Some basics questions from a confused beginner

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 01:07 PM PDT

my friends and i just got the game and i played my first skirmish (i was French if that's relevant).

I got crushed by the AI pretty quickly thanks to some severe sensory overload.

so now that i've played the "Try A Game" tutorial and i'm a little less overwhelmed, i've a few beginner questions that the tutorial doesn't address. this is a bit random and wall-o-texty, but i hope my stream of consciousness questions make sense:

    1. what is the value of the loose Food resources on the map? there are dozens of deer/buffalo littered everywhere but within the 2nd berry bush or so you already have access to mills which are renewable sources. so what's their use? also, i see i can make a livestock pen and produce livestock to butcher, but why would i bother micromanaging that process when i can just send villagers to the mill and forget about it? on a related note, why should i invest resources in improving the limited collection of a resource when i have an unlimited option (gathering upgrades for hunting)?
    2. one of the few things i know about AoE is that i should use walls, but in the skirmish we played i spawned right next to a road, which seems to make walling off impossible. enemy units just ran along the road into my town. is there something i'm missing here? or am i just supposed to wall myself with the road outside no matter how close it happens to be?
    3. tradeposts along the roads give me the option to choose a resource/xp. i assume i get the chosen resource every time a coach/train passes. my point of confusion is that an icon for shipment appears where the Home City shipment progress are, except they don't count down or disappear at any point. am i supposed to do anything special to get those shipments or so long as i have a trading post with a resource selected i get it automatically every merchant loop?
    4. the merchants that run the roads are upgradable, if some outposts are owned by me and some by an enemy player does my opponent also benefit from my research? (i assume that these outposts are a source of sustainable income in longer games and are a mini objective, in which case the research is like an investment/gamble that assumes you'll keep control of the majority of posts.)
    5. mills produce infinite food, estates produce infinite coin. lumber seems to be the only resource with no unlimited option on the map - with the exception of a) lumber shipments from Home b) lumber collection from trading posts c) buying wood with coin. am i understanding this right?
    6. what is the explorer for exactly? i walked around with him a bit. earlygame he can kill neutrals and pick up treasure, but the bonuses seem quite measly and not really worth my attention with so many other things to keep an eye on. 90 food becomes irrelevant quick no? other than that he builds outposts which is nice but i'm assuming there's more to it since it's basically a Hero unit.
    7. what's the deal with the Home City? the card system is confusing and unintuitive but i can see WHAT it's doing at least. but why can i select individual buildings in the Home City screen? they don't appear to do anything except zoom the cam on them when clicked, but when you hover over them they say things like "economic units" and "building upgrades" like they have a function. tutorial mentions i can build decks of cards that grows as i play but if that's related in any way it does a shit job of explaining how.

    BONUS QUESTION:

what do you wish you knew when you were starting out? i'm setting this up as a way to get general pointers about things i'm probably oblivious about. minutiae of specific civilizations can be enlightening but i'm still very much at the "wth is going on" stage so anything more civ specific than "don't play X, X are bad for beginners" is probably niche advice (or is it?).

if you made it all the way to here, thanks for your patience!

Mopping up and noticed my skirms acting a bit weird...

Tip: Louisiana Challenge. Build 3 TCs. Just remember to build 2 extra Town Centers, delete one of them and rebuild the 3 rd one. Took me a minute to figure this one out. <3

Weekly rewards and progess are lost with every restart on Linux with Steam

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 03:49 PM PDT

When I start the game I can claim a weekly reward and keep it until I close the game. After the next launch the game forgets that I previously selected a reward and asks me again. The same happens with the current event. I can play 3 missions (the daily max) and if I restart the game I have to start at the first mission again.

Does someone else have the same problem or knows a fix for this?

My OS is Manjaro and I'm using the Steam version with the Proton 5.13.6.
