The Vietnamese language used in the game, rated by a Vietnamese person. Part 2: Technologies

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:38 PM PDT

Welcome back! This will be part 2 of my posts on the Vietnamese language as used in the game upon changing the game language. Last time I talked about units. This time, it will be the technologies of the game (no Hunting Dogs or Tracking though, since they are no longer on the tech tree)

Last time, I got some great responses from, surprisingly and not-too-surprisingly enough, speakers of some Chinese languages (most notably, Cantonese)! They were able to read some of the *Vietnamese* words I keyed in despite our complicated cluster system and tones, matched 'em with Mandarin or Cantonese terms they are more familiar with and discussed with me their thoughts on them, and at the same time open my eyes up to brand-new terms used in the Traditional/Simplified translations of the game that could very well work even in Vietnamese (cảm ơn bạn u/html_lmth especially). So this time, I have included this new detail just for them: Han characters where a term I suspect and can track down is Sino-Vietnamese. No more ambiguity between languages!

Technology Vietnamese term Translation of the Vietnamese term into English My thoughts
Thumb Ring Ban chỉ (扳指) I don't even know if this word exists in our thesaurus or not, but if the Chinese Wikipedia is of any indication, it would mean "thumb ring" literally and here I thought they didn't borrow a few from the Chinese translations of the game 11
Parthian Tactics Chiến thuật Parthia (戰術) literal
    Supplies Vật tư literal
Squires Hộ vệ (護衛 / 护卫) literal
Arson Phóng hoả (放火) literal, "set fire"
    Bloodlines Huyết mạch (血脈) literal
    Husbandry Chăn nuôi literal
Padded Archer Armor Giáp vải cung thủ "archer's textile armor" "padded" got left out
Leather Archer Armor Giáp da cung thủ "archer's leather armor"
Ring Archer Armor Giáp vòng cung thủ "archer's ring armor"
Fletching Lông gắn chuôi tên "feathers attached to the end of an arrow" A bit lengthy, but that's Vietnamese for ya
Bodkin Arrow Tên xuyên giáp "armor-piercing arrow" Not quite 100% the meaning of "bodkin", but as an upgrade to regular arrows it makes sense
    Bracer Bao cổ tay "armguard"
    Forging Rèn literal
    Iron Casting Đúc gang literal
Blast Furnace Lò luyện kim literal
Scale Barding Armor Giáp ngựa vảy "scale cavalry armor"
Chain Barding Armor Giáp ngựa xích "chain cavalry armor"
Plate Barding Armor Giáp ngựa tấm "plate cavalry armor"
Scale Mail Armor Giáp vẫy "scale armor" so infantry armors are OG and cavalry ones are derived from that? No problems on my end, but that does sound sorta weird
Chain Mail Armor Giáp xích "chain armor"
Plate Mail Armor Giáp tấm "plate armor"
    Gillnets Lưới rê literal
Careening Nối đất "connect to the ground" this is better-known as an electrical term IMO, though even I don't know ship-building/maintenance enough to critique it
Dry Dock Xưởng cạn "dry factory"
    Shipwright Thợ đóng tàu literal
    Masonry Công tác nề literal
    Architecture Kiến trúc (建築) literal

    Hoardings Rào quây literal
    Sappers Công binh (工兵) literal
Conscription Cưỡng chế tòng quân literal
Spies / Treason Gián điệp (間諜 / 间谍) / Phản quốc (反國) literal for both I am 99% certain that "phản quốc" is Sino-Vietnamese, but the Chinese term for treason is actually 叛國 so a tad bit different
Redemption Cứu chuộc literal, "to redeem"
Atonement Chuộc tội literal, "to atone"
Herbal Medicine Thảo dược (草藥) literal
    Heresy Dị giáo (異教) literal
Sanctity Sự thiêng liêng literal, or "sacredness"
Fervor Nhiệt huyết (熱血) literal heh, I always think it translates to "passionate"
    Faith Đức tin literal
Illumination Khai sáng (開創) literal, "to enlighten"
    Block Printing In khuôn literal
Theology Thần quyền (神権 / 神权) "divine rights" Honestly, "Thần học" translates better
Loom Dệt may "textile" A more literal translation would be "Khung cửi"
    Town Watch Gác thành literal
Town Patrol Tuần tra thành (巡查城) literal
    Wheelbarrow Xe rùa literal
Hand Cart Xe kéo tay literal
Gold Mining Khai thác vàng literal

Caravan Xe lưu động "mobile wagon"
    Guilds Phường hội (坊会) literal
Horse Collar Tròng cổ ngựa literal
Heavy Plow Cày sâu "deep plowing"
    Crop Rotation Luân canh literal

Wow, normal techs are translated much closer than I thought they would, compared to units. Maybe unique techs would be a bit more varied...

Unique technology Vietnamese term Translation of the Vietnamese term into English My thoughts
Yeomen Nghĩa dũng binh (義勇兵) literal
Warwolf Sói chiến literal, "battle wolf"
Greek Fire Lửa Hi Lạp literal
Logistica Hậu cần học (後勤學 / 后劝学) literal, "logistics"
    Stronghold Thành trì (城池) literal
Furor Celtica Bạo binh Celt "Celtic barbarians"
Great Wall Trường Thành (長城) Literally it means "long wall", but when written capitalised as such it refers to the Great Wall of China specifically
Chivalry Tinh thần hiệp sĩ literal
    Bearded Axe Rìu râu literal
Anarchy Vô chính phủ (無政府) literal
Perfusion Kĩ thuật vảy literal (I guess? Never heard of this term before)

Kataparuto Máy bắn đá "catapult" us Vietnamese and Japanese great minds think alike 11
Nomads Du mục (游牧 / 遊牧) literal
Drill Thao luyện (操練 / 操练) literal, "intense practice" For the longest time I thought "drill" here means actual drills added on siege weapons that somehow allow them to move faster 11
Kamandaran untranslated Given that it means "archers" in Farsi, I guess not translating is a nice choice
Mahouts Quản tượng (管象) literal, "elephant keeper"
Madrasah Trường học Hồi giáo literal, "Muslim school"
Zealotry Nhiệt tâm "enthusiastic inner self" (maybe?) "Zealotry" straight-up translates to "lòng cuồng tín" ("fanaticism" translates to the same thing to us)
    Ironclad Bọc sắt literal
Crenellations Tường răng cưa "battlement" "Crenellations" refers to the act of creating battlements, while the Vietnamese term refers to the state of the battlement after the crenellation process
Sipahi Kị binh Sipahi "Sipahi cavalry" A bit of an overlap, but cool nonetheless
    Artillery Pháo binh (炮兵) literal
Chieftains Thủ lĩnh "leader" "Thủ lĩnh bộ lạc" is a wordier-but-closer-to-original-meaning choice IMO
Berserkergang Cuồng nộ "fury" ... oh well at least it's short, I much prefer that to "nhóm cuồng binh" 11
Atlatl Tên ném "arrow-thrower" Weird that they chose "arrow" rather than "spear" for this one given that real atlatls throw spears and not arrows
Garland Wars Chiến tranh vòng hoa literal
    Marauders Đạo tặc (盜賊) literal
    Atheism Vô thần (無神) literal
Panokseon Tàu siêu kết cấu (超結構 / 超结构) "super-structured ship" Checks out if the AoE Wikia is to be believed 11. Sidenote: "panokseon" translates to "Ván ốc thuyền" Sino-Vietnamese speaking ( 板屋船) (again, according to the AoE Wikia)
Shinkichon Thần cơ tiễn (神机箭) "magical machine arrow" thta's some big arrow lol
Obsidian Arrow Mũi tên hắc diện thạch literal "Obsidian" there is translated as "黒面石"

Sultans Hồi vương literal, "Muslim king"
Shatagni Súng Shatagni "Shatagni guns" I have nussin' to say
Pavise Khiên lồi "convex shield" nani?
Silk Road Con đường tơ lụa literal
Corvinian Army Quân đội Corvinian "the army of Corvinian" A more correct translation should be "Quân đội Corvinus" IMO ("Corvinian" here is just an adjective related to Matthias Corvinus right?)
Recurve Bow Cung cong ngược literal
Orthodoxy Chính thống giáo (正統教) literal though the term don't sound too specific, in Vietnam it concerns the Eastern Orthodox Church unless specified otherwise
Druzhina Thân binh (親兵) don't know how to translate, "comrades" maybe?
Kasbah Thành luỹ "rampart" militarising words and places, eh? I like it!
Maghrabi Camels Lạc đà Maghreb literal, "camels of Maghreb" Oh this one distinguishes adjective from noun well!
Royal Heirs Người kế vị "heir"

    Bagains untranslated
Steppe Husbandry Chăn nuôi trên đồng cỏ literal "Steppe" here is translated a tad differently from in "Steppe Lancer". Rest assured, "thảo nguyên" and "đồng cỏ" both means "steppe", the former Sino-Vietnamese (草原) and the latter using native Vietnamese words
Cuman Mercenaries Lính đánh thuê Cuman literal
Hill Fort Hào luỹ trên đồi literal, "defensive structures on the hill"
    Tower Shield Khiên tháp literal
    Silk Armor Giáp lụa literal
Timurid Siegecraft Thuật công thành Timurid literal, "siegecraft of Timurid" another adjective used plainly as noun in the translation! It's just "Timur"!

Wow, technologies are overall translated much closer and more literal than I thought it would/was able to! That's great IMO, even if I didn't get to talk as much about what I think are better ways to translate!

Next part will be the last, and it will cover the buildings! Nah ya know what, there won't be as much buildings left, and civ names in Vietnamese are mostly country names anyway. Let's cover 'em here too!

Building Vietnamese term Translation of the Vietnamese term into English My thoughts
Barracks Nhà lính literal, "soldier's building" I prefer "doanh trại" (營寨) to "nhà lính" myself
Archery Range Trường bắn "shooting range" given that guns will be available later in the game, the translation works even better than the English term do!
Stables Chuồng ngựa literal, "horse pen"
    Blacksmith Lò rèn literal
Siege Workshop Xưởng vũ khí công thành literal
    Dock Bến tàu literal
    Fish Trap Bẫy cá literal

    Castle Lâu đài (樓臺) literal
    Monastery Tu viện (修院) literal
    House Nhà ở literal
Town Center Nhà chính "main house" Town centers are a bit of a foreign concept in feudal Vietnam. Maybe that's why it wasn't translated more accurately
Wonder Kì quan (奇觀 / 奇观) literal
Mining Camp Bãi khai thác "mining area"
Lumber Camp Bãi đốn gỗ "lumber area"
    Mill Nhà xay lương literal
Farm Nông trại (農寨) literal A simpler alternative is "ruộng", since "nông trại" often means any large agricultural area altogether
    Market Chợ literal
Feitoria Trạm mậu dịch (貿易 / 贸易) literal, "trading post"
Krepost Đồn luỹ (屯壘) "army camp" This is probably intended as translating Krepost literally would just be "lâu đài" like Castles
    Harbour Cảng (港) literal
Civilization (only those different enough from the English names) Vietnamese term Translation of the Vietnamese term into English My thoughts
Indians Ấn Độ (印度) Sino-Vietnamese spelling; very prominent in place names, even with non-East Asian ones I don't know if this is a newer word based on "India" or if it's been that way from the start, since I don't think "Bharat" could be spelt like that
Persians Ba Tư (波斯) Sino-Vietnamese spelling Still in use as slang for Iran, much like how "Persia" is still in use in English
Portuguese Bồ Đào Nha (葡萄牙) Sino-Vietnamese spelling
Vietnamese Đại Việt (大越) "Great Viet" That's the name of the northern part of modern-day Vietnam between 1054-1400 and 1428-1804 (in the latter period, only then can the South be included as it was under Champa rule for quite some time)
Byzantines Đông La Mã (東羅馬 / 东羅馬) "Eastern Roman" We do call them "Byzantine" as well
Turks Đột Quyết (突厥) Sino-Vietnamese spellng (?) This is the Chinese term for the Turks and, tbf, I have never heard of it before in my life. And, unlike in English or Turkish when "Turk" and "Turkey" are similar, in Sino-Vietnamese it's "Đột Quyết" and "Thổ Nhĩ Kì" (土耳其)!
    Huns Hung (匈) Sino-Vietnamese spelling
Lithuanians Litva literal This is the Russian exonym of the country's name BTW (endonym "Lietuva"). Only a very few number of place names are in Russian in Vietnamese btw, mostly Russian places like "Moskva", "Sankt Peterburg"... Only Litva and "Krym" are country-and-territory-level names I know of, not even Russia itself (which goes by "Nga" (俄)), and I myself uses the English exonyms
Malay Mã Lai (馬來) Sino-Vietnamese spelling Still in use as slang/shorthand for Malaysia (for Indonesia, we just say "Indo" - not confusable with India)
Burmese Miến Điện (緬甸 / 缅甸) "the far suburbs" This is taken from Chinese writing, which makes sense given that Myanmar is way too far from most of old China's capitals. Still in use as slang (and for those who can't be bothered trying to read things the Western way), and to describe pre-1988 Myanmar, similar to how "Burma" is used in English to cover the same period
Mongols Mông Cổ (蒙古) Sino-Vietnamese spelling Nowadays used equally to describe "Mongol" and "Mongolia"/Mongolian"
Japanese Nhật Bản (日本) literal Equivalent to Japanese's "Nihon", "origin of the Sun"
Spanish Tây Ban Nha (西班牙) Sino-Vietnamese spelling
Koreans Triều Tiên (朝鮮 / 朝鲜) literal Equivalent to Korean's "Choson/Joseon", "beautiful mornings". Still in use as shorthand for North Korea (officially, we use a translation of the DPRK title for news and such; for South Korea, we use "Hàn Quốc" (韓國 / 韓国, equivalent to their "Hanguk", "country of the Han people" (note: Korean "Han" is different from Chinese "Han")), for all occasions), for the peninsula in general, the language, and the people. If not, then like in English, we will just call them "Bắc Triều Tiên" or "Bắc Hàn" (北朝鮮 / 北朝鲜 or 北韓)) and "Nam Triều Tiên" or "Nam Hàn" (南朝鮮 / 南朝鲜 or 南韓) to better distinguish the two and leave "Triều Tiên" the more neutral term. Fun sidenote: as with English deriving "Korea" from "Goryeo", we derived a word out of it as well: "Cao Li" (高麗), used ubiquitously to refer to that dynasty
Chinese Trung Quốc (中國 / 中国) literal Equivalent to, among other languages, Mandarin's "Zhongguo" and, Cantonese's "Junggwok", "middle country". That's the most common way to refer to China, if not then "Trung Hoa" (中華 / 中华) (derived from the translated full PRC title)

And with that, that's every term I could find on the tech tree when changing the game language to Vietnamese! I have a lot of fun reading up on and writing these 2 posts and hope y'all have fun reading them as well!

Strategies that does not work against low eli players

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 07:06 AM PDT

Hello. It maybe a stupid question but was wondering if there are any strategies that are not that affective against low ELO players compared to higher ones, since they are not aware of the meta that surrounds it and responds to them non-conventionally? Which normally viable strategies may be uneffective or even bad to practice against people who play the game more in your face way at the lower level?

Razala - Age of Empires 2 Diplomacy / Roleplay group!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:25 PM PDT

I made a post recently asking if there were any RP/Diplomacy groups out there anymore and it seemed that the answer was no, so I started a group with a new friend of mine and we have begun to plan out a grand RP/strategy using AOE as a medium!

This groups is going to be a hub for diplomacy style multiplayer games and RP based around a shared worldspace we are creating. The Diplomacy games will simply be more relaxed games where the object isnt to kill the boars quickly and pump out as many units as you can to bumrush your enemy. No, instead the games will be cooled down, more easy-going about things. Now instead of having to worry about being annihilated if you don't do everything perfect, you can simply take a deep breathe and relax.

Now, this also means that games can potentially be boring. Well, let me squash those pathetic thoughts for the battles in our RP games are now far more epic and grand on every scale. Battles are not fought to win, but instead to create a moment in AOE that you won't soon forget. City sieges are encouraged to be full on battles with hundreds of infantry per side and only a handful of siege weapons so that battles are more grand and the memory of having your 300 man army either win or lose is something no normal game will have.

If any of this sounds interesting then please swing on by our new discord, its a work in progress since im older and work a lot, but hopefully we can get some fun games going :)

Strategies with mongols aside of mass mangudais

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:53 PM PDT

Hi there. I'm planning of playing some games with mongols after a looong time (I've just finishied Netflix's Marco Polo) but the thing is that every game I play against them the only thing my opponents seems to do is go either scouts to mangudais or fc mangudais. Like literally every game and it's the only non-siege unit they make. It led to the point of not only get me to hate that unit despite being one of the strongest in the game but also not knowing anything else the civ could do. So now I'm in this situation of wanting to play mongols but trying to avoid mangudais (unless they go siege or pikes or smth when mangudais is definetly the way to go) or at least make them part of an army composition. So the question is, what other strategies or army comps are at least viable with mongols? Thank you in advance

    Noob question about bonus dmg

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:14 AM PDT

Assuming the situation of CA plumes vs huskarls: Plumes have +1 vs infantry, but huskarls have enough pierce armor to reduce the dmg to 0 which gets buffed to 1. Does the bonus dmg still apply? Meaning, which path of calculation (generally for all kinds of bonus dmg/armor classes) is correct:

    A) All dmg and bonus dmg vs the corresponding armor classes gets calculated individually, if it would be 0 individually it gets buffed to 1 for each armor class and then added, leading to 2 total dmg in our case

    B) The buffing up to 1 only occurs at the very end, which, since the pierce armor exceeds the pierce damage, leads to dealing the 1 bonus dmg only: 1 total dmg.

    C) A and B are wrong, in which case, what happens?

    19pop Britons Fast Archers BO

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 06:58 AM PDT

    Hey there,

    Introduction

I'm trying to create some civ-specific build orders that heavily lean into their bonuses and came up with this one for Britons: we use their faster shepherds, 1.2x range work rate and better archers to create a very early force of archers to harass our opponent and one-up their military.

Compared to a standard 23pop double range build, this build produces the first group of archers faster (e.g. 12min23 vs 12min53 for 6 archers), at which point you can add a 2nd range (or a stable) anyways. Also, the first archer is produced signficantly earlier (~10min) which means that you can have some defensive archers vs Militia before the M@A upgrade comes in or start harassing super early.

On a side note, this build is more flexible, ie not as easily countered by one range skirms, because we don't blindly invest in a second range in early feudal.

Still there's some trade-offs: we don't get our blacksmith instantly upon hitting feudal and the build is harder to execute. Also, we have less villagers working during ageing up, which is only partly compensated by getting an earlier axe.

At first glance, 19pop sounds really hard to accomplish, but with the right villager allocation and the Briton sheep bonus, I found it to be relatively easy and consistent.

    The build:

    19pop Britons fast archers

    pop task

    dark age

    • 1-6: build a house, then eat sheep (5 total)
    • 7: build a house, then a lumbercamp, chop wood (1 total)
    • 8: to wood (2 total)
    • 9: lure boar, eat boar along with shepherds (6 total)
    • 10-12: to boar, dont forget to get in your 2nd boar lure in time (9 total)
    • 13: build a house near your berries, then a mill, forage (1 total)
    • 14: forage berries (2 total)
    • 15-16: to boar/sheep (11 total). If you cannot fully surround your boar and/or once your 2nd boar depletes, start gathering from your remaining sheep in groups of 4-7 vils.
    • 17-18: to wood (4 total)
    • 19: build a mining camp on gold, mine gold (1 total).

    • as soon as you have gathered 500 food or clicked feudal, go down to 4 on food under TC and send the rest to wood (4 to woodline + 3 to stragglers or similar)
    • research loom, advance to feudal with: 11 lumberjacks, 4 shepherds, 2 foragers, 1 miner.
    • on the way up, as soon as wood becomes available, build a barracks (start before 61% to feudal!) and a house.
    • once you run out of sheep/deer under TC, you can send those vils to the mill to forage (or to build farms once horse collar is complete).

    feudal age (ideal time: 16x25sec + 130sec = 8:50)

    • queue two villagers. Immediatly build an archery range with two villagers, queue archers once complete. Keep your TC and range queued with archers and vils, there should be very little, if any, downtime.
    • get Double-Bit Axe and Horse Collar as soon as you can afford them which should be within the first minute to feudal. Don't forget to add houses!
    • 20-22: to gold (4 total)
    • 23: farm
    • 24+: to wood/farms, adapt
    • you should be able to afford both a blacksmith and a second lumbercamp before you hit 30 population.
    • you need 4 goldminers and 2 lumberjacks to keep archer production up and 6-7 on food to keep villager production up. All extra villagers can be tasked to wood first or build farms around TC.

The build order fades out here: Feel free to add some eco modules depending on the situations or add goldminers and farmers to follow up with a 22-23min castle age. Here's some guideline numbers:

    • adding 2nd range archers: build range, +4 goldminers, +2 lumberjacks.
    • adding 2nd range skirms: build range, +5 farms, +4 lumberjacks.
    • adding scouts: build stable, +8 farmers.
    • adding spears: +5 farms, +3 lumberjacks.

    Pros/Cons

    - delayed blacksmith

    - harder to execute, less wiggle-room

    - less vils during advancing, less surplus resources e.g. to wall

    - initial single goldminer susceptible to being sniped

+ very early archers to counter drush or M@A, start harassing

+ first 7 archers produced faster

+ more flexible, not as easily countered

    + surprise factor: off-meta, unpredictable

    Notes

    • optional, but recommended: pushing 1-2 deer under the TC in mid dark age to early feudal will let you transition from sheep/deer to farms without going to berries.
    • the normal two-house start also works. I simply like to delay the second house to avoid building it on gold/berries and potentially start walling.
    • this build is intended for (half)open land maps with standard resources (arabia-esque).
    • best in 1v1s or as TG flanks. probably not great as pocket.

I would be happy to know what you think about the build and its viability or any other feedback!

    Multiplayer issues

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:23 PM PDT

Since yesterday I have been having issues connecting o multiplayer servers with the message "failed to connect to multiplayer servers". It was fine as I would just restart the game and it would fix the issue. Today I'm getting the same error but restarting doesn't fix it anymore. Anyone got any idea on what's going on? I'm playing through steam btw.

Does anyone else get super freaked out about the blue eyes king easter egg loading screen? Looks so wrong.

    I'm talking about this guy:

It just looks so wrong. The ultra realistic face with these nightmarish blue eyes... I'm a grown man and this shit terrified me the first time I saw it.

    Multiplayer broken for anyone else?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:00 PM PDT

Right now I am experiencing longer than usual time to create party, error messages varying from "unable to join party," "unable to connect to multiplayer services," and when actually joining queue, only 3 of 4 players in a 4v4 will load, and the game will not start.

    Am I the only one?

edit: as of 6pm PDT matchmaking seems to be back to normal.

Laming is supported mainly by people < 1200 Elo because they or their opponent routinely fail the lame, making it seem balanced: Change my mind

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:34 AM PDT

I've made a post on laming before in which I argued that laming needs to be nerfed. It wasn't well received, and those that supported laming mostly argued that laming could be easily countered by blocking the enemy scout or by just laming them back.

The same sentiment was seen in this post. Lots of people claiming it's something that requires skill to pull off, it's balanced because both players can do it, etc, etc.

I'm beginning to suspect that the majority of players who argue this are those that play in an Elo range where they and their opponents cannot consistently pull off a successful lame. At this level of play, laming is a much more balanced affair in that, even if lames were successful 100% of the time, the extra food plays less of a role in the outcome of a match due to loose build orders, bad macro, etc. But also, scouts die a lot when you're learning to lame. Players see that and assume it's just not worth it.

Now, after a certain point, players can consistently lame a boar successfully even while being challenged by their opponent's scout. At this point, they should also be able to managed their eco decently well while performing the lame. This is where laming becomes truly lame.

At this point, it becomes pretty trivial to keep your scout in aggro distance of the boar. You take some damage to your scout, maybe more if the opponent is able to challenge you (which is not always the case), but it's pretty much always worth it to lame your opponent. You instantly create a 680 food disparity between you and your opponent once that boar makes it to the TC.

    Definitive Edition on Linux

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:18 PM PDT

I know there are existing posts about this, but I've tried all the suggestions, as well as those found at the ProtonDB website etc., so thought I'd try asking here.

I have a very strange issue where most of the time, the game boots to the main menu, and then at the same point (judging by where the theme music gets up to!) it crashes back to the desktop. If I'm fast enough during this time, I can get into the menus normally, e.g. campaigns, but it still crashes.

However, without changing anything on my system, very occasionally it seems to get past this crash, and if it does, the game works perfectly (at least in single-player, haven't tried multi yet). So as long as I don't quit the game, I can play to my heart's content!

I'm running under Debian 9. nvidia-driver is at latest available version (418.74) for Debian 9. I have had it work (at random) for various versions of Proton, at one point I successfully played an entire campaign under Proton 5.0.9.

I've tried various changes, such as installing vulkan-utils, different Proton versions and Launch Options, but nothing seems to affect this crashing behaviour.

Perhaps the only pattern is that it seems to work immediately after a patch or hotfix is installed, but then not again after that. Maybe there is some kind of caching issue? Although this could also be mere coincidence.

    How play Indians in 1vs1

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:22 AM PDT

Indians are real good civs in team game, but I don't know how play them in 1vs1.

They don't have knight line, and they don't have eagles, yes they are not meso.

They don't have arb. not full up infantry, don't have siege ram, siege ornager.

So I feel confuse, what to do. UUs are expensive, so hard to use in 1vs1.

What is best play when they don't need camels? For example vs meso or archer civs.

Suggestion/Idea : Add damage graph to post game stats, by source (and total)

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I was watching a long Slav game the other day, and wondered, ok, Slav infantry does 5 bonus damage to adjacent targets half tile away, but over the course of the game how effective it actually was? Compared to the direct damage for instance

I wonder how effective are really some units/types of damage, so I think it would be nice (and not so hard) to add a tab showing just that. For example, how much damage you did solely with mangonel shots? Did your elephants deal more trample than direct damage? Etc

I feel like kills/deaths numbers are not enough, since killing skirms and paladins does not hold the same value.

    Maybe possible as a mod?
