You should not speed build drop-off points Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:08 PM PST Hey all, After doing my analysis of the shortest distance where building a new lumber camp makes sense, I had a thought about if speed building ever makes sense for drop-off points. After doing some thinking and for 2 cases, I think the answer is ... no, for particularly for non--huntables. Huntables vex the whole thing with their decaying. At most, you use 1 villager There are two common cases I can think of. 1, you are starting a new operation and are building a drop-off point with villagers with nothing in their inventory.
In the case of 1, instead of speed building the drop-off point, you could have your other villagers start gathering as they will likely not finish the active gathering part before the camp finishes building. At base 10 capacity, as long as the gather rate is 20 per minute, you will finish building the camp before the new villagers start on the return trip, Wheelbarrow is 26/min and Handcart 40/min This even applies for new mill and farm set-ups, because basically, a mill will always be finished before farmers get their first trip in If you are worried about cutting it close, you can throw in a second villager and drive it down to 22.5 seconds to make a camp. in the case of 2, adding a second villager means giving up 30 seconds of the old gather rate labor vs getting an early 7.5 seconds of the improved gather rate for having a nearby drop off point for all of your nearby lumberjacks, while giving up 7.5 seconds of the old gather rate. After 30 seconds of time, both the 2 builder and 1 builder set-up look the same, and have the same performance, because both have new lumbe camps at that point, and the same number of lumberjacks working (and not setting up a new lumber camp) I wrote this series of equations for wolfram alpha here to describe the trade off you make during the 30 seconds where the lumber camp could have been built. 30*P=(V+2)(7.5*N)-V(7.5*P), P is old gather rate, N is new gather rate, V is other villagers The left half represents resources the 30 seconds of the villager not being a second builder, and the left half has the wood gathered with the new gather rate (including the first and second builder going to chop wood) minus the wood they didn't gather using the old wood rate. Looking at this as a source of real wood gather rates regarding distance, I determined that chopping 3 tiles away was 90% as effective as nearby, so I decided to put in P = .9 and N =1 to capture that. ... I think there is a good mathy reason, but I should go to bed. wolfram solves for V, and gets me V=16, which means that you need to have 18 villagers working at that woodline in order to have speed building that lumber camp make sense. In other words, probably enough villagers that you have already sent them off to seperate woodlines to get better performance. tl;dr; speed building does not improve the payback for drop-off points, and for fresh drop-off points, extra builders could instead start on gathering, and just need the drop-off point as it gets finished by one worker, at least for generic civs. On average, the second builder is better doing old rate woodchopping unless there are 16 other villagers at the site. There might be a micro argument for speed building drop off points (it's just easier to micro), but that is a lot harder to quantify. ... at least for me. [link] [comments]
More descriptive room titles for more balanced games Posted: 13 Nov 2020 07:06 AM PST I'm tired of being kicked from everywhere, but I understand the main reason is that there is no consensus on the meaning of the word "noob". My ELO is around 1150 (1vs1) and 1850 (team game). I don't consider myself a noob, but I get kicked from "no noobs" games, where sometimes the host is way over my ELO. I also get kicked from "noob" games, because I am not a noob to them. Can't hosts just write "1800+" or whatever like everyone used to do in AOE2? It is way more practical for everyone, and games will be more balanced. [link] [comments]
Suggestion: Missionaries should be able to build Monastaries Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:15 AM PST Missionaries are rarely used. Allowing them to build monasteries (and only monasteries) creates a new strategy that let's you build forward monasteries without requiring villagers. It's also thematically and historically appropriate, since building missions was a central part of missionaries' strategy for reaching new areas with their message. [link] [comments]
For the love of god please respect pauses! Posted: 12 Nov 2020 12:45 PM PST I had multiple team matches today where the enemy just resumed immediately when we pause. My friend had issues with his mic and couldn't fix it through the entire game because they wouldn't let us pause. So please even if you are salty because you were lamed or lost the previous games, just be a fair player. Thanks :D [link] [comments]
Make AI take over if someone dc/resign early Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:58 PM PST Sometimes people resigns or DC, when a match is clearly NOT lost - maybe because they are under pressure, but doesn't see that the other players on the team actually pressure the enemy too - and their team is winning. It would be really nice if an AI took over in those cases, with a skill level that somewhat resemble the players ELO rating (or the AI level set in casual games) Then if all players on a team resign, the AI's on that team will resign too. What makes Aztecs one of the best civilizations in game ? Posted: 13 Nov 2020 05:59 AM PST Their eagles are completely generic in castle age and their crossbows are not even generic, missing thumb ring. Their monks are great but does that alone make them a great civ? They also have a steep drop off after early imperial age. I see them get picked first on every civ draft that pros do. What is the reason for their dominance ? Does that +5 carry capacity have such a huge significance? [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Nov 2020 08:51 PM PST I think they should add a reconnect button, especially for ranked.Sometimes my router chooses to restart by itself, and it's pretty damn annoying to lose everything you built up for an hour. [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST Hi, I would like to know the build order for land nomad for generic civ. I know it depends a lot on available resources. Lets say you found a woodline and gold near TC with 2 sheep, 4 deer and 1 boar. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Nov 2020 07:44 PM PST Hey guys just had my first 2+ hour game tonight and even though my buddy and I had to call the gg it was a blast. Hot Take:More soft criteria for a "defeat", Deserters Penality and a death to solo resigning Posted: 13 Nov 2020 07:29 AM PST Everyone has been there. 4v4, you queue with a friend. You wait a good 5-10 minutes for a match. One of the randoms gets flank. You and your friend are doing great against your opposition. But because said random lost 2 vills to an obvious scout rush, got his boar lamed or was surprisingly punished for building 5 TCs, he feels his ego crumbling as the dream of 60 FU elite longbows has been crushed. He leaves without saying a word. Doesn't matter if you killed 4 or 6 vills to your opponent. Doesn't matter if his pocket is popping off. He knows he will have to play from behind. His own happiness comes first, he resigns. So now youre there, 3v4. Unless the others flank is literally dead, its pretty much over now. Your team is usually most DEFINITELY pissed. And depending on the opponents, they either bathe in the salt or also sigh as a potentially balanced game is already over. I wouldn't say this situation is the majority, but it happens often enough to be a thorn in peoples side. The cause is 2 interlocked reasons: you cant "win" , the opponent decides when they lost. And there is no penalty for a single man deciding they lost to that boar in dark age. Fixing the first adds a fix for the second. If the game had a clear goal that can be achieved in a reasonable time and only by a team that holds the advantage, we could add both a vote for a team to resign and a penalty for those who refuse to play just because theyre a lil behind There of course comes a new question: what can be such a winning condition? AoE2 has 2 solutions of its own!....wonders and relic victory. Both are as subpar as it gets however, as even a losing team can rush 60 vills in a corner to rush up a wonder while spamming stone walls, trash and other nonsense. Relics go in a opposite direction, hiding 1 relic with 10 monasteries in the back of a base with monks randomly garrisoned makes for unfun gameplay, to say the least. So what other solution could there be? An idea i had was a kind of Map Control victory. If one team covers more then 70-80% of the map with their buildings LoS, its a win. Perhaps even adding a tech that makes outposts resistant to trash units and a bit tankier overall. That could work well on open maps, but how to cover more then half of BF in LoS? Of course, all these ideas come with their own merits. What aboit 3 man troll queues who just resign after 20 min in an even game? Should they cost a single outsider a match? Its an odd topic. I love this game, but the last couple attempts at matchmaking where bouncing between 15 minute games, insta resigns and queue drops. Is early resigning enough of a problem to require such drastic measurement? Or is my heart just fueled by a series of misfortune? [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:04 PM PST I've been around 950 ELO, gotten above 1000 a couple times in 1v1s, and lately I decided to just go walls and fast castle every game, practice the strategy. That's been good, I can successfully get to castle, get walled, usually deal with any early drush or man at arms ... and then lose the game lol. That's fine, I've been playing more to practice then to win, but where would the hivemind suggest I focus next? I know it depends, but is there a good practice route I could follow that builds on what I know? So far I can do fast castle and I've had some success with a pure archers build, but I've struggled to add pieces to that. Usually playing Byzantines or Britons. Or go something like Teutons/Slavs/Celts if I draw Arena and wreck shop because I've spent so much time practicing fast castle lol. Edit: thanks for the advice! Next game was Arabia again, walled up and went FC while easily defending from a scout rush, then as soon as I hit castle age got out a few knights and camels. Cleared up the scouts and went to their base to do some raids, picking off a few vils here and there. Eventually they started going xbow, but by then I had three TCs and could make skirms and more knights. Then they came at me with Frank castles but I was able to get to imp faster, presumably due to the raiding, so I got a couple trebs out and was able to push into his base. It definitely felt worth it to practice FB so long, since I was comfortable with that I could focus on where to send units and try to raid with knights. Definitely not the cleanest game but a good start trying a new strategy! [link] [comments] |
