Paladin is once again the most exclusive upgrade in the game

    https://preview.redd.it/kpv2ryo3y3w41.png?width=256&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a645137310a785da2362275249bd1d40e87b389

The paladin and Siege Onager upgrades have been in a continuous fight since AoK for the spot of most exclusive technology, each being available to only a few select civs (along with BBT, but the latter has become a bit less exclusive with each expansion). From AoK until AoF, SO were more rare than paladins, but this was switched around in African Kingdoms and remained true in Rise of Rajas. With The Last Khans, the two technologies were tied being available to 10 civs each. With Bulgarians losing access to it, it drops to 9 for Paladin.

A few stats about the triforce of most rare techs in AoE2 :

    • Paladin, 9 civs (26%) : Byzantine, Celts, Cumans, Franks, Huns, Lithuanians, Magyars, Persians, Spanish, Teutons
    • Siege Onager, 10 civs (29%) : Aztecs, Bulgarians, Celts, Cumans, Ethiopians, Koreans, Malians, Mongols, Saracens, Slavs, Teutons
    • Bombard Tower, 12 civs (34%) : Byzantine, Chinese, Italians, Koreans, Lithuanians, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish, Tatars, Teutons, Turks, Vietnamese

29% of the civs (10 : Berbers, Britons, Burmese, Goths, Incas, Indians, Japanese, Khmer, Mayans, Vikings) have access to neither of these techs.

51% of the civs (18 : Aztecs, Bulgarians, Chinese, Ethiopians, Franks, Huns, Italians, Magyars, Malay, Malians, Mongols, Persians, Portuguese, Saracens, Slavs, Tatars, Turks, Vietnamese) have access to exactly one of these techs.

Only 20% (7 civs) have access to 2 or more :

    • Paladin + SO : Celt, Cumans
    • Paladin + BBT : Byzantine, Lithuanian, Spanish
    • SO + BBT : Koreans

And if you did your math right, there is one civ left, the only civ in the game with access to both Paladin, Siege Onager and Bombard Tower : Teutons.

tl;dr Paladins are fun. Make Paladins.

AoE2 tournaments really need dedicated observers.

    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:30 AM PDT

The main thing that gripes me about watching aoe2 is the subpar camera work. Now I don't want to throw shade at our casters as it is really hard to commentate and do analysis while keeping focussing on the minimap and all the multitasking.

In SC2 dedicated observers elevated the viewing experience to another level with some of those observers like Funka and Mapu even getting to almost the same level of fame as the casters themselves. It is just such a huge difference!

Now AoE2 hasn't been in the spotlight for long, but I would really suggest to look into adding observers for tournaments while the scene is growing so strongly. It is probably the next best investment tournament organizers could do.

    PLEASE fix PATHING

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:03 AM PDT

We have had several major updates since the original release. The pathing has gone from OK to BAD to OK and now BAD again. I just watched 3 minutes of highlights from Red Bull Wololo and saw scouts stuttering and eagle warriors bugging out.

THESE ARE HIGHLIGHTS, the most important parts of the games shouldn't be influenced by bugs.

The same is true of the servers and drops, but lets try to fix one at a time here. Can we lobby the Devs to ignore all the other issues (bugged maps/celebration events/balance changes/etc) and have them focus 100% of their attention on fixing the pathing in this game?

I know I left the game for a bit to play the freaking Sims because I was so frustrated with pathing and servers. My playing partner has quit entirely.

[Meta] Can we set the recommended sorting in the tournament thread to 'new' to encourage discussion?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:22 AM PDT

    see title.

It's a minor thing, that really helped the acceptance of such threads in the SC2 subreddit, so I would suggest to employ it here as well.

RB Wololo has been the most entertaining start to a tournament I have seen!

Really liking the high intensity games, civilization diversity, casting, and low downtown between series! What are you liking about the tournament?

Ok, how do I get this x256 cheat?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:36 AM PDT

I'm sorry, I'm a new player, and I don't wanna miss out on this fun new cheat! What are the "challenges" that I've been hearing about that supposedly unlock this, and how do I do them?

Looking for a monk to Wololo me into a better player

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:29 AM PDT

Let me pre-phase by saying, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. My problem is I am not very good at this game and I am hoping to find anyone who would be willing to help make me a better player. Would anyone be interested in playing some 1v1 or helping me improve? I play at night around 8-12CST and I have been playing ladder style games.

Some backstory, I have played AOE on and off since the original came out on CD so overall I understand the game from a general perspective. I've been watching several streamers play (Daut, Nili, MB, etc to learn what is possible at the highest levels. I have also played starcraft at Diamond/Master ranks for many seasons so the overall RTS play is not new to me. What I am lacking is the decision tree style responses or counters based on the information my scouts find out. For example, if they start sending mass crossbows, I need to transition my next build phase to counter. I'm sure there are other things I could be doing to improve (better hotkeys, not upgrading everything, etc).

That said, I do not plan to go pro or anything like that I just enjoy playing games at a higher skill level than I am currently. Also, many of my game friends have moved on to other games so it can get a little repetitive playing ranked games without any feedback on what could have been improved outside of what I am seeing with my own eyes.

Graphics look bugged, does anyone else have this as well?

After not having played for a while, I started the game again and noticed that my graphics seem off. Does anyone else have this issue, or knows how to fix it?

Do you also have this feeling micro transactions will be implemented in the game soon?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:53 AM PDT

Nobody likes micro transactions, but it's true that devs need money to work everyday and update a live game as often as they are doing, and I've got a feeling they are trying to accustom us to skins for units with all these events. They probably expect a 20yo community will not to be too enthusiastic about micro transactions being pushed too quickly.

The only way I could be happy about it is if there adding new civilizations for a small price, like other games are adding heroes or operators. It rejuvenates the metagame and adds positive new content.

What do you think about the question of MTX?
