Posted: 18 Jul 2020 03:37 PM PDT I'm sure you've all heard the story: played as a kid, saw there was still an active community all these years later, suddenly rediscover the game. I can't believe how engaged I've gotten in just the past couple weeks trying to improve, figure out mechanics, actual strategy (who bothered with that at 9?) etc. Just beat the AI on hard for the first time (I know I know, small potatoes, but I'm new) and I'm just so impressed by how much fun I've had. Anyhow, no deep insights or big point beyond being excited to have found the game again. Thanks for those of you who have kept it alive. Anyone else here new? [link] [comments]

Even with Supplies, Swordsman are still weak. (With few exceptions) Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:40 AM PDT Yes obviously the exceptions exist. But one thing that's consistent is Long Swordsman. They just aren't viable in Castle age. (Malians could be argued) Sure champions are ok. But only on civs with infantry bonuses. Even then, how often do you actually see them? I've only seen them playing against Japanese tbh. And once against the Slavs. Man at arms are great, but only in the first few seconds of the Fuedal age. Before archers come out. So Swordsman start off great in late dark age. Fall off hard in castle. But are slightly better in Imperial. How do we solve this problem without buffing the outliers like Goths, Burmese, Malay etc. Perhaps reduce the resource cost to 40f 20g? With Supplies. As supplies is now it's a noob trap. Maybe make infantry 45f 20g baseline? Remove supplies entirely? Maybe just buff long swordsman by like 10 hp? And buff champion by the same amount? Tell me your thoughts. As it is now Supplies isn't used much and neither are Infantry. I believe that the role Infantry should fill is as the most cost effective unit period. They're slow, and they're melee units. They should beat paladins cost effectively, but just barely. They should be the unit that you shouldn't be afraid to throw at anything but siege. (To clarify, I'm talking about generic vs generic. I don't believe that generic Briton longswords should beat the legendary Berber knight rush. No way.) Just my opinion. As it is now there's no reason to make them unless youre forced to. Goths, Aztecs, Slavs, Japs, etc. Knights and Paladins are just a straight upgrade. Many civs classed 'Infantry' still knight rush in castle, or crossbow. But never their namesake. (Celts, Vikings, Burmese, Malians perfect examples of this) [link] [comments]

"Select all military" is quite useful hotkey. Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:57 AM PDT I dont know the default hotkey, for me it is alt+f. It helps me to see where my army is at the late messy game from the minimap. Also, you can task them all to the one point too. "Select all idle villagers" is good too which is ctrl+f for me [link] [comments]
AOE2 HD - How do I disable borderless window fullscreen? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:50 AM PDT So I recently bought AOE2 HD. An issue I noticed immediately was when I move my mouse over to the border, it goes to my other monitor. How do I enable a "true" fullscreen mode and not this borderless window mode? I like move my mouse to the sides as opposed to right click and drag. [link] [comments]
Rationale behind the build orders Posted: 18 Jul 2020 06:14 PM PDT Anyone have a resource that has explanations for the build orders (i.e., WHY do we only have 3 on wood for scouts instead of 4), etc. I am not great at memorizing but if I get why to do certain things in the build or if i need to transition what i should target to have my eco reorganized to look like then i think it could help me a lot. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:59 AM PDT Given that in-game Gbetos were a bit anachronistic since their name is based on 18th - 19th century Dahomey Amazons ( https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Malians ), it's still nice to hear that they are going to make a movie about them : https://shadowandact.com/viola-davis-lupita-nyongo-the-woman-king-dahomey-amazons [link] [comments]
How to access all units in the scenario editor ? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 08:15 AM PDT So I'm trying to compare various units fighting in the scenario editor but it seems to be locked to only offer me the post upgraded versions of each unit. Weirdly it also doesn't seem to respect what units are available for each civ. Like at the moment I am trying to use Mayans which only get 2-handed-swordsmen however the scenario editor will only let me place champions. Any idea how to fix this ? [link] [comments]
Fan of team games (Age of empires 2 hd ) Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:46 AM PDT Me and my friend want to start playing age of empires 2 hd and because we are not that good I'm wondering which is the best map for us to play on or with how much players we should play? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:43 AM PDT If I have the bundle while my friend just has the base game can I use civilisations which are from the bundle playing multiplayer with him? For example me playing with Italians while he has the base game only. Or opponents of course. [link] [comments]
Persians vs Incas, what do I do as Persians? 943 ELO Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:03 AM PDT I just had this civ match up as Persians and initially, i wanted to do a scout rush into archers and then add knights and elephants as I always do as Persians. however this time my enemy did a super fast fc and then proceeded to build a castle and spam his castle units which I totally forgot were super effective against any of my cav units. my initial thought was to just mass lots of lots of archers to deal with them, unfortunately, I had to witness that crossbows are not that strong against so many of these speer armed Incas. in the end, he started knocking on my doors and was killing everything i send at him with ease. eventually, he breached the walls and killed everything which was the GG. So in retrospect, the statistics told me that I had almost double the vill (10 vs 64) count and much more resources. I should have killed him right? but how? what would the best army composition look like? Persians don't have arbalests and the crossbows really didn't do much against his elite units. he literally only had Kamayuks and trebs. going elephants and knights would have been a waste of resources but what else was there? my last effort was to go champions but it was too late and the kamayuks are good against them too. I did not manage to amass mangonels and got too late into imp to think of hand cannoneer, would they have been the solution? My recorded game for anyone interested. Thanks for any adivice :) http://www.filedropper.com/mpreplayv101101379060202007191436541 [link] [comments]
Mayans have 25% discount on Stone Walls? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:53 AM PDT I see palisades are minus 50% as mentioned in the tech tree- shouldn't stone walls then have a 2 unit cost? I see a cost of 3 versus the other civs which have a 4 unit cost. I wouldn't like Mayans to have a 50% stone wall discount but it's weird it's only a 25% discount. [link] [comments]

I am aiming more for ranked than campaign. Also, this is technically my first aoe(i played aoe1 maybe 12 years ago and all i remember is the car with bazooka) what should I aim for in the beginning? my hands were shaking a bit after microing in the Booming campaign. that was a tough challenge with 100 vils and not keeping any of them idle but I managed bronze [link] [comments]
