Long time AoE2 player - Just started AoE3

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT

So, I've been playing AoE2 for 20ish years at an intermediate level, but for some reason never picked up AoE3. I think I may have played it a few times when it came out in 2005, but it never 'hooked' me like AoE2 did. At the time I think a few things threw me off:

    • Home cities / cards, particularly the grinding XP aspect
    • The move to 3D graphics felt clunky
    • The units and counters weren't as obvious as AoE2
    • I didn't like the new systems like trade posts and no drop off buildings
    • Maybe I was just too young and it was too complex

Anyway, prelude over. I just started playing AoE3 DE a couple of days ago to compare AoE2, AoE3 and the AoE4 beta.

And wow - the game is amazing and I can't believe I haven't given it a second chance until now! Maybe it's the DE coat of paint but it looks and feels incredible. Every unit has weight, the sound effects are fantastic and immerse you in the battles, and the home city system adds a whole new layer of strategy.

It's a bit intimidating coming from AoE2 where I know every unit, stat and counter pretty much back to front, to a new game where I know nothing, but at the same time I'm excited to learn about all of the units, civs and strategies. Like any RTS I'm sure there's a pretty steep learning curve.

I had my first multiplayer games today, a noob 2v2 where I got stomped, and another 2v2 where we won and I came out on top with the scores. It felt good to get that first W on the board haha.

I don't think I'll ever get to be as competitive a level as I am with AoE2, but I know I'm gonna have a lot of fun with AoE3!

P.S. - If anyone wants to show me the ropes online to help me get the basics down, hit me up! Or if you have any good resources (Youtubers, Wikis) that can help me on my way that would be great too - thanks guys!

    Portuguese on water?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 08:40 PM PDT

Hello aoe3 fam I've played age of empires 3 for forever! I've just self-taught myself how to play but also watched some videos and on Reddit too. Everyone talks about the Portuguese being super water based. Is there a reason / strategy for this? I saw Timinator in a samurai tournament totally dominate the fishing game on the water with Ports and everyone said that's their go to. I'm not a bad player (I can sometimes handle expert AI depending on my fellow AI teammates 😅) but I don't know the intricacies of each civ. Are there any good references for further gameplay analysis of each Civ?

    Thank you!

The Hausa rush is still unstoppable

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 06:16 AM PDT

Desert warriors hit at 6.00 followed with Desert Raiders and Raiders at 6.30 or so, followed in quick succession by sudanese dervish popping from a forward watch tower.

I've just had a hausa player tell me in post match that he's stopped playing japanese because this rush is unstoppable for all civs except dutch, ports, brits.

I'm playing french and there is no discernible way to stop it, what's worse is I'm just going all-in blind build assuming the rush is coming and I still can't stop it

It desperately needs attention because it's the only build Hausa players are running and it's ruining the enjoyment of the game

If it matters, I'm ELO 1400 french

If I count right, there''re 48 buildings in aoe iii, if you don't count USA and African buildings. What are the buildings left to get the achiviement? I have a little pesky building left to complete it.
