    AoE2 DE Stats

Yesterday I was bored and I pulled of some data from https://aoe2.net/ API. I calculated a lot of things using the data for the 1vs1 and team ratings ladders only but since I want to keep this post short I'm going to show you the most interesting facts.

The first image shows us the relation between the team rating and 1vs1 rating of the aoe2 de playerbase. The 45º degree line splits the playerbase in two groups. Those below the dashed line are players with a 1vs1 rating higher than team rating. Not surprisingly almost everybody falls above the curve i.e. more team rating than 1vs1 rating.

I fitted a simple linear model which gives us the following relation:

    TR = 1.47*IR - 137 ( R-Squared: 0.736, p-value < 0.0001 ) TR: Team Rating; IR: 1vs1 Rating

which is not bad but in my opinion a quantile regression should be more accurate in this scenario since the underlying hypothesis of a linear regression are not met. The team rating saturates for high 1vs1 rating players and the variance explodes but nonetheless I think is a fairly good approximation. /EndOfMaths

The next picture is a density plot but this time I've added the people that has no games in any of the two ladders so the people that has only played team games appears hugging the y-axis and the "solo" players with no team games played are displayed at the bottom. I've set the rating to 0 to display them somewhere if anyone has a better idea pls feel free to illustrate me.

It is clear that the majority of players falls in two categories. Only teamplayers with a rating between 1000-1400 as you can clearly see the peak in density and a smaller group of lone-wolfs that only play in the 1vs1 ladder with ratings between 800-1100.

\* Recall that this people can play unranked games but I have not taken those games into account.*

The last picture is the distribution of 1vs1 rating. A nice normal distribution as expected. You can check it and draw insights by yourselves but I've prepared a table for you with the most representative values:

Percentiles. ( % Percentage of people with equal or less rating than the value )

    • 10.02%: 792
    • 20.95%: 865
    • 30.10%: 922
    • 40.05%: 972
    • 50.01: 1026 <----- 1000 is the starting point so the ELO inflation at this moment and range is 26 points.
    • 60.16%: 1072
    • 70.11%: 1128
    • 80.10: 1203
    • 90.03%: 1316
    • 95.02%: 1423
    • 98.00%: 1565
    • 99.00%: 1680
    • 99.9%: 2040

It is funny, at least for me, that the general current of thought is to define everybody below 2k as "trash", "plebs", "potatos" or what not but the reality is that anybody above 1550++ is top 2% and in fact are very very good players. I mean even people with 1300 ELO is already top 10% which is virtually better than the majority of the playerbase.

If you would like to see something else maybe I can create another post. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    ELO Rating

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 04:18 AM PDT

I would like there to be a way to turn on my ELO rating so I can see it on the matchmaking section while waiting on a rated match. Also, I wish that I could see the ELO of my opponent before the match starts. I know I could tab out of the game to get this information but I wish it was there in game. Your rating score should have a more prominent appearance in game. Kind of like in online chess you can always view your ELO and the ELO of your opponent. Perhaps not make it visible during the actual game but perhaps visible right before the game starts after you are paired.

    Question about Conversion

“I fast castle on every map”

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:06 PM PDT

Started playing again (HD version) after a 10-15 year hiatus. Need help.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:36 PM PDT

Just looking for some tips to improve my efficiency, especially early in the game.

Order of operations, location of farms, mills, mines. Order of resource collection and when to transition to different resources.

Ideal number of workers to have by each stage.

Should I rush or delay getting to any particular ages?

    Favorite civs and why

Not really a fan of rushing even though it works.

Are there any helpful posts or links to read on this kind of stuff?

    New Tech Idea

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I've been thinking about the anarchy tech for a lot of reasons lately. I know it is currently pretty irreverent and not used in the game today. So I was trying to come up with improvements to it. I think in order to get a more historically accurate version of anarchy, the technology should allow you to do two things:

    1. your units are now allowed to attack your own units and buildings. This will give the tech a lot more realism and become more historically accurate.
    2. you can also now attack your allies as well. This would be helpful in team games so that you don't have to switch your team members from ally to enemy in order to attack them. It could really swing team games with this change.

I also think in order to make the technology become more viable we should reduce the cost by 100 gold. In all honesty I have no clue what anarchy currently does or how much it costs.

    Ideal Monitor?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:41 AM PDT

Yes ACCM and other pros have reached pro level using a laptop, but what would be the ideal monitor Size? Resolution? Curved/Flat?

The bigger the better seems obvious but then the minimap is further away from the middle of the screen.

I believe resolution is capped at 1080p right?

Would a curved monitor affect raw gameplay mechanics in anyway?

Any idea what monitors the pros use?

    Turks vs heavy cavarly+pikes

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:59 AM PDT

Does anyone have a reliable answer to this? I just can't wrap my head in how one playing Turks is supposed to counter this in early/mid castle. if you make camels they get destroyed really fast by pikes and unless you have pro lvl micro I don't see how one would target all the Pike's with crossbows if they are mingled with the knights.

How to beat hard AI in team games?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:54 AM PDT

Hey all, as the title says me and my friends are struggling against the hard AI in team games. Generally when it's 3v3.

They always just seem to steam role one of us at a time and we're finding it hard to adequately defend that player and attack at the same time.

Any tips would be really welcome!

    Can you rename your replays?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Double clicking replays the game and right click does nothing. I'm rather confused. Surely this is possible? I'd like to know the ones worth re-watching.

Also, if someone knows, are the replays automatically deleted when you have enough of them?

(EDIT - I was gonna fix it but it still works)
