Here's a vote to return to old Arabia. Wall nerfs were fine, just don't do this.

Removing palisade in the next update if players still manage to wall on Arabia?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:34 AM PDT

Isn't Arabia supposed to be a balanced map, neither too open nor closed? A map that players with different playstyles can play? And I think it was in perfect shape before the recent changes.

I don't know why the devs keep making these changes to please only a certain type of players (aggressive, early rush), completely ignoring that a lot of players don't have good micro and walling is a major part of their game. Current Arabia is just a bigger Socotra.

I know a lot of high ELO players are happy with the changes, but they are only a fraction of the player base, the majority of players are below 1300. And Arabia was perfectly fine for them, neither too easy to wall off nor impossible. It just feels like the devs only care about the pro players, shaping the game to their liking. Disappointed.

It's just my opinion on the changes, nothing more. Peace.

    How is this possible?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 06:19 PM PDT

So this 1v1 ranked map is valley or something and I was against Persian. A few minutes after the start they built a TC right next to mine and then used their TC to attack my TC until it is too late for me to repair. How can they build a TC in dark age? Am I missing out on anything?

Holy forking frick balls the Dawk Of the Dukes campaigns are so flubbering good

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:55 PM PDT

I've played every single campaign in AOE2, AOE2 HD, and AOE2 DE, half of them more than twice and the new campaigns are the best I've ever seen. Granted I'm only on the 6th Polish campaign but I've loved every second of it, and to a point where I almost yelled "fuck yeah" when Vytausus said to murder the Tartars. Before this my favorite campaign was Bari but not fucking anymore. I really REALLY hope they keep adding campaigns. I do think they should stop adding new civs at some point and transition to adding campaigns only. I cannot get enough of them of them, especially when they are THIS GODDAMN GOOD.

My thoughts on the "Dawn of the Dukes" Campaigns

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:25 AM PDT

Holy fricking frickigy frack those campaigns were good. I just finished marathoning all 3 back to back and had a lot of fun. Do we know who made each? I was expecting 70% of the quality of Lords of the West's to be enough to be worth every penny but they went well above and beyond. They do seem to be designed to be played in their difficulty order, as they take place at around the same time and you can see how the actions in each campaign influence the next.

Obviously, spoilers ahead, as well as some thoughts I had on each campaign and some missions that sticked to me.

Algirdas and Kestutis (Lithuania) (One Sword): A 1 sword campaign to begin with, and the first time there's single player content for the Lithuanians. I think it was a very good showcase of what we know and love about the civ. Much like Ivaylo and Kotyan back on the last khans, I love seeing the Mongols as this titanic force of nature you can only delay. "A Worthy Opponent" and its game of Boyar Whack-a-Mole felt a bit much for a 1 sword campaign but idk that's just me. The plot twist of the final mission ocurring "in real time" sort of caught me by surprise, as all other campaigns have been purely flashbacks as far as I can remember. . "The Tatar Yoke" was also really cool in the amount of pressure it puts on you before you can stabilize, it was a real showcase on what playing vs the Mongols & Co is supposed to feel like in my head in a campaign scenario.

Jadwiga (Poland-Lithuania) (Two Swords): For someone with give-or-take negative knowledge of central-eastern european medieval history, seeing all characters cameo in the other campaigns surprised me and made me check the years. Who's ready for round two of "Mass knight-line while you also make your unique unit at the castle to help you deal with the fact that your main opponent in the campaign is characterized by their units being almost impervious to melee damage"?. All kidding aside this was, in my opinion, the highlight of the dlc, though all three were amazing both the story and missions grabbed my attention and didn't let go to the very end. Vytautas going from opponent to bff that follows you through the latter half of the campaign was nice to see, as was the emphasis on controlling your ai ally through taunts that we saw in Lords of the West. Vytautas firmly shatters the ai aoe2 adage by being an ally that was absolutely clutch. I'm fairly certain there's a way to do "The Fruits of Her Labor" 100%, it definitely felt very possible as my garbage macro managed to get very close with all tcs/mercs and 1 of the garrisons before the timer expired on my first try. I believe there's an oversight in the Siege of Vilnius, as while most of your defensive structures are either disabled or have their costs skyrocket your Bombard Towers are left at base cost and stats, so you can hide during the assasult waves behind a very large wall of Bombard Towers. As for the story, it felt the kind of romanticized aoe2 story that feels good, seeing everyone uniting for a unified country and giving the Teutons the finger felt the right amount of corny fun that these campaign storylines usually are, though I'll have to do some research myself later to see what really happened.

Jan Zizka (Bohemia) (Three Swords): Finally, taking a break from massing the unit the civ wants me to mass while supplementing with the UU to deal with teutonic knights to.... mass the units the civ wants me to make while supplementing with (more) Hand Canonneers to deal with teutonic knights. Seeing the finale of the last mission from a different perspective was quite fun, though I think Fruits of Her Labor is better than Courage and Coin. It is quite the excelent intro to Bohemia, as it shows you what the playstyle of "Gunpowder behind your Wagons with Pikes and Monks as trash in front" can do. It was definitely a very different playstyle from the other two and felt the right amount of "Too gold and micro intensive to be practical in 1v1" broken. (Shoutouts to "The Emperor's Fury" for showing me the gunpowder light). If I had to pick a mission that most stuck with me would be The Golden City, as you begin taking heat from all sides and with a nonexistant eco, but over time you can start clearing supply pathways and field back an army as each supply cart that gets through gives a very generous amount of resources, taking prague and cleaning your opponents off the map one by one, it really felt like a mission with a big map characterized by taking inches before turning it into a death push.

All in all, I had a ton of fun with all the campaigns, though of course everyone's experience may vary. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the campaigns and these have surpassed Bari and the Lords of the West ones in my opinion. Them all happening at the same time and being all related was also very interesting to see, I was grinning every time I had a previous faction as an ally in the next campaign.

    Sicilian Cavaliers

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 06:35 AM PDT

Sicilian Cavaliers are quite strong with this new technology Hauberk (+1/+2 armor).

Just some comparisons to a Frank FU Paladin.

Frank FU Paladin takes 64 hits from FU arbalests. 48 hits from FU cav archers. 6 hits from FU halb. 8 hits from FU heavy camel. Does 9.5 DPS itself.

Sicilian FU Cavalier takes 70 hits from FU arbalest. 47 hits from FU cav archers. 7 hits from FU halb. 10 hits from FU heavy camel. Does 8.9 DPS itself.

Overall this really seems to improve the archer matchups of Sicilians, in fact sicilian cavalry looks to be the best cavalry in the game against archers + pikes now. Bit puzzled by this change as they seem to beat up archer civs quite well now, they already had a very solid scout rush (spears dont counter sicilian scouts really) but that transitions very smoothly into knights which dominate archers if you just make it to Imperial.

Felt like Sicilians needing something more generic to help them, not an insane anti (cav)archer tech while getting nothing relevant for cavalry matchups. Bit of a strange buff is it not?

Poles & Bohemian units hidden bonuses (from game files)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:56 AM PDT

    Bohemians :

    1-Hussite wagons :

    • Damage bonus : +1 (+2 elite) vs building, +3 vs Rams
    • Reload time : 3.45
    • Accuracy : 85 (90 elite)
    • Movement speed : 0.85 (+15% after castle age UT)
    • Frame delay : 30
    • Armor classes : Siege weapons, UU, Gunpowder, 31, 37
    • Hussite wagons have a new special armor class 37 against which some units deal additional damage: Mangonels +40, Onagers +50, Siege onages +75, BBC +40, Houfnice +55 (unless Im forgetting a unit that should be it. No special bonus for Rams, Scorps, Ballista Elephants, Petards, Trebs or Organ guns). In practice, that means that siege onagers deal 75+75+12-1 = 161 total damage, effectively 2-shoting these 250 pv tanks (112 damage for regular onagers, so 2 shots required to kill non-elite hussite wagon, and 3 shots to kill elite one) - considering direct hits of course

2-Houfnice (in brackets values for regular BBC):

    • Damage bonus : 250 (200) vs buildings, 55 (40) vs ships, 20 (20) vs siege, 55 (40) vs stone defense, 55 (40) vs Hussite Wagons
    • Blast radius : 0.85 (0.5) (0.95 for BBC with Torsion Engines)
    • Reload time : 6.5 (6.5)
    • Movement speed : 0.7 (0.7) (+15% after castle age UT)
    • Frame delay : 7 (7)
    • Armor classes : Siege weapons, Gunpowder, 31 (Yes, no UU armor class)

    Poles :

    1-Obuch :

    • Effect : each hit removes +1/+1 (both armors) to the opponent unit, forever (or a very long time). Healing that unit to full by any method restores the armor
    • Damage bonus : +2 (+3 elite) vs Eagles, +4 (+6 elite) vs standard buildings
    • Reload time : 2
    • Movement speed : 0.9
    • Frame delay : 0
    • Armor classes : Infantry, UU, 31

2-Winged Hussar (in brackets values for scouts/light cav/regular hussars):

    • Damage bonus : +14 vs Monks (6/10/12), +4 vs gunpowder units (0/0/0)
    • Lechtic legacy (trample damage) : implemented in the exact same way as Druzhina, so +5 damage to adjacent units deals 33% of base damage. Fully upgraded WH therefore deals +4.33 trample damage
    • Reload time : 1.9 (2/2/1.9)
    • Movement speed : 1.5 (1.2/1.5/1.5)
    • Frame delay : 0
    • Armor classes : Cavalry, 31

Additional info : * Armor class 31 (unnamed) is used by the game to add "bonus damage" from leitis, to emulate ignore armor effect. Basically all units have it, and having it enables Leitis to do +13 (+16 elite) bonus damage to that unit.

Thoughts on new Arabia map gen? Pros and cons

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 04:13 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I've been playing a couple of ranked since the newest patch and Arabia is very different to before.

What's changed is that your wood lines are to the side and the back. You don't get a front wood line anymore. Also, hills can spawn in your base and kind of anywhere on the map.

Here's the pros and cons for me. I'll start with the pros: - m@a is way more effective, small walls are a little more difficult - trush is more effective - the openness rewards feudal aggression - the games are more open - random hill spawns leads to more varied castle placements - the map encourages you to expand into the map rather than laterally along the edges

Cons: - walling is much more onerous - FC is tough on 1v1 - the maps are a bit more linear. Once you've scouted your base, you know exactly where your opponent is - Resource spawn is frequently on hills and can be really far from your base e.g. you could have all your gold outside your base - the maps feel a little more predictable due to the linear nature of how the map is generated - team games on Arabia are weirdly boomy now!! Multiple times I saw stone walls yesterday

    What are others thoughts?

Discussion about renaming Slavs to Rus

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:36 PM PDT

Now that the Poles exist as a distinct civ, wouldn't it make sense to rename the Slavs to Rus? Slavs are divided into 3 broad families: east, west and south slavs [1]. East slavs correspond closely to the Rus. West slavs are mainly covered by Poles and Bohemians. South slavs are somewhat represented by the Bulgars. An analogy for the current situation would be if we had a civ called "Western Europe" in addition to the pre-existing wester european civilizations.

    Thoughts?

HUGE bug with gates I found playing the Joan of Arc compaign. Units deal damage when passing through, destroying my gate without a single enemy attacking it.
