    AOE 3 - Overhauled Edition: V 0.1 Released!

    The Community Online

First, I want to disclose that I have almost exclusively played vanilla for the past few weeks because I'm re-learning the game after years away. Hopefully that accounts for some of the stuff I want to discuss today.

Anyway, I bought the game and expansions new on Steam recently, having played the game when it was new for several years then quitting as my clan broke up and frankly, grew up. I never broke past 1st Lieutenant back then, spending most of my time as a master sergeant. So, I was decent but in no way was I an expert playing on the highest tiers.

So far I've been pretty darn bummed out by the online player-base. It seems to be full of smurfs, trolls, and I even think i've encountered people who intentionally lag or cheat the game but that is just speculation. Then there's the boring players, more on that later.

    1. Smurfs. Do i need to adopt a cruel "burn them all" approach with all players, regardless of perceived ranking and skill? I've encountered privates and corporals who have been more skilled than some 2nd Lieutenants i've played. Even conscripts on occasion. The game is cheap - are people really buying so many copies of it just to smurf? Also, I have seen some "low level" players with enormous numbers of games played, thousands. Are they quitting games on purpose to artificially keep their rank low? Is that a thing?
    2. Smurfs. Low ranked players with very low game count, with level 131 cities. What? I've been grinding to get to level 50 and they are maxed out somehow. I recently learn you can mod and cheat the game to get high cities so I assume that's the answer.
    3. Trolls. I've had one player build wall joints (like, the single posts of a wall) ALL over the map, then upgrade buildings/walls to a point where it takes mortars 5-10 volleys (i didn't count) to destroy. It turned out they were using them, basically, as spying points. So they could see where i was. It wasn't just that though, they were throwing villagers into my side of the map like crazy, just to build these wall posts. After awhile it just gets tedious and I know he was doing it to irritate me.

2.1) Trolls- why is it so damned popular to fast age up and literally spam falconets? I've had many players do this. Literally just falconets. Then they send a group of 4 to your villages and the rest attack your army with their invincibility. While you try to kill 10+ field guns at the front you realize 4 cannon suck back and fucked your economy. It's a stupid, stupid strategy. I lost to one troll who did this, and on the post-game I out-performed him in literally every area. But field guns achieve invincibility at some point and whole armies - even dragoons and hussars - are murdered by them. Hopefully they fix this in the remaster?

2.2) Trolls. Literally trolls. As in toxic, insulting, bullying, jerk trolls. Constantly.

2.3) Wall Spammers. Why is everyone obsessed with building 16 layers of walls? really ruins the fun of the game.

    3) Boring players. Seriously. I don't need "no rush". I like some action. But why is it that everyone tries so desperately to end the game with a rush at 6 minutes? What's the fun in ending games that fast? I can defend pretty well ( prefer Portuguese and double TC with upgrade can really disappoint an attacker lol) but my goodness what is the point of playing if we aren't going to enjoy the game longer than it took to find a match?

3.1) Boring players. Frenches and Ottomans. Why is it that 99% of players are one of two civs? Worse, 90% of games are on great plains with no deviation from that map. I get that it has 2 reliable treasures and predictable trade posts and other treasures etc., and that it's a handicap for ottomans, but come on! Lets play the dang game and enjoy the variety. Ottomans ALWAYS jannisary rush, and french either native rush or spam rush. Heck, i finally found a spanish player and what did he do? Surrounding my towns with outposts then spammed units. Same thing with a brit player. He build stables literally as close to my town as possible and just killed villagers early on, followed by an unstoppable manor boom.

Now before you tell me to 'git gud" , I am. I know these tactics can be beat if you catch them in time. However, my point is this...

is the player base really so toxic that nobody actually plays for fun? I remember the golden days and the community was, well, a community. It is so hard to find people that are fun to play with and who aren't helplessly obsessed with winning. Even a clan I joined turned out to be a bunch of dingbat trolls who were really, really toxic.

Rant over. From a new old player.....

Will AOE3: DE include balance changes?

It's in the tile, will the coming remake include anything in the way of balancing or game-play mechanics changes? Do we know?

    Best civs for natives?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 04:19 AM PDT

What are the ''best'' civs at utilising native trade posts?

usually every civ has some unique native card option or other schtick they can utilise but surely there's a set few that make the best out of them if somebody wants to make a tier list or something. I'll put some civs up for mention with some of their available quirks.

British: --manor boom for extra settlers and a more wood/food catering economy

French: --Solid economy with courier-des-bois --age3 card ''Native warrior combat'' gives a huge 25% hp/atk where usually upgrade cards only do 15% to a certain type of unit. --Wilderness warfare gives vils, skirms and natives +20% hp
--age2 TEAM Improved Native Warriors gives +15% hit points and attack --team cav/ranged inf +15% atk cards can also be used.

    spanish: Extra shipments

    russians/portuguese Extra villagers

TWC civs reveal all native trade post locations by default + warchief aura.

Iroquois: --Age3 25% hp/atk card --Team +30% train limit --Most unit upgrade cards apply to all units of type

Sioux: -85% native train time card good food gathering and no houses needed

Aztec: warpriests for optimal firepit usage for economy, shipments, dmg etc.

Indian: already wood heavy economy and the odd extra villager other interesting native cards Chinese: has access to both asian hp and atk cards which also include speed and train time

How do I get War Chiefs to work in my TAD-version of the AoE 3 'Complete Edition'?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:43 PM PDT

    Hey there,

So, I can launch AoE3, War chiefs OR Asian Dynasties, and they all work. But, my problem is that if I launch Asian Dynasties I only have access to the vanilla content, but not to any of the War Chiefs' content; e.g. civilizations and the campaign.

I tried launching either of them, but I have no idea how I am supposed to make the game recognize that I have War chiefs as well as TAD... Anyone knows how to fix it?

(After some googling I only came across an 'ancient' answer with an apparent fix, but that download link was broken. I also re-installed, then first launched vanilla -> wc -> tad)

    Cheers,
