    Having trouble with online connection.

I can't really join games online, only host them. I tried trouble shooting but overall gets a little more technical than my knowledge of pc's goes. I love this game and haven't played since middle school (in college now). So, if someone is godly and all knowing wants to help a lad get back into an old favorite via discord call you'd be a real one. Please, help me believe there are still good people online.

    The Campaigns

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:34 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have had so much spare time that I managed to play through all the campaigns in the game, and decided to write down my thoughts on each campaign. Feel free to drop readig his post, but I figured if anyone wanted to discuss what they felt abou the Age of Empires III campaigns this would be a good place to do it. Spoilers if you care about that stuff!

    Blood - Morgan Black

Adressing the issu most people have with this game's campaigns: I did not mind the fantastical element in this one. The strating levels on Malta get a bit tutorial-y at times, but they implement a lot of 'mechanics' that we see later (defend missions, freeing units from stockades, etc.). Morgan is a strong character as well, and the surrounding cast with Lizzie the Pirate and Sahin the Falcon works well. Once all 3 teams up for the final level it feels pretty awesome. Once Morgan comes to the new world, I feel like this scenario really captures the exploration feel of the game. We are discovering the New World and it's dangers with him. The final level is one of the harder ones, but great fun. The unit selection for the Knights of St. John are a bit boring and simple, but that might be the point since the period is set in the discovery/colonial age.

    Personal score - 6/10

    Ice - John Black

This was my favourite of the Black family campaigns. The New England aesthetic is a personal favourite of mine, and John+Kaneynke are fun heroes to play with. The fact that you play as a mercenary company makes a lot of sense story-wise as to why you can be fighting with the French for one scenario and the British for the next. John Black's mercenaries have the best unit selection as well imo. They are basicaly Germany that can also train musketeers. The final level on this one is probably the hardest, since there is somuch going on and the Russians keep swarming you. he backdrop of the seven year's war is also a good one to play around with the mercenaries, and the fact that we get to meet George Washington. This scenario really belnded the fictional Circle story with the real historical events the most elegantly.

    Personal score - 9.5/10

    Fire - Nathaniel Black

I am doing these in the order of the Black family. The whole John+Kaneynke's siter (can't remember her name) was explored in the Ice campaign, and they end up with a kid. This to me feels like the developers saw the backlash from the vanilla campaigns being to fictional, and so Nathaniel's campaign is mostly him fighting in several famous battles from the American Revolution. As a non-american myself, this feels a bit too on-the-nose sometimes. One scenario, your first objective is "Cross the Delaware" with George Washington. I thought it hilarious to just leave George on the other side and have Nathaniel and the militia go accross and raze the Hessian camps. I also remember thinking Kuechler (the Hessian commander) was a Circle member but it would seem that storyline was dropped completely in favour of something much more historical. All in all there is a lot of great, standalone scenraions here. My personal favourite was the one where you have to build forts to take control of a British trade route.

    Personal score - 8/10

    Steel - Amelia Black

This felt like a nice closing chapter to me. The Industrial age setting is fun to play with, and the fact that you are technically playing as a railroad company being protected by Americans to build trade routes sort of works. The last mission almost felt a bit too easy for me, since your Cuban allies are the ones fighting the Circle while yo just build up. Beaumont was so badass to me, like the fact that his hero in the game one-shots any unit by throwing his knife. I also learned the hard way just how though the Boneguard units really are, they take soo many shots to kill. The random meeting with Bolivar felt a bit more forced than with Washington in John's chapter, but it was a fun and challenging mission freeing the Spanish villages with him. I thought it was fun Amelia named it 'the falcon company', probably after Sahin who helped out her great-great grandfather. Seeing Morgan return as the Old Coot was mindblowing and fun, great little detail there.

    Personal score - 6/10

    Shadow - Chayton Black

The first thing I remember from this was the score having so much steel guitar and cheesy western sound effects. The first two missions where you play as the Americans are pretty boring, as you can only train musketer and skirmishers and not do much exiting. Once Chayton turns Sioux it is much more fun, and it gives you that cool underdog-feel. Chayton also looks badass once he turns Sioux, and the confrontation with the Sheriff where he literally kills him in a western-duel was cool. The whole exploring the western front themes were pretty fun to play with as well, and the last mission felt like a much more rewarding end than the Amelia one.

    Personal score - 8.5/10

    Japan

Now we get to the Asian Dynasties campaigns. The Japan campaign feels more like actual games, where you play against an opponent 1v1. The first mission was pretty fun attacking the castle, and from there on the whole war aesthetic works really well. You also play as the actual warring factions, unlike in the Black storylines where you are more of a spectator, which makes more sense when you roll our 100 men armies to attack your foes. Togukawa and Mototada are also the only campaign characters available in normal skirmishers, fun fact! The way they speak sometimes sound a bit cartoon-ish to me, with constant proverbs and talks of 'honour' and 'pride', but a fun introduction to the Asian civs for sure!

    Personal score - 7/10

    China

This was....interesting. First of the way the characters speak with the thick accents threw me off a bit. Playing as the Imperial Fleet was ok enough, but once they land in the new world all the missions felt like the same 'rescue all the sailors from the Aztec' vibe. The Lao Chen character is sometimes hilarious, running around bare-chested with his wierd falcon punch ability that yeets 10 units at a time halfway accross the map. The whole twist where the Chinese Joffrey (AKA taunt 33 guy) for some reason has become the leaders of the Aztec was wiers. Him standing a top an Aztec pyramid and screaming "I AM THE EMPEROR" was so bad it was hilarious.

Personal score - 3/10 (3 points awarded just for the falcon punch alone)

    India

Ice was my favourite Black campaign, and this is by far the best Asian one. The cutscenes feel much more vibrant in this one for some reason, and the soundtrack is great. Colonel Edwardson was very stereotypical, comparing killing Rajputs to "hunting fox back in Norfolk". Just like China and Japan this felt very over the top, but in a much more enjoyable way once you actually revolt against the British. Nanib is a fantastic character, especially once he joins the Sepoys. Also his morale boost ability felt a bit overpowered in clutch situations. The whole rebelling against the oppressor story mirrored the Sioux and Iroquois chapters well, but India did it even better by adding Elephants. The last mission in this one was my favourite of all the scenarios, since there were lots of fun stuff to do and unique units to use in combat.

    Personal score - 10/10

So, enough from me: What did r/aoe3 think of the campaigns?
