    Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 8: Burmese vs Khmer

    Battle of the Southeast Asian elephant-based powerhouses!

    Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Aztecs vs Goths, and next up is the Burmese vs Khmer!

    Burmese: Monk and Elephant civilization

    • Lumber Camp upgrades free
    • Infantry +1/2/3 attack in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Monastery techs cost -50%
    • TEAM BONUS: Relic spawns visible on map
    • Unique Unit: Arambai (Powerful dart-throwing ranged cavalry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Howdah (Battle Elephants +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Manipur Cavalry (Cav and Arambai +6 damage vs buildings)

    Khmer: Siege and Elephant civilization

    • No buildings required to Age up or to unlock other buildings
    • Farmers do not drop off food at TCs or Mills - food is instantly added to stockpile as the farmer gathers
    • Battle Elephants move +10% faster
    • Villagers can garrison inside houses (max 5 per house)
    • TEAM BONUS: Scorpions +1 range
    • Unique Unit: Ballista Elephant (A scorpion on an elephant)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Tusk Swords (Battle Elephants +3 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Double Crossbow (Scorps and Ballista Eles fire an additional bolt)

    Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so for 1v1 Arabia, Khmer are very much the more straightforward civ if you want to play "meta". They have 2 strong economy bonuses, and a broad enough tech tree. That said, in everything except archers and siege, Burmese will outperform Khmer militarily - furthermore boosted by a strong early game with the extra attack M@A and free LC upgrades. How do you see this one playing out?
    • On closed maps, things get quite interesting between these two. Again, Khmer can play "meta" much more smoothly with a strong boom, arbs, halbs, and siege. However, Burmese can more easily play with their deadly arambai, and can further make great use of their bombard cannon advantage over Khmer when it comes to sniping the latter's siege units. Which civ do you prefer on maps like Arena, BF, and Hideout?
    • Since tgs seem pretty straightforward and Khmer-favored, let's mix things up! On Nomad maps, Khmer can make excellent use of their not-needing-buildings-to-Age-up bonus, and again have a fairly broad tech tree and good economy. Of course, Burmese are a pretty common pick on Nomad itself due to the strength of their Castle drop, wood bonus, and strong Monks. Is there a good opportunity for Khmer to keep expanding and falling back until they can amass a superior army, or will they get overrun by arambai, monks, and ships?

    Do you play an instrument and if yes, how is your APM?

    I've been really curious about this for a while. Left hand coordination seems to be really great for some musicians. Is this a skill that translates? I can't tell, because I am neither musical nor a fast player. Or is playing speed more about multitasking ability in your head?

    I don't know why, but I need to know.

    Follow up question, do you think a good sense of rhythm helps with complex micro with mangonels xbows and such?

    Which free techs require the building they come from?

    If a civ gets a tech for free (Conscription, Chemistry, Lumber Camp Upgrades, etc.), do some of these require the building they would normally come from? Castle, university, lumber camp, etc.

    A month or two ago, I posted that I hit 1500 for the first time. After that, I immediately cratered to 1300. Getting back to 1500 and proving that it wasn't a fluke feels even sweeter :)

    Got Called a Noob for making Turk HCA

    I remembered playing with another friend in Cenotes. I was Turks, and my rival was Portuguese.

    I trained more Cav archers and hussars, than janissaries. When my rival saw my army comp, I was called a noob for making HCA and cavalry units 11.

    Is focusing more on HCA and cavalry as Turks noobish? I mean, Turkish Cav Archers has 20 more HP and more accurate than Janissaries, and hussars has one extra armor.

    AI kiting is ridiculous and makes any scenario involving AI archers or Galleys a practical joke

    Title pretty much. I've been running through campaigns and I'll be the first to admit I'm an awful player and probably shouldn't have half the gold medals I have but does anyone else feel the AI kiting behavior needs to be toned down a couple hundred notches. This shit is so ridiculous it almost feels like a practical joke where the AI has the capability to bait any unit regardless of HP into a never ending death march across the map following a single archer. I understand that CA and HCA are made for this, kiting with them is easy and repeatable by humans. But the AI's 3 quadrillion APM skills turn any ranged unit into a kiting force of destruction. It's honestly worse for me than the AI blatantly cheating by giving itself resources, because that's just a substitute for your average economy, whereas kiting is usually done with groups of units rather than 30 different units that all move simultaneously. Anyway that's my rant, I'm just kind of fed up with this fuckery because the AI was supposed to be done blatantly cheating after CD but it's kinda come back with a vengeance with this kiting.

    2 achievements bug after last patch

    I'm currently trying to complete all achievements in the game: currently i have found in the last few days that 2 of them cant be unlocked: - No Suntzu Light: Shoot 100000 with Chukonu - Anyone order a Pizza?: train 1000 condottieri as a non italian civ

    I've tried everything in random map: at last with inf resources, post-imp map on arena training a ton of both ckn and condottieri but nothing.

    For the second one I found a discussion on the aoe2 forum which states that, after the last patch it is definitely broken since devs changed the way achievements works to expand them for both Steam and Xbox players.

    For the first one nothing so far :(

    I dunno if anyone else has experienced this problem these days.
