Strategy Thesis of the Week: Longswords in early Castle Age are Meta Posted: 26 Jun 2021 06:56 AM PDT Okay, guys, don't freak out and give me a minute to explain myself. I know very well that Long Swordsmen are a unit which is absolutely crap. I advocated to buff them multiple times. Their stats are a joke. They actually have a base melee armor of 0. That is worse than a villager. Those guys have a shield and an armor and seemingly that's worse than a casual dress as long as the dress comes from a loom. Whatsoever, I really enjoy to play with Infantry, perhaps because I am slow af. And I tried again and again to make Longswords happen. Obviously, I tend to fail with it. But I think I finally figured out when and how to use them and I am actually positive that they might be superior to a Knights-opening in early Castle Age in very specific situations. Just recently I beat Memb with a Pikemen-Longswords-play that you can still check on his Twitch (starting at 00:17). (Worth mentioning that I lost against Memb multiple times before, just had a civ-win with Indians vs Magyars so far. It feels like the old man is one of the the smartest guys on that Elo-level, he is playing the Civs and the Maps (!) so, so well. His macro can be off at times but he compensates for it with decision making big time.) It was hilarious to see the chat afterwards with everyone being confused about what I was doing. And also the discussions afterwards how that shouldn't have worked. It did work though, players don't play perfectly. What I did there is not the best application though, I think. Let me elaborate.
While Knights and Xbows are way better units than Longswords overall, the slow, weak, expensive Sword-swingers have at least a few positives going for them:
In fact, in most cases where you play Scouts or M@A into nothing into Castle Age, the opponent predicts Knights. He might prepare some Spears for it aaaand this will be not good for him when suddenly 15 Longswords pop up at his base before he got any Castle Age technologies in. Optimally, you will come in with the Longswords (or the M@A who are going to become Longswords very soon) right before you hit Castle Age or perhaps shortly after, when the Longsword upgrade finishs. That is where the opponent doesn't expect any aggression from you if you have not shown any signs of an archer play beforehand. And it's also where the opponent might move out, expand walls, add production buildings or a TC. The downside is, obviously....you die to Knights and Xbows. So...you die every time. Key is to make enough damage before your Longswords die to pay off for them. With ~10 Longswords you actually kill buildings pretty quickly, so you have a good chance to take out production buildings before the opponent starts to make the good units. This will delay his production, it will heavily delay his boom and most probably it will disturb his eco balance a lot. It works actually very similar to the M@A-play which also gives you just a small time window to do damage before the opponent makes army, but if you get the damage in, it's absolutely worth it. The difference to M@A is that:
That means, that you can play Longswords only
Good thing is that you should know by mid-early Feudal if your opponent produces Archers or not. If not, you can start to prepare the Longswords with 1-2 additional Barracks and the necessary economy. So, this is how you pull it off:
Civs that can use Longswords are mostly:
Possibly also these:
So can that be Meta - in very specific situations - or not? Some critical thinking: All of that is quite the big investment for a unit and tech which you don't want to produce long-term and it's kinda risky bc you might not be able to make the damage you need. Also, you can basically only do it if you're slightly ahead. Isn't it especially in these situation very good to just stick to the Xbow/Knight Meta? Well, probably on a theoretical level, that might be a yes, at least in many situations. There are some interesting aspects here, though:
With all those factors, it feels for me that there must be situations where the Longsword-play is even optimal on theoretical Meta-level of the game - but that is only speculation of course. Fact is that it can work on lower levels, even against opponent who are on the same level as you. And as most of us are not competing in Hidden Cup anyway, that is a nice little variation, right? Posted: 26 Jun 2021 05:23 AM PDT I realised I had a folder of AOE2 resources bookmarked over the years that I thought might help others in the community, so sharing below in list format, let me know if there is anything to add for others benefit. BUILD ORDERS These resources will help provide info on the order of buildings and unit production. STATISTICS See personal stats, but also leaderboards and civ statistics. VIDEO CONTENT There is plenty of informative build orders, high level play, and AoE related entertainment.
STREAMING So many great streamers, I've listed my favourites below, but you can see all streamers on Twitch. COMMUNITY Some online communities with plenty of questions, tips and banter.
APPS Some supporting applications.
BUGS ONLINE MATCHMAKING Of course you can buy and play the game on Steam which is what most people do these days, however before the days of AOE2 on Steam (and post MSZone) people used to play on Voobly - and many still do. If you want to play on Voobly, but have the games on steam you may want to take a look at AoE2 Tools. [link] [comments]

Initial opinion on DE expansions vs now Posted: 25 Jun 2021 09:28 PM PDT When Lords of the West was announced I was sympathetic to people who saw additional civs as unnecessary. I was not immediately captivated by the two new civs but my opinion has changed a lot. Sicilians may be my favorite civ right now. At first they felt awkward but they are surprisingly flexible civ and it's fun to actually use infantry in your castle age army comp. Burgundians may need some adjustments with their UT and I cant say I play as them as much but know many people still enjoy them. These new civs can always be balanced after being introduced. I'm glad developers continue to expand DE and look forward to continued expansions. Has your opinion shifted? [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:53 AM PDT Hello guys. I'm still looking for a deeper understanding of counters. I only know champions beat Eagles and Huskarls. But could you tell me, for each unit of this list, who wins and who gets defeated? Making all possible 1v1 combination. (Infantry only) -Berserker -Samurai -Jaguar warrior -Huskarl -Woad Raider -Champion -Condottiero -Teutonic knight -Kamayuk -Eagle -Throwing axeman Thanks in advance [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Jun 2021 02:47 AM PDT I invested quite some effort in underplayed/underpowered civs at my 1k3-4 elo (400 cuman games... :D). Saw Daut playing the Sicilians some days ago and gave it a try (https://aoe2.net/#profile-1810826). The sicilian scout rush is quite pleasant, yet they do suffer from no particular early eco bonus. But damn. They are such a cockroach civ and fun civ! The hard part is to get booming while you suffer from pressure and early castle light cav / knights can help with that. They can even compete with average archer rushes. In late game! The sergeant is awesome, the 35 elite ones you get from first crusade usually crush both the ennemy archer army + the castle going strong behind it... and you then march forward building donjons with your army in his eco 11... but that's quite not the funniest part IMO : the farming eco is quite unraidable with post-imp donjons around fully-upgraded dealing 5+4(archer blacksmith+chemistry)+3(arrowlist)=12 with 3 arrows a volley of those (a FU hussar takes in 16 damage a volley)! In late trash wars you can get 200 pop and bank some nice gold back with scutage like 1.5k and your farms never run out which is great. I think the most fun I get is when the opponent tries to build some castle on a side resource and my 3 vils with treadmill crane deny it with a fast-built donjon near. They are really underplayed and enjoyable. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Jun 2021 06:16 AM PDT So someone asked me to make the Ming Dynasty as a civ if the Chinese were to be split, and I thought it might be fun to do a few of these so people can discuss/debate over what their tech tree, bonuses, etc should be. Here's what I've started them off at.
The Ming fell apart in later years due to famine and rebellion, hence being more of a mid game civ. They opened extensive trade networks with westerners and the middle east, importing the much improved firearms to arm their soldiers over the old firelances. Religion was mildly persecuted under their rule, although it did persist regardless. They were far more defencively minded and focused than the preceding dynasty, and built large sections of the great wall. They initially had a large navy and one of the largest docks in the world, but it fell into ruin towards the end of their era. In general, the Ming did not advance the sciences and were outpaced by most others as opposed to the glory of the Song dynasty. This is reflected in lacking many Imperial upgrades. They initially had a strong cavalry force, however were betrayed and fought a major war against their Mongolian subjects. The Ming, as I envision them, have a very broad playstyle - able to counter most other civs in the feudal age but falling behind in the Imperial and being completely outmatched in Late Imperial. They will gain a boost to their economy in the feudal age and can get there much easier than other civs. They are able to defend against early archer attacks better thanks to their bonus villager armour and with careful planning can quickly scout ahead of their opponents. In an ideal world where we could give them whatever we wanted, this is what I'd personally give them
What are your thoughts? How would you change this baseline to better fit the Ming? Other ideas for UU and UTs or bonuses? [link] [comments]
Is the Art of the War Fast Castle build order in AoE 2 DE wrong ? Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:57 AM PDT I've been trying my hands at the AotW missions and (after who knows how many tries) I finally scored the gold on this one. Then, out of curiosity, I checked out TheViper's video to see how he faired at it. Throughout the mission he kept saying that's not how he'd do it and this so wrong. After feeling slightly encouraged and thinking I've got my very first build order down, and then immediately getting discouraged to try it out, here are my questions:

What is it about AOEii that makes it so hard to master? Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:20 PM PDT I have a few theories. One, the skill it takes to have a high APM. Two, decision making ability (macro related - to the smoothness/no idle time) of the game. Three, ability to specialize in all of the civilizations in any situation. Can you think of any other major factors? [link] [comments] |
