"What do a people who sleep in tents know of the word 'culture'?" - Jin, moments before annihilation

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Khmer vs Persians, and next up is the Chinese vs Mongols!

    Chinese: Archer Balanced civilization

    • Start with +3 Villagers; but -50w, -200f
    • Techs cost -10/15/20% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Town Centers support 10 population and have +5 LoS
    • Demo Ships +50% hp
    • TEAM BONUS: Farms +45f
    • Unique Unit: Chu Ko Nu (Powerful foot archer that rapid-fires multiple arrows)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Great Wall (Walls and Towers +30% hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Rocketry (Chu Ko Nu +2 attack; Scorpions +4 attack)

    Mongols: Cavalry Archer civilization

    • Cav Archers fire +25% faster
    • Light Cavalry, Hussars, and Steppe Lancers +30% hp
    • Hunters work +40% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Scout-line +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Mangudai (Something something no counter)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Nomads (Destroyed Houses do not decrease max pop)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Drill (Siege Workshop units move +50% faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Oh this should be a fun one! For 1v1 open maps, Chinese are generally considered to be among the very best civs out there, due to their very strong economy throughout the game, broad tech tree, and an excellent power-unit in the Chu Ko Nu. Mongols, however, are no slouches themselves, and although they are usually not considered to be top-tier, they are still a solid civ in their own right. They have the opportunity to strike very fast before Chinese can get their eco up and running, and moreover run them down in Imperial Age with Mangudai and siege. Is that enough to survive the Chinese midgame though?
    • On closed maps, both civs feel very strong in the right situations, but both have very noticeable weaknesses as well. Chinese can still flex their excellent eco and strong army composition of Chu Ko Nu, Siege Rams, Halbs, and BBTs, but they also critically lack any decent answer to Siege Onager. Meanwhile, Mongols have the late-game doom army of Mangudai and siege, but really lack any sort of midgame to help get them there. Who do you favor on maps like Arena, Hideout, and BF?
    • In team games, both civs are solid pockets, but not exactly amazing. Chinese would definitely rather be flank, and Mongols probably would prefer that as well. That said, Chinese are easily one of the best flanks out there with their aforementioned strong archers and eco. Meanwhile, Mongols are able to put out pressure faster, and ultimately end with a more powerful and more mobile army. Which civ do you favor here?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Ethiopians vs Malians. Hope to see you there! :)

''Age Of Empires 1: Definitive Edition''- how it should be created

Hello everybody. While I am aware this is the AOE2 subreddit, I would like to talk about the first game in the series which hasn't aged well and should be given better treatment. How do you think an AOE1 remake would be if it had all the gameplay improvements and quality of life additions that the sequel (both the original version and the Definitive Edition) have? Would you like the civilizations to be rearranged while having more architectural styles and cultures (made a list and posted images below) included? Please tell me if this post is bothering people and I would gladly delete it. PS: the * symbol denotes that either a single culture or a whole building style is newly introduced, while the # symbol denotes that this culture is the one after which the singleplayer campaign (tutorial included) is based.

Long, shitty Thread Speculating Future DLC

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:50 PM PST

I stole this conspiracy theory from /u/Acoasma

tl;dr: we're going to see more DLCs structured like Lords of the West: 2 new civs for existing architecture sets, a campaign for each, and a third campaign for a civ that doesn't have one, plus random maps, eye candy, and whatnot. The new civs will be the Lichthensteiners, Maltese Poodles, the Polonnaruwans, and your mom.

    .

    .

I know 1 DLC doesn't set a precedent but this is a really weird expansion. Consider the following...

1 - If Lords of the West is successful, they will make probably make more, similar DLCs

2 - They didn't introduce new architecture set; adding new civs and campaigns based on current sets is a cost effective way to create new content to sell.

3 - Sicilians and Burgundians are very specific civs and one can easily argue that they're already covered by existing civs (there are Burgundian Dukes in the Frank pool of AI names, and Sicily today is a part of Italy). Think about it like this: does this make sense as the last ever Expansion or the first of a new chain of expansions?

4 - Forgotten Empires Ltd has been following a sort of "road map" laid out by Ensemble Studios'.. FE loosely did an region based expansions on Africa and India, and The Forgotten expansion is almost like a Director's Cutof The Conquerors, but I guess not since a completely different Director took over? Anyway, oddly enough when choosing civs for The Conquerors, Sandy Peterson wanted to add civs to each existing architecture set. Maybe that's the next few miles in the "road map."

Anyway, I've been calling this shit since DE came out, I was calling it in spite of some of you fucks propagating the "devs said they won't add any new civs" meme, and as a matter of fact I called it like the day before the DLC was announced. This thread is me calling the next few DLCs so I can win harder than I already was. I am 34 years old and live with my mother.

The list of civs in each architecture set is based on my opinion of likelihood.

    Central Europe: Bohemians, Poles, Lombards

    • The Burgundians and Sicilians prove that very specific civs can be "separated" out from an existing civ. AI Players using the Slavs have a bunch of Bohemian and Polish rulers at their disposal, but Tamerlane was picked out of the Mongols AI Player List and given to the Tatars so there's that. Also Charles the Bold and Phillip the Good will probably be plucked out of the Frankish AI Player List and given to the Burgundians.

    • Anyway, the Bohemians IMO are one of the most likely because a campaign about the Hussites is way too good to pass up. The Koreans have a War Wagon but the developers can call their UU a "Tabor" or "Hussite Wagon" with a distinct sprite. A Bohemian campaign would either be about Jan Zizka or the Hussite Wars in general like the Bari Campaign or the Grand Dukes of the West. Maybe it can be about Good King Wenceslaus I (who, funny enough, is a Teuton AI Player).

    • The Poles are probably the most likely civ to get included in general but the Bohemians as a new Central European civ and the Poles as the new Eastern European civ makes the most sense. The inclusion of either "West Slav" civ kind of depends on how the developers would deal with a Caucasus civ (Armenians or Georgians or, longshot, Alans), which I feel is almost guaranteed. It would be weird if the Catholic Lithuanians, Poles, and Magyars outnumber the Orthodox Slavs and Bulgarians while they all use an Orthodox Monastery but whatever.

    • The Lombards sound weird but originally Cysion, Product Manager of Forgotten Empires, wanted to put the Lombards in the game instead of the Italians...or more accurately, he may have had the Italians named as the Lombards possibly in kind of a Byzantine vs Romans/Greek situation.

Eastern Europe: Poles, Armenians, Georgians, Romanians

    • A Polish campaign would probably be about Boleslaus or Casimir.

    • In case the developers go with Poles for Central Europe and not Bohemians, I think Eastern Europe will probably have a Caucasian civ. That's not accurate to their IRL architecture but it's the closest that exists.

    • A Vlad Dracul campaign makes the Romanians awkward but they have completely overhauled campaigns already so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

    3rd Campaign: Lithuanians

    • Probably King Vytautas the Great or Gediminas.

    .

    .

    L O R D S _ O F _ S O M E _ R E A L L Y _ H O T _ P L A C E S

    Middle East: Georgians, Armenians, Nubians

    • Georgians appear in the Tamerlane campaign played by the Persians. They could have been Byzantines like the Armenians but the developers were fine with the Persians, so I think there is a possibility of them being a "Middle Eastern" civ. Ideally, they would create a new arch set based on the Byzantines, add the Georgians and/or Armenians to it, and then also maybe the Bulgarians but that's not likely.

    • A Georgian campaign would probably center on Queen Tamar or maybe David the Builder.

    • The Armenians and Georgians, from the perspective of limiting civs and gameplay, are kind of interchangeable.

Africa: Songhai, Kongolese, Nubians, Somalis, Swahili

    • IMO, the Songhai are the most likely because the developers could have put in Songhai rulers in the Malian AI players name list or given them a Songhai UU or Unique Tech but they didn't. The Malians did get a UU from a people known as the Dahomey, so IMO that's a clue that the developers specifically excluded the Songhai from the Malian design. Their campaign would probably be about Askia the Great.

    • Sandy Peterson once shared his outline for an African expansion featuring Songhai, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Kongo on the AOKHeavengames Forum; the Malians seem like an obvious miss but he also stated the Ghana would have their "famous female warriors" which sounds like the inspiration for the Gbeto.

    • The Nubians have a built-in UU (Archer of the Eyes) and it would make sense for them "bridge" the gap between the Ethiopians and Arabs, and then they could probably go back to the Yodit campaign and make some of the AI players use the Nubians.

    3rd Campaign: Turks

    • This could go to either Persians or Turks but I think that Persia thematically fits the next expansion better. Campaign would probably be about Mehmed the Conqueror so we can finally have an official Siege of Constantinople or Suleiman the Magnificent.

    .

    .

    L O R D S _ O F _ T H E _ K I N D _ O F _ E A S T

Central Asia: Khazars, Tajiks, Alans, Afghans

    • The Cumans have a few Khazar AI names but that can be easily remedied. Shit, they could just remake the Cuman Wonder as a full, actual building and boom, instant new civ. I don't really see any other options for a new civ here...but uh, I honestly have no idea what campaign would be here.

    • Tajiks could work out really well, and the developers could take Mahmud of Ghazni and Mohammed of Ghor away from the Persian AI Players list. Mahmud makes the most sense as a Tajik campaign or maybe Qutb Ad-Din Aibak. The Tajiks would represent the long history of Turco-Persianate states in Central Asia and India. They could even rep the Mughals.

    • The Alans sounds really weird but Cysion originally intended for the Scythians to get into the game instead of the Slavs. He determined that they would be too out of place but the closely related Alans would not be out of place. The Alans founded a kingdom in the Caucasus that lasted until the 1100s and their descendents, the Ossetians, still live there to this day. Now, if the Georgians get in they could do a campaign about George Soslan, probably the most famous Alan, and Queen Tamar of Georgia, and then do a Georgian campaign about David the Builder.

    • An Afghan civ based on Sher Shah Suri's Empire could also work.

South Asia: South Indian civ "Tamil" or East Indian civ "Bengals"

    • The Indian Wonder is South Indian but they've changed the Wonder before. Rajendra Chola is an AI Player for them, but again, they can move that name; in fact, Rajendra Chola is probably the best campaign for a Tamil civ.

    3rd Campaign: Persians

    • Khosrow I, Bahram Chobin, 'Adud al-Dawla, or Abu Muslim

    .

    .

    L O R D S _ O F _ T H E _ A C T U A L _ E A S T

    Southeast Asia: Thais

    • These guys were sort of represented by the Khmer but not overtly so. Campaign would be about Naresuan, the guy on the cover art of the game who toppled Bayinnaung's Emperor (well, it was ruled by Bayinnaung's son at the time). By the way, Suryavarman's hero unit portrait is the same as the cover art guy, which means he's technically Suryavarman but the freaking armor is Thai armor from the 1500s and the cover art matches depictions of Naresuan in Thai cinema. The cutscenes accurately portray contemporary Khmer fashion and equipment, though, making the hero unit icon an even more puzzling choice.

    East Asia: Tibetans

    • Okay this is a controversial one. I've spoken to Chinese AoE2 players and they say that medieval Tibet is okay, and they cite popular Tang Dynasty period dramas that feature an independent Tibetan Empire. Now, I'm not Chinese but I haven't been able to find any evidence independently; I've scoured cast listings for these dramas and I could not find a single character who has a Tibetan name, and I can't find episode guides to see if Tibet is mentioned. So I can't confirm this (and I've been potentially misinforming people this subreddit).

    • There is ONE piece of Chinese media that I managed to find about independent Tibet and it's CCP propaganda about Princess Wencheng, a distant niece of Tang Dynasty co-founder Emperor Taizong. Wencheng married the first Tibetan Emperor, Songsten Gampo, and in Chinese propaganda she's depicted as the embodiment of the Sinicization of Tibet. The media I'm referring to is a pretty wild musical about the barbarian Songsten Gampo going to China to pay homage to the Emperor at court and falling in love with Princess Wencheng, who then brings new agricultural methods and writing and metallurgy shit to Tibet. Even more wild is that this state-sponsored stage show is shown in Tibet's capital of Lhasa. Anyhow, Tibet is depicted as independent but subordinate to China in this.

    • Sooooo the most surefire way this civ could work is if there's no mention of modern Tibet...which is fine, the History section has the Chinese civilization "ending" in 1614, the Celts "ending" in 1500, and the Japanese in 1348 despite showing the Battle of Yamazki/Kyoto in 1582. There should probably no mention of the lamas, which is also fine since the institution was founded in the 1400s. Much trickier is a way to show Tibet as subordinate to China.

    • The campaign would likely be about Songsten Gampo. There are other Tibetan Emperors who could work, but Gampo is the founder of the Empire, had the least conflict with China, and you could have his marriage to Princess Wengcheng as a major event...in fact, that would probably be required. She would have to be credited in a cutscene with bringing some new technology to Tibet. She probably wouldn't teach them fucking blacksmithing but at least maybe she could bring improved papermaking tech, which is more true. You'd also probably have to have a line of dialog of Songsten Gampo apologizing to Emperor Taizong for attacking his territory.

    3rd Campaign: Most likely Chinese

    • Campaign would be about Taizong the Great. Japanese campaign could be about Nobunaga or Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and the Korean campaign would be about Admiral Yi or King Sejeong the Great. IMO, a Chinese campaign is more likely because Admiral Yi Sun Shin is already in a scenario and so is Nobunaga. I

ANYWAY, if Tibet doesn't work, alternately we could get...

Actually, I don't think they're gonna touch on the Americas. One of the most fan-requested civs is the Iroquois and they'd have to create a whole new architecture set there.

If they DO hit the Americas, then maybe they'll do a Mayan campaign and the new civ would be...I have no idea. Let's look at some possibilities:

    • Mapuche: My personal favorite since they're basically the only Indigenous Americans who beat the Spanish. I think they'd be the favorite for a new American civ because they're in Civilization VI, have an obvious campaign, and they have interesting gameplay possibilities since they stole guns and horses from the Spanish. Including them would also balance out South America. The campaign could feature the Mapuche beating the Inca at the Battle of the Maule River as a prologue of sorts, then the main meat of the campaign could be about Lautaro where he dies in the 5th scenario, and then decades later his "successor" Palantaro defeats the Spanish in the Battle of Curalaba.

    • Tlaxcalans: This sounds overly specific but it's just as specific as Sicilians. Also maybe we'd finally get actual Nahutal voice clips (did you know the Aztecs speak some bizarre Mayan language in AoE2?). Anyway, the reason why this might be a possibility is you'd represent the hybrid Spanish-Indigenous American societies and armies that conquered the Americas for Spain. You'd get Eagles, Knights, and Hand Cannoneers working together. Main downside is the campaign hero would probably have to be a Spaniard.

    • Tarascans: Pretty unlikely as they have no name recognition but the Tarascans were the major rival of the Aztec Empire and their monumental architecture was even crazier than that of the Aztecs.

    .

This is more likely than an Americas expansion. This would be a campaign pack with all of the civs missed earlier.

    • Vikings: Harald Hardrada or Cnut the Great

    • Mayans: Tecun Uman, Guatemalan National Hero

    • Magyars: maybe Louis the Great or Arpad

    • Slavs: Alexander Nevsky

    TWO OF THE FOLLOWING

    • Japanese: Yoshitsune no Minamoto

    • Koreans: Sejeong the Great

    • Chinese: Emperor Taizong

    What’s the game like?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:44 PM PST

I've been playing a lot of Warcraft 3 lately. But in the current state it's in I thought I should go take a break from it. (RIP). I was suggest aoe2 since it was similar gameplay wise. So if I would to get it what should I expect? Are the campaign story there own thing? How's the custom content? Can I be Scottish with big sword

Arena or Arabia - where are you more comfortable and why?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:20 PM PST

The two most popular maps according to AOEStats. Do you prefer the safe start of Arena or the open action of Arabia?

I'm curious how r/aoe2 feels. Sharing your Elo, main civ, and why you prefer one versus the other is highly encouraged!

Edit: I'm finding it suuuper interesting that most comments say Arena but most votes say Arabia 🤔 I guess Arabia players aggressively rush the vote button and Arena players like to have their positions nicely defended?

    Tips on Monk micro?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:02 AM PST

Hi, I want to start using monks in my gameplay but I can't find any helpful youtube videos or guides on how to micro them.
Do I just highlight all my monks and right click one enenmy knight to convert, or do I have to do each monk individually?
Also, will afk monks automatically heal and convert? or do i always need to keep managing them?

    Accused of hacking

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:32 PM PST

So, yesterday me and my boys were playing our usual TG's and in our last game of the night we came accross a certain player that accused me personally (orange player) of hacking.

We were playing Scandinavia 3v3, this player and me were opposing flanks. I picked Mongols to go for a fast Scout Rush thanks to hunting bonus. I was able to infiltrate him as he was walling and take some vills. Rightly so he was Goths so we needed to slow him down.
Later in the game the opposing team decides to put all pressure on my flank, castle dropping my base which I was forced to evacuate.

However I was still floating some resources so I could escape with some cavaliers in Imp, to try and harrass a bit while my team mates were cleaning up the opposing team.

So they resign, but first accuse me of using hacks and he would report me for it. Then he called us 'German nazis'and resigned.

My question now is: I am positive I did not use any hacks, should I fear a ban from the game?

How to improve mentality and different aoe2 skills

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:27 PM PST

I don't post here often, but I thought this is worth a share, because I've been wanting to finish this for weeks now. I don't see a lot of this content on youtube for aoe2, which is focusing on how to be a self-coach and improve own mentality as well as various generic skills in the game.

I hope some people can find it helpful.
