Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 13: Magyars vs Vietnamese

Two civs that somehow manage to be both popular and unpopular at the same time LUL

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Sicilians vs Slavs, and next up is the Magyars vs Vietnamese!

    Magyars: Cavalry civilization

    • Villagers kill predators in 1 strike
    • Forging, Iron Casting, and Blast Furnace free
    • Scout-line costs -15%
    • TEAM BONUS: Foot archers +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Magyar Huszar (Powerful hussar with bonus damage vs siege)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Corvinian Army (Magyar Huszars cost no gold)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Recurve Bow (Cavalry Archers +1 attack, +1 range)

    Vietnamese: Archer civilization

    • Enemy TC location revealed at the start of the game
    • Economic upgrades do not cost wood
    • Archery Range units +20% hp
    • Conscription free
    • TEAM BONUS: Imperial Skirmisher upgrade available at Archery Range
    • Unique Unit: Rattan Archer (Powerful foot archer with high pierce armor)
    • Unique Unit: Imperial Skirmisher (Imperial Age skirmisher upgrade... idk it's pretty self-explanatory kappa)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chatras (Battle Elephants gain +50 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Paper Money (A tech so bad that it makes Scutage look good)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Interesting one here imo! For 1v1 Arabia and other open maps, both of these civs fall under the category of "pretty good but not quite top-tier", but for different reasons. Magyars have an excellent aggressive opening with their scouts/m@a, as well as possess a wide array of powerful mounted units. However, they lack an eco bonus. Vietnamese, meanwhile, have a strong eco bonus, solid military bonus, and boast a decent tech tree. However, their best units tend to be on the slow side, and they may struggle vs civs that don't utilize much pierce damage. Thoughts?
    • On closed maps, Vietnamese tend to be considered a bit stronger on paper. Their solid eco bonus and late game army comp serve them quite well in many situations on maps like Arena, Hideout, and RF. However, If given the time, Magyars can field one of the scariest, most cost-efficient late game armies out there for 1v1s. What do you guys think? Can Magyars get to their scariest army? And even then can it defeat the barrage of Vietnamese arrows?
    • Something that can apply to most land map 1v1s - trash wars! Both of these civs strike me as possessing some of the best trash units in the game. Vietnamese have Imperial Skirmishers, Guilds, halbs, and decent light cav. However, Magyars have their namesake Huszars, FU skirms, but honestly mediocre halbs that miss Squires and Plate Mail. Which civ do you favor past the 1 hour mark?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Celts vs Saracens. Hope to see you there! :)

who plays 3v3 with random teammates, goes pocket, FC - boom, leaves his partners to be destroyed 2 vs 3 and then refuses to resign when his partners do because he's just started to create his army and wants to play with it before the end.

This is just annoying for everyone. For your teammates who are basically playing a 2 vs 3, and for your opponents who might have something better to do once the game is won than to break your fortified wall and 3 castle-defense

2 Pools Hype/Hope for New Civ Meta

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:42 PM PDT

wow, shout out to Lidakor! This tournament format is so unique and fun, and leads to such interesting high level games. I loved HC, but a lot of the map meta felt very similar series to series. I'm still catching up on the games from this weekend, but each game feels so different, and I'm seeing unit matchups I've never seen before. I'm also really hoping that some of the pros have planned out new potential BOs for Burgundians and Sicilians in the "bad" civ pool. I feel like no one has figured them out, and being forced to use them in a team game setting with a better civ to back up could produce actual good strategies. I think what makes two pools so unique is the potential for new metas with interesting civ combos/matchups. Anyway, I'm excited and I definitely recommend checking out Lidakor's YouTube and twitch to watch the games, it's really high quality AOE2

AOE 2 through the eyes of a non-gamer

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 08:32 AM PDT

*Disclaimer: N00b poster. Not sure how else to post a word document, so I decided to copy/paste instead.

My spouse created a word document while overhearing an AOE 2 gaming session between my brother and I back in 2016. Thought this community would appreciate this humor and can relate to it. I kept everything unedited except altering the identities of the gamers. Sorry for taking almost 5 years to post it. Enjoy!

Random Phrases I Hear Auburntigerz Say When He is Gaming With His Brother:

Are you carrying a relic through my vase?

Dude, they're trying to get wood!

Why is there a monk carrying my vase?

    Alright, yellow's about to die!

I'm just trying to destroy everything!

Just give it up! Thank you! Thank you! I was wondering when they were going to finish up!

Do we have time to go back to our monks?

Why am I missing so much good stuff?

    What's wrong?! What's wrong?!

I just want to tick them off!

    Oh, oops, I accidentally unloaded.

    And here they come!

I'm fearing the rathof….!!! (silence) Ahhh, this is crazy!

    Do it!

Wow, green is really pushing up.

I need to thin my population.

They had three guys of their own guys kill my one guy and they're coming after my guys.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT attack my peasants.

    Bottleneck time!

    Ouch, that really hurt.

    You have gottabe…...ohhhh……ooooooo…..I'm really pissed!

They managed to break through and destroy my duck!...again!

Oh my gosh, I love the sound of farms being exhausted.

Let's see if we can finish this……let's see if we can finish this.

    Ohhhhhhhhyeaaaahhhhhh!

    Yeah, I don't care….I'm at 60,000 food...sooo I'm pretty good.

And yet, you are still alive….why?

    My gosh, come on…die already!

    Sacrifices must be made!

    Summary & Analysis:

Auburntigerz and his brother live in a vicious and vindictive world where guys kill guys by coming after guys, discrimination based on color is prevalent ("yellows" seem to be especially depreciated), ducks are held in high regard, and there is a strange intimate connection with monks. It is also apparent that Auburntigerz has a slight obsession with his vase, and you DO NOT want to mess with his peasants or he will be pissed and will Bottleneck you until your farms are exhausted! But never fear, there is a plethora of food, averaging at 60,000 foods, so although Auburntigerz vows to destroy everything, these men live in a thriving and fruitful society!

The Reality of 'Smurfing' in AOE2DE - Recent Poll Analysis

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:34 AM PDT

Hey, Spirit of the Odysseus here - Some feedback on the recent polls I've been conducting:

First Poll - Numbers of Multiple Account Holders

Out of a sample of 315 redditors:

    • 17% had created at least one additional account.
    • 20% of all accounts in the sample were additional accounts held by a pre-existing player (allowing a conservative estimate for the 'more than three' category)

    Conclusions:

The majority of players appear not to create multiple accounts. I thought more might do it - I wonder if this is because it provokes a out-of-proportion bitter memory when you get destroyed by a smurf with no game history? Smurfing is apparently not as widespread as many might think.

The total player base is also not as numerous as you might think - about 80% of the current total.

Second Poll - Multiple Account Holder Motivation

Out of a sample of 81 multiple account holders:

    • 7% stated they liked winning against easy opponents.
    • 5% stated they had been banned/were unhappy with their account's bad reputation.
    • 62% stated they liked having a 'try hard' and a 'chill/experimental account'. I suspect that many of those who selected 'other' could also be added to this category based on their comments.
    • Some of the more popular 'other' reasons explained in comments included hiding tactics for tournament play, their main account being bugged and wanting to be able to play fun team games with lower elo friends. A desire for lower queue times did not feature as a reason.

    Conclusions:

As part of the 'one account majority' I had taken a pretty dim view of multiple account creators. However, it seems they are not the villains I first thought! Only a small minority cited their primary motivation as 'noob stomping' for the purposes of ego massage. The majority appear to like having a special account for 'try harding'. I also find it encouraging that a small minority reported being banned/getting a bad rep. At least reporting does something!

    Final thoughts:

Thanks to everyone who participated in these polls! I found it fun getting to know a bit more about the de landscape. Peace out.

How to defend against mass knights as an archer civ

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:03 AM PDT

    Hi all,

    Me: britons Enemy: Lithu, Magyars

Just play 2 games where both times I had 3 MaA and 5 archers in feudal and for up to castle age before opponent. Once I had about 10 crossbows I moved out but the the enemy has Hella knights that tank my Arrows and break through the palisade. I house walled everything bar the gate.

My question: as an archer civ playing against cav civ should I wait for around 10 pikes before moving out? I'm not sure exactly what to do here. Any help is appreciated.

    I'm at elo 1150

    Thanks

    A question regarding AoE soundtrack

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:52 AM PDT

Why are those songs titled so weirdly? I mean, what was the naming process, how does the composition relate to those songs' silly names?

I love it all and that's a mystery to me. Seriously tho, does anybody know?
