Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 10 Week 18: Byzantines vs Mayans Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:46 PM PST First discussion of the year, last one of round 10! That means each civ (except the Last Khans ones) has had 10 discussions so far :) Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Chinese vs Japanese, and next up is the Byzantines vs Mayans! Byzantines: Defensive civilization
Mayans: (Foot) Archer civilization
Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!
Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will begin round 11 with the Persians vs Khmer. Hope to see you there! :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:27 AM PST Since there are many new players not that familiar with the pro scene of the last years, I decided to collect some of the best games I can think of. I tried to balance the players and teams. If possible I used the video link to whoever organized the game/tournament. Please add your favourites in the comments. Map: ES@Seasons_v2 One of the earliest pro games available, I decided to include this for its curiosity. Crazy castle age warfare with forward tcs, petards and Goths going for cav archers. The Sheriff was also involved in the first strategy guides released for AoE 2. [SY] Mr. Yo: Ethiopians, Lyx: Slavs [Secret] TheViper: Ethiopians, Slam: Aztecs Map: Gorge This was played in the huge EscapeAoE Champions League. At the time Mr. Yo was not very succesful for a long time. In the Africa 2 vs 2 section he went absolute beast mode, something we saw in the latest World Cup as well, which he played with Lyx too. Map: Arena One of the craziest defensive plays I ever witnessed in all the years watching AoE. The thumbnail speaks for itself.
Map: Meatballs The end of a legendary series with Jordan23, who recently came back to pro play, and the snake going head to head. They battled it out until the insane decider game 21.
Map: Arabia Nobody favoured the Lord in this matchup. Liereyy was maybe on the height of his game, being very successful in 2020 and actually preparing for tournaments. But the Lord took him to the decider. And for the decider he delivered an absolute masterpiece.
Map: Aztlan This is the day where Mr. Yo became Viper's arch enemy. Before this he usually got outclassed by Viper in tournament games (with some exceptions). But from the RBW1 finals on he continued to do very well, winning on several occasions. In this game he was about to have a hard time against the Viper, because with Indians he will have an insane food income from the shore fish in the middle. This meant he had to play super aggressive, and he delivered. Even holding with a feudal age army against castle age units for some minutes. At first the community was sceptical towards the Empire Wars mode but it has proven to produce insane fast paced games.
[Secret] TheViper: Cumans, TatoH: Goths, DauT: Koreans [aM] Liereyy: Malay, Hera: Tatars, MbL: Indians Map: Donut If I had to choose the best series ever, this is maybe it. Hours of top level play with interesting civs, strats and maps. This is game 4, where the aggression starts at minute 8 and culminates in Hera and MbL desperately trying to hold a slung goth spam while the Lord pushes the kid with towers and war wagons.
Map: Arabia Liereyy "da keed" (as memb would say) needed to make something happen after being down 3:0 in the finals. The young prodigy (I think he was about 15 at the time) showed the AoE world what he could do in this insanely aggressive game against the best player ever.
An instant classic, as Yo and Liereyy were the survivors of a branch of death (Hera, Viper, Yo and Liereyy all being in the same branch) and battled the spot in the finals out until the last drop of blood. This game is an dramatic back and forth with action all over the map that has it all.
[aM] Liereyy: Slavs, Hera: Teutons, MbL: Turks [Suomi] Zuppi: Saracens, TheMax: Goths, Villese: Celts Map: Oasis For the decider game of their 3v3 series these crazy teams delivered a 3 hour game. It is only 3 vs 3 but it feels like a 8 vs 8, as the map is just completely littered with units and corpses for hours. They are pushing back and forth, and at one point the defensive plays in this game rival the one from Viper's #8. [link] [comments]
If you like playing the campaigns... Posted: 06 Jan 2021 03:08 AM PST ..check out the huge amount of high quality custom scenarios available out there. Some of you probably know of this but judging from some comments on u/OrnLu528 YouTube videos (great work man, by the way), some don't know the amount of content awaiting for them on the Mod game screen (which has been made even less accessible with the new UI). Some of these custom scenarios are quiet original in their mechanics, and play quiet differently from the normal AOE game, others are quiet similar to your typical campaign scenario game. If you don't know what to choose, you can start by checking out these three creators that do great work :
The majority of the scenarios designed by these three creators have been played on video by u/Ornlu528 and u/Kanye_TWest, two great AOE YouTubers who focus on campaigns. [link] [comments]

Drunken Forest - A 4v4 BF $$2,400++ tourney Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:16 AM PST I saw the signup thread on aoezone so I am sharing it here for the reddit community (don't think anyone has shared it here). I used to love late night BF on Voobly and hope this tournament can give us some some crazy games with tower rushes, sneaks, Aztec smushes, and Turk fast imp strategies. https://www.aoezone.net/threads/drunken-forest-a-4v4-bf-2-400-tourney-signup-here.172248/ [link] [comments]
How does Mayans longer lasting resource bonus works when you share same resources with your ally? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:15 AM PST When Mayans and any generic civ mines same goldpile, how much gold does each player gather at the end if both have same eco upgrades. My guess are that Mayan player will gather less than other, however total gold mined my both player will be more than 850 (total gold in a single goldpile, i guess). However it's just a guess. I would love some facts. Thanks [link] [comments]
How to play slavs / especially in late game? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:38 AM PST Hey all, I've been playing aoe2 for a bit now. I Know the basics, and I've learned a build order by hard for my favorite civs Mayans and Mongols. Now I want a change of pace and Slavs looks interesting, but I have a couple of questions. 1) How are they in the late game? I'm still below average - average so games tend to last very long. 2) how hard are they to play? They're mostly siege/infantry, but siege still seems very out of my league. I've only done the siege ram spam or trebs for castles... 3) what are tough counter civs for them? My friend and brother play Franks and Britons. I'd still like to beat them :D! 4) This is what confuses me the most: what unit compositions do I play? Especially late game? I know mayans: archers, EW, Plumed Mongols: mangudai, hussars But with slavs I don't seem to have an end goal idea in what units I should focus on. I think these are my questions for now. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:43 AM PST A guy called Heroic from israel https://aoe2.net/#profile-1481745 desyncs the game when he is losing. Happened to my friends and I on 3 separate occasions, most recently 3min ago on ranked Arena. Anything we can do other than the obviously useless report function? [link] [comments]
Play old patch versions for DE Posted: 06 Jan 2021 04:42 AM PST Is it possible to play on some of the older patches for single player such as when the cumans were first released. I would like to see for myself just how strong they were? [link] [comments]
Stat-wise, there is a strong argument for nerfing the Franks Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:08 AM PST I want to preface this by saying I have no personal beef with the Franks. They're not a loathed matchup of mine and I have no problem with facing them. Recently though, I was made aware how obscenely skewed the stats are surrounding the Franks compared to other civs. Here's some facts for you guys: -The Franks are the only civ to have over a 50% winrate amongst their lowest winrate against stats. Nothing about the matchup screams "Franks should be strong here" and infact it's the opposite. The Franks are performing well against all kinds of matchups, including those where we would expect them to be sub-optimal. I also can't say for certain, but I believe several weeks ago they had a 50%+ winrate against a different civ on their lowest winrate list. -Their lowest winrate win ratios are consistently good across all ELOs. It's not a phenomenon where the Franks are destroying at lower ELOs at something, but rather they have a solid performance at every single level without exception. Even if you wished to argue there's limited data at the top level, the next level doesn't look much different. -There is no clear pattern with civs they do poorly against across ELOs. This suggests that the Franks do not actually have a bad matchup and their "lowest winrate against" civs are partially chance-based. The closest pattern you find is that their worst matchups are A) other top-tier civs, or B) other good cavalry civs. I do not think matching poorly against other top-tier civs with no clear pattern as opposed to struggling against civ X or Y is really convincing that they're not strong. Patterns mean a civ has a weakness against another civ, but the patterns for the Franks are very weak/soft. -Of the 34 other civs in the game, Franks are on the "lowest winrate against" list for 17 of the 34 civs, so 50%. (filtering by All; wanted to get a sample rather than thumbing through every damned category) This means half the roster has some of their most frequent losses against the Franks. -The Franks have the highest winrate in every ELO category, the only exception being sub-1000, where they just barely get beaten by Bulgarians and take 2nd place instead. With Bulgarians it's worth mentioning their winrate dramatically drops the higher you climb, making them a statistically noob-friendly civ that otherwise lacks options. Franks however are consistently the best in every level of play. -The Franks are overwhelmingly the most played civ, ranking at a whopping 8.27%, with the next highest being the Mayans at 5.57%. One could make a strong argument people flock to the strongest civs (look at Cumans during DE's release) and Franks are an absolutely ridiculous outlier on play rate, with most civs getting 2-3% playrate. -Have consistently been ranked a top tier civ since the dawn of time itself. This in and of itself isn't a problem as of course there will always be a civ considered to be the best, I merely felt stating that there isn't any pro player or casual commentator who believes the Franks to be bad. It is overwhelmingly agreed upon they are top-tier. The issue isn't so much in being top-tier, but as the other points highlight, the extent to which they're top-tier might be flying under the radar....somehow. -Grab the Franks and go through the ELOs and they have 48-50% winrates in every ELO, with only two matchups in total ever dipping below 40%. (Japanese at 1650+ and Indians at sub-1000) Hell, in most cases they don't even drop below 45% winrate. Do this with any other civ and it doesn't compare. You can find select ELOs where for example the Celts might have similar looking stats, but only the Franks consistently have such solid numbers across the board. Again, I have no horse in this race, so my goal with posting this wasn't to say "OMG NERF THEM NOW," I simply happened to notice the stats are absolutely damning and they look like a ridiculous outlier with far better rates than other civs, and I felt it was worth discussing. Some people might show up and highlight X or Y flaw with the stats for example, or perhaps unbeknownst to me, the Franks might have a modest winrate when you collectively gather their performances across various tournaments. But as stated, it's about generating discussion: Are we okay with a civ being this overwhelmingly dominant stat-wise? Is there evidence against these points that actually showcases the Franks as being modestly powerful instead of being as strong as believed? Should the Franks be nerfed, or is this okay as it stands? If so, why? [link] [comments]

Siege of Constantinople on DE? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 01:56 AM PST Hi, I recently found out about the Siege of Constantinople scenario for aoe2 and got really intrested. Hera´s MAA into 1 range build question Posted: 06 Jan 2021 03:53 AM PST Hi guys, I am practicing this build a lot and I feel like I am doing most of the things right. The thing is, he clicks Castle at 16:58, I usually manage to click it at 17:35. I did not play AOE2 on Voobly so I am curious, whether this time Hera did is still possible in DE. Thanks. Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:10 AM PST Recently I've started facing a bug wherein some of my campaigns don't seem to progress. By that I mean that I finish a scenario and then, not only does the next one not appear for continuing the campaign, but usually all the other unlocked campaign scenarios also disappear and I'm right back to the first one (as if I'd never even begun the campaign). This isn't universal either - some campaigns, like Bari, Alaric and Sforza, are acting up, while others, like Kotyan Khan, Pachacuti and Barbarossa aren't giving issues (so far...). I've tried looking this bug up and did find some other, older, posts mentioning a similar problem (especially with the HD version), but none of them found a solution other than to just cheat through each mission in order to advance. I don't like doing that, but moreover it's also not a permanent solution - the problem just recurs again later, so I'd have to cheat through to whichever scenario I want in future once more. And of course, I've already tried restarting the game, reloading a save to finish the scenario again, etc. Is anyone aware of any permanent solutions to the problem? Or even some insight into why it's happening to begin with, or even why it seems to be affecting the campaigns so unevenly? [link] [comments]
What if, the market was a castle age building Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:05 AM PST This way feudal preassure would be higher, and you would be forced to at least make a military building [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2021 05:26 AM PST I've been playing AOE2 since when I was a kid. Sadly no amount of campain can prepare you for the online scene, although I've tried the arabia open style play I really detest dark age and feudal agression, I dislike messy games like that with the exception of nomad. So naturally Arena works for me, however my past 3-5 games have been identical, in team arena I'll have my opponent go fast caste into a castle drop, while his duo goes fast imp and then works towards a treb to counter my defensive castle. Is there a good way to prevent the castle drop itself? I mean I could add a stables and start pumping out scouts before castle age, however this is a gamble on it's own, if they decide to boom I'm stuck in feudal with a bunch of scouts. So TLDR: How to deal with fast castle drop in arena team games? I don't instantly lose as I can defend with my own castle but I have no follow up, nor a way to prevent the drop without gambling on scouts in feudal [link] [comments] |
