Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 12: Aztecs vs Persians

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:48 PM PDT

Idk I don't have anything good for this one...

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Franks vs Huns, and next up is the Aztecs vs Persians!

    Aztecs: Infantry and Monk civilization

    • Villagers carry +5
    • Military units created +10% faster
    • Monks +5 hp per Monastery tech researched
    • Start with +50g
    • TEAM BONUS: Relics generate +33% gold
    • Unique Unit: Jaguar Warrior (Heavy anti-infantry infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Atlatl (Skirms +1 attack, +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Garland Wars (Infantry +4 attack)

    Persians: Cavalry civilization

    • Start with +50f, +50w
    • Town Centers and Docks x2 hp; work +10/15/20% faster in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 attack vs archers
    • Unique Unit: War Elephant (A huge elephant idk what else you'd expect)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kamandaran (Archer-line now costs 60w instead of 25w, 45g)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Mahouts (War Elephants move +30% faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, so for 1v1 Arabia, Aztecs have been king of the proverbial castle for... like a long time, whereas Persians, despite a brief moment of glory post-DE-launch, have largely remained mediocre. However, Persians are no slouches in early game, possess an eco to match Aztecs, and have a wide variety of options throughout the game. What is the bigger deal-breaker here, Aztecs without halbs to deal with lategame Persian cavalry, or Persians with awful swordsmen to deal with Aztec eagles?
    • On more closed maps, where both civs are able to boom a bit more comfortably and make it to late game a bit more consistently, how does this civ match up change? Aztecs still have great monks to deal with low-medium amounts of cav, but can still get swamped by Paladins, whereas Persians can certainly get run over by eagles before they even get to their cavalry. Whom do you favor?
    • In this spirit of my tournament, as well as the new addition to the map pool, let's talk about these civs on Land Nomad! Persians, while undautably top-tier on regular nomad due to their early fishing ship, do not get to benefit from the extra starting res nearly as much on LN. Meanwhile, Aztecs will have a much easier time making Castle Age aggression happen with infantry/monks/siege. Is this enough to stop the still incredibly powerful Persian boom and lategame?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Celts vs Chinese. Hope to see you there! :)

    How do i stop them?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:09 AM PDT

Remember, if you have a TG rating of under 1500 you will get players in their placement games or right out of placement games.

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 12:59 AM PDT

So if you have a rating below that, you'll probably get people who either have never played a competitive team game, or never really played them at all from time to time.

So if a team mate seems confused on what they're supposed to do, maybe a little bit of a kind and guiding hand would help everyone (including yourself) have a better experience.

That's all, have a good day!

Fix one, break two: new bugs in DE

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

    1) Builders walk over to build any unfinished buildings in your entire LOS. As a consequence, farmers walk to opponent farms if they are in your LOS. Shockingly bad bug.

    2) periodic stutters now occurring randomly

Please comment any other big bugs you've experienced

I'll give credit where it is due: melee pathing seems massively improved

    Unpopular opinion:

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 05:23 AM PDT

Most people here inflate their ELO in the comments or they take something that has happened in a few of their games and inflate it to feel like it's happening in most of their games.

I have had tough teammates and tough games, but nothing consistently like the horrors that the comments on this reddit would seem to indicate.

AoE2 feels like it's exercising my brain

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I played this game as a kid when it came out and I've played hundreds of games, RTS and otherwise, multiplayer and otherwise.

Recently I'm coming back into AoE2 and I'm experiencing an insane brain-enhancing effect from playing it, unlike anything I've experienced in any game before. The simultaneous use of my memory for build orders, civ compositions, managing both economy and army macro, and economy and army micro, having your mind in almost two places at once... it's really setting my brain on fire, almost literally, I can feel it after a long post-imp game.

In daily life I'm sharper, I am more creative, old interests that I didn't have the time/energy to devote myself to are resurfacing since I'm playing AoE2 seriously. It feels like AoE2 is almost like going to the gym for my brain, it's fantastic.

Has anyone had similar experiences from playing this game?

Petition for developers to play test each release

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Every update is the same story: some bugs slip though the cracks.

I don't get why do they insist on not doing play testing when you have such a good community that will happily test each of your updates for free? Give them a special profile icon or something, it's that simple and will solve many of your troubles.

I can imagine that they are working full 24/7 in an emergency hotfix when they would prefer to be doing something else, this is for your own good (and as a bonus your player base will have a less bugged experience and you won't look bad after each release).

    This time we have:

    1) Random Freeze every couple of minutes.

    2) Villagers walking across the map to build something or to lure a sheep.

    3) Some times gates get stuck at 0% and you have to delete and build them again.

    PLEASE PLAY TEST!

How many times have you bought this game? 20 years of appreciation

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:03 PM PDT

I first bought AOEII when it came out, or it was gifted to me, I'm not sure now.

I bought it again when I thought I lost my first copy in a move (Remember when CDs, and game manual art was a thing, that you could lose?)

    I've bought the expansion.

I happily bought the HD version on steam, as did 7 of my friends and family

    DLCs.

I've bought the DE version for myself, one as a gift, and 4 friends/family have bought their own copies.

I've been playing RTS games since Warcraft 1, and this is the most fun I've had with a game. I have a weekly game night with friends that has been going steady for a few years now, I've started playing a few ranked games (SO STRESSFULL!!!), and I've seen a few people on this sub that had asked if any lower elo peeps wanted to join their game groups, I think I'm going to branch out and do just that.

I even had a post that took off and almost cracked the top 10 posts of all time on here (it has since moved quite far down the list)

I just wanted to say that this game is great, the community is awesome. Thanks to the people here I was introduced to T90 and SoTL, The Hidden Cup Tournaments, Nili's Apartment Cup tournament (my favourite!) and a whole slew of fun people to watch. Having this community around a 20 year old game that is still going strong is such a treasure.

So, thanks to anyone that reads this, that shares on this sub, or that normally lurks and just enjoys the game on their own!

What are the best civ compositions in team games?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:40 AM PDT

On this sub and on yt it's mostly about 1v1, but I almost always play with friends in team games. Lately we discovered the berber/Indian comp works quite well bc of the +5 damage vs buildings by camel archers. Is there sth like a tier list for best civ comps?

I'm trying to make a website for aoe II DE low elo tournaments; pls no bully

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:45 PM PDT

    The link is http://lowelolegends.com

I'm looking for some volunteers to join. If it redirects to https delete the 's' I'm still trying to figure out how to add a certificate or make it redirect to http. Let me know if you have any suggestions. It takes the player's real elo and puts the user in a bracket with similarly ranked players so you don't get to play against players above or below 100 elo points from you.

I've also set up a scheduling system so it doesn't match players in China with South America. I know there are a few fields to fill but it takes less than 1 minute; if I don't ask for the players availability I think it might be hard to match players. You select 4 civilizations and play 3 of those in a best of 3 matchup. Anyway if it doesn't work at least I've learned some programming in the process.

Why does the War Galley / Galleon firing sound like opening an envelope?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:59 AM PDT

Or opening a filing cabinet really quickly. Just feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to give 'em some oomph if you ask me.

Sorry if you expected this to be an AoE2 joke with a punchline and not just a mild criticism.

losing connection to server after patch?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 05:02 AM PDT

    Hi guys

So I've played a few games so far where either i have lost connection and disconnected from the game when my internet is working perfectly fine or it has been a player on the enemy team. Literally has happened every second game i've played since the new patch. As I am posting this I am apparently attempting to reconnect to my ranked game. I have pretty stable internet too and don't have any issues with other games.

There is nothing more frustrating than disconnecting from a close hour long ranked game...

Breakdown of the skill levels by ELO rating AOE2 DE

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:01 PM PDT

There is an excellent post about the skill level by ELO based on AOE2 HD.

What would skill level looked like based on DE? Is it still too soon to say, since 1100 now is stronger than 6 months ago.

Do Mamelukes get affected by the Indian Team Bonus?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT

Had a discussion with a friend whether or not Mamelukes get the +5 against buildings bonus. Berber camel archers get it for sure, but he mentioned Mamelukes are some kind of extra armor class or sth like that, so he doesn't think they get affected.
