happy when I lose as when I win.

Seems strange, but its good knowing the person who beat you probably loves the game just as much if not more than you.

Sorry for this dumb post but I felt like sharing.

Discussion thread - Live spectating on ranked ladder - DE

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:01 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Last night, one of my friend wanted to learn tips in order to become a better player so I told him to come spectate my 2v2 ranked games... soon, I realized the spectator mode gives you the game in LIVE. He ended up giving me information otherwise impossible to know (ex: ''he's coming at you with militia but he's not upgrading to man at arms so you should be good''). I also realized I was cheating on a ranked game...

I wanted to know the community's opinion on this. What do you think about the ability to live spectate ladder games? I come from League of Legends where a 3 minutes delay in spectator mode prohibits cheating. I think it's even more important in a RTS game like AoE2.

I assume streamers don't give too much thoughts about it as it is basically like stream sniping, but what about the rest of the community... I'm a 1050 ELO player, so do I just assume my opponent is cheating if I see ''Spectators: 1'' on the top of my screen? Clearly, it isn't fair play...

I also think it's okay to live spectate in lobbies and custom games, so that casters can get the game as it is played out... but in ranked ladder?? ...

Although, live spectating is really helpful to explain your friends strategies and gameplay while you're doing it at the same time, the way I initially intended to use it last night. I'm no cheater in any competitive games so I kind felt bad about it (I lost the game though so all fine I guess).

    Thoughts?

Extreme Ai scouts with herdables. Impressive

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 04:30 PM PDT

Is there anyway to spectate a game as it's being played? I mean, without watching from the beginning and fast-forwarding the whole match till you catch up or you get to the end?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I just want to enjoy a match knowing that it's happening in that moment. Also, sometimes I'm just curious about the endgame builds and can't be bothered to go through the whole thing.

    Building Placement is Important!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:21 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm not a pro, just getting better but I hate losing games that just because of how my teammates placed their buildings. Two major problems are:

    1. Placing markets too close to teammates
    2. Placing buildings all around with tiny spaces in between so leaving no space for anyone else to build military (this also blocks trade carts' movement)

Both points lose all teammates a lot of gold, and almost no one gives a s... about that. It really sucks when people have so good economies and everything else but just careless building placement loses the whole game.. We could win easily otherwise

What are your thoughts on this? Also it would be good if someone on YouTube etc. covered this topic. I can't find any discussions about this online. People need to care more about this!

    Thanks
