I'm working on an Age of Empires inspired RTS for Android!

I'm working on an Age of Empires inspired RTS for Android!

Hello everybody! I don't post here frequently, but I've been a fan of RTS games since I was a kid. I grew up with AoE2 and Stronghold, (it's great that the latter is getting more recognition thanks to T90!) and still continue to play RTS games to this day. From Age of Empires 2: DE to Total War, I can't really get enough of them.

    https://preview.redd.it/4tu56zztnta61.png?width=715&format=png&auto=webp&s=da45ad972754974ce78b79b6bbf0a2454a980929

Which led me to ask, "hey, why not play an RTS on my phone when I'm not at home?" I figured it must be a saturated genre, after all, there's so many ads on Youtube that use Age of Empires videos to falsely advertise their idle clicker game. I was shocked then, as you might expect, to find that Rusted Warfare was really the only true RTS game on the Play Store. With more of a focus on fast paced micromanagement, I couldn't really get into it since I'm primarily into the Medieval period.

To remediate this, a few weeks ago, I began putting my programming skills towards a basic RTS for mobile devices. That said, Empires Apart (and decades of RTS games flopping) has taught us that making an RTS is no small task; in order to have an RTS run on a mobile device, concessions have to be made, and with that in mind, I decided to develop the project as a single-player only game with a slower (more economic) pace than Age of Empires, while still maintaining the real-time aspect.

I work full-time to make end's meet, and after a rough patch at work, I've decided I'm unhappy with only being able to pursue my dreams as a sideline gig. I refuse to let this project die because I spend more than 40 hours a week draining myself. My significant other convinced me, to my hesitance, to share this project with the world, and one of the first places I figured I'd share it, was here.

I am not great at showing off my work, so I'm slowly building up a portfolio of sorts with images and videos, so bare with me. Since this is a project for me, but also for RTS fans in general, your feedback is very important, and receiving that feedback is going to go very far in helping me get this to where I want to get it.

Currently working features: (tested on an LG v60, LG G6, Samsung Note 9, and Google Pixel 2) Of course, the project also builds for Windows and has support for keyboard & mouse.

    - Touch Controls : Support for two finger panning, zooming, and rotation, as well as single unit selection (single finger tap), box unit selection (single finger tap-and-drag), and unit actions (double-tap). No two tapping because I don't like it.

    - Unit rendering : Models are animated using vertex interpolation, because of this, even mid-range Android devices can have thousands of units moving on-screen at any one time and maintain 60 FPS.

    - Fog of War : Units and buildings can scout the terrain, with fog of war that handles unexplored terrain and terrain that's been previously explored. Objects that have been previously seen will remain in the fog of war until the player scouts the area again, as in Age of Empires.

    - Resource Collection : Units can collect resources. Unlike Age of Empires, I've been tinkering around with the idea of individual Townhalls maintaining their own resource pool, relying on the player to trade between Townhalls to move resources around. (like Stronghold's estate system)

    - Unit Selection / Movement : Due to performance limitations, units do not have full collision. Simple algorithms run to keep units from overlapping as much as possible, but some overlap is unavoidable with Android hardware. To that end, I've worked to improve navigation as much as I can to prevent this overlapping. More time to work on the project would allow more time to work on this perhaps most important obstacle to RTS gameplay.

    - Unit Attack / Health / Death : Units have health, die, and auto-attack when nearby units (or themselves) are attacked. Units prioritize more powerful enemies, but I am working on a custom prioritization system to allow the player to define which unit types they want selected units to prioritize.

    - Constructing Buildings

    - Unlocking / Researching Technologies

    - Mini-Map is partially~ working

Friendly fire is just for debugging, lol

Additionally, if you make 3D content, 2D art, or sound/music, please contact me, I'd love to have others join the team; particularly if you do Adlib / Soundblaster music! The project goes for a mid-90s DOS art-style and thus simulates 2D sprites though I primarily use 3D assets due to the far easier workflow.

If you're interested in supporting the project, I (again, at the recommendation of my significant other) have opened up a Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/EftsithSoftware to allow users to see my progress. If interest is high, I'd love to get a Discord open or something, but really, I don't really know if this is something people like. Additionally, if you just have ideas, concepts for an RTS you'd love to see, I am looking for interesting gameplay mechanics to look into as well!

    Coaching (up to 2k)

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:44 AM PST

I'm offering personal AoE 2:DE lessons for anyone who wants to improve short or long-term, with guaranteed progress.

A small introduction to my sellout here, I've been been around the AoE 2 online scene for about 8 years. I'm currently sitting at around 2k Elo in 1v1s. (you can look me up on the ladder) I've started doing coaching in Aug last year on Fiverr. Since then, I've had around 20 clients, some of which came back for more, and 150+ hours of coaching.

The prices are as they are on Fiverr, but if you wish to do the coaching directly, without Fiverr, I will offer a 25% discount. 1 hour free for anyone who's new.

What do you want from an AoE2: DE competition organizing API?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:59 AM PST

Hi everyone, hope you are keeping well.

I'm a software development hobbyist and I am building an Age of Empires 2 API (to serve information about everything in the game, as JSON objects). All my routes are done so I just have to add the data (which is as tedious as you imagine) and I was thinking I could add a module that takes user's input and returns a ready-organized Age of Empires 2 competition.

Say you wish to have a small tournament with another 7 of your friends (in an ideal world, yes, we all have more than 1 friend that we got stuck up with from our daily job). What you do, you go to my website, fill in a form real quick, you hit Generate and you get a response which says who is playing against who, and with what civilizations.

However, my problem is that I have never hosted, organized, participated in or watched AoE2 tournaments so I have no clue how do they work. What kind of information is requested and what kind of information needs to be returned. So, would anyone suggest or know how could this work? Or if it's even handy or useful? I always wanted to get into some sort of competitional AOE2, like local tournaments so for me, the ability to quickly organize a competition would be handy.

    Many thanks :)

    Dan

Why I don’t like the idea of DLC for AoE2 DE

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:11 AM PST

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion. I mean yes, having more content and more campaigns is good and the design of the new units looks really cool but there are two main issues I have with adding more expansions to the game. First of all, I thought part of the point of a "Definitive Edition" was having the COMPLETE game. No more expansion after expansion and having to buy different little chunks of the game bit by bit. Secondly, Whenever they add new civs they have to get creative, obviously, to make them different from the others, and this ends up being very difficult to properly balance. And when they add new mechanics or abilities it ends up creating illogical situations within the context of the other units that came before. For example: Kamayuk have long pikes, which is cool, but then it just feels weird that all other "Pikemen" don't. Same with how Steppe Lancers are the only cavalry to have long lances or how only Konniks are the only ones who can survive their horse getting killed. If they keep making expansions, next they might make a unit that can shoot a bow and switch to a sword when close and then it will feel weird that Samurai can't do it, or things like that. Making a game bit by bit, always trying to add something different, often leads to weird, contradicting and illogical situations, as opposed to when things are planned and designed as a whole from the beginning.

I really don't want to seem ungrateful to the developers. I do appreciate all the work that has been and keeps being put into this awesome game. The original Age of Empires was one of the first videogames I ever played, and I've bought and played every single game and expansion they've made, but I won't be buying Lords of the West. At least not yet. I'm going to wait for the devs to finish whatever they intend to do with the game. I hope it doesn't go down the route of Paradox grand strategy games, where they have dozens of little DLC's, too expensive to buy them all (which is why I don't play those). I'm going to wait, hopefully, for a DEFINITIVE Definitive Edition of Age of Empires 2, sometime in the future, once it has all the added content and patches then I'll buy that.

    Why are slavs not popular?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:22 AM PST

They are at 7th least played civ, while they're seen as a good civ, right?

Are they overshadowed by other civs? Is siege too hard to use? Are they not fun to play?

Why do you think they're not more popular?

12th Architectural Style for Civilization Buildings

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:10 AM PST

Hello everybody, the Definitive Edition for this game is awesome and I love it. Granted, I have mixed feelings about adding more cultures after the ''Last Khans'' but YMMV about that. That said, there is one thing which annoys me and my OCD. Well, the game has 11 different architectural styles for the civilization buildings (check ''Age of Empires 2 Buildings'' at the AOE Wiki). There should be a 12th different and separate architecture style which the developers should have officially included in one of the expansion packs or the Definitive Edition. Good choice is the Mongols due to being semi-nomadic people and seeing them using Japanese-esque buildings is just plain wrong, besides the Far East Asian building style is given to 5 playable cultures while every other style is given to 3 or 4 cultures therefore one of them (preferably the Mongols) should be given something else (read: new and unique) instead.
