    With all this debate around the map pool and should it be unlimited bans or Arabia only, I thought it would be interesting to look at what the data says. I used the aoe2.net api to look for games that were played from the release of the new map pool. Above 1800, I don't have a lot of data so be careful with your conclusions.

    I noticed a couple of interesting things.

    First of all, nobody likes Islands, no matter the elo group. There is not a single elo group in which Islands is played more than 5% of the time. There is no way of knowing what is the number of bans used by each player, but if we assume players either ban on average 2.5 maps, Islands is only unbanned around 30% of the time according to my simulations.

    People prefer Arena to Islands, but not that much. There is not a single group that play Arena more than 11% of the time.

    Gold Rush is liked in all elo groups, with around 20% usage for pretty much every group.

    All elo groups prefer Gold Rush to Hideout and Acropolis, but not by a big margin.

    New players seem to like Four Lakes, but not so much for mid-level players. This might have to do with the fact that this map was in the map pool 2 months ago. The results would maybe be different if the map was new in the map pool.

    Also, the popularity of Arabia increases with elo and this is not surprising. At the very top of the elo brackets, people seem to never ban Arabia because its popularity is around the theoretical maximum of 33%. I think that is why you see posts of Arabia only queue a lot on aoezone, but not that much here because people are more casual here. If everybody only liked Arabia, you wouldn't see such a drop in its popularity among the lower elo groups.

    If we take the assumption that people ban on average 2.5 maps, to create the distribution of the 1200-1300 elo, you would have to have these preferences :

    • Acropolis : .6
    • Arabia : .9
    • Arena : .55
    • Four Lakes : .55
    • Gold Rush : .8
    • Hideout : .75
    • Islands : .3

    Which means there is still around 10% in the 1200 - 1300 elo group that ban Arabia.

    This is why I like the new approach with the map pool, because there seems to be a discrepancy between lower level and higher level player. New player want diversity and better player want Arabia. With the new system of preferences, I think everybody gets what they want.

    Best Units Test - Late Imperial Team Compositions

    I decided to do some unit testing for realistic population capped teamgames to determine which units were best. Do keep in mind that factors such as speed/micro-ability aren't entirely accounted for, so slow powerful units will be appear slightly stronger than in reality. Anyway videos below:

    Inspired by this post, I have decided to make a table of the Vietnamese words, phrases and such used for units, techs and buildings when the game language is set to Vietnamese. I like to believe this is an unexplored topic on here, but I will give a preemptive apology here if someone has already written a post about it

    At first I thought I could cram in everything in one post, then I look back and realise how long I have already gone with just the units 11. So this one will be just that: all the units on the tech tree (so no Xolotl Warriors or Dismounted Konniks... for now)

    I recognize that this is a weird and totally-not-gameplay-related topic, but I have a lot of fun with this game and want to express my love for it. So this is how I will do it, since I suck at MP haha

    So I hope this will be a fun read, and have a wonderful weekend! Part 2 will come soon, maybe next week, maybe next day, maybe next hour... I haven't decided yet

    P.S. Some of y'all might have switched the game language to Vietnamese out of curiousity, and noticed that many instances of <y> in names are <i> in my post. Vietnamese treats <i> and <y> very interchangeably with only a few rules, so I tend to use <i> at all times unless preceded by <qu>, as <quy> sounds closer to <uy> than <qui> to <ui>

I think using "Kiếm sĩ" (lit. swordsman) would work here given that longswords are not well-known in Vietnam anyway
    Two-Handed Swordsman Song thủ kiếm sĩ literal
    Champion Kiếm sĩ vô địch literal, "invincible swordsman"
    Spearman Lính giáo literal

    Hand Cannoneer Pháo thủ Gunner "Pháo" is more often used for full-sized cannons or artileries, and even "Pháo thủ" is more widely used by Arsenal fans for "Gunners", so it's a bit weird IMO to use it here. The Sino-Vietnamese "thủ" does translate to "hand" though (see 2HS) and they seem to not want to use a more native Vietnamese-sounding term, so I guess there's that

    (Elite) Steppe Lancer Kị binh giáo thảo nguyên (siêu cấp) literal The "kị binh"/"kị sĩ" parallel shows up here again, and Steppe Lancers are called "kị binh" like Light Cavs (which makes sense given that the Mongols' bonus applies to both but not Knights) - another one I enjoyed!

This here will be my first proposal: a name change to "Trục phá đầu dê" (ram-headed rams) instead, utilising the ram/ram wordplay that has yet to be utilised while still be true to the unit's appearance

    Mangonel Xe bắn đá "catapult" Closest term once again
    Onager Xe bắn đá cải tiến "upgraded catapult/Mangonel" Yeah our language on siege weapons is a bit limited. Works out though as an upgrade

    (Heavy) Scorpion Nỏ máy (hạng nặng) "(Heavy) mechanized crossbow" Yet another term we don't have an equivalent one for. Ballistas, scorpions... nope. It does look like a giant crossbow though, so I guess this will have to make do

    Chu Ko Nu Nỏ liên châu The term "nỏ liên châu" is actually used in one of our legends about a similar multiple-shot crossbow concept, but I have no idea whether it relates to the "Zhuge crossbow" that "Chu Ko Nu" conveys or not (our most popular translation of the Romance of the Three Kingdom don't use a specific term for that type of crossbow IIRC)

    War Elephant Voi chiến "battle elephant" Yep, somewhere in the game the Persians does technically have Battle Elephants 11. My guess is that since Persians don't get Battle Elephants, having their unique unit share a translation with another unit with very similar stat structure and functionalities isn't too bad

    If Teutons got either Husbandry or at least Light Cavalry? If Malay got the second armour upgrade? If Saracens got Cavalier?

    And, my personal favorite and probably the one that will get me downvotes... If the most beautiful unique unit, the Elite War 🐘, became more usable... The first thing that comes to mind is that it has an armor against Elephant class bonus... Let the other puny Battle Elephants take the full damage...

    Amount of militia to drush

    I was wondering why always 3 militia is stated as the way to go for a drush. Why not 2? Shouldnt this be enough, in combination with scout, to delay the opponent?

    Quick wall berries? Worth it?

    Lets say 3 militia or man at arms enter your base (maybe with the enemy scout too) and head straight to your berries. You want to delay them and get either archers or scouts but you need a little more time. Granted you have enough time for any of the following options: Is your reflex to try and wall the sides? Wall the entire bush? Run back to the tc? They run out quick and placing the mill right against them make them the hardest resource to defend compared to mines and lumber. To make matters worse, you probably only have 2 villagers on each side ready to repair a palisade and they can easily get stuck. I know it can depend on a variety of other parameters but I would like to know your rule of thumb on the matter.

    Trying to find specific group of aoe2DE players. Custom Scenarios!

    Recently my friend have been hosting his map about Game of Thrones that is more complicated version of the aoe2HD version made from 0 but lobby fills real slow and we cannot practice or enoy the map because the map needs 8p to be fun. So i've created a discord server for anyone willing to share mapping expirience and to find players to play custom maps.
