Hidden Cup 4 is almost here!

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:29 PM PDT

Hidden Cup 4 is almost here, with the 16 best players in the world competing for a prizepool of over 60,000 dollars. Competitors play on accounts named after Age of Empires 2 Heroes and the bracket is randomly seeded. Players will not know who they are up against and viewers can only guess who they are watching based on the gameplay.

The event is streamed over four days on T90Official's Twitch from March 18th to March 21st. Each day starts at 14 UTC / 10 am EDT.

Day 1 - Four Round of 16 Best of 5 matches

Day 2 - Four Round of 16 Best of 5 matches

Day 3 - All Four Quarterfinal Best of 5 matches

Day 4 - Two Best of 7 Semifinals & LIVE Best of 7 Grand Final

During the tournament, viewers will have an opportunity to attempt to guess player identities. On the final day viewers can submit their final guesses for all 16 players, with prizes for any who gets all 16 correct. The tournament will also feature various videos highlighting player tendencies and quirks. Casting alongside myself at various points throughout the event are TheJamesDash, Nili_AoE, Slam, and Dave_AoE.

I'm hyped! Reminder that the event prizepool starts at $60,000 from Microsoft, and I'm adding an additional $1 for every subscriber on my Twitch channel on the final day. At the time of writing this the prizepool is closing in on $70,000 due to your incredible support, so thank you! As it stands Hidden Cup 4 will have the largest prizepool for a 1v1 event since 2001 (insane).

I will be doing a r/aoe2 AMA tomorrow around Noon Eastern (16 UTC), where I can answer any questions you have about Hidden Cup 4, AoE2, or anything else. Looking forward to answering your questions and hearing your thoughts about HC4. Check out Hidden Cup 4's Mappool if you haven't seen the new maps yet. Also make sure you check out the Hidden Cup 4 Talkshow where Dave and I talked about our expectations at length!

I'm well aware a lot of you rearranged your schedules for this event. I promise it'll live up to the hype! Who do you think will win? Which map is your favorite? Which Hero do you think has the most potential? Give me all your thoughts... and I'll see you Thursday through Sunday!

Do you like the concept of hidden identities in tournaments?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 04:13 AM PDT

First of all a big thanks to Microsoft and T90 to make this tournament happen! I will be watching as much as possible.

I was thinking about the format of hidden identities and I am really not a big fan of this concept.

First the positive thing is, that it introduces a fun guessing game (which is especially great for the caster T90, as it offers a lot of stuff to talk about and opportunities to include memes). BUT in my opinion it nearly completely eliminates the competitive e-sport aspect from the viewers side. Do you know the nailbiting feeling in a series where your favourite player is down two games and then hesweeps the opponent? For me this just can't happen in the Hidden Cups, as I simply just don't care if Hero A or Hero B wins, as i don't know who my favourite player is. Also, if i want to reliably watch the games of my favourite player live, I have no other option than to watch ALL the games, as i don't know when he will be playing (and sadly i don't have enough time for that). Also i can't cheer for my favourite player, because i don't know who he is.

In my opinion the fun guessing minigame doesn't compensate the loss in tension, stress and excitement, which i get when watching my favourite players compete live and cheering for them.

What do you guys think about it?

Farm upgrades are worth ~20 wood per farm.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:35 PM PDT

That is ~20 wood per farm that you build upgraded that the enemy builds un-upgraded. I made this post because other explanations frankly are too hard to turn into a useful heuristic. 20 wood per farm is simple, relatively accurate, and helps decide trade-offs between eco-bonuses.

The following assumes farmers gather at a net rate of 20, 22, then 24f/min respectively. However in general the wood savings is not really affected by the farming rate because it affects both the upgraded and un-upgraded farms. All numbers are approximations obviously.

    1. Horse-collar: For the un-upgraded farm you need to gather wood at a rate of 6.857 for 8.75 min to afford the next farm. For the upgraded farm you need to gather 4.8w/min for 12.5min to afford the next farm. (6.857-4.8)*8.75 = 18 wood saved per farm. Assumes un-upgraded farm gets upgraded upon reseed.
    2. Heavy Plow: For the un-upgraded farm you need to gather wood at a rate of 5.33 for 11.25 min to afford the next farm. For the upgraded farm you need to gather 3.52w/min for 17min to afford the next farm. (5.33-3.52)*11.25 = 20.4 wood saved per farm. Assumes un-upgraded farm gets upgraded upon reseed.
    3. Crop Rotation: For the un-upgraded farm you need to gather wood at a rate of 3.87 for 15.5 min to afford the next farm. For the upgraded farm you need to gather 2.6w/min for 23min to afford the next farm. (3.87-2.6)*15.5 = 19.7 wood saved per farm. Assumes un-upgraded farm gets upgraded upon reseed.
      1. If the enemy does not upgrade their farm upon reseed you get that wood savings again. So for crop rotation, if the enemy doesn't have the tech, you get 19.5 wood saved for each time the enemy reseeds a farm. However that's still only 1.27w/min per farm because of the slow reseed rate.

Also as a rough heuristic heavy plow nets you an extra 1 food per farm per minute. So if you have 24 farms and get it 5min before your opponent that's 120 food.

As a comparison double-bit axe gets you ~3 wood per lumberjack per minute. So every minute earlier you research it is worth exactly that. For 10 lumberjacks that's 30 wood every minute. Put another way: Building 3 farms without horse-collar is equivalent to delaying double-bit axe 2 minutes w/ 10 lumber jacks. Obviously you need to estimate a discount factor (because strictly speaking the lumber benefit is delayed until the enemy farm reseeds), but even if you claim resources halve in value every ~4.5 minutes that implies waiting 30 seconds is equivalent.

Some questions regarding Hidden Cup 4

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:11 AM PDT

    Hi!

While I'm quite hyped about the upcoming tournament, there are some aspects of it that I don't quite understand.

    1. Do the casters know the real identities behind the heroes?
    2. Will all players go on a streaming-break for the duration of the tournament? For example, if TheViper were to stream some ranked games during the tournament, that would obviously imply that he got knocked-out. Did they sign some kind of "contract" that they don't stream and/or use any social media during the tournament?
    3. Do all players promise not to communicate with each other behind the scenes? For example if DauT makes it to the final (praise the Lord), and Viper tells him that he got knocked out somewhere along the way, then DauT can have an educated guess that he is probably against Liereyy (or Hera). Now I understand that most of these players are good friends, and such communication behind the scenes can't be policed anyway, but I'd still like to know if there's any type of "formal" agreement about no communication between them for the duration of the tournament.

...And still not call Slopes by what it looks like, a railway looked at from above. It has two parallel lines, which are the rails, and the treelines on both sides have the shape as if there was two wood ties on the rails.

Goldrush it's clearly a UFO, but that's whatever. The important part is to call Slopes Railway, remember that.

    Siege onager range bugged?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:27 AM PDT

Has anyone ever noticed that siege onagers sometimes have farther range then they should?

I have seen a lot of situations of fully upgraded elite longbowmen vs siege onagers where the game allows them to shoot at the same time, at the same distance from each other, even though the EL has a range of 12 and the siege onager has a range of 8.

    Question about hotkeys.

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:57 AM PDT

I'm pretty new to using hotkeys and I'm trying to get better, I'm not currently using custom hotkeys, but I am using the standard default ones. My current setup for villager build is standard "Q" to enter the build menu and "V" for the next page.

For example if I want to build a palisade in dark age it's "Q" then "S" which is fine, but once I hit fuedal I'm forced to have to use "Q" "V" then "S" The same for all building QVQ barracks QVW Archery range etc.. it's pretty frustrating especially mid game when I'm trying to build structures and have to look down t my keyboard to switch from q to v constantly.

is there any way to change the next page command from "V"? I've been looking everywhere and haven't found anything on it.

What are you most looking forward/not looking forward to at Hidden Cup 4

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:39 AM PDT

What are the highlight's of your experience and also what are you not fond of during HC streams? For me it's the twitch chat and T90 when something exciting happens that I'm looking forward to. But I'm also not looking forward to twitch chat, especially spaming viper confirmed when someone does above average play or "GG" spam everytime someone loses a bit of a considerable amount of pop.

Like wtf is wrong with people? Literally every single game I've won with sicilians recently I get accused of using a cheat civ, or p2w. How can people still be this ignorant? One of the worst winrates, but people still think its OP!?

Latest was from a mongol player literally just after he had been abusing mangudai to dodge ballistics skirms.. Like wtf..

Auto Installer For Age of Empires II On Wine Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Debian)

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:29 PM PDT

    Hello Linux Gamers,

We finally have an auto installer for Age of empires II: The Conquerors, The Kings and 2013 a.k.a HD. Literally install and setup AoE2 off one single command line. I have tested it myself 4 times with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and everything went smoother than butter.

You will find the complete guide with baby steps and picture by picture:

    https://ageofnotes.com/tutorials/auto-installer-for-age-of-empires-ii-on-wine-linux-ubuntu-mint-debian/

Again this guide is only for The conquerors, The kings and Steam HD version since all of them run on 32bit.

I will consider Age of empire II DE in another guide with 64bit wine prefix.

If you have questions keep me posted. Enjoy!
