What would it take to make water fun? [Discussion]

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 04:52 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I know, no changes like this will be made, this is just for the sake of discussion.
I guess water never was supposed to be the main focus of the game, but just have a supplementary function as additional options, and I do think on maps like Nomad, and golden swamp it works really well that way. It changes up the game play and gives you additional options.

But then you have Island maps, just completely dominated by water, where just the same unit is spammed over and over, until someone does not have any ressources anymore. Only times this really is changed up, is if someone manages to land on the other island early. But that rarelly happens.

So on land the unit are extremely variable, whereas on water you basically only have the equivalent of farmers, Cav archers, Camel Riders, Bombard cannons and well demo ships (actually useful flaming camels?).

So what would it have taken to make water only battles actually interesting to play? Would it be enough to add a ranged counter to Galleys (equivalent to skirms or mangonel), or would it need more than that? Maybe an additional production building even?

How would you describe AoE2 to a person that's never heard of it?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:34 AM PDT

How would you briefly tell a person what the game is about? I feel like something like "amazing RTS" is kind of bland and doesn't honestly capture the whole game for what it really is. You want to tell them something that shows them how cool the strategy component is, the amazing micro and macro management possible, and simply the uniqueness of it compared to how lots of other games are today. There's also the scenario editor, which gives you infinite possibilities for greatness.

I've honestly been struggling to come up with a concise explanation when telling people about it and just grasp for comparisons to other games (which doesn't work well); does someone here have any words that can effectively capture the marvel of this game?

Here is how to deal with Burmese double Castle Arambai on Arena

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:26 AM PDT

The double castle Arambai buildorder for Burmese on Arena is a very powerful way to demolish your opponents walls and TCs in no time.

Here I demonstrate a way how you can defend yourself against this strategy:

    1. Predict the play. Is your opponent picking burmese on arena? First indicator.
    2. Scout the castle/castles. Is your opponent building two castles in his base? Its almost certain that he is going for fast Arambai aggression now.
    3. Build a siege workshop and get 4-5 scorpions.
    4. Build a trap/dont let the Arambais flee.
    5. Shoot the Arambais with your scorpions.
    6. Profit.

Here you can see an example on how we absolutely demolished the Burmese player in a teamgame:

    Mid-game when to advance

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:38 AM PDT

I've not really played much aoe2 other than the campaigns before but I've started practicing build orders etc as I'm interested in starting multiplayer. I've been practicing quite a lot and have got my dark age and early feudal age pretty much nailed down against the hard AI. After this point however I find that I'm losing most of the games if I don't have the upper hand early in the fuedal age. My question here is really, in what situation should you aim to advance to the castle age when you're creating units in fuedal? I often find myself second to the castle age and either winning due to the fact I have a bigger army or losing due to getting out-teched. I'm finding it hard to tell the difference in the game situations between these outcomes though. Are there any particular things to look out for that should make you think "I should stop building units and look to save for Castle age"?

    Cumans fast castle

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:08 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've started to play cumans and fell in love with stepplancers units. i love to play them, they are so strong and smooth

but is that relevant to do a cuman fast castle or should I always feudal boom while I pick cumans.

Btw, i'm pretty low elo (900 elo UwU)

Any old schoolers remember playing on the msn.com lobbies?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 05:08 PM PDT

Back in the early 2000s anyone remember playing aoe2 on the msn lobbies back in the day? Quite frankly that was a huge feat to have multiplayer lobbies like that on a web browser.

Anyways im back boys!! Just got the definitive addition. Time to get my butt kicked in some online.

Having difficulty stopping pike siege push

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 08:04 AM PDT

This is especially true against Goths with their infinite spearmen.

I try making my own siege, and can take out the enemy siege, but that's mostly just a 1 for 1 and they can just keep flooding pikemen since they're so cheap.

It's especially problematic if I was going for knights and don't have a crossbow mass.Scorpions die to mangonels, mangos get rushed down by pikes, all in all I just die.

After the nerf what are the best strategies for Cumans in Arabia 1v1?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:04 PM PDT

So I'd like to train with the cumans a bit because they seem to be somewhat unpredictable. They can do feudal boom or a feudal push with TC and rams. And the feudal boom seems to be a good counter to a scout rush which I was looking for.

Has anybody experience playing the cumans? What are your go to strategies and when do you use them?

Are feudal boom and ram push still viable strategies after the nerf? When should you go for a boom, when for a ram push?

Any comments on that are appreciated!

Suggestion to help players with bad internet

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:32 AM PDT

Howdy folks, im currently in AIT for the army and the only ISP we can get at the barracks has lag spikes pretty frequently throughout the day. In games like starcraft and wc3, it gives me 60 seconds to re-connect without a penalty which is more than enough time for the janky internet to come back. In AOE2DE, it seems to just disconnect me and give me a loss instantly instead of giving me a chance to re-connect and continue playing. The save game feature is nice but its ultimately useless when playing ranked 1v1's. Its pretty frustrating losing ladder points over something like this and i just thought i would vent on behalf of us players with bad connections
