Posted: 17 Apr 2021 09:06 PM PDT I played this game years and years ago. Bought the game recently and Played a few games va computer but was too scared to play online. Watched some Low Elo Legends games from T90 and got inspired to try it. I finally won!! The other guy spammed cavalry and I spammed halberdier. If he had countered me I would have been dead cause it was the only thing I was producing. By the end game I had like 30% idle resources with no gold or wood scouted but It didn't matter! 50+ halbs with arson + 4 trebs and he called it. I've never been so excited! Jumped up and ran around the room when the victory screen came up. Let's go!!!! [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Apr 2021 01:15 AM PDT Sage of Empires is a web app that gives users sage advice for the civ they are currently playing with / against to use on their 2nd monitor. Features:
Feel free to have a play and see if it is useful. I've currently only added 3 (real) build orders, and even then I've used what I think are correct timings and orders. I'm not an expert (hence why I needed to make this app) so feel free to nicely let me know if something should be changed. E.g. recommended civs for each strat are based on what I could find people saying on the internet and assume playing Arabia. Let me know if some civs should be added/removed from the recommended lists. Also bear in mind this is made for second screens, and at a push tablets, so sorry to say there's no phone support yet. Use the app at https://sage-of-empires.web.app/ Contribute build orders or correct stat mistakes here: https://github.com/Mulliman/sage-of-empires [link] [comments]

My 2 Cents about removing Saracens and getting 2 new civs instead Posted: 18 Apr 2021 05:08 AM PDT Hey everybody, before i'll start presentig my thoughts about the saracens, i will say that there is arguably a ton of historically wrong naming in AoE2 and claims can be made that multiple civs need a name changing to be more historically accurate and to represent the diversity of the medieval ages. First in my mind are for example the teutons or the italians. However this post is about the saracens only and tries to point out a way how to represent the middle east by 2 civs instead of 1. I'm well aware of the problematic of having to many civs without a special character or bloating the civ pool with civs with nonsense bonusses. I tried my best, and even if you would argue against adding those to the game, lets just have some fun! Scroll down if you give a shit about historic accuracy and just want to see the Civ overview. As i am a student of history and arabic-islamic culture it will get very nerdy but maybe kind of informative for some of you. I always was annoyed by the fact that the arabic-islamic civilization is called saracens. Thats not only because its just the word christian chronics used for all of the muslims, it is also preventing more middle eastern civilizations. While there is a variety of christian europan civs there is a lack of the middle eastern ones, although this region was not only a centre of military conflict but also of economic, philosophical, technological, etc. progress in the medieval ages. I'll start by presenting the "big, key players" of the middle east through medieval history:
The first big players would be the Umayyad and their successor the Abbasid califate. They are representing the Islamic califate, which startet with the islamic prophet Mohammed and the four so called "right-guided Kalifs" after him. While in the Umayyad time period the islamic califate stretched from today india to the pyrenees between today spain and france, there was kind of a decline in power after the abbasid took power in a bloody civil war killing almost all of the umayyads. A few could flee and took the power in Al-Andalus, the iberian peninsula founding the "califate of cordoba". The conquest of the islamic califate was stopped by the byzantines at the siege of constantinople and the goths in southern france. Some people might say that it was Karl Martell who stopped them, but actually his victory over some arab marauders 732 (presented in the aoe2 campaigns) was and is highly exaggerated first by the franks and today by white supremacist groups. Sadly it still viewed as THE Battle between Christianity and the Islam in Westfrance by most parts of society, while modern historians agree of it's minor role in stopping an islamic expansion. Actually the turning point in the west was the siege of the gothic ruled town of Toulouse, where a huge arabic-islamic invasion force was defeated by Odo the Great, Duke of Aquitane 721(an acutal enemy of the franks, lol).
Although the abbasid started out strong and were a recognizably power in its earlier days their power declined in 9th and 10th century. On big Power seizing power over first north africa and then palistine and syria were the shiite fatimids. Named after the daugther of the Prophet Mohammed and the wife of the 4th so called "right-guarded" Kalif Ali (who in shiite oppinion should have been the 1st successor after Mohammed, starting the big fight between sunnites and shiites), they proudly represented themselves as shiites fighting the sunnite seljuqs (see below) and the Abbasid Califs. They were religious zealots and their navy was formidible (You see some of this represented in the saracens).
The seljuqs were kind of the archenemy of the Fatimids and ruled over modern Turkey, Iraq, parts of syria and more regions to the east. They were figting the byzantines and conquered Jerusalem from the Fatimids, which led to the crusades being called out. Their army was composed of fast cavalry and cavalry archers outmanoeuvreing the heavy byzantine forces in the battle of manzikert. As you can see in the campaign they are turks and i see their military correctly implemented inside the turk civilization. Therefore i think they are allready nicley represented in the game, as they were in fact turks.
The Ayyubids ruled a short time unter the infamous Saladin. The kurdish Saladin is arguably the most famous islamic ruler (mayber after Mehmet II.), as he is represented in the aoe2 campaigns and in multiple other modern media adaptations (Kingdom of Heaven). He's romanticized as an "arabian knight" not only in the ao2 campaigns but also in those adaptions. His greatest achievement was the Union of the fragmented muslims against the crusaders, winning back Jerusalem after the Batlle at the Horns of Hattin. After his death though the empires crumbled and the mamlukes raised to power.
The Mamluks were soldier slaves rising to power after fall of the ayyubids. Most of the time they had expierienced military leaders as their rulers as all of them (apart from some tries to implement dynasties) were soldiers all their life. Their military expertise let them win against the mongols and drive out the last crusaders from palestine. They also always were interested in commerce and made multiple contracts with europeans, like the kingdom of aragon in the western mediterranean. They had a highly disciplined Army with high morale seeing themselves as the defenders of islam, but they had no real naval power. They were defeated though by the Ottomans 1516/1517 but still played their role in the ottoman military as you can see in the fight against the french invaders in 1798.
While the Ottomans are nicely represented in the turks, the safawids and persian dynasties ruling in medieval iraq and iran are represented by the persians. The different maghrebian dynasties are represented by the berbers. Nothing to discuss here. Conclusion: Possible middle eastern civs: Umayyads Abbasids Fatimids Ayyubids Mamlukes For the Umayyads you can say their rule was ended quite early and could be counted to late time of antiquity, allthough the same could be said about the goths, but i couldn't imagine a civ design for them, so sorry Umayyads. Mayber another day! It can be claimed that the Abbasid, being of persian origion are represented by the persians and i got the same problem as with the Umayyads, lacking a nice civ design. The reign of the Ayyubids is centred around Saladin and their reign represents just a really short period in the History. It wouldn't be 100% correct, but i think its representation by a mamlukes civ would be fine. The left-overs would be the Fatimids and the Mamlukes. The design of the saracens suggests that those empires were the template for the saracens, which makes sense as the Fatimids and the Mamluks are kinda the big players in the prime time of medieval ages in the middle east. In my opinion lets just get rid of the saracens and implement Fatimids and Mamlukes into the game, by making use of the saracen bonus as follows: Fatimids: Naval and Monk civ (Clown Civ ;) ) - Transportship 2x hitpoints, 2x carry capacity and 50% less wood cost - war galley Upgrade costs 50% less, Galley attack 25% faster - Monks return 33% of the gold when killed, free fervor - monastery cost 100 wood Unique Unit: Kutama Tribesman (camel rider with high pierce armor, still strong against knights but not as strong as regular camels Unique Techs: Castle Age: Plundering: Ships generate gold when destroying buildings or killing economy units Imperial Age: Zealotry: Kutama Tribesman can be produced out of monasteries Team Bonus: Docks produce 5% faster Mamlukes: Camel and Trade Civilization - Camels +10 Hitpoints - Martket costs - 100 wood - Market trade cost only 5% - Camels gain +1/+1 melee armour in castle/imperial age Unique Unit Mounted Mamluk (just the saracen mamluke) Unique Tech: Castle Age: Enemy of the Crusaders: siege units +35% against Fortifications (they won't get siege engineers obviously) Imperial Age: Mamluke Discipline: Camels + 20 Hitpoints Team Bonus: Archers +2 Attack vs. Buildings The ressources costs of the Unique Techs and Units is quite hard to do and would need some testing so i just didn't give any proposals. Obviously the tech tree is missing, too, but would be build around specific civ bonusses (fatimids Good Navy, Monks and cav upgrades and the mamlukes Good camels, Siege and archers) As i said i am well aware that those civs/empires are allready presented by the saracens, but i am just a big fan of variety and hey man the sicilians and the burgundians are kinda the litte brother and sister of the franks and the british to be honest ;). In Addition the Fatimids and the Mamlukes were extremly different in many regards. I hope you enjoyed to read all that stuff and congratulations you made it to the end. Sorry for my bad english, it's not my first language and possibly not even my second (Bonjour a tous!). If you need further explanation i'm here for you! Peace and Love <3 [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Apr 2021 06:26 AM PDT I hit 1400 elo for the first time some weeks ago. Then I took a break for some days. Played again, dropped to 1300. Took another little break. Got stomped by 1200 elo players. Every game got more frustrating. But I remember times when this game was actually fun and when I experienced close matches and even won some. So I try again and again. It gets worse every time. I decide to never play again. Then I watch pro games on Youtube and remember what a funny game this is. So I try again and get completely humiliated by 1100 elo players. Every time I start AoE2, my day is ruined when I exit it. The game I once loved turned against me. Today I finally did the right thing and uninstalled it. I hope I'm strong enough to never come back. But I still don't understand how this happened. Am I the only one? [link] [comments]

Survey for Master's dissertation about video game brands Posted: 18 Apr 2021 07:14 AM PDT Hello everyone! I'm a Master's student from Portugal working on my dissertation which is about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on video game brands and how that impact differs from single-player to multi-player video games. As such, I've created a survey to gather data which needs answers from people who played video games in the last year. I know surveys are no fun but it would really be extremely helpful for me to finish my dissertation and I would appreciate it a lot if you could answer it, and if you'd like to I would also appreciate it a lot if you could share it with other any gamers you know. Your opinion is extremely valuable to the study! The survey is fully anonymous and won't take more than 10mins of your time. If you have any questions or feedback feel free to let me know. Thank you very much! Link of the survey: https://ucplbusiness.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dbqf4ORc7sdkklM [link] [comments]

Added Armor class names after 30 and updated those before 30! Posted: 18 Apr 2021 01:05 AM PDT You can download the file here Genie Editor Configuration file. I have created it keeping in mind the tool available at AoK heavens, but it should work for the tool available in game files too. Please note that this is a supplementary file and not a standalone file. In case I have missed some values, please let me know in the comments. Aimed for modders, but useful for anybody who likes to check what the numbers stand for, [link] [comments]
Do Hand Cannoneers outclass Bowmen Posted: 18 Apr 2021 03:07 AM PDT Simple question. It's all in the title. Hand Cannoneers have terrible performance against cavalry and skirm. They're made to be good against inf, but are they decent at this job? Is a hand cannoneer stronger than an archer? thank you. [link] [comments] |
