People wanting to be the next "legend of the liar" are really starting to get on my nerves

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 09:10 PM PDT

Has anybody else run into this a lot recently? It might just be bad luck but I'm getting sick of people pretending to resign or pretending they meant to go random or otherwise don't know how to play their civ because they accidentally picked the wrong one. It doesn't work, I play the game out as normal and I don't stop attacking until one of us loses or resigns, but I'm annoyed because I think it's bad for the community as a whole. People are taking advantage of the fact that this game has a very accommodating playerbase, and I'm worried that if this type of thing proliferates around that's going to change. How can we shut down the spread of this? Do we just ignore them collectively until they stop? Should I just report them as griefers? It seems a little extreme to try to get someone banned over saying "gg" and then not resigning to try to trick their opponent into relaxing. Then again, it would be a huge loss for a nicer (if gullible) player to quit over it, though I still won't be hitting the report button yet unless I start seeing it in basically every game. Any thoughts? Is it all fair in love and war?

I started playing Friday after not playing for probably 20 years and jumped right into Ranked. Very happy with how it's going!

A way to fix the banning system for team games

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 03:03 AM PDT

So right now we obviously only get 1 ban so that it doesn't fuck over matchmaking and keeps it faster then otherwise. This makes sense it's much better then giving everyone like 3 bans or something. But still feels bad to players.

My solution is simply just a ranking system. Everyone gets like 3-4 bans each and you have to rank them in order 1st would be the same currently and you would never play on it. 2nd and so on would also count as a ban long as there is a map left open.

So basically if there is no map left open with 4 bans from each player then the system removes everyone's 4th ban. If there is still no map left open it removes everyone's 3rd ban, and so on. This would probably feel much better even if it didn't guarantee the bans.

    Civ Quiz

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I have the hardest time picking new civs to focus on, but I've always felt the Spirit of the Law quiz is lacking. It only has a few civs as possible results, which I've always found a little disappointing. I also have always felt that the questions could be a little more thorough. Are there any other quizzes out there/tools (maybe a flow chart?) for picking civs?

(This is in no way me throwing shade on Spirit of the Law, I love his content overall.)

Stop using that broken TG elo as starting elo for 1v1

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 11:35 AM PDT

Context: If you have TG but not 1v1 rating, you will start you 1v1 placement match with your team elo.

I have matched with people at 16+ TG rating at 1v1 ladder for their placement games. Those were jokes for both sides needless to say. It's not that bad from my side, who just suffer some meaningless 20mins games. For the TG players, it takes tones of games to for them to tank to their true 1v1 elo, which isn't fun at all.

Could we just let everyone start 1v1 at 1000 without referencing to team elo? Everyone knows how broken that team elo is.

On a side note, please freaking fix the TG rating system. It ruins the whole match making and makes ranked TG super frustrating to play. I've stopped playing ranked TG because of that for a long time.

Please help, why didn't I win with my wonder?

Please help, why didn't I win with my wonder?

I got my wonder up when it looked like he was too hard to push in, and would win the eco game. Does it really take longer than 40min. for a wonder win? I couldn't find any indicator in-game. Is it a bug, or something I don't know of yet? I'm still very new to the game.

Played a game with each civ

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 07:03 PM PDT

I figured it was time to get a win with each vs AI try some builds and play with each civ. Sometimes I had to play the AI a few times to get a win. My fav civs going into it were Vikings (cause I'm a viking) and the mezo civs (cause my wife is mezo, my kids are mezo Vikings). I started playing 1v1 hard on Black Forest because I wanted a chance to boom and get unique units / techs. That got old pretty quick and I went nomad for a bit then for the last 3 rows I just did Arabia. Hard was pressuring me too much to boom (I'm not very good) so I switched to moderate AI and did a 1v3...yea 3 moderates are easier than 1 hard for me. Anyways here are a couple thoughts after playing them all...

The strongest I felt where I snowballed the hardest was with Ethiopians I mopped the floor with them so easy they are now my favorite civ. I love archers and they are the most fun to play with; their architecture is awesome, I love that civ.

The strongest masses unique unit was probably the elephant scorpions I forget which civ had that but I massed those and just wrecked everything in sight, buildings...castles...armies...the elephants were impervious to all it was awesome.

The most fun was massing those units that's cost half a pop I forget what they are but they are melee and cheap. I felt like I had a million Zerglings and I just rallied my castles in enemy base.

There wasn't any civs I didn't like, for some reason I had a hard time with Slavs and I had to build like 10 of each production building and just spam trash. That is probably more of me sucking and not the civ.

If you haven't done this I would highly recommend. One of the biggest things I struggled with was getting bad maps. You have to wall up vs 3 at my level and sometimes there was just nothing to wall for miles but that's Arabia for you. I would say 2 maps out of the dozens I played were flawless and perfect. Wood was an issue but that's just an Arabia thing as well.

I got to get a lot of practice in dark and defending in feudal.

Overall I would highly recommend I think I will do this again once I'm better in different settings and when the new expansion comes out. But I am so glad I found Ethiopians I'm definitely going to be mainly using those bad boys a lot moving forward.

Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts.

Japanese Underrated Civ At Low-Mid ELO?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 10:43 PM PDT

Japanese were a civ I use to play all the time as a kid playing against my dad in 1v1 DM, he would always pick Vikings and go heavy Berserks, and I would counter pick Japanese since the Samurai mop up Berserks and their water is pretty decent as well.

On paper Japanese don't look very compelling. Almost all their bonuses are either terrible or only good for water maps.

They have a pretty average tech tree, missing Hussar, Paladin, BBC, Siege Ram, and Siege Onager.

But their one redeeming quality: 33% faster attacking infantry, and much faster firing/packing trebs. Considering how many people pick cavalry civs at lower ELO this bonus is insane. Probably 70% of my games so far have been against cav civs, with Franks being by far the most popular but Bulgarians, Lithuanians, Mongols, and Huns definitely being up there.

I believe Japanese militia line beats any other militia line in the game with equal numbers, and their spear line definitely does.

Their spearman line absolutely MELTS light cav, and wins fights against cavalier with equal numbers. I've found a ball of Japanese halbs protecting their super trebs is impossible to push for cav civs. Usually a handful of cavalier/paladin can dive in and kill a treb or 2 before getting killed, but not against Japanese Halbs.

Since starting to main Japanese I've won 70% of my games and jumped from 1000 ELO to hitting 1100 for the first time.

Japanese seem to have an answer for everything, best halbs for fighting cav civs, best champions for fighting meso civs or other infantry civs, have fully upgraded arbelests and better trebs for fighting campy archer civs like Britons. Their Samurai MELTS other unique units like Goth Huskarls or Berserkers.

They even have fully upgraded cav archers, so if the enemy goes for lots of onagers you can switch into those, or just use them to raid.

I'd say probably their worst matchup is an archer civ with a better eco that can pressure in Castle age and an open tech tree, like the Chinese. Something like light cav + xbow + onager I think would work great.

You just can't let the Japanese get a forward castle down, you can't win a treb war against them and you can't snipe their trebs with cavalier.

I'm honestly not sure how you can fight a Japanese player who has a forward castle covering one of your golds, with trebs+arbs+halbs. Maybe Celt siege rams with Champions inside would work, but normal siege rams just get melted by Jap halbs and anything you might put inside will get destroyed by Arbs.

Knights & Skirms vs. Xbow & Pikes

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 04:26 AM PDT

I feel that the two army compositions in the title are the most common in 1v1 for castle age Fights. Which would you prefer and why? What is there to look out for with either comp? (i know, it always depends, but surely you will have some feelings leaning towards or against one or the other or some general thoughts) Thank you for your insights.

    Finally beat the moderate AI

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 06:55 PM PDT

Ok. Maybe not "finally." 3 games of trying as an absolute beginner on moderate in AoE2. But at first I had no clue how to beat the AI, turns out, getting a lot of villagers is kinda important. But I am not sure if I can be consistent about beating moderate yet.

Any advice on good habits as a beginner in AoE2? I noticed that I never get my boars and I know that's a bad habit.
