The Game is Literally Playable Now

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:45 PM PDT

I know the past month was hard for many of us, myself included, but I am overall extremely happy with the newest patch, the games are suuuuper smooth now and I haven't had a single DC since the patch!

Awesome work by the devs, really appreciate it.

DO NOT play with players 'Genghiskhan89' and 'ThePatriot', they are making their own maps with extreme amount of resources on their side+4 more relics+extra villagers+5x more start resources + 50 mins treaty just so they can spam. SImple kids who cant even beat moderate AI so they do this instead

    Is this game worth buying?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:24 AM PDT

I love strategy games. I enjoy games like total war, EU4, WC3, and Bannerlord. I was wondering if this game is worth buying for me. What I like most about strategy games is building scenarios and watching units fight. I've only watched Spirit of the Law's videos on AoE2 and while I like the time period, he only really covers the multiplayer scene. Does this game have a thriving scenario/mod community or is it better if I stick to other games?

Fully upgraded Elite Mangudai vs Viking trash tsunami

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:07 AM PDT

If you could add a new unit, what would it be?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 05:56 AM PDT

A new unit, it could be an addition like Halberdier or Imperial Skirmisher, or things like Slinger, Turtle Ship and Flaming Camel.

I kind of want an upgrade to Hand Cannonneer, maybe Elite Hand Cannonneer. Make it very expensive, 1000F 800G, make it give +2 attack, +2 bonus attack against all infantry and +5 hp.

What do you guys would want?

Technology Tree should show the current civilization - Bug

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:54 PM PDT

So this is a relatively small feature- when I open the tech tree, it would make sense for me to already have the civilization that I'm playing shown to me on opening the tree.

    ---

I have some ideas that can be implemented.

( I wish I knew how to get the skills to implement these, even as mods to the game. If someone can point me towards how to create mods for AOE2 it would be great - I do know how to code )

In the drop down of the tech tree to choose civ, show only the civs that are being played in the current game. Maybe highlight the ones which are allies and enemies.

An insanely cool feature would be to be able to hold down a key to display the tech tree and on release the tech tree disappears. I think it would be an incredibly solid feature, especially with so many civilizations and tech spaces.

Another cool feature would be to have a compact civ tree to show what units / researches are available in a much smaller format so it's visible in one go, rather than a long, scroll tech tree.

Is it forbidden to steal sheep?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:42 PM PDT

I've had multiple games where I stole my opponents sheep and they got unreasonably mad and even resigned once. Is there some kind of unwritten rule against this? If so, why would Celts have the sheep-stealing bonus?

I think Aoe2 is to RTS, as tetris is to games with falling blocks.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Basically, the gameplay is perfect for the genre, and the long time players don't actually want any fancy changes.

You wouldn't try to change the gameplay of tetris to attract new users, because tetris is already the best falling-blocks game available. You'd be hesitant to add new blocks or funny colours, because the users like the currently available blocks and colours, and will continue to play with the available blocks and colours for another twenty years.

The tetris fanbase will always be loyal to regular old Tetris.

What you want when you play tetris is a regular, stable experience, where the buttons work as expected and application doesn't crash.

Maybe some QoL improvements. Some cool post game statistics. But the game itself, is basically perfect. Above all other things, just don't break it, and we'll be fine.

Will the devs add new civilizations/maps to DE?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:14 AM PDT

Hey, guys. Did the devs ever mention if they plan to add more content to the game, besides balancing and events? I'm just curious.

Advice for cavalry civs vs camel civs (~1200 elo)

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I've been maining Magyars recently and really enjoying the mobility and flexibility they have. I usually open scouts and try to stay aggressive where possible, either pressuring while teching to knights or transitioning to ranges. I've had some success, but I struggle a lot vs civs with access to camels. Even with a strong early game, the earliest batch of camels make me grind to a halt. I typically try to transition to cav archers/pikes, but feel like I lose all initiative during the tech switch, and have difficulty holding mid-game pushes of camels paired with skirms/siege.

What advice would you give for facing up against camel civs? Should I not even bother opening scouts? Make a faster transition to ranges? What is a good mid-game composition? And how does facing camels change win conditions for civs that are cavalry focused?

    Many thanks!

    Acronyms in this Subreddit

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:52 PM PDT

    Hi

New guy here. I sometimes have a hard time trying to read and understand some posts in this Subreddit because of the large number of acronyms I come across. Some I can figure out (e.g. TC Town center), but others leave me wondering what they mean. For the record, English is not my native language.

I was wondering if you guys would be so kind as to post random common acronyms used in this Subreddit that you can think of and what they mean to help a fellow AoE2 player make sense of it all.

    Thanks 👍👍

Age of Empires 2 Card Game

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:16 AM PDT

Hi - bought DE and started playing AoE again in lockdown - bringing back great memories... although I don't remember there being this many civs and I can only just scrape a win on hard!

Long story short, I also had the expandable card game which I've dug out, and am now looking for more of it.

    Can anyone here help?

    Thanks, Ash

I played 'Tazer' from the Age of Empires II OST on a virtual Shamizen, right next to a Developer of Warframe

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:42 PM PDT

I'm sick of toxic players that don't surrender when the game is clearly lost, and just hide in a corner with a couple of villagers. A game that I won by 0:48 lasts until 1:28 because of this. The worst thing is this guy has probably won some games by using this "tactic".

AI for AoE DE - Pharaon_DE

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:49 PM PDT

I tried to find a new AI for AoE DE and found the Pharaon_DE AI Mod. First I tested it in an AI Battle against the DE Extreme AI to see if it was worth trying and it destroyed the Extreme AI easily.

I read that it cheats some ressources on hardest and extreme difficulty so I tried an AI battle on hard difficulty and even there it destroyed the AoE DE Extreme AI. Wish I could test hard difficulty Pharaon against Extreme difficulty DE but thats not possible.

I also played two games so far against it on hard/hardest difficulty setting. Overall I can say that the AI looks very promising and it plays more "intelligent" in many situations from what I have seen. It can build towers at your gold to deny it from you, it will try to kill your villagers instead of attacking uesless walls or buildings (from what I have seen) and it won't suicide all troops into towers instead of going into your economy when you didn't even wall. The castle age times seem slower than DE because it likes to commit to feudal age agression.

Here is the description for the AI:

    https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/4193

I also added a comment about some test games if you are interested to read about my experience with it.

To get the AI in the game you can subscribe to the mod. In the main menu click on mods, then select browse mods and there will be Pharaon_DE. You can filter for AI to find it faster.

If you know about other good AI's for AoE 2 DE please let us know. I know there is a barbarian AI somewhere but it doesn't seem to work with the new civs and extreme difficulty. Since it doesn't have userpatch I also guess that it is weaker than the one from voobly.

[Shitpost] Drush into Xbows appreciation thread

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:24 PM PDT

This build order is the shit. Look at them come with their brown helmets club your not-yet-loomed berry vills like they're golf balls. Surprise! I'm Aztec and I come with ten. Or I'm Japanese and I make the Barracks before the mill without sacrificing anything to my basic build. Hope your villagers appreciate all their idle time. Trying to counter attack but they're already away. Trying to go back to work but they come to hit again.

And then I wall. Houses and palissades everywhere. Double palissades. Fortified palissades. Your scouts are useless because I have the easiest map to wall ever. Btw Golden Pit's woodlines are the best in the game.

Feudal Age? Meh, never heard about that. I just send two vills to gold and now I'm transitioning to Castle at 34 pop with two range production. And upgrades. And eco techs. Meanwhile everybody forgot about the millitia but they were still alive in a corner of your base and they kill a random vill 11.

"Noooooo U can't just hit Castle Age at 16:05 and kill me with the xbow power spike!!!" Oh yes I can, haha arrows go brrr on your villagers. You prepared 20 skirms? I just need one mangonel or one knight to beat them back to Age of Empires. You're reaching Castle and making knights? Well I can go for fast ballistics or add spears, and their pathing's crap anyway.

My xbows are dancing from your woodlines, to your gold, to your mill, and back to your woodlines. Your eco's doomed. I have all the map control in the entire universe. This build is just instant gg.

Turn off double click selecting all villagers?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 06:06 PM PDT

Is it possible to make it so double clicking a villager will NOT select all villagers? I dont know if its an issue with my corsair mouse or something else but last four games in a row i keep accidentally selecting every villager in sight and giving them the same order which is a disaster.

    Area surrounding minimap not clickable?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:05 AM PDT

    Area surrounding minimap not clickable?

Hey guys, I wonder if anyone else has this issue? Whenever I'm playing, that section of the screen is not clickable. By that I mean, i cant select units/buildings, build or move my units there. I found it can be really annoying at times because I have to move my camera to do it, resulting in mistakes, or even not realizing that i didn't moved my units.

    That's all, thanks

Map with dozens of relics and wolves in the center

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:13 AM PDT

I remember playing a map like this in DE, but can't seem to find it in the map pool now. I've never downloaded custom maps, so I'm a little confused as to where it went. Does anyone know the map I'm refering to?
