I've been playing since 1999 and you wouldn't know it by how I play. But here goes nothing. Get an inside look at why i stink so badly at this game.

If the game lasts 10 minutes, ill consider it a win.

I really have no business being in this tournament, but what the hell.

advice for ex-diamond SC2 zerg player moving to AOE2?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:22 AM PDT

hey everyone. so i played starcraft 2 regularly for the better part of the last decade - i was a zerg main and my SR was diamond level. i'm kinda tired of it now and want to get in to AOE2. i played AOE2 as a kid, but coming back to it now i feel pretty lost.

my question is basically this - is there anything i learned in SC2 that will be valuable to playing AOE2, or should i just throw away everything i know and start from the beginning? i've tried a couple builds but after playing a few multiplayer games it's quite clear to me that i'm rather clueless about how this game is played in pvp.

also, if there are any civs that are kinda zerg-like (aggressive, reactionary, macro-based), i'd love to try them. although i am pretty sure the Goths fit that and they are trash. but maybe it wouldn't matter at my ELO? i also do like rush and "all-in" playstyles, so that works, too. thanks for any advice.

    Civ Concept: The Tarascans

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 07:54 PM PDT

I wanted to share a civ concept I made recently. It's based around the main rivals of the Aztec Empire, that is the Tarascans or Purépecha.

It's all loosely based on knowledge of the pre-columbian Tarascan state, such as the fact that they were one of very few peoples in Mesoamerica to use metal (copper, and some bronze) tools and the extensive defensive system they built along their border with the Aztecs.

    ==== TARASCANS ====

    Skirmisher Civilization

    • Mill, Lumber Camp and Mining Camp technologies' food cost replaced by wood cost (20% less total resources).
    • Skirmishers have +1 attack in the Feudal Age; +2 in the Castle Age; +3 in the Imperial Age.
    • Mills, Lumber Camps and Mining Camps can be garrisoned (10) by villagers.
    • Free Masonry and Architecture.

Unique Unit: Keriti (Armor-piercing ranged unit).

    Unique technologies:

    • Metallurgy (450F, 400G): Eagle Warriors get +2 (melee) armor.

    • Achátis (950W, 750G): Keritis reimburse 20% of their cost when they die.

Team Bonus: Outposts 25% more HP.

*The Tarascans is a new world civilization designed to be a little slower to start up than the other ones, but that makes it up by being solid defensively without losing much of the edge that make new world civs so strong.

Their "eco" bonus makes it easier to upgrade your economy and while it makes their early Feudal a bit more of a struggle it vastly improves their Fast Castle and boom by moving the cost of mill, lumber and mining camp techs over to only wood. Just thought this was an interesting bonus, so no context to give here.

Their main military unit is the skirmisher and so their main military bonus gives skirms higher attack. This bonus is very strong as it makes their skirms effectively as strong as archers starting in Castle Age. For this reason they are the only new world civ without Arbalest too. This is a nod to the atlatl, a very popular weapon in Mesoamerica.

As for the "utilities", mills, lumber and mining camps are garrisonable, allowing for better defense against rushes. They also get free Masonry and Architecture, which helps the resistance of their buildings. And also, their team bonus gives outposts more HP. This is a nod to their fierce defense against the Aztecs, against who they had to build extensive fortifications to protect their lands from their incursions.*

    Keriti (35W, 45G)

Elite Upgrade: 850 Food, 675 Gold (Research Time: 45s)

    Creation time: 15s (11s)

    Health: 35(40)

    Attack: 2(3), Pierce, Javelin.

    Armor: 0/1(0/1)

    Range: 5(5); Min. Range: 1(1)

    Rate of Fire: 3.05 (3.05)

    Accuracy: 90% (90%)

    Speed: 0.96 (0.96)

    Attack bonuses: None.

The Keriti (Tarascan for Warrior) is a riff on the armor-piercing mechanic introduced with the Leitis but given to a ranged unit instead. This unit is deceptively strong, with a low base attack and minimum range just like a skirmisher but given that it never loses attack power to armor it becomes significantly more powerful the more technologies you stack onto it. Combined with a relatively low cost and fast creation time, this unique unit can fill in the role of ranged support for the Tarascans handily. It's fairly strong against melee units and can deal with (counter-intuitively) skirmishers and rams, but they should still be weak to other ranged units and onagers, pierce armor notwithstanding.

Finally, their unique technologies are nods to their metalworking prowess (compared to the rest of Mesoamerica anyways), and their staunchly defensive abilities. Metallurgy makes their eagles beefier in melee combat while Achátis improves their unique unit's cost-effectiveness in a special way that would (hopefully) see more use than with Saracen monks. >_>

TECH TREE (Lists the misses, otherwise it says "None")

    Barracks: None.

Archery Range: Arbalest, Cavalry Archer, Hand Cannoneer, Parthian Tactics.

Stable: All of it. And the building itself (New World Civ, remember?).

Dock: Shipwright, Heavy Demo Ship, Cannon Galleon.

Siege Workshop: Siege Onager, Heavy Scorpion, Bombard Cannon.

    Castle: Hoardings, Sappers.

    Monastery: Heresy, Printing Press, Ilumination.

Blacksmith: Cavalry Scale Barding, Cavalry Chain Mail, Cavalry Plate Barding, Archer Ring Armor.

    University: Heated Shot, Bombard Tower.

    Market: Guilds.

    Mill: Crop Rotation.

    Lumber Camp: None.

    Mining Camp: Stone Shaft Mining.

    Town Center: None.

So, tell me what you think about it! Open to suggestions, and critiques.

League rankings ELO boundaries AOE 2 DE

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 07:07 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I recently got into Age of Empires and have played my first 10 online games, finishing with 1071 ELO in silver. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could find information on the boundaries on how much I need to improve to get to the next rank.

Also is it the case that no one cares about this rank in this game, but rather only look at the ELO? I have had trouble finding anything about it online so it seems strange.

    Thanks for any help

Need some civ advice for ranked

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:45 AM PDT

Got AoE2:DE recently and am getting started with ranked.

There is like a million different civs and I'm looking for some advice on which one might best fit my playstyle.

My strategy right now is to go castle age ASAP (always), then either attack with knights immediately or expand to multiple TCs and >100 villagers, then attack with trebuchets.

I have not played many games against humans-- I get castle age consistently in <18min, but I can only beat the second hardest AI with saving/loading the game...

I'm most comfortable using cavalry or elephants, mixing in some swordsmen if the enemy makes too many pikes. I'm rarely using siege workshop units, Archers/skirmishers I use sometimes.

What might be a good civ for me to specialize in (good knights/good lategame)? It does not have to be S-tier in competitive play, I'm rather looking for something that fits my playstyle and is not too hard to learn.

Bulgars and Goths are civs that I played and liked so far. I strongly dislike the american factions because they lack cavalry.

Is there a way to disable having the ESC key open the main menu during game?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:42 AM PDT

There are literally zero use cases where I would want to go to the Main Menu during game play. Yet, the ESC key works as a way of deselecting units. Which means that if by change I double click ESC during game play, I may end up in the Main Menu, and even worse, I may by mistake click one of its buttons.

I glanced on the hotkeys page but I can't seem to find a way to remove this binding. Anyone with any suggestion?

    Low Elo forever

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 07:15 PM PDT

First off, I don't want to sound arrogant, and my point is by no means for complaining about people that won against me... In fact, many of the people that I played with and lost actually became my friends. With that out of the way, here is the deal:

I play AoE II (competively) for almost 3 years. I have 600 hours of AoE II (2013) on Steam. At least 300 hours, if you don't count custom scenarios.

My Elo on RM is 1428.

I play sometimes on Voobly as well.

My Elo on RM - Begginers is 1159, with 3 losses and 1 victory. My Elo on RM - 1v1 is 1449, with 9 losses and 0 victories.

I plan to buy DE soon but that isn't the point.

I get crushed everytime I play. I tried watching tutorials, watching pro games, watching my own games and seeing the mistakes. But I keep losing.

You would think I wanted tips, which I kind of do, but that isn't the point either. Because no matter how many tips I get I am going to lose regardlessly.

What I want is to know why is the skill ceiling so damn high? It is not the mechanic of the game or anything similar, it is just how many people call themselves noobs but know how to play pro-level strategies. I was knight rushed, archer rushed, tower rushed, and everyone who did those said that they were noobs. One of them even quickwalled and dodged mangonel shots. It is ridiculous how hard it is to beat anyone online. The so called noobs know builds, rushes, everything. I would go far to say that out of 100 AoE II "noobs", about 5 are actual noobs. Yesterday, I decided to play some more voobly games, as I was mostly playing on HD (2013). I tried not calling myself noob, because i didn't want to pick unfair battles with noobs that started playing a week ago. So I tried on Medieval Siege. My ass got kicked (9 losses, as stated above). So I MOVED BACK to New Player Lobby, and won once, against an actual noob (I felt bad for him... He was on New Player lobby yet has gone with someone that played for more than 2 years).

The water drop however came when the last one I played with said he started playing AoE II a week ago, yet knew how to quickwall and dodge mangonel shots with crossbows. That blew my mind. How can someone know all of that in week?? If he wasn't lying, then I might just be the biggest AoE II noob in history, and destined to stay at low elo.

Well, I think I might be wrong. Maybe I can improve. Maybe I am just being super arrogant and subconsciously not trying to improve. So, for that I am going to leave my last games on Voobly here if anyone wants to see them. I am EmperorWorm in those games.

    https://www.voobly.com/match/view/21704091

    https://www.voobly.com/match/view/21704091

    https://www.voobly.com/match/view/21704311

    https://www.voobly.com/match/view/21706870

^ (this is the only one I won) ^

    https://www.voobly.com/match/view/21707472

If you have any tips, I don't have faith they will work, but leave them anyway. As I said earlier, I might be wrong. I hope someone knows what I am talking about, noobs not being actual noobs. I hope there is some kind of "super noob lobby" on DE for actual noob players that have no idea of anything in the game, because if not then they are gonna be crushed for at least a few months before starting to win one or two out of 10, which means many aren't going to continue playing.

Is there a Wiki for the competitive AoE 2 scene, like how it is with other games?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:04 PM PDT

A lot of competitive games right now, i.e. League of Legends and DOTA 2, have Wikis which provide information about their game's competitive scenes, as in players, teams, casters, and tournament information. DOTA 2 on Liquipedia is an example. Does AoE 2 have a dedicated Wiki for this, or is the information still only on sites like AoEZone?

AOE2 DE blank screen on Ubuntu

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:40 AM PDT

Hi all, I am facing a bit of a problem in running AOE2 DE on my system with Ubuntu 18.04 on steam.

ISSUE: The game starts, shows the logo and then the screen turns black. I can move around the AOE cursor, but nothing happens on clicking, using the keyboard.

    My system Config-

Nvidia GF117M 2GB graphics card (using Nvidia 390 driver), 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
    Proton Version is 5

I followed the instructions on this post-
    https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/dwuplr/how_to_run_age_of_empires_2_definitive_edition_on/

I have tried renaming the movies folder to something else. Did not work. Then I tried renaming the files in the movies folder. That also did not work. I have updated the dll file mentioned in the link as well.
Please help me out, as I would very much like to enjoy this game and join the online community.

for 3v3 and 4v4 AoE2:DE is the best RTS game out there. change my mind.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 07:54 PM PDT

I could accept that for 1v1 SC2 has more weight in the 1v1 games.

But it seems like age is a team game. we have team bonus with every civ, the maps are huge and you can flank, get back and push.

    In SC2 the 3v3 and 4v4 frankly feel like a 1v1 with supply 800.

Saturday Balance discussion: Overlapping Civilization bonuses/unique techs

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:37 AM PDT

In this Saturday Balance discussion, I want to discuss about civilizations that have bonuses and unique techs that "overlap" with each other. When I mean "overlap", I mean civ bonuses and unique techs that have almost the same functions and bonuses for particular units (i.e. bonus attack, HP, cost reduction, etc.). Some noticeable examples include:

    • Both Byzantines and Berbers having cheaper camels with their civilization bonuses
    • Both Magyars and Berbers having cheaper light cavalry with their civilization bonuses
    • Both Goths and Byzantines have cheaper Halberdiers
    • Vietnamese, Franks, and Turks have civ bonuses or unique techs that give more HP to their cavalry arcchers.

With all that mind, there are probably other examples in this list, but in terms of gameplay balance, would you say it is perfectly okay for some civilizations to have certain civilization bonuses and unique techs that "overlap" each other in terms of certain bonuses as long as they have different functionality with them?

Let's take a look at the Byzantine civilization bonuses and compare them to the Berber's and Goths as an example. The Byzantines have a civilization bonus of cheaper units, specifically camels, skirmishers, and spearmen; whereas Berbers and Goths have a more generalized cheaper units of a specific niche of units (in the cases of Berbers and Goths, cheaper cavalry and infantry respectfully). The Byzantines focus their cheaper units are counter units, while Goth's focus is primarily overwhelming your opponent with spamming infantry in the lategame (which is reflected with their unique techs) and the Berbers have a strong cavalry centric focus with a heavy emphasis on camels (which is also reflected on their unique unit and their Imperial Age tech where camels regenerate HP). True to this, the Byzantines also have a diverse tech tree and miss out on a couple of upgrades for their camels and spearmen (Bloodlines and Blast Furnace).

So let's say there is a civilization that have a civilization bonus that have cheaper monks, yet it conflicts with the Portuguese gold discount on units. Would you say the civilization bonus of cheaper monks would be acceptable of the said civilization have several other bonuses and niche that would allow them to do a monk rush?
